Norway Fjords Road Trip (1 of 3)

Overview

Norway is one of the most beautiful places we have visited. A big reason we wanted to visit is that we loved New Zealand and heard that Norway’s scenery is similar – it did not disappoint. 

We did a 10-day road trip that included hiking, biking, and kayaking through western Norway and if anything, our key insight was that you don’t have to go to specific tourist spots to see the country’s beauty; there is striking beauty nearly everywhere. Every drive we took was incredibly scenic, and the most touristy areas (like Flam or Trollstigen) were no more beautiful than random fjord towns, mountains, and glaciers we drove by (especially the drive from Fjaerland to Geiranger!).

What we loved:

Really beautiful scenery

It’s a very high-functioning society with an excellent quality of life. Basic things that should be automated in the 21st century actually are automated, like public restroom toilets and faucets or paying for parking and tolls. Simple safeguards are put in place, like high fines for speeding (probably not a coincidence that we hardly saw any crazy drivers), a reflective safety vest in the glove compartment of every rental car, and even a handwashing sink at the entrance to at least one grocery store we visited. The whole society seems designed for practicality and ease, even in the smallest ways (e.g., single-serve yogurts at the supermarket always come with a spoon attached in the packaging. Not a plastic spoon, but a wooden one). As a result, everything feels more orderly and a little easier to navigate. It feels like the social contract is more intact in Norway than in most other countries we’ve spent time in – we didn’t see any obvious poverty (unsurprising given they have a strong social safety net), waiters don’t rely on tips to make ends meet, etc. We were impressed all around.

What we found challenging:

It’s one of the most expensive places in the world. Restaurant prices are like eating out in Manhattan (but the food isn’t necessarily as good). Hotels (quality-adjusted) are even more expensive!

There is more of a language barrier than we expected. Most signage is in Norwegian and people default to communicating in Norwegian. As a result, restaurant menus were sometimes a challenge, as was signage at some tourist attractions. While most people seemed to also speak English, sometimes they didn’t seem to understand us or be able to respond in English.

Vegetarian food options were not great. We ate a LOT of sandwiches that we made ourselves and we were very glad we brought protein bars and protein powder packets to stay well nourished (especially while hiking). 

We loved Norway and would be delighted to return, especially given its relative proximity to New York. That said, it is worth noting that New Zealand shares similar advantages without the disadvantages we noted for Norway (though perhaps its disadvantage is that it is very far away!). I’m not sure Norway has displaced New Zealand as my favorite place that I have visited, but it is very high on the list.

Itinerary

Our 10-day road trip mostly followed Earthtrekkers’ Norway fjords itinerary from 2013. This is the first in a series of blog posts detailing our travels. My hope is these details can help anyone who visits these places to have as seamless a trip as possible. 

Part I: Stavanger

Stavanger is a city in southwestern Norway that is a good landing spot for a couple of well-touristed hikes: Pulpit Rock (Priekestolen), Kjeragbolten, and Florli 4444. The main fjord accessible from here is called Lyseford. We did the first two hikes and saw Lysefjord from the top of Pulpit Rock. Overall, we thought Stavanger and the surrounding area were nice, but after subsequently seeing other parts of western Norway that really blew us away, we think this area could potentially be skipped. 

We flew into Stavanger (via a couple hour layover in Oslo). It was easy to pick up a rental car – we used Hertz – and took 25-30 mins to drive to our hotel in the city center. 

Day 1 - Pulpit Rock (Priekestolen)

This is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. We did this hike first thing after arriving from a redeye and dropping our stuff off at our hotel. On just a few hours of sleep, and with a very hot sun overhead when we started around 3:30PM, we found it to be quite tiring, but very pretty. The trail is just under 5 miles out and back and is rated Moderate – it would potentially be considered Moderate/Hard in the U.S., but this is Europe after all, and people of all ages were doing the hike. It starts off very steep - hiking sticks would be helpful – and gets easier after the first 1-1.5 km. Overall it took us 2.5 hours + a 15 min break at the top.

There isn’t much of a view for most of the hike, but at the top you’re on a cliff with a lovely view of the Lyseford down below. It’s not the most special hike we’ve ever done, but it was nice.

Logistics

Getting there: We drove ~40 mins to this hike via the fancy new Ryfylke Tunnel, a very long tunnel that looks like a cave inside and for some reason has colorful uplighting in various places. The toll was something super expensive – Hertz automatically added it to our car rental bill so we didn’t need to stop and pay (this was the case for all toll roads we drove on in Norway, and there ended up being a ton that we didn’t even know about until we saw the Hertz bill).

Parking: Parking is NOK 200 (~$20) per car. We got there around 3:15PM on a Friday and there were plenty of parking spots. 

Restrooms: Restrooms are in the parking lot and were clean.

Day 2 - Kjeragbolten

Kjeragbolten is the hike to Norway’s iconic boulder between two rocks. 

It’s a 10 km / 6 miles out-and-back hike (5 km / 3 miles each way) that is European strenuous (as opposed to American “strenuous”) – it is really hard! The terrain is rocky the entire way, unlike any other hike we can remember, and there are many parts where you’re going almost straight uphill or straight downhill, with long stretches that have chains to hold on to so you don’t just slide down the face of the rock. It’s a difficult hike not just because of how steep it is, but also because there are plenty of opportunities to lose your footing.

If you’ve done the Beehive Trail at Acadia National Park or Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, the steepness of Kjeragbolten and the corresponding necessity of the chains feels 100x. The number of times I saw the chains and thought, “that’s excessive/unnecessary” was 0. We were very glad we brought hiking sticks. We saw very few children on this hike.

There is no shade anywhere on the trail. For us the weather was extremely sunny and hot the entire time (10am-2:30pm, including ~30 mins to eat lunch and relax a bit at the top). This made the hike even harder.

The views are pretty out-of-this-world: stark mountains, some with snow still on them, and water views including lakes and fjord. We haven’t seen a lot of hikes that look like this. Earthtrekkers wrote that this is their favorite hike in the world. We liked it, but can’t say it outranks some of our all-time favorites like Tongariro National Crossing or Roy’s Peak in New Zealand, or Trolltunga and Romsdalseggen which are also in Norway. All of those hikes are pretty challenging, but for me Kjeragbolten was the hardest (well, maybe next to Romsdalseggen). Overall it took us 4 hours + ~30 mins for lunch. 

There was still quite a bit of the snow on the ground, some of which we walked through along the trail.

Logistics

Getting there: Drive 2.5 hours (each way) from Stavanger to Kjeragbolten (we just typed Kjeragbolten into Google Maps). The drive starts on a highway and then you turn onto some back roads that go by beautiful lakes/fjords. Finally you drive ~25 km up an extremely narrow and winding road – it looks like it is one-way, but it’s not, so drive carefully! – with gorgeous views to the start of the hike.

Parking lot: We read online that there are 400 parking spots, though it didn’t look like that many in person. There were plenty of open spots when we arrived on a Saturday at 10am, and also when we left around 3pm, which we thought was a bit surprising for such a well-known hike. The cost is NOK 300 (~$30) per car and you can pay by credit card at a parking machine upon arrival; make sure to put the parking voucher on your dashboard.

Restrooms: The restrooms are at the parking lot. There were several stalls and it was clean. We did not see any bathrooms during the hike, and it’s very open so there weren’t really places to go along the trail.

Day 3 - Walking in the ‘burbs

We were feeling tired and lazy after Kjeragbolten. Instead of following our original plan of hiking Florli 4444 – a hike in the town of Florli, along the Lysefjord, that entails going up >4,444 steps (!) – we slept in, got brunch, napped, and did a ~5-mile walk around Stokkavetnet, a very nice lake just a few minutes’ drive outside of Stavanger city center. It reminded us a bit of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park (minus the mountains) – we saw horses, deer, a golf course, kayaking, and lots of people swimming, biking, and jogging. It was really nice to see a less touristy side of Stavanger, and it reinforced our perception that locals can enjoy a really nice quality of life.

Note: If you do want to hike Florli 4444, you can take the Kolumbus Ferry from Lauvvik (a ~40 min drive from Stavanger) to Florli for ~$14 per person roundtrip. Tickets can be booked online; when we looked the night before we intended to go, the ferry was sold out. You can also book an excursion directly from Stavanger via gofjords.com (which was also sold out) or via Rodne tours which was charging ~$80 per person roundtrip. Given the number of stairs involved, we do not regret skipping this hike.

Stavanger: Things to Know

It seems to be pronounced like “stuh-VAHN-gur” 

There are so many roundabouts! We didn’t encounter a single traffic light in the town or on any of our drives to hikes in the area.

The downtown has lots of places to eat, including the best vegetarian options we were able to find during our Norway trip. We liked Mogul India – the bhindi (okra), palak paneer (cottage cheese in spinach), and sabudana vada (sago fritter) were great – and Wanna Thai was also pretty good – we were fans of the massaman curry with tofu. There was a vegan Vietnamese place (Chay Vegan) that we were interested in but never had a chance to try.

Downtown also has multiple supermarkets if you want to pack sandwich materials for lunches, etc.

There are quite a few hotels downtown. We stayed at the Radisson Blu and it was fine, though nothing special for how expensive it was – clean and comfortable enough, Manhattan-sized hotel rooms (i.e., very small, which we came to learn is common across Norway).

All parking in the town is public (and I think free?). We parked at the Olav Parking Garage just around the corner from our hotel.

The town is very touristy. The hikes were full of people speaking Russian and Spanish, and occasionally some other languages, and the main strip downtown was packed with what appeared to be tourists from a cruise ship docked along the water.

There has been much debate over the past several winters about these new “mega” season passes for skiing and snowboarding, locals hate them but many others love them.  Rather than shelling out roughly $500-$1000 for a season pass at a single resort the Epic Pass or Ikon Pass allow you access to a multitude of mountains across the globe for a fixed number of days at each resort for around the same cost.  When the price per day of skiing at some of these popular mountains is upwards of $200 daily, a $600-$1050 season pass seems like a bargain. 

Over the past several seasons locals have grown to hate this mega pass.  The mountains are significantly busier, there are more inexperienced skiers and boarders on more advanced mountains, bars and restaurants are more crowded, prices in the ski towns are increasing and long-term rental properties for these locals are becoming more and more difficult to afford.  Owners of these properties turn to Airbnb and VRBO to capture the effects of the rising demands and increased rental prices-a positive for the owners and negative for the locals.

The costs of the skiing & snowboarding market in the United States are unfortunately rising due to lower overall attendance and downward trending interest from new skiers and boarders.  These resorts have to cover costs and do whatever they can to maximize profits so the major players have been purchasing and consolidated large resorts across the United State.  Vail Resorts (Epic Pass) and Alterra (IKON Pass) are the two major players in the market and the mega season passes seem to be working for themselves and investors and  many of the resorts included on these passes have seen over 20% increase in revenue during the first year they join.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology although not new has really made these passes work across the U.S. and made the overall process smooth, attractive and beneficial for both users and the ski companies.  The RFID technology has allowed all these mega season pass holders to get a single card, keep it in their pocket and access all of these mountains for the allocated days without having to step foot in the ticket line.  The RFID ticket is just like an EZ pass used in a car on a toll road for the Ski Mountains.   You simply go to one of the gates in front a ski lift, walk through it and the RFID technology will scan your card in your pocket and let you go on the lift and users absolutely love it.  

The RFID technology also allows these big companies to gain valuable data from their skiers and snowboarders which can help them try to analyze user visits and predict their operating costs better.  It is always interesting seeing old industries using newer technologies to help advance both the user experience and the business operations.  

Operating costs are extremely expensive when operating these ski mountains and any data that can be analyzed to help reduce these costs is extremely valuable.  The data collected from when skiers and snowboarders visit, how long they ski and where they ski on a mountain can help provide useful information.   The information generated, such as what are peak times, when maintenance work should be done so that lifts are not down during peak times, when and how often snow grooming is needed and also at what times to hire more workers during specific uptick in traffic periods across the season.

These affordable season passes coupled with the outreaches of social media have also attracted a massive new wave of skiers and boarders to these mountains.  Those who once would just see an advertisement or email of a mountain or hear about a great ski trip through friends are constantly seeing crazy videos of fresh powder, glades and 20-foot cliff drops.  

Many of these videos and images tag #IKONPASS, #AdeventureRunsDeep or #EPICforEveryone and these skiers and boarders can now see the tags in these videos, find locations and find out if these mountains are included in these season passes (many of which are).  Many have in-turn then purchased these affordable season passes and plan trips to these once unknown, secret, “locals only” locations and give all these resorts a try.  I personally bought an Ikon pass and went to Jackson Hole resort after seeing a video of someone skiing down Corbets Couloir.

Even though many of the ski bums and townies hate these season passes they are bringing thousands of new tourists to once unknown resorts.  The owners and investors as well as property and business owners and mega pass season ticket holders are loving it and the economies in these ski towns are booming.  It seems like everyone wins…minus the locals unfortunately.

Day 1: HNL->YVR->YYZ->Ann Arbor

Day 1 was technically two days, but since it consisted of ~28 hours of continuous transit, we decided it would be best to lump it into a single day.

The day started off with Casey being a wonderful human by dropping Travis, Jeff, and Deep off at the airport so Deep could embark on his journey home, and Jeff and Travis could begin their journey stateside. Deep, having a fancy adult-credit card, had access to Hawaiian Airlines’ premium Plumeria Lounge and was able to bring Travis and Jeff along with him, which was an excellent start to a long day of transit, as the lounge, in addition to having an assortment of fruit and snacks, had free beer, wine, sweet bun grilled veggie sliders, and pastrami sandwiches. After getting our fill of free and satisfying hors d’ oevres, and playing ample amounts of Super Smash Brothers on Jeff’s Switch, we (Travis and Jeff), split off from Deep and boarded our plane toward Vancouver, which was the first leg of our air transit. Upon boarding the plane, we had learned that we lucked out and had an entire row to ourselves, so we spent the majority of the flight playing Super Smash Brothers together, which was an excellent way to pass the time by.

We landed at around 11:30pm local time, and upon landing, realized that we hadn’t yet eaten dinner, so despite not knowing how late facilities stayed open in the Vancouver airport, we set our sights on getting some food as soon as possible. Passing through customs was relatively painless, though Jeff got a nice looking mugshot through the customs kiosk of which he is sad he did not obtain a permanent copy so he could post pictures of his “angry eye” shot. In the end, we ended up finding a Tim Horton’s which had surprisingly tasty and satisfying dinner-type sandwiches that satiated us through breakfast the next morning. After finishing our meals at Tim Horton’s, both of us took a much needed poop and eventually found a “comfy” bench to sleep on, after spending some time exploring the airport and finding an attached hotel that was way beyond either of our price points.

After sleeping on our benches for a few hours, we woke up, passed through security, and embarked on our flight to Toronto where both of us were able to catch up on some much needed sleep.

Upon arriving in Toronto, we picked up our rental car without any issues and Jeff began driving toward Ann Arbor. About an hour into the drive, we realized that we hadn’t eaten a proper meal in the past ~8 hours, so, per recommendation of Rob (Jeff’s roommate and also lovely human), we stopped off a Harvey’s for a burger. Travis ordered a run of the mill standard burger, while Jeff ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich. Though the burger was admittedly underwhelming, the chicken sandwich was pretty satisfying, so Jeff walked out satiated and in good spirits. That said, Jeff was also exhausted, so Travis took over driving for the rest of the journey.

To try to save money, we intentionally chose routes that excluded toll roads, which led Travis and Jeff to unintentionally follow a route where we crossed over into the United States by ferry. Upon arriving at the ferry dock, we were greeted by a boat so small that as soon as we paid the $8.00 fee to take the boat, the boat departed immediately with us being the only vehicle on the boat. The ride itself took maybe 10-15 minutes but was tranquil and beautiful; truly a singular experience that Travis and me will remember fondly when reflecting back on this trip. Little unexpected journeys such as these seem to be what make road trips so memorable.

The rest of the drive from the border to Ann Arbor, albeit not as memorable, was quite smooth. After checking into our Hotel, Travis and me decided to unwind with a run and after a meandering 4 mile jaunt, stopped off at a local bar called Craft Breww City. The bartender, Tim, was incredibly friendly and we had an excellent time chatting with him about life, school, and of course beer. Travis was able to check off 5 beers from his list of beers he’d never tried and in the end, Tim gave us free shots to cap off the evening. I’m now sitting in bed reminiscing over this day and am looking forward to a full night’s sleep. Day 1 was both exhausting and excellent, and we are now eagerly speculating about what is in store for the rest of our trip...or at least what’s in store for our continental breakfast tomorrow morning ;)

I just now returned from a shopping trip in Dystopia, Grants Pass Oregon where all of the US Citizens were brutally murdered, and all were replaced with an Organized and specially trained un-conventional terror army from Canada, most are from Quebec, many are third generation terror soldiers who are children and grand children of the original invading terror army.

I am the last remaining US Citizen in Oregon who has not been killed and replaced with a Canadian imposter, or taken captive as a slave.

I went to Walmart.

I want to keep this short, as I am not feeling well, the effects of the repetitive long term exposure the poison gasses used as a weapon by the terror army are taking a toll on me drastically.

notable conditions at Walmart:

There were five yellow vested Walmart terror associates at the entry to the store, at least one of them was using an electronic tablet sized device to identify everyone who enters the store, the five were huddled in group, and they demand a mask be worn at the instant the Walmart shoppers enter the store. If you don‘t have a mask on your face as you enter, one of those yellow vested Walmart terror associates approaches to give you a mask, they walk towards the person with their arm extended, the same as a nitrous gas soldiers does on an attack approach while releasing nitrous oxide gas into the face of the intended victim.

I lit my lighter as I grabbed a shopping cart and put my mask on.

At that moment, the five yellow vests all dispersed away from the store entry. One of them looked at me and said: “Sacre Blueau!, he’s not dead!”

It’s been five weeks since I went shopping for food, the Walmart terror army was surprised to see me alive.

Very notable to me, was all of the usual items that I want to purchase, were all in stock, on the shelf, and easy to reach. That is unusual. They use the “Debit Card Chip Reading Feature” to analyze my shopping habits of products I purchase, so when I leave to go to the store, the Monroe terror cell contacts the Walmart terror cell to tell them that I have left my house, other terror scouts also know where I am when I leave my house, so, when I get to the store, they have already removed many of the items I want to purchase from the shelves. If they don’t remove the items completely, they make the items I want to get, difficult to reach. One of the favorite things the Walmart terror likes to do to me, is to make the Jimmy Dean Sausage product such that I must kneel down on the floor, and reach way in the very back part of the shelve, where there are only two of the sausage packages. Another thing they do, is remove most of the orange juice of the variety that my debit card chip indicates that I like to buy, and there is usually just two cartons of orange juice on the highest shelf, way in the very back of the shelf.

The Walmart knows that I have a spinal cord injury, so, they make it hurt to make a purchase there in every way they are able to, without looking as if they do it intentionally.

Other important condition at Walmart today was the banana’s. They moved the banana’s from their usual place, and put onions where the banana’s usually are kept. They added a completely new banana display at a place where there usually is no display, at the end of the frozen meat floor mounted cooler. That is a communication, one that says: “We are having problems associated with the forced castration that we do to the young US boys”. Also, the banana’s did not scan on the self checkout, the scanner would not read the banana’s, I tried only twice to scan them and like Johnny on the Spot, a Walmart Yellow Vest came to the checkout I was using to explain to me that the banana’s don‘t ring up as they should, then she pushed a few buttons, and the price for the banana’s was added to my total. That further verifies in terror code that there is a problem about knowledge of forced castration of the US School Students that was done in the early 2000′s, I suspect they still do the castration, however, there are no more US citizens to castrate any more in Oregon, so, maybe some of the victims of the forced castration that was done have had oportunity to explain why they their penis and testicles were removed. I am optimistic that one day, the truth will become known, Twitter will be shut down, and Walmart will be held accountable for the atrocities they have conducted at the Walmart stores.

When I left the store, the courtesy lights on my car were on. Someone had used a remote control devise to turn on the courtesy lights to my car, to drain my battery while parked in the Walmart parking lot. I was not able to shut the courtesy lights off, even when I disconnected the battery momentarily at the Walmart, the courtesy lights remained turned on, and there was no way to shut them off.

This next thing is important to understand:

There is a number of white pick-up trucks that patrol the Grants Pass area, they have he word “Locate” on the door. There is one “Locate” truck that stays parked at the Elmer’s Restaurant parking lot much of the time. What I notice about the “Locate” trucks, is that if I do not go directly home from the Walmart, that “Locate” truck is summoned into action, so, If I choose to go to the Carl’s Jr. or to the In-n-Out Burger before coming home, that “Locate” truck comes to find where I have gone. Today, the “Locate” truck was called to duty when I chose to go to the AM/PM before getting on my way home. That “Locate” truck came to find me at the AM/PM, and then, my courtesy lights turned on again as the “Locate” truck had located my car at the AM/PM Luke’s Arco.

The notable thing about the car in the trailer is that it looks like a particular Morris Minor, a red one, that is like a historic figure in Grants Pass for about fifty years. That Morris Minor is part of a place that used to be called “Gorilla Gram” on 6th Street.

So, rather than say a lot of terror associated with Gorilla Gram’s Morris Minor, I’ll just point out that if that car has been missing, then, you may find it inside of a very long, more than fifty feet long, home-made looking trailer that is parked at Clyde Baum’s terror cell at 333 Jackpine. If you like to spend time in the nature, you love trekking in national parks and over the cliffs, you adore walking in deserted areas and driving on winding roads but of good quality, then you should get the plane tickets asap! What's more, the evergreen island is proud of its rich history related to, among others, the Vikings, and thus have a multitude of medieval, well-preserved buildings. It is safe to say that Ireland is in a sense a foretaste of Norway or Iceland, or simply a cheaper alternative, although this direction is not at all the cheapest.

   To show you the prices that apply in Ireland and to help you plan your holiday budget, I present below an exact list of expenses that I had during a week's trip to this country. I travelled during the long May weekend, so I had to pay higher price for the plane ticket.  1. PLANE TICKET – 111 euro (Ryanair)

I booked the tickets three and a half weeks before departure. I could only take hand luggage, because I did not buy any additional options (no allocated space, entrance priority, main luggage, etc.). Check-in was possible for 4 days to 2 hours before departure. The hand baggage dimensions are: 1 piece of hand luggage (55 x 40 x 20 cm) + 1 handbag (35 x 20 x 20 cm) - always make sure to check the up-to-date dimensions, because they change like in a kaleidoscope.

TIP: The backpack as hand luggage is the best alternative - it will probably not be measured or weighed, and what's more, the service allows you to take it on board without any problems!

2. TRAVEL INSURANCE – 16 euro

I bought the insurance online in Generali a few days before the trip and chose a flexible package, i.e. I adjusted the amount of the refund eg the cost of treatment or stolen hand luggage.

TIP: It is important that the insured person at the time of insurance is in the country - then it is cheaper.

 3. ACCOMMODATION – 496 euro / per room (248 euro / per person):

Monday to Tuesday – B&B in Tallow -> 65 euro / per room

  4. CAR RENTAL – 189 euro / four days Rental company: Hertz (at the airport, without prior reservation). Car: Renault Kadjar, 1.6 diesel, The price included: full insurance + tire insurance, two drivers and unlimited kilometers. A credit card is required, on which the total cost of car rental and the full tank cost have been secured. The car was refueled, it could be handed over with a full or empty tank (then the fuel cost was deducted from the credit card). After handing over the car, you could pay for rental in cash, therefore the secured funds on the credit card were released.

5. MOTORWAYS – 14.80 euro The motorway around Dublin M50 TOLL costs 3.10 euro one way. The rental company automatically calculates the costs through the sensor in the car, and the amount is charged from the credit card a few days after the car is handed over. On other highways you can pay in cash (by throwing the exact amount to a special coin-operated funnel, or pay in the window), or by debit or credit card. The usual price is 1.90 or 2.90 euros.

 6. PETROL – 99 euro together

1 liter of diesel costed circa 1.29 euro. We made 1390 km within four days and refueled the car twice.

7. FOOD AND DRINK – 180 euro / per person
