THROWBACK BROTHERS in BLUE - O’SHEA ROBERTSON . Mr. O’Shea Robertson: consistently brilliant, ridiculously prolific, a favorite of top-drawer brands, designers, casting agents & photographers around the globe. I’ve been TeamO’Shea since my glimpse of him in 2010. Then there was that time in 2016 that I wholly besmirched his extremely classy image by turning him into a 3D caricature. hahaha. . O’Shea has not only been extremely good for the modeling industry (and eyes of the upcoming generations absorbing images of “the ideal male,” he has been extremely good to me personally. One of the realest, kindest, wittiest & intellectually generous souls I’ve come across in the past decade of bouncing around the modeling world. . Some of you may know that my formal education was in the now archaic artform of 2D animation, trained by Disney artists at CalArts. On rare occasions I dip my toe back into areas of the art form. Caricatures are not my strong suit but I still subject some of my most-respected favs to my digital pen. My next couple posts will lean more towards my “drawn” (non-photo realistic) work… staying within the blue theme, of course. Its also a prelude to my yearly “TuTchT Comics Casting” Halloween series where I cast some of my favorite models of color as superheroes of color. FRIDAY FAM DROPS - LIL BUCK: REAL SWAN There’s not much I haven’t said about fam & International dance star Charles “Lil Buck” Riley over the decade we’ve been connected. There’s few heights he hasn’t reached, triumphs that make jaws drop when you read them on paper but are often accomplished with surprisingly little fanfare because of the humble, low-key, easy-going dignity this brother brings to everything he puts his hands/feet to. . The documentary Lil Buck: Real Swan has been in production for many years. It explores Buck’s life and his rise to international success as well as the deeper roots of Memphis Jookin and how Buck fits into (and has shaped) the history of the style. The award-winning film is a passion project fueled by the artistic vision and storytelling skills of French director/screenwriter Louis Wallecan. The film premiered at Tribeca last year to wide critical praise and went on to win Best Documentary at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival. . Covid has slowed ALL of our projects down but I was thrilled to see that the film received a big international premiere in Paris in mid August. Once again, its been receiving rave reviews and has run for 4 consecutive weeks in Paris. Can’t wait till its available to wider audiences here. Big ups to the Fam on the premiere. TuTchT COMICS CASTING - Samuel Barrie as Miles Morales This is actually my 2nd Miles Morales portrait, the 1st was Lucas Cristiano in ‘13 as Miles was gaining steam as Marvel’s new Spider-Man. With the release of last year’s Oscar-Winning “Into the Spider-verse” a new take on the character grabbed the mind of the public. . Simultaneously, a young model based in Sydney, Aus, Samuel Barrie, was also gaining steam. The animated film quickly became one of my all-time favs… as did the multi-talented Mr. Barrie. Sam made the leap to the US market last year and because of our shared interests in music, screenwriting, filmmaking, our penchant for irreverent truth-telling, an unquenchable curiosity and quest for great storytelling, Sam & I became fast fam - with many collaborations in the works! . This portrait of Sam as Miles has some major depth to it. Rather than the stereotypical heroic fight stance, I opted for this more truthful pose. Why does the public love Miles Morales? Because he is a young outsider struggling to come to grips with the incredible set of gifts & skills fate has bestowed on him; trying to fully embrace his purpose while under the scrutinizing, judgmental gaze of those around him who expect him to embrace his super-heroism while also doubting him and attempting to manipulate him. Welcome, Misters Morales and Barrie to the life of a superhero. . You’ll see lots more of Sam in 2020 as he’s adding international agencies to his resume this year. SAMUEL BARRIE Get ready USA, one of the top male models of color in Australia has signed with Two Model Management and he’ll be hitting our American shores next month, right after completing Australian Fashion Week. If you follow me closely you know I’ve put the spotlight on Mr. Barrie several times since our paths first crossed a couple years ago. He’s only been in the game a little more than a year with Chic Mgmt in Sydney but he’s already become one of the most in-demand models of color on the continent. His skills extend into other areas as well. He’s a very talented producer/songwriter/filmmaker who’s nearing a release date on a years-on-the-making video album project which will be unveiled as a webseries in the latter part of this year. I could write another coupla paragraphs about how talented I think this kid is… but the best way to express it is to let the cat out the TuTchTbag and reveal that of all the amazing folk I’ve met over the years, its the aforementioned Mr. Samuel Barrie whom I’ve chosen to team up with on a number projects in the coming years. Sometimes you vibe with someone in so many areas that collaboration becomes inevitable. The Samuel-Barrie-meets-Tim-Long vibe will be a twisted thing to behold indeed! So stay tuned folks. SAM3L - 4Ls . I’ll start my Friday Fam Drops with this enigmatic piece from my brother Samuel Barrie, an all-around creative who’s masterminded a unique musical journey under the guise of his alter ego SAM3L ( which he introduced earlier this year with the statement, “I became ‘Samel’ when I dropped ‘u’”) . This unusual introductory joint, “4Ls,” is a 7min underscore with spoken word that functions as a sort of overture/prologue for a large scale project Sam has been constructing for years. I can’t say much more about it, except take a listen and stay tuned!!! . I was blessed to connect with Samuel a little over a year ago. He has become a trusted collaborator, a intellectual and creative sounding board, and a close friend during this time. It was an honor to join the massively talented creative team that is bringing this project to life. I think I can reveal (shhhhhhhh) that the beautifully shot cinematic video for 4Ls is completed and ready for release but Sam is following the audio-release-first model. He wasn’t satisfied with just some quickly thrown-together image to accompany the release like many indie artists, so he carefully curated the creation of a dope, evocative original painting by the creepily brilliant artist maevlly and then sat down with me to plan ways to subtly bring another layer of life to the artwork with some limited-motion animation, each one a deep-rooted, fore-shadowing metaphor. . This visual art work version dropped earlier this week. You can watch it in full on YouTube (link currently in Sam’s bio.) TuTchTMas AFTERGLOW - VALENTINE for SAKS TuTchTFam Valentine lent his classic beaming smile to NYC’s storied retailer Saks Fifth Avenue this season. They knew only a warm, sincere, million-watt smile could stand side-by-side with their world-famous store lighting ceremony which lit the legendary street with a jaw-dropping array of sparking state-of-the-art luminous magic. This year’s Saks-Disney collab was a Frozen-themed spectacular featuring a shimmering original score and live performance by “Let it Go” vocalist Idina Menzel. . Greatness is, indeed, everywhere for those with an eye to see it. Holiday kuddos, Saks, for honing in on the considerable talents of Mr. Valentine Rontez. His infectious smile definitely did its infectious trick as smiling on-lookers lined the streets to see Saks’ famous facade light up the city. Not even his canine cohort in the spot was immune, donning a holiday ear-to-ear. . Having followed this young brother from the earliest days of his career, I know that even with a resume which is the envy of the rank and file, the total package of what he has to offer is still largely slumbered on. He is truly a gift that will keep on giving throughout the coming new decade.
