Norwegian / old norse names and places

Every now and then I come across a book, movie, TV-series, fanfic, game or whatever, that mention a fictional "Norwegian" or "norse" place or person, and it just sounds so wrong it makes me either cringe or ROFL. Really. I still haven't recovered from the 1995 X-files episode, "Død Kalm", which took us to the port of "Tildeskan" where we met "Henry Trondheim", "Halverson" and "Olafsson".  Hopefully this list will keep others from being that “creative” with names. :)

Names usage Double names, like Ragnhild Johanne or Ole Martin are common in Norway. Just keep them as two names and don't use "-", and you'll be safe, even if it ends up a tongue twister. Using only one of two given names is also common practice.

In Norway everyone is on a first name basis. Students call teachers and other kids' parents by their first name, workers call their boss by their first name, we call our Prime Minister by her first name (journalists will use her title when speaking to her though). Some senior citizens still use surnames and titles when speaking of or to  people their own age.

There are some exceptions. For example, a doctor may be referred to as Dr. Lastname when we speak of them, but first name is used when speaking to them. A priest is "the priest" when speaking of him/her and their first name is used when spaking to them. In the millitary only surnames (and ranks) are used. If you meet Harald, the King of Norway, in an official setting you will refer to him as "Kongen" (the king). If you run into him at the gas station, or while hiking, he is "Harald".

If you don't know someone's name it is okay to use their title, or just say "you".

Surnames

Surnames weren't really a thing until 1923 when they became mandatory. Before 1923 patronyms (son/daughter of) were used, and the name of the farm you lived on was often added as an address. 

For instance: Helgi Eiriksøn (Helgi, son of Eirik), who lived at the farm called Vollr (grass field), would be called Helgi Eiriksøn Vollr. If he moved to the farm called Haugr his name would change to Helgi Eiriksøn Haugr.

Patronyms

Men: Use father's first name and add -sen /-son /-sønn Women: Use father's first name and add -dotter / -dottir / -datter

Farm names

Farm names were usually relevant and derived from either the location, a nearby landmark, nature or from occupation.  I suggest you stick with the modern forms for farm names.

The list of common names for places/villages/towns is still valid, although the spelling is modern. Just keep it simple and make "clever" combos based on meaning.

So Emil Iversen, who showed in January that he's good in freestyle mass starts and sprint wasn't qualified and never had been an option for team sprint, gets to go the 50km race.

While Didrik Tønseth, who is supposed to be the better classic distance skier and was supposed to be no5 in line, doesn't get to race Saturday but was 1st option for 1st leg in relay based on the leg he done last season.

As Hans Christer Holund, who is good in classic and freestyle and who proved in 2 Olympic races that he's in shape, wasn't an option for relay due to lack of experience in relay.

And while we are in this, Anders Gløersen, a medal candidate for 15km F got kicked out of national team after good results last season, and who won a NorgesCup race in December and was faster than Sindre Soar in skiathlon freestyle part, never got to race in Davis and therefore never had a real chance to qualify for Olympics.

While Finn Hågen Krogh qualified for Olympics - but unfortunately Hetland and Nossum, who are always in control, didn't have control about his training in summer and fall and that's why he ended up with only one race.

... obviously they won gold medals and that's a reason to say they did everything right but when coaches make gut decisions, prefer certain skiers and only let past results count for few skiers, it becomes hard to understand Tor Arne Hetland and Vidar Løfshus.

Course Description:

Synchronizations of Senses (SOS), a seminar/workshop/studio/study group/conversation, is a complement to 4.356Cinematic MigrationsLinks to an external site.. This class invites in-depth examination of sense percepts, noting nuances, and articulating specificities. A generative focus is placed on the practices of varied practitioners­–film directors, artists, musicians, composers, architects, designers–whose writings relay a process of thinking and feeling integral to their forms of material production.

Using prompts suggesting varying contexts, such as The Film Sense, written by Sergei Eisenstein, and The Cinema Interval, written by Trinh T. Minh-Ha, in addition to other writings by Eisenstein and Minh-Ha and others, the intention of this course is to create a space for experimentation, exploratory discussion and productions via aesthetic inquiry into perceptions of all senses.

Testing various ways aesthetic forms and their shifts—historic and contemporary—have relations to still emerging contemporary subjectivities (felt emotion in a human body), in this workshop/seminar we will study productions created by participants, case studies of varied producers, and generate new work individually and/or collaboratively via diverse media explorations, which include reading, writing, drawing, and publishing, as well as photographic, cinematic, spatial, and audio operations productions.

The course contents will comprise screenings, listening assignments, and guest visits, in addition to readings, discussions, and presentations. An aim is conviviality, rigor, and engagement fueled by the willingness of the participants to share perceptions and projects. The SOS Documentation Project, produced by the previous participants, is an ongoing accretive node.

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of WordPress 4.9.8.  This maintenance release fixes 46 bugs, enhancements and blessed tasks, including updating the Twenty Seventeen bundled theme.

Following are the highlights of what is now available.

“Try Gutenberg” callout

Most users will now be presented with a notice in their WordPress dashboard. This “Try Gutenberg” is an opportunity for users to use the Gutenberg block editor before it is released in WordPress 5.0.

In WordPress 4.9.8, the callout will be shown to the following users:

If Gutenberg is not installed or activated, the callout will be shown to Admin users on single sites, and Super Admin users on multisites.

If Gutenberg is installed and activated, the callout will be shown to Contributor users and above.

If the Classic Editor plugin is installed and activated, the callout will be hidden for all users.

Privacy fixes/enhancements

This release includes 18 Privacy fixes focused on ensuring consistency and flexibility in the new personal data tools that were added in 4.9.6, including:

The type of request being confirmed is now included in the subject line for all privacy confirmation emails.

Improved consistency with site name being used for privacy emails in multisite.

Pagination for Privacy request admin screens can now be adjusted.

Increased the test coverage for several core privacy functions.
