This week, the great Toomas Rein (b 1940) was announced as the laureate of this year's State Culture Prize -- a worthy honour for an architect whose career spans more than half a century and whose unique buildings have helped shape the face of many cities and even more rural settlements in Estonia. Pictured here is the Rapla Kolkhoz Construction Company HQ from 1971--77, situated not far from Tallinn. In the first photo, shot by Rein himself?, you can spot his dear friend Leonhard Lapin under the basket; the second photo is by Arvi Kriis. The legendary kindergarten Trall in Pärnu, Estonia, designed by Toomas Rein with interiors by Helle Gans, and completed in 1978. The one-off building was commissioned by the Pärnu Kolkhoz Construction Office - a sort of (very wealthy) capitalist entity within the Soviet system - and is located in the impressive, albeit unfinished, residential quarter of the company employees. And we hear it's currently being renovated! 😄 Our exhibition "Come Out and Play. Modern Kindergartens" curated by Sandra Mälk is open for its last days, until August 25.
