Collective Review: Tobermory 28 (1994) Royal Mile Whiskies
Review by: Maltrunners Raygun’s Introduction: This Tobermory came from Royal Mile Whiskies, a well-known shop in Edinburgh located appropriately enough on the Royal Mile. They’ve done occasional bottles under their own label for a while now, but seem to have stepped up the number of those starting in 2023. This full review features a summary of what we found, a group score, and our individual…

Scotland Fix of the Day: I’m excited to say that in a couple of weeks I’ll be back in Scotland gazing at Eilean Donan castle after sailing down the Caledonian canal and out into the Inner Hebrides. I'll be aboard the Lord of the Glens with National Geographic Expeditions, a trip I've done before. Two hundred years ago industrious Scots were digging this historic canal, building it large enough to carry a 32 gun frigate, at the time of the Napoleonic wars. It’s considerably more peaceful now, wildflowers were growing along the canal trail on this morning as we hiked along the canal trail, catching up with the boat at the next loch. The canal starts in Inverness and ends near Ft. William. In between it connects Loch Ness (montser there), Loch Oich (might have a monster) and Loch Lochy, past castles, villages and pubs, through stunning scenery and the kind of history any Outlander fan might relish. The Lord of the Glens always draws a crowd as we ascend the locks in Fort Augustus. Back in the day when the locks were operated by capstans it took half a day to get through but now it’s usually about 90 minutes. After a stop on the Isle of Eigg (or maybe Rum) in the Small Isles we'll be on to Iona, always a pretty sight with boats coming and going. Granite boulders forming the Street of the Dead (Sraid nam Marbh) leading off to Iona Abbey have lain here on Iona for more than 1,000 years. Along this processional way the bodies of Scottish Kings (MacBeth included) and royalty were carried to their graves in Reilig Odhráin from Martyr’s Bay, where Viking raiders killed 68 monks in 806 AD. In the evening we dock in the harbor at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, looking out at what has to be one of the prettiest waterfronts of any Scottish island village. It’s famed for the signature red, yellow, and blue buildings that the children’s television show “Balamory” made famous. It's a terrific trip, full of history, great landscapes and culture. And who knows, we might get a dram of whisky along the way. #scotland #highlands #outlander #epic_landscape #highlands #bestofscotland #hiddenscotland #thehighlandcollective #scotland_highlights #ig_scotland #visitscotland — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/aGvrQRc

Salen to Tobermory
Friday 3rd May 2024
After Friday morning pilates on deck, we slipped our mooring in warm sunshine heading back down Loch Sunart and into ever cheerful Tobermory. Caught up with the children and their news, then a short trip ashore before a quiet late afternoon and evening. We'd only had one whisky before the sight of an amphibious car cruising around the harbour came into sight...

Tobermory Hebridean Gin
The spirit of the Isle of #Mull from @TobDistillery a malty, herby #gin bought on a recent visit to @DrinkfinderUK #ginreview
Famous for its brightly painted houses that line the main street up to the pier, with a backdrop of tree-lined hills that look across the Sound of Mull, Tobermory is the principal town on the Hebridean island of Mull and the starting point for a trip to Iona. If you stay the night in the town, as I did some years ago, the whisky distillery, originally known as Ledaig Distillery when it was…

Ledaig 10 Single Malt Scotch Review   Scotland’s Isle of Mull is home to the Tobermory Distillery. It produces two lines – Tobermory, an unpeated Scotch, and Ledaig, a peated single malt whisky. Today, we explore Ledaig 10, and I share my thoughts in my latest review. Cheers!   https://reviews.whiskeyfellow.net/2023/07/ledaig-10-year-single-malt-scotch.html

Up North
A few weeks back the teamed headed North. Not often they venture that far but the travel agent who booked the trip was very keen. For once the weather was perfect for the trip. The seas were glass calm and stunning views of the small isles. They started off from the Isle of Eriska and dropped off in Mallaig via a wee whisky in Tobermory. A cracker of a run home too.

If you're passing through Eugene, OR - stop in at @thebarnlight and check out their Break Even Bottle - a one ounce pour at cost. It's an awesome opportunity to try something rare, expensive, or unique. Maybe it's all three! Today it's Ledaig 18, a sherried peat bomb scotch. It's rich, spicy, smokey, fruity, down right delicious. Thanks to Katie for lovely service! . . . #ledaig #ledaig18 #sherry #peat #isleofmull #tobermory #thebarnlight #breakevenbottle #pnw #beaversinduckcountry #aquavitae #uiscebeatha #uisgebeatha #singlemalt #scotch #whisky #whiskey #whiskyaesthetic #womenwhowhiskey @tobermorydistillery (at The Barn Light) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzER3EpH7PC/?igshid=35rxdzvaifsy

Ledaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
An Underrated, Blinding Success from the Isle of Mull
Tumblr media
When I smelled the Ledaig 10YO both in its crowded container and then in a bigger glass, I knew that Kris and I were both going to like it, a definite first on our journey! Practising balance across a small number of distinguishable aromas, the sea here is calm and welcoming, an embrace that spritzes with faint iodine like a newly shucked oyster, bacon at the seams of salty brine.
Tumblr media
There’s a hint of something floral, and then one is clothed in delightful, warm leather, as though relaxing in a dimly lit, luxuriously comfortable den furnished with aromatic hardwood.
Tumblr media
The taste is just as simple, but infinitely charming. It goes down smoothly, a warm and untroubled sea diluted to perfection. Delicate salt is dusted across the tongue, transforming at the finish to a very long note of prickling pepper. With a bit of water, the flavour of nuts stutters forward, and then slight rubber extends into abiding smoke, folds and unfolds on the tongue even minutes after I’ve swallowed. There is no confusion to this drink, only quiet confidence that reassures and then sweetens as its memory lingers well after I’ve emptied my glass.
Tumblr media
I love that it hooked us in gently, bursting at the seams with its long finish, its comparable balance, and with an unexpected richness especially for a whisky at its price range. I am so, so happy to have been introduced to it, and even happier to enjoy it with Kris over the Melbourne lockdown. I rate this an 8.5 –and would even bump it up to a 9 for sheer value –out of 10.
