THROWBACK BROTHERS in BLUE - O’SHEA ROBERTSON . Mr. O’Shea Robertson: consistently brilliant, ridiculously prolific, a favorite of top-drawer brands, designers, casting agents & photographers around the globe. I’ve been TeamO’Shea since my glimpse of him in 2010. Then there was that time in 2016 that I wholly besmirched his extremely classy image by turning him into a 3D caricature. hahaha. . O’Shea has not only been extremely good for the modeling industry (and eyes of the upcoming generations absorbing images of “the ideal male,” he has been extremely good to me personally. One of the realest, kindest, wittiest & intellectually generous souls I’ve come across in the past decade of bouncing around the modeling world. . Some of you may know that my formal education was in the now archaic artform of 2D animation, trained by Disney artists at CalArts. On rare occasions I dip my toe back into areas of the art form. Caricatures are not my strong suit but I still subject some of my most-respected favs to my digital pen. My next couple posts will lean more towards my “drawn” (non-photo realistic) work… staying within the blue theme, of course. Its also a prelude to my yearly “TuTchT Comics Casting” Halloween series where I cast some of my favorite models of color as superheroes of color. My schedule is absolutely insane right now as I’m taking on too much extra work to try to make ends meet in my COVID-ravaged financial situation… but I do have 2 new “comics casting pieces started. As someone who deals extensively in male images and what they mean to the masses, the concept of “All-American” is something that has always intrigued me. The visual definition has changed throughout my lifetime, in both my personal assessment and in the eyes of society at large. Over the past several years I don’t think I’ve seen any face I’d call truly “All-American” than Haitian-American superstar model Ralph Souffrant, complete (and resplendent) with the proverbial freckles. . Another favorite portrait from my 2015 “Chill” series (see previous post) was of one of my favorite models and favorite fam in the industry, Reefy the peace maker, (better known in the proper Fashion world as the proper Mr. Chariffe Greaves.) . Reefy has stepped fully into the next chapter of his life as an emcee with some very dope audio offerings to the ears of the planet & some incredibly well-produced vids to match the flow. THROWBACK BROTHERS in BLUE - MAC PHIRI . In July of 2015 after a record run of sweltering 100+ degree days, I created a group of icy blue portraits in a “Chill” series. This joint of Brit brother Mac Phiri was one of outstanding results of the aforementioned chilling. . Mac Phiri was discovered and signed in 2013 & climbed to the upper ranks of male models of color at a point in the industry when London’s AMCK agency signed a board full of amazing black male models. This joint was designed from one of the uncredited shots in Mac’s AMCK portfolio. In recent years the internationally celebrated Mr. Phiri has largely stepped back from the industry whirlwind, shifting his focus to other interests, foraying his celebrity to his music career and event planning. . FRIDAY FAM DROP - GER DUANY WALK TOWARDS THE RISING SUN . One of my favorite people on this planet is my brother Ger Duany. I can honestly say I’ve never been so simultaneously (and constantly) intrigued, inspired, amused, enlightened and enriched by a person. The story of a child-of-war is traumatic beyond what most of us can imagine. The task of revisiting and analyzing these memories is something that many don’t have the bravery to delve into. . I have been on the outskirts of Ger’s life for about a decade now and I know he has been wrestling with how to tell his life story since around 2003. Our initial interactions were based on artwork during his years as a top NYC model and gradually deepened as time went on. In the past three years Ger quietly opened the doors of his “memoir journey” to me and invited me in and take a look at what he was creating (I will be forever grateful for this privilege.) Riveting is an understatement. . Ger’s story is raw and sometimes jarring beyond belief and the version he presented to the world could have gone in many different directions. As a testament to his deep, soul-driven purpose to help others navigate the struggles he faced, he made the decision with his publishers, to write his memoir for the YA Market (Young Adults.) The decision to plant the seed in the younger generation gets my mad respect. But yo, trust me… this is not a simple “kid’s book.” It is full of raw truth and hard-to-believe stories that will appeal to and inspire EVERYONE as Ger goes from the lowest lows to the highest highs (& not necessarily in a straight line.) SAMUEL BARRIE Get ready USA, one of the top male models of color in Australia has signed with Two Model Management and he’ll be hitting our American shores next month, right after completing Australian Fashion Week. If you follow me closely you know I’ve put the spotlight on Mr. Barrie several times since our paths first crossed a couple years ago. He’s only been in the game a little more than a year with Chic Mgmt in Sydney but he’s already become one of the most in-demand models of color on the continent. His skills extend into other areas as well. He’s a very talented producer/songwriter/filmmaker who’s nearing a release date on a years-on-the-making video album project which will be unveiled as a webseries in the latter part of this year. I could write another coupla paragraphs about how talented I think this kid is… but the best way to express it is to let the cat out the TuTchTbag and reveal that of all the amazing folk I’ve met over the years, its the aforementioned Mr. Samuel Barrie whom I’ve chosen to team up with on a number projects in the coming years. Sometimes you vibe with someone in so many areas that collaboration becomes inevitable. The Samuel-Barrie-meets-Tim-Long vibe will be a twisted thing to behold indeed! So stay tuned folks. HARRY UZOKA Today is the one month anniversary of Harry’s passing. (For any who are unaware. Harry was a brilliant UK-based international model who was needlessly & fatally stabbed near his home over some pettiness by others in the Industry.) Harry had a huge impact on my life & work as a graphic artist. I first saw Harry shortly after he was signed as an 18-year-old. His ability to tap into a deep well of Truth and subtly translate across his face was immediately apparent to me. Although he was celebrated and loved for his outgoing, fun-loving effervescence, this brother simultaneously had endless stories behind his eyes than never ceased to intrigue me in the deepest ways. He served as the model for many of my most deeply felt TuTchT works. In short, he was (and will remain) one of my most important muses. During the seven years I interacted with Harry, I was constantly shining as much light as I could on his body of work so that as many as possible could experience his genius. And since he was born to it, naturally, many did. By his death he had affected millions around the globe. ---In trying to decide how to process his death, one decision I made was to post images of Harry on the 11th of each month for as long as I have a social media presence. I will also create a new portrait of Harry each year on the anniversary of his passing. I revisited one of my earliest portraits of Harry for this particular post. I first created this for the initial work in my “Lost Boys” series which touched on the connective issues between third world child soldiers and inner city violence in the Western world. (now an even more soul-wrenching irony.) Harry was 19 at the time I created this.
