*Counterpublics*

In this entry, I will examine the critical question: Find an artifact of a counterpublic: Why/how is it a counterpublic? What is its rhetorical message? How is it empowering and/or limiting?

To investigate these questions, I examined a poem written by Ernestine Morrison named ‘The Average Black Girl’ as my rhetorical artifact. The poem shares a narrative with its audience that it is not okay to apply negative stereotypes to any group of people, and more specifically in this poem black women. This was a very productive narrative in terms of laying out the current stereotypes that are given and showing the audience why these are hurtful to not just the culture of black women but to everyone who hears the stereotypes. It is very empowering because the poem is a very personal story and creates a narrative that puts your in her situation, creating a call for action.

‘The Average Black Girl’ is a poem written in order to send a message to the world. Ernestine Morrison became fed up with everyone always telling her that she was not the average black women solely based off of false stereotypes. She spoke very properly and had good posture and wasn’t loud and because of these feats, among others, she was labeled as ‘not the average black girl’. This would really put her on edge because she was being complemented simply because she did not fit a false stereotype. Her goal within this poem is to create awareness around the harmfulness and falsity behind these stereotypes in hopes that people will see how wrong this really is. She has performed this poem on many different occasions and you can really see how much this issue means to her by the way she delivers her poem.

Catherine Squires (2001) explains that counterpublics are created in response to exclusive behaviors from dominant public spheres, politics, and the state. She notes that counterpublics are often times talked about very vaguely and without much context other that the bland fact that they are in opposition of some exclusive behavior. She wanted people to look deeper into why certain counterpublics are formed and what their ultimate goals are, instead of just looking at who they are trying to counter. She believed that there was so much more that went into a counterpublic than what met the outsiders eye and wanted to stress the importance on getting educated as to what the counterpublic really stood for.

The counterpublic that Ernestine Morrison is creating within her performances, is a group of people who will stand up for racial stereotypes and spread the message about how detrimental these stereotypes can be to an entire culture. She wants to create a counterpublic that does not just fight for black women, although that may be the focus in her poem, but for all groups that are wrongfully characterized. Some examples of the stereotypes that she wants to overcome were very evident in her poem when she states, “they say I’m not the average black girl because I’m so well-spoken, poised, full of etiquette, a white man’s token...I talk so white. Well when did me talking right, equate to me talking white.” (Morrison). This is just a very small portion of her almost four minute long poem, she continues to list stereotype after stereotype that is given to this culture and the ways in which it changes their mindsets and belief systems solely because outsiders have assigned them certain traits. To relate this back to the course reading I would like to pull a quote from Catherine Squires when she wrote, “The black public sphere mainly exhibited the characteristics of the oscillating genre, where members of a marginalized public systematically project their previously enclaved ideas toward the state and wider public's.” (Squires). The reason that I chose this quote is because it shares the idea that a number of cultures give themselves certain characteristics solely based off of what people not involved in that culture assign to them. The next quote I am going to pull from the Squires reading is a bit longer but it covers the exact issue that Morrison is addressing and provides rationale for how change can be made and what has been successful in the past. The quote is a follows, “The surveillance and study of the Black press created more oscillation of ideas between the Black and white public, exposing more white Americans to Black thought...it did spark debates and thinking that would not have occurred if Blacks had backed down from their position. The sympathetic words of certain white editors and writers identified new allies and signaled a greater willingness of whites to consider questions of Black equality.” (Squires). I felt that this quote was really powerful because it shows a successful example of what Morrison is currently trying to do with her performances. She is trying to spread her message to all cultures in order to raise awareness and get other people on board to help spread her message.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to this narrative, but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. One advantage is that Ernestine Morrison performs her poem to audiences that consist of many different cultures and ethnicity’s. This allows her to gain a much stronger and more diverse following to help spread her message. She is speaking to people who have been through similar situations so her cause becomes much more relateable. Another advantage to this performance is she gives a very personal story to her audience. Her poem is very heartfelt and every single aspect of it is directly related to her life as well as the lives of other black women who are affected by these stereotypes. She is able to speak with so much emotion ranging from pain to anger to sadness. This just increases the meaningfulness of the performance and really advances the idea that the is an issue that has an extremely negative impact on a lot of people and something needs to be done about it. At the same time, however there is one small disadvantage to the way that Ernestine Morrison decided to write this poem and that is the exclusivity of it. Due to the fact that she only includes on select group, black women, it limits the amount of others that may support her cause. There are a ton of other cultural groups that also face very similar situations so they may not be completely on board simply because they feel as though they are helping a group but really getting themselves nowhere in the process. With that being said, I do not feel that this is a major issue because people will be able to see through this and realize that it really is a fight for all cultures who face these prejudices and it needs to become a large effort by people of all cultures.

Dawson (1994) further explains how narratives work by making the connection behind the Black counterpublic. Dawson talks about different scenarios that have occurred in that past that have led to the black counterpublic becoming what it is. He talks about things such as black politics, racial agendas and economic earthquakes. This article also applied Habermas’s idea of the public sphere and used it to strengthen his idea behind the black counterpublic. He also made it a point to state that the black counterpublic is not a bourgeois sphere like Habermas described it as. Instead, he believed that the counterpublic was a multi-class system and, at least until 1970, was largely led by males. When this idea is applied to Morrison’s speech, it shows the changes that have been made in the last 40-50 years. Now the black counterpublic has very powerful female voices behind it just as much as males. People just like Ernestine Morrison are leading voices to this counterpublic and draw up a lot of talk about the changes that need to be made. It is encouraging to see that the has at least been some amount of progress made in terms of who can speak and gain traction for the culture.

In Summary I believe that the performance given by Ernestine Morrison was extremely powerful. She was able to put together a poem that showed so much emotion and courage that she was able to start a  movement. On YouTube alone she has had her poem view over six million times. That is six million people that have seen just one of her many videos on top of all the people that she has already performed her poem for. She has single handly created a significant amount of talk surrounding the negativity behind the stereotypes that are being given to black women. All in all, she created a very empowering message within her performances that details a counterpublic and what its mission should be. She provided a very personal narrative that was heartfelt and was very relatable to many people. I am very glad that I found this video and was able to analyze its significance.
