Power Rangers Hybrid Responders

A group of scientist spent years developing a series of Artificial Intelligence, basing their visual appearance and attributes after various animals. The plan was to implant them into first responder suits to revolutionize emergency response and save countless lives. The scientists treated the AI as equals even allowing their own children to interact with them during development. However BuzZero (AI #0 based on a beetle) grew tired of being used by humanity as a tool and rebels. Now calling itself Vinsect it escapes the lab. Fortunately the scientists manage to upload an anti-virus to the net preventing Vinsect from infecting the world. However Vinsect still manages to take control over a series of manufacturing plants and builds an army of robots powered by toxic pollution. Vinsect declares that nothing will stop them or their Swarm from taking over the world. The Renegade AI grows stronger by the day and one day will be able to bypass the protection and infect the world. The scientists ask the remaining AI to help fight their fellow AI but without physical bodies they are unable to do much. With no other choice the scientists ask their now teenage children to fight alongside the AI against Vinsect. The world’s only hope are the Power Rangers Hybrid Responders Red Hybrid Ranger-Evan- 18 - FalcOne (falcon #1)- One of the first children to meet the AI he bonded almost immediately with FalcOne. A natural born leader part of him hopes that it’s possible to bring BuzZero back but as Vinsect’s actions grow more severe he begins to lose faith in that plan-Armed with the Speed Sword

Blue Hybrid Ranger- Aaron- 17- DuLion (lion #2)- While he understands the importance of their task he can’t help but ask why the fate of the world is in the hands of a group of teenagers instead of the military- Armed with the Highway Bazooka Yellow Hybrid Ranger- Rose- 17- TriBear (bear #3)- At first she continuously complains about how being a Ranger hinders her social life, even if she admits it can be fun. In time she accepts the scale of their mission and puts her all into it - Armed with the Zoom Scout Hybrid Zords- Small hand held vehicles built using experimental technology. When the AI chips are placed within them they grow to zord size. Controlled mainly by the AI due to the fact many of the Rangers don’t have licenses yet Hybrid Megazord Falcon Speeder forms the torso, arms and head Lion Bus forms the legs Bear Rover forms the lower torso Green Hybrid Ranger- Milo- 15- Fourca (orca #4)- Little brother of Katie. As the youngest Ranger he seeks the approval of the others leading him to sometimes take unnecessary risks- Armed with the Street Axe Black Hybrid Ranger- Dan- 16- K-5 (dog #5)- A gamer he bonded with K-5 over video games and even play FPS games together. The scientists were impressed that this actually helped improve K-5′s aim- Armed with the Nitro Blaster Orange Hybrid Ranger- Addie- 18- Sixter (alligator #6)- Wheelchair bound since an accident in her youth, she is able to walk thanks to an experimental implant. Though she worries it may make her vulnerable to Vinsect the other Rangers say they won’t allow that- Armed with the Stop Shield Engine Hybrid Megazord Orca Cycle forms the left arm Hound Chaser forms the right arm Gator Trailer forms the torso legs and head Super Hybrid Megazord forms from the Hybrid and the Engine Hybrid Megazords combining Gold Hybrid Ranger- Mike- 17- Rooseven (rooster #7)- An artist and poet he uses his experiences as a Ranger as inspiration. Dating Lian- Armed with the Turbine Blaster Blade in Fire Mode Silver Hybrid Ranger- Lian- 17- Eiger (tiger #8)- An athlete and fitness enthusiast she enjoys pushing her body to the edge. Dating Mike- Armed with the Turbine Blaster Blade in Ice Mode Navy Hybrid Ranger- Katie- 19- Whaline (whale #9)- Older sister of Milo. A child prodigy she actually helped with some of the coding for the AI leading her to worry in hindsight that she may be to blame for Vinsect’s rebellion- Armed with the Turbine Blaster Blade in Thunder Mode Aero Hybrid Megazord Rooster Copter forms the right arm Tiger Jet forms the left arm Whale Plane forms the torso legs and head Supreme Hybrid Megazord forms from the three Megazords combining Fossil Train- A trio of prototype AI. When he left the lab Vinsect stole their coding and later created a massive train to house their programming to use against the Rangers. Fortunately an upgrade patch gives them the same sentience as the other AI allowing them to join the Rangers as Evan’s secondary Megazord. Mastendon (mastodon #10) Rexen (t-rex #11) Tricerazon (triceratops #12) Rail Hybrid Megazord Mastodon Engine forms the torso head and arms Rex Car forms the right leg Triceratops Car forms the left leg Hybrid Ultrazord forms from all four Megazords joining as one Morphers- All the morphers can be used to project holograms of the AI as well as communicate with the lab. Wednesday 27 Dec. 2017 The days are becoming longer, again. Hooray. I really dislike the very short days of winter. Grey, cool and damp with light raindrops and snow flurries. I got a lot of painting done, taking it light on exercises... my hips are hurting so I'm taking a sit up break and doing toe touching.

The end of another year. Time to reflect and make plans for the coming year. I've been doing the nude selfies for 3 years, now. It was meant to be a one year project but I've been exercising more since I began pain management and hormone replacement. I was feeling pretty crappy back in 2012 but, finally, found some good doctors and a good family doctor who had a hunch what my problem was and, now, I'm in hormone replacement therapy.

I hurt a lot but have learned to live with my aches. They are under control about 2/3 of the time and the rest I've had to adjust to as part of my life. Being old sucks.

So... still not sure what the coming year will be. I am a year behind on my painting projects. They were supposed to have been completed a year ago. Oh well. The good part is I've gotten a lot better at the painting thing and have developed a style quite my own. Woohoo... or something.

As for the naked selfies? Who knew so many people would want to see a naked old man? Well, I have no shame and, if you wish to see my balls, it's OK with me. I am, however, getting close to finishing the landscape painting project... over 25 landscapes in acrylic paint. I have a large number of oil painting not completed and a large acrylic male nude to complete. I want to put my energy into my paintings and making more podcast style videos. I'm trying, as best I can, to stay in shape so I'll continue to record my naked body but will, likely, not attempt to make it a daily thing. I'm already OCD and changing my habits is hard once I get into something. It takes time to upload photos and videos, so I plan to keep doing it but, more likely, every several days, or weekly. Weekly would be best, I think. I'll work it out over the next few days. I want to do more video stuff... it's time consuming.

Anyhow, it's the end of 2017. Can't believe I'm still alive.

FREE SPEECH is becoming an endangered subject. It's becoming like a Henry Ford Model T. You can have any colour you want so long as it's black.

Universities, those cash gouging institutions of poor learning try, not only, to crank more and more idiots through a course of meaningless shit for a meaningless degree taught by teachers who know little, they have become forces against progress and learning. If you don't have a PhD, your degree didn't teach you very much and you likely forgot most of what you learned.

If you have a Bachelor's degree, and nothing more, you blew your cash to bribe your way into a job you are likely not qualified for, anyway. I have zero respect for a Bachelor of Arts degree... none. You're not qualified for anything, at all. You, likely, would fail a good grammar exam because your command of English is so poor. I expect you know nothing much about anything. You, likely, have poor math skills and know nothing of history, at all. NADA. Our educational system is in need of a complete overhaul.

There is no reason, at all, why every grade of school should not be online, 24 hours a day... every course, every subject, available to everyone, 24 hours a day... at home. It would be constantly updated and improved with new knowledge. Teachers who don't know much of their subject would become obsolete, rather quickly. The only requirement to get a degree would be to pass a set of exams set by government. Prove your identity, do the exams, and you're in. Anyone, anywhere, could have an education in every grade and subject. Schools, as we know them would become obsolete.

Now, if anyone has an opinion outside of the common thought, one is a heretic likely to lose one's job and position. Universities bar speakers with opinions not shared by the common idiots. We live in a world with no child left behind, everyone is as qualified as everyone else and everyone is a hero. I so hate this world I, quite truly, look forward to being dead. Seriously... I hate this planet and wish I had never been born into it. I'm trying, my best, to save your idiot asses from a horrific future that is coming to this sick, sick, sick, sick planet.

I don't have the answers as to how to save the planet. I expect nature to take its course and the bulk of the planet to die off, very soon. We have terrible leaders and a hopeless population. A benevolent dictatorship is the only way to rule this barbaric rock of a planet.

The problem is finding leaders who are qualified to rule. The Chinese seem to be evolving into the future power on the planet. I expect the Chinese will take over the planet. They are totally ruthless and have no morals of any kind.

I said it, I mean it. Oh? You don't like my opinion? Well, fuck you asshole. I've tried 'nice'. Nice does not work. Have you ever noticed how con artists are all buddy buddy when they meet you? All smiles and acting like your long lost friend? It all goes well until you don't play along then it's "fuck you". I try to be nice to everyone and am not likely to make friends with anyone. I don't trust humans one little bit. You will have to prove yourself to me and I don't wait up.

I gather it’s some kind of need I have to be, constantly, in complete control of everything. I quite simply assume everyone around me is a complete idiot. Physics… The Speed of Light, Grand Unified Theory, Gravity, Dark Matter, Dark Energy… how the physical size of the Electron is the clock that sets the speed of light. Gravity is motion and a product of the fact that nothing ever sits still, combined with the magnetic properties of Dark Matter/Energy. Nothing can ever move in an absolute circle and rest is a relativity illusion.

The ENTIRE universe is based upon a simple fact... it must have TWO parts. It can not be otherwise and is impossible to be otherwise. This is because of what a physicist calls "spin".

If you had only one substance to make the universe with and it could be broken down to as small as it needed to be at any time... i.e. it could be so small it barely exists, at all, there will STILL be TWO different types... that is because one can choose to spin LEFT or RIGHT in space. Even turning yourself upside down will not change that fact because there is no up, nor down, in space.

The fact that everything SOLID must have spin, either left or right, introduces opposite forces. Things which spin the SAME way repel each other, those that spin the OPPOSITE way attract each other... clumping begins and so does a universe. Another thing comes into being... what we term magnetism. There MUST be opposite POLES... magnetism comes into being with spin. Spin creates opposites, including North/South polarity. In Atoms, any atom that isn't in balance... has an equal number of left and right spinning Electrons, will be affected by magnetism... and radio waves.

Absolute rest is not possible… ever. For instance, the Sun and planets are moving around the Milky Way at about 230Km/S and the Milky way is moving through space about 400-600 Kilometres per second. Nothing ever goes backwards, nothing ever travels in a circle.

The universe can not end. Time is change and is an illusion. Time is entirely relative to how large/small something is. If you are an Electron of less than 1/1,000,000,000,000,000th of a metre, in size, one second is a VERY, VERY, VERY, long time. One foot is a VERY, VERY, VERY long distance to an Electron. Light travel just less than ONE FOOT in a billionth of a second. Time awareness is entirely dependent on how large something is. The Milky Way requires over 150 million light years to exist... it is HERE and THERE, at the same time... a single entity that requires over 150 million light years to cross... or how an Electron views a distance of several feet.

It is always now, everywhere, all at once, all of the time. Proof of that is that ANY object MUST be HERE and THERE at the SAME time, no matter how large… even a Galaxy. It is always NOW on both sides… here and there, in space, of the Galaxy… all galaxies, everywhere. Waves can be either physical or electronic. The duality of the universe keeps it ongoing. DNA is the battery of life. When the chains can no longer co-operate, life ceases in the body. Life, itself, is a duality. Time measurement is a relativity convenience.) Time travel is impossible because time is not a place and nothing stays where it was. One year from now the Solar System will have moved about seven BILLION kilometres through space and will NEVER return to where it was… ever.

Earth travels through space like a long wave… it has NEVER, ever made an actual circle, nor ellipse, in space. The circle/ellipse is an illusion of relativity. Nothing can ever travel in an actual circle in space… NOTHING. Nothing can ever go backward. Backwards motion is an illusion of relativity. Time is a repercussion of change and has no fixed rate… things explode or move like a glacier. At best we can only compare rates of change. Our rate of change is called the second/minute/hour/day/month/year system.

NOTHING CAN EVER MOVE IN A TRUE CIRCLE. THE EARTH HAS NEVER MADE A LOOP IN SPACE… EVER. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW.

Earth moves about 7 billion kilometers through space, each year… in a long wave. Earth NEVER returns to where it was before. Earth is NOT an island in space… one of the reasons why time travel is impossible. I’m here to teach you things. While I appreciate other people’s opinions, I really don’t much give a crap what anyone thinks. Until you prove your worth, I will be nice but you have to earn my respect. The moment you say a word, I’ll be figuring you out really, really fast. You should assume that I don’t trust anyone. I’ve not met a single trustworthy person in my entire life. I’ve met lots of nice people who aren’t too bright… well-intentioned folk who know little about anything, people who are nice, most of the time until you say something that offends them. Honourable people agree to disagree.

Look up the phrase “CRITICAL THINKING” then learn to practice it. Most people leap before they look and judge before they listen to the facts. Most don’t have enough knowledge, nor experience, to be experts in much of anything. You don’t know what you don’t know. I like to remind you of that, often.

The only other REALLY IMPORTANT thing to know about me is that I, totally, despise all religions, the teaching of religion, and religious institutions… I despise them as the evilest things on the planet. If you follow a religion, you CAN NOT BE MY FRIEND. THAT’S THAT. You are an ignorant idiot who is an ever-present danger to yourself and everyone and everything around you. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING, is eviler than religion. I don’t stand for, nor sing, our National Anthem because it praises a fictitious and superstitious being called ‘God’. Only a brain dead moron bonehead ignorant idiot would believe such a thing.

If you have a religion, I will not associate with you… period. You are a danger to be around. Yes, I insult religions… they are extraordinarily evil. I said it, I mean it. You have a right to be an idiot, but not around me. I have a right to defend myself against the horrors of religion and I will. Religion is evil. People who are into religion are, either, brainwashed or extraordinarily ignorant, not very intelligent, a danger to themselves and everyone around them, and must be avoided. I can’t say it enough times. If you have a religion you are brainwashed or too fucking stupid to associate with. Brainwashed, or stupid… either way you are too dangerous to be around. Religion is the number one problem in the world.

Track by Track on ‘Colorado’ by Neil Young

1. Think Of Me

This one sounds a bit like ‘Buffalo Springfield Again’ from Silver and Gold. Sometimes I think that Neil isn’t a composer like Paul McCartney, or a lyricist like Dylan. He’s someone who just picks up a guitar and strums the same chords he’s been strumming since he first started playing as a teen and just sings what’s on his mind. I doubt very much he sat down and wrote these lyrics with a pen or a computer. He’s just gets on a roll and songs whatever bullshit comes into his head. And he’s an obscenely rich man who is allowed to indulge in all his obsessions, so it can be a bit of a one-track ride as a fan. But I do like this as an opening song. It’s very familiar.

2. She Showed Me Love

One of the things he’s obsessed with on this album is the environment and climate change. He’s goes on at length about, “Old white guys trying to kill Mother Nature.” It’s probably true that most climate change deniers are men of his vintage who can’t handle the fact that they’ve done this amount of damage to the world. I just wish he’d come up with a more palatable way of saying it. Because these lyrics are not going to turn anybody’s head. He sounds like a cranky old man banging on about the same thing he’s been banging on about for years now.

As an aside, the reason I’m listening to this is that I have a habit of not listening properly to the old guys. Even the old guys I like. When they’re playing a gig in Ireland or they have a new album out, I just assume that it’s not worth checking because they’re past it and they have nothing left in the tank. I actively avoided going to see Leonard Cohen during that great second wave of his career. (In my defense, I really don’t like that plinkety-plonk synth sound that he had on those albums, and the super layered midi instruments. And all the songs about naked women. I know he’s supposed to be a poet and all, but there are a few songs where there isn’t that much tonally between Leonard Cohen and Roy Chubby Brown. I’d love to see Leonard Cohen out there in the shorts and the goggles, doing Chubby Brown’s act. “You know they life is like oral sex - one slip of the tongue and you’re in the shit.” Could have been a lyric on Death Of A Ladies Man.)

Anyway, ‘She Showed Me Love’ is an old-style Crazy horse stomper, but just not a very good one. “Mother Nature pushing Earth in a baby carriage,” sounds like something bluted out in the moment as a placeholder, not a composed lyric. They’re going for the old days here, but it just goes on and on like a hippy ZZ Top. Nils Lofgren must be a real glutton for punishment, throwing his lot in with Neil AND Springsteen. That’s a lot of intensity to have in your life. While Bruce is out in Jersey blathering on about being a cowboy or whatever he’s into now, Neil is up a mountain in Colorado writing nursery rhymes about the environment. I’d personally rather hang with Neil, but that’s not an easy choice.

3. Olden Days

I love this one. It’s more musically rich than the first two songs. It does sound like he’s hit on a few interesting melodic and chordal things in the midst of a jam and written a song around them. However, I don’t know why he insists on writing songs in the key of D. His voice can’t handle it anymore, and he sounds really thin on these high notes. It’s the kind of thing I enjoy listening to it alone, but would make excuses for if I had the album playing in company. I don’t mind Neil struggling for these notes. Doesn’t bother me at all.

People have compared this album to some of the old Crazy Horse classics, but I think it’s got more in common with Silver and Gold than it does with Tonight’s The Night. I really like these grunge ballads that he does.

4. Help Me Lose My Mind

This is the song on the trailer for the documentary where he’s screaming at that poor old man that works for him - John Hanlon. He’s screaming like a child at him through the control-room glass about how his monitor isn’t working. First of all, what kind of a lunatic is using a monitor in the studio? How fucking loud are they playing?! How can the guy who’s talking about the environment and climate change be using so many extra resources that he doesn’t need in the studio? I do think if Neil Young was ever faced with what would actually be required in cutting our resources down to a manageable level, he actually wouldn’t be able to live his life.

- Maybe just have one guitar, Neil? - What do you mean? - Well, you can only play one guitar at a time anyway. Maybe have one spare. And instead of using these big tape machines that run on tubes and such, why don’t just get a DI for the laptop and we could record the whole album that way? - Okay. I’ll have one more look at the guitars I have out in the barn and pick two? - That’s another thing. I know you like having that big barn for your trains and amps and everything, but you could literally house ten families in that barn. Logistically, its hard to justify having all that space for amps and model trains. - But where will I play with my model trains? - Who knows? Set them up in your bedroom. Daryl won’t mind - she’s open-minded. The track can go round your bed, while you sit propped up by pillows with your conductor’s hat on - you’ll have a grand old time!

5. Green Is Blue

This one really works. Sounds like it could have been on Freedom and been better than most of the ballads stuff on that album. It’s another environmental song, but I think it works much better than the others. It’s less slogan-y and more subtle. The kind of song he can probably knock out in his sleep when he’s not focused enough to try and make every lyric scan like a protest placard. And a polar bear floating on a piece of ice from another time is total Rust-era time travel. The least cheesy environmental song on here.

6. Shut It Down

“We got to shut the whole system down…” It’s not like he’s not right, but why does he have to say it in one of his worst songs? Jeebus, this is a drag. It reminds of what what Living With War might have sounded like if I had ever listened to it. “What about the animals/ What about the birds and bees?” I agree with you, you mad man! But gadzooks Neil, couldn’t you get Kendrick or someone to sing some of this stuff so that maybe a few people outside the circle of old hippies and hipsters that go to your gigs might hear it? Anyone who has ever bough a Neil Young album surely has surely gotten the message at this stage. The same way that Bob Dylan’s fans are now well-versed on the fact that he wishes it was the 40’s, Neil Young’s fans have a fairly good idea of where stands on the environment. He likes it.

7. Milky Way

This song is the business. Sounds like a mix between ‘Cowgirl in the Sand’ and ‘Danger Bird’ and loopier than either of them. “I was sailing in the Milky Way/Losing track of memories that weren’t that day.” The lyrics on this one are amazing and the band sound great. I think the older musicians can get these performances out of him. He’s trying too hard with The Promise of the Real to play up to being the cranky old fuck. This is an old-fashioned trip to space with Uncle Neil. “Libraries and museums, galaxies and stars…” The guitar playing sounds like he’s playing without a pick, which is something that always sounds great when he busts it out. Like Mark Knopfler’s stoner uncle.

8. Eternity

This is another tune where his voice cracks a bit, but it’s such a great song that it doesn’t matter. Apparently that’s Nils Lofgren is tap-dancing on the rhythm. You don’t get that shit with Bruce! That tap-dancing is the sound of a man dancing with glee at the thought of working with a proper artist. I can even take the ‘clickety-clack’ backing vocals. No-one else on the fucking planet with attempt something so ridiculous with a song like this, and do it with a straight face.

9. Rainbow of Colours

Why am I embarrassed by this song like it’s my dad singing it? And why do positive messages in songs always automatically sound cheesy? He’s sang every possible song he can about what’s going on inside his head, but when he tackles something real like racism, it just makes me cringe. But why? It’s a heartfelt, lovely sentiment that the world needs to hear. Why is it cheesy? Shouldn’t we get past that and just let this be a nice song about how we all actually feel? Maybe if we were all a bit more comfortable with mawkishness then the world could actually be a better place.

10. I Do

Back to D, and straining for every high note in sight. It’s a great song, though. I like that you can sort of hear chatter at the start. Kinda contradicts the aul’ coot screaming at the other aul’ coot on the documentary trailer. On headphones you can hear the snare drum rattling with the sound of the bass. Obviously some live playing happening here. There are some moments of some incredible art on this album, which is always what Neil Young had over his contemporaries - even Dylan and Cohen. He was always willing to look a bit mad and untrustworthy if he thought an idea was worth it.

But holy fuck, this is gorgeous. It’s recycling the chords from ‘Olden Days’ a little bit, but it makes it kind of like a theme. I think the subtler moments on this album are way more effective than the chest-beaters. He’s following weird trains of thought and making them sound beautiful.

The Secret of Success So as so many students can not afford to even drive a car during the study, Elijah Oyefeso went exactly the opposite - discard studies, get wealth. He was studying the International Business Management at Buckingham Football when he decided it was not for him, but what is the secret of his success?

"If you do not take any risk, you will not be successful. There is no limit why you can not buy an island? You have a life so you have to live it," said Elijah Oyefeso, keeping things a bit unclear side.

"The course was good, but it's not my passion. I do not want to work under anyone,"

So, What’s Going On?

ACT I

A young pilot introduces himself to the audience. He explains how grown-ups never really understood him and that now, as an adult, he earns a living soaring through the sky. The stars sing to him as he glides through the air, but, despite the pleasant atmosphere, he suddenly loses control of his plane and crashes into the Sahara Desert.

The pilot looks over the damage and begins to try and fix the plane. But just as he grabs his tools, he’s interrupted by a small boy who curiously asks the pilot to draw a sheep. Though confused at first, the pilot comes to know the boy as “the Little Prince,” and, slowly, the prince reveals his unusual story.

The pilot tries to impress the prince with his drawing skills.

The pilot describes the Little Prince’s little planet (and its three mini volcanoes) in a film version of the opera from 2004.

We learn the prince was once the proud owner of a tiny asteroid, where he cared for a lovely rose whom he adored but who was also very difficult to please. She challenged him to leave his home and gain more wisdom in order to be able to take care of her better, and so… he set out to visit some neighboring planets. During his travels he met several strange adults, including a king, a vain man, a drunkard, a businessman, and a lamplighter. After meeting these men, the Little Prince—not quite satisfied with what he’d discovered so far—decided to journey to planet Earth.

The prince admires his beautiful yet fickle and demanding rose.

ACT II

The prince continues his story while the pilot listens. On Earth, the prince says, he met a slithering snake who claimed that his deadly poison could “ease” all the prince’s worries. The Little Prince then encountered a garden full of roses and cried at the thought that his own rose might merely be one out of a million other common flowers.

A scheming snake promises to cure the Little Prince’s homesickness.

The prince resumes his tale. Soon after meeting the roses, he adds, he was comforted by a friendly fox. The fox, who begged the prince to tame her and make her his own, gently explained that everything worthwhile is invisible and that such things cannot be touched, but can only be felt with the heart. She also told him that the bonds of love are what make all things—including ordinary flowers— uniquely special.

Take a listen… The fox asks the Little Prince to “tame” her by becoming her friend.

The pilot then cuts off the prince’s story, saying that the two of them will need water if they are to continue to survive in the desert. Exhausted, they travel to a spot directly beneath the prince’s planet (which sits high in the night sky) and discover a well. As they collect cool water from the crystal-clear well, the pilot realizes his friendly affection for the prince and begins to understand the fox’s message.

Still, the prince longs to return to his rose as he has promised. Will the tired and weary Little Prince make it home? Will the pilot be able to keep the prince’s lessons in his heart if the Little Prince disappears?

The pilot carries the fragile Little Prince across the Sahara in search of a well.

Good to Know

Novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (ahn-TWAN duh san-teg-zu-pey-REE)’s The Little Prince (or Le Petit Prince, in the original French) may have gone down in literary history as a timeless fairytale about life, love, loss, and the power of memory, but it was actually inspired by true events. Sort of. Saint-Exupéry, an accomplished artist and author, was—much like the narrator of his Little Prince story—a trained pilot. Yet despite his skills in the air and his years of experience working as a flying mail carrier and a reconnaissance pilot for the French government during World War II, Saint-Exupéry sadly suffered several plane crashes throughout his career.

One particular crash in 1935 landed him in the Sahara, where he and his co-pilot were left alone (with limited supplies) for several days. Saint-Exupéry witnessed several mirages while out beneath the desert sun and reportedly met with several imaginary creatures he had hallucinated. Years later, while in New York seeking sanctuary from war-torn Europe, Saint-Exupéry refashioned his own desert adventures into a fantastic tale about a lonely pilot whose life is given new meaning when he meets a remarkable little boy from outer space.

Loved by children and grown-ups alike for its simple language, vivid illustrations (also created by Saint-Exupéry) and enduring message of finding joy even in the saddest of times, The Little Prince has provided material for several films and stage works since its original publication in 1943. And when acclaimed film composer Rachel Portman decided to take a break from her successful movie career to create an opera suitable for children, she turned to Saint-Exupéry’s famous tale for inspiration, eventually realizing it was the perfect story for a kid-friendly operatic endeavor.

The fox tells the prince an invaluable secret.

Check This Out…

Children’s choruses, though they make appearances in some of opera’s best-loved works, aren’t used by operatic composers all that often. Why do you think Rachel Portman added a children’s chorus to The Little Prince? What function does the chorus play, if any? Can you come up with other instances in film, TV, literature, or theater where a chorus or group of people is employed in a similar way?

In Saint-Exupéry’s book, the prince has a special admiration for the lamplighter. In the opera, the prince joins this character in song, which is something he rarely does with the other “adults” in the story. Why do you think the lamplighter is given added significance by both Saint-Exupéry and Portman? Why do you feel the composer chose to have these two sing together?

The flute often plays alongside the prince’s voice. Why do you think the composer chose this instrument to accompany the Little Prince so frequently? Does the flute make you think of any particular aspects of the prince’s character?

The prince meets a king who loves to rule but never asks his subjects for anything unreasonable.

Think About This…

What to watch and listen for…

How the musical melodies rise and fall along with the characters’ feelings. (Example: The voice of the well water keeps getting higher and higher as the prince and the pilot enjoy a happy moment.) Does this technique help you sympathize with the characters and their experiences? Can you name other songs you’ve heard that use this same effect?

The overly-powerful and relentless music for the baobab (pronounced BEY-oh-bab) trees. Listen for the low-sounding instruments and the forceful drums that represent these destructive plants. What do the sounds remind you of? Do you think the greedy baobabs represented a specific concept, ideology, or group to Saint-Exupéry, who witnessed World Wars I and II?

How the prince and the pilot occasionally sing in short, choppy bursts with very few instruments, but also sing longer phrases that rise above the entire orchestra. Why do you think the composer uses these different styles? Do the styles remind you of anything? (Hint: Think about what it sounds like when you have a normal conversation vs. when you talk about something that excites you or gives you joy.)

Take Action: An Invisible Top Ten

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons of The Little Prince is the fox’s mantra: “Anything essential is invisible to the eye.” Both the opera and Saint-Exupéry’s original story invite audiences to take the time to celebrate feelings rather than physical objects and to examine the tiny details that make our favorite people and most memorable experiences so important.

We challenge you to do the same.

Without naming any items that can be seen or touched, make a list of 10 things that inspire you, move you, make you happy, or give you a sense of purpose. Nothing is off limits (these can be moods or events you encounter every day or once-in-a-lifetime occurrences and emotions), but try to come up with thoughts and feelings rather than material gifts or techie gadgets. Your preferred model of smartphone? Leave that off the list. That sense of excitement you get when you’re visiting somewhere new on vacation? That’s more like it.

When you’re finished, share your list with family, friends, and fellow students. Ask them to make their own top ten as well. See if you can collect a bunch of top ten lists from people with a variety of different ages, backgrounds, and life stories. Gather your favorite entries and ask permission to post them on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Instagram with the hashtag #invisibleessentials.
