2018. március 27-én délután kihirdették egy díjátadó és egy ebéd keretében Ázsia 50 legjobb éttermének listáját a Makaói Wynn Palace Cotai – ban. A S.Pellegrino és Acqua Panna által támogatott rendezvényen a győztes a Gaggan étterem lett Bangokból. A rendezvényen az 50 legjobb étterem mellett díjazták többek között a legjobb női séfet, a legjobb életutat, a legjobb pastry chef – et is. Mondhatnánk, hogy Gaggan Anand séf mindet visz, és akkor nem tévednénk nagyot, mert már negyedik éve, hogy övé a legjobb étterem egy olyan régióban, ahol számtalan jó és még jobb vendéglő versenyez ezért a helyért, és mégis egy indiai viszi el a pálmát, aki Thaiföldön nyűgözi le a világot. Kérdés a világ 50 legjobb étterme címért is versenyezhet?
Makaó adott otthont a The World Best 50 Restaurants Asias rendezvénynek, amelyen a szakma különböző résztvevői, befolyásos séfek és kulináris vezetők választották meg a régió legjobbjait. A lista jól tükrözi a mai gasztrónómiai szemléletet és az irányt amerre a jövő kulináris fejlődése tart. Makaó először volt házigazdája ennek a patináns eseménynek, amely megmutatja, hogy ez az ország kiemelt célpontjává vált az ételek szerelmeseinek. Az ország hihetetlen gazdag gasztrohagyatékkal rendelkezik, a portugál gyarmati hatások, az itt élő portugálok rendkívül mélyen színesítették a kínai gyökerekkel rendelkező Makaói konyhát. Különlegessége abban rejlik, hogy nagy szerepet kapott a fűszerkereskedelemben, amely során a világ minden pontjáról érkeztek ide utazók, akik magukkal hozták alapanyagaikat, főzési stílusaikat és ételeiket, amely által a Makaói konyha igazán sokszínűvé válhatott. Ma aki ide érkezik egy dinamikusan fejlődő gazdasággal rendelkező országot talál, ahol a strett food világától a fine dining – ig mindent megtalálhat. A listára csak egy étterem a Jade Dragon kerülhetett fel, amely a magyar Onyx Étteremhez hasonlóan két Michelin csillaggal rendelkezik.

A 2018 – as listára 8 új  és 2 visszatérő étterem kerülhetett be, amelyek 11 országból kvalifikáltak, a legtöbbet Japán (11 étterem, a 2. és a 3. helyezett a Den és a Florilège Tokióból), 9 – et Thaiföld (Gaggan), Hongkong, 7 – et pedig Szingapúr. Az első 10 helyezetten összesen 4 ország osztozott Thaiföld, Kína, Japán, Szingapúr. Ezek az információk jól mutatják melyek Ázsia kulináris és gazdasági központjai. Kína és Japán szerepe vitathatatlan, már csak történelmi és gazdasági szerepük miatt is, azonban a kistigrisek közé tartozó Szingapúr, valamint a turisztikai központként az egyik legforgalmasabb országként Thaiföldé sem elhanyagolható. Bangkok, mint a világ második leglátogatottabb városa a jövőben egyre fontosabb és meghatározóbb szerepet fog betölteni a szakmában.  De beszéljenek helyettünk a képek, a következő infografikák mindent elmondanak.
A The World Best 50 Restaurants Asias szavazása komoly és átgondolt rendszeren alapszik.  A William Reed Business Media az esemény szervezője, a The World’s 50 Best Restaurants és Latin-Amerika 50 legjobb étterme, az ázsiai 50 legjobb étterme mögött álló emberek egy pillantást vetnek több mint 300 éttermi iparági szakértő véleményére és tapasztalataira Ázsiában.
A “legjobbnak” minősített éttermeket a megbízható, világot látott ínyencek megítélése alapján szavazzák meg. A lista a szavazatok egyszerű kiszámításának eredménye. Mivel ez a lista személyes tapasztalatokon alapul, soha nem lehet végleges, de úgy vélik, hogy ez a felmérés a jelenlegi kulináris helyzet hiteles útmutatója lehet a legjobb étkezési helyeknek egész Ázsiában.

India és szubkontinens;

A divíziókat úgy alakították ki, hogy az ázsiai éttermi jelenlétet a lehető legteljesebb mértékben képviseljék a jelenlegi időben.
Minden régiónak van saját 53 tagú testülete, köztük egy elnöke is. A panel élelmiszer-írókból és kritikusokból, szakácsokból, vendéglőkből és nagyra értékelt “foodies” -ból áll. Minden tagnak tíz szavazata van. A tíz szavazatból legalább négyet kell használni.
A szavazás legfontosabb szabályai:
A szavazás szigorúan bizalmas a lista bejelentése előtt.
A tagok tíz éttermet szavaznak meg, amelyek közül legalább négynek a saját országukon kívül kell lennie.
A szavazóknak az elmúlt 18 hónapban megnevezett éttermekben étkezniük kellett.
A szavazók nem szavazhatnak az általuk birtokolt vagy pénzügyi érdekeltségű éttermekről.
Megnevezni az éttermet kell, nem pedig a vendéglátót vagy a szakácsot.
A tagok a preferenciák sorrendjében nyújtják be a tíz választást (ezt az információt arra használják, hogy döntsön a pozícióról).
  Nincs olyan kritérium, amelynek az éttermeknek meg kell felelnie. Természetesen nem kell eladni egy bizonyos terméket. Nem kellett volna egy bizonyos számú évig nyitva tartani őket, és nem kellett volna más kulináris elismerést megnyerni.
A győztes: Gaggan Restaurant, Bangkok
