It would have been a treat to watch Torsten continue to punish the bold for their hubris, but he had invited Freydis to act as something of a teammate to his game. It was one she had not played in some time, but one she still excelled at. Torsten was perhaps the better sportsman, he dropped fragments of wisdom and constructive tips as he fought. Freydis engaged in the scrimmage with the stoicism and silence that likely colored the great legend of Icefang, though quiet was not an accurate depiction of her personality.Â
The first challenger who stepped to Icefang wielded a great, bearded axe. It was clear he was relying on intimidation and sheer force. Freydis allowed him to come, her eyes tracking his every movement, locked in and undaunted. She made no attempt to retreat or dodge, and simply waited until the last possible moment to deflect with Glaceor. The shield and the force she placed behind it harnessed the force of the manâs attack, and she used the leverage to guide Glaceor downward. The axe scraped against the shieldâs surface with a great metallic screech before the edge of it was buried within the dirt between their feet. Freydis, equipped with a practice sword, was not so gentle as Torsten with her rebukesâin Iskaldrik such mercy had needed to be shed given the scrutiny of her gender. The wooden sword hacked at the curve of the manâs neck. In a real battle, he would have severed arteries and choked on his own blood if he had a head left to speak of. Here, he might just struggle to look to the left tomorrow.Â
Another warrior, clearly green but obviously ambitious, ran into the fray with a mace. His predictions were obvious. He knew several moves and little more. Rather than foiling his attack and punishing him for his predictability as Torsten might, she considered it something of a test of agility. His marks were obvious, and she dodged, sidestepped, and leapt over his swings with relative ease. He looked especially disappointed when she pumped over the ridged points of the morningstar. It took only a minute or two for Freydis to see she had exhausted his staminaâhe would be able to battle for longer with practiceâand she charged him with Glaceor out in front of him knocking him to his back when he was too winded to put up much of a fight. She jabbed the pointed end of the practice sword into the soft center of his stomach.Â
From her peripheral vision, Freydis sensed a wisp of movement. This attack, another individual with a sphere, came with no time whatsoever to plan any sort of flourish or show. Reflexively, her hand lifted, her firm grasp jolting the spear to a halfâthe blade missing her temple by mere inches. Her head turned toward the young man yielding it who tried to yank it back from the veil maiden, but had little success in this context of strength. Freydis used Glaceor as a counterweight as she lifted a leg, the back of her calve aligning with the wooden shaft of the spear. Slowly, she applied weight, and it began to bendâif weapons were in such short supply she would have pushed it furtherâwould have snapped it half to give the crown a show. But it wasnât work wasting the weapon and her opponent already understood his defeat within this context. A moment later, she had both feet on the ground and was watching him retreat back to the group.
Freydis looked to Torsten when he offered her water and she pretended not to notice the three young, brash co-conspirators who were about to launch their attack on her. The folly of youthâyoung men always thought they had the jump on her, but she knew their exact marks from three points within the ring. They must have suspected that she would not be able to manage three of them at once when she had the impression that the demonstration was over. From their various points around the sparring ring, they sprinted at her full force, and she simply until they had covered three quarters of the distance before misty-stepping to Torstenâs side. âIâm parched,â she responded coolly, offering Torsten a small, private smile just a fragment of a second before the three young men collided at the center point where she had stood a fraction of a moment ago. âWhere to, then?â
Torsten's movements were absent excess with nothing wasted. Steadfast precision and unyielding precision. Knees, slightly bent, and weight evenly distributed between the balls of his feet to the top of his silver-crowned head. The mithril sword in the prosthesis of his dominant hand gleamed with forged starlight, while the silvered blade in his offhand was duller but no less deadly. Where the warriors of Westreach rushed forward with either fury or desperation, Torsten choreographed his movements to work in tandem with the shieldmaiden fighting at his side. Twin Iskarans both forged from the cold stone of their separate provings.
The first warrior charged, sword raised high in an overhead cut. Predictable. Heavy-handed. Deadly to the untrained. Torsten did not step back. Instead, he pivoted a half-step to the left, the barest adjustment, his mithril blade rising with effortless economy. Not to meet the strike, but to guide it, deflect it, make it useless. As the warriorâs blade slid harmlessly past his shoulder, Torsten turned his wrist, reversing the angle of his sword and bringing its flat against the manâs ribs. Thud. A lesson, not a wound. "A poor warrior fights the opponent they see. A good warrior fights the opponent they expect. A great one fights the opponent as they are, in the moment. Adapt, or die."
His voice was steady, even as the warrior staggered back. "Your strike was committed before your feet left the ground. A death sentence. The moment you think only of attacking, you surrender control."
The next warrior lunged with a spear, its tip darting toward his midsection. A cleverer choice. Reach is an advantage. But reach is only as strong as the foundation behind it. Torsten did not retreat. He advanced. A single step inside the attackâs range, his silver sword flicked forward - not to parry, not to overpower, but to redirect. The spear veered off-course by inches, enough to make it as useless as the last who'd charged him. In a fluid motion, he twisted his wrist and turned his blade to offset the warrior's grip as he twisted the weapon sideways, pulling the warrior off-balance. A quick thrust of his silver pommel into the manâs stomach sent him crumpling to one knee as the spear clattered to his side. "Your weapon is an extension of your center," Torsten murmured as the warrior gasped for breath. "Let an opponent pull you from it, and you will fall."
Torsten did not need to look to know Freydis had things well in hand, back to back in one instance, side by side in another, Torsten caught her eye - something like affection behind the stoic's dark orbs but it was gone as the Kingsguard stayed rooted in the present. He turned his attention to another two warriors, one was the first who'd fallen and now stood to try again - but both circled him now with wary eyes. Good. They were learning.
They attacked in tandem, a flanking maneuver meant to divide his attention. Better. A plan. But the moment before they struck, Torsten saw their tells - the left warrior shifting his weight forward a fraction too soon, the right glancing toward his partner in silent coordination. Anticipation was a weakness if it became predictability and he moved before their weapons could. A half-step to the right, just outside the first warriorâs reach. His mithril sword shot up in a narrow arc, not blocking the attack, but redirecting it - gliding against the bladeâs edge and guiding it off-course with no more effort than a painter brushing a canvas. The silver sword in his offhand darted forward in the same instant, stopping a hairâs breadth from the warriorâs throat.
"Dead," he intoned, voice calm.
The second warrior came from behind, his strike meant to catch Torsten while he was still dealing with the first. A good thought. But Torsten had already begun moving before the blow fell. His footwork was liquid, a turn so effortless it seemed he had anticipated the attack before it had even been conceived. He did not meet the strike. Meeting force with force was a foolâs game. Instead, his mithril blade dipped at the last moment, angling the attack off-course. The warrior overextended - and in that instant, Torstenâs silver sword pressed lightly against his exposed ribs.
"Dead." Torsten let the silence stretch. He sheathed his silver sword first, then his mithril blade, before turning his gaze toward the assembled warriors. "Never fight like you have something to prove. Proving yourself means nothing to the dead.â Torsten sheathed his blades, preaching to the battered warriors of Marinus Bay long enough as most still lay where they'd landed only moments ago - winded.
He turned to Freydis, giving her a knowing nod. "Water?" A rest was warranted - and he'd have words, expecting candidly that she'd wish for the same. It was in her nature but Torsten had grown to enjoy allowing the Jarl to fill the gaps that the witcher's silences left behind.

In the quiet of the night, it was really just the two of them. There weren't any ears listening in on their conversation. No princes or devils around to be a buffer. It was just them here. They had fought together time and time again and it had always felt like that was all they were good for. Njal had been okay with that for a very long time. He had to be. It hadn't been until they got to Lysara that he had even decided to think for himself, where he had decided to let his mind wander to thoughts of life outside of Witcher's Watch. He had no childhood to remember so this was all he had. It had to be okay and he was going to be okay with that information. However, he was far more concerned about where things stood with the two of them. Every time they spoke, it had felt like Torsten was doing that thing he had only seen the Kingsguard do with others. That little judgmental look that he had seen time and time again. He could have just been imagining it, but there were few people he cared about the opinions of. Torsten was at the very top of the list. There was no reason for Njal to ever omit the truth when it came to his best friend.
So, as he sat there in their tent, he leaned an arm across his knee, gaze settling upon the other witcher. He wasn't even sure how to start talking. Torsten was always the silent type. He was used to the quiet with them. Njal felt like this was the first time he didn't really know how to fill that void though. But he'd try. If there was anyone he could talk to, it would be the man next to him. And he hoped the same could be said the other way around. He didn't bother to look at the other for a moment as he finally filled the deadened air. "I haven't been honest with you, Torsten. I've never hidden anything from you before so...I'm sure I didn't need to fucking say anything anyway for you to know that though, huh?"

Sam Feuerbach u.a.: Minen der Macht 04: Der Blutsturm

Sensation and Perception
For us to sense the world around us, our sensory organs receive stimuli. The messages those organs produce go through a process known as transduction. This means that the signals are transformed into impulses that travel through the thalamus to the appropriate cortices. Our bodies are constantly sending signals to the brain, but if it were to register every sensation, it would be overwhelming. Imagine feeling, seeing, hearing, touching, etc.. everything. This doesnât happen due to the combination of sensory adaptation (the decrease in responsiveness to stimuli due to constant stimulation) and sensory habituation (our perception of sensation is partially due to how focused we are on them.) Now that I mention it, you likely will start to feel the socks on your feet, even though you hadnât noticed that before, as you werenât focused on the sensation. This connects to the cocktail-party phenomenon which is the idea that as your focus changes, you ignore certain stimuli, for example, at a party, if youâre focused on your friend talking, and someone yells your name across the room, your focus may involuntarily shift to whoever is yelling at you, causing you not to hear what your friend is saying.
ENERGY SENSES
Vision
Step 1: Gathering Light: Light reflects off of surfaces and hits our eyes. The colour we perceive that surface to depend on a few things; one, the light intensity which is to say, how much energy is in the light that hits the eye. The second is the light wavelength, which determines the hue that we see. (Or if we even see it at all- wavelengths longer than visible light such as infrared waves, microwaves and radio waves or shorter than visible light such as UV waves and X-rays arenât registered by the eye) A mix of all the visible hues of light produces white. When an object appears a certain colour, it has absorbed all other colours and reflected the colour we see it as. A green plant, for example, would not be able to survive in the green light, as it would reflect the green, causing it to starve.Â
Step 2: Within the Eye: Reflected light enters the eye through the cornea which is a clear protective covering over the eye. The light travels through a hole known as the pupil. The iris (what make your eyes a certain colour) is a collection of muscles which work to constrict the pupil in extremely light situations, and expand the pupil in dark places- this is known as accommodation. The curved lens focuses the light like a camera focuses on an image. The image is flipped upside down as it travels through the lens. This now focused, inverted image project itself on the retina which works as a screen. On this screen are specialised neurons which are activated by light.

Step 3: Transduction: The light needs to be translated into neural impulses to be registered by the brain. There are two kinds of neurons which do that job. Cones, which are activated by colour and rods, which respond to black and white. Rods outnumber cones, and are especially useful in dark situations when colour cannot be registered at all; this is why in the dark, it is nearly impossible to figure out what colour an object is. There just isnât enough coloured light being reflected for the cones to be activated properly. Cones are concentrated in the centre of the retina. At the very centre of the retina is the fovea; where the highest concentration of cones exists. Peripheral vision depends on cones, while your centred of vision depends on cones (in light, of course). Once enough rods and cones fire, they activate the next layer of bipolar cells; ganglion cells, whose axons make up the optic nerve, sending impulses to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus. Messages are relayed to the visual cortex in the occipital lobes. The optic nerve has no rods or cones and is known as your blind spot (different to the driving blind spot). There are two parts to the optic nerve. Impulses from the right side of both retinas go to the right hemisphere, while impulses from the left side of both retinas go to the left hemisphere; it is that separation of the optic nerve that allows this to take place. The spot where the optic nerves cross each other is the optic chiasm.
Hereâs a fun experiment to show where the blind spot is. (Here is the original link for anyone curious:Â https://visionaryeyecare.wordpress.com/2008/08/04/eye-test-find-your-blind-spot-in-each-eye/- it has a few more interesting experiments to try as well)
Sit with your nose between the cross and black circle. Cover your left eye, and look at the cross with your right eye. Move towards the computer while still using your right eye. Eventually, the black circle will disappear and reappear, showing you your blind spot. Do the same with your left eye, except now focus on the black circle. Weird right?? (Science rules!)Â
Step 4: In the Brain: There is still a lot of debate as to how our visual cortex actually works to register vision. Some say the visual cortex is where sensation ends and perception begins. Some say interpretation begins at the retina. Some say it begins at the thalamus. Scientists David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel were responsible for finding that groups of neurons in the visual cortex respond to different types of visual images. There are feature detectors for vertical lines, curves, motion, and so on.
Theories of Colour Vision
A lot is still unknown about how we see colour. The oldest theory is the Young-Helmholtz Trichromatic theory which hypothesised that we have 3 different typed of cones which detect, red, blue and green. They are activated in different combinations to produce the spectrum of colour we see. There are issues with this theory; namely afterimages and colour blindness. Thatâs where the opponent-process theory of colour vision comes in. (Not to be confused with the opponent-process theory of emotion. Iâll get to that in a later post). This theory states that sensory receptors are arranged in pairs: red/green, yellow/blue, and black/white. When one sensor is stimulated, its pair is inhibited. This explains after images. Try this illusion out: Stare at this image for 30 seconds, and then look at a white surface. If the flag doesnât immediately show up try blinking a few times.Â
Whatâs happening is that youâve exhausted your cones, and so the opponents will fire. This is why dichromatic colour blindness also tends to be consistent as to which two colours are affected such as red-green colour blindness, or yellow-blue colour blindness
Hearing
While both vision and hearing are considered energy senses, they are very different stimuli. Sound waves are vibrations in the air, instead of electromagnetic waves used to produce images. The vibrations are captured by our ears and transduced into neural impulses which allow the brain to register and interpret the sound. Sound waves have amplitude and frequency. Amplitude is the height of the wave and determines how loud the sound will be. Frequency is the length of the waves and determines the pitch of the sound. High-frequency waves are densely packed together, while low-frequency waves are spaced apart.Â
The process of hearing works much like a Rube Goldberg machine, where one thing moving activates the next part of the sequence. The pinna (outer ear) collects sound, which travels down the auditory canal. The sound reaches the tympanic membrane (the eardrum) which vibrates as sound hits it. Attached to the tympanic membrane are the ossicles; the smallest bones in your body. The tympanic membrane is connected to the hammer/malleus, which is connected to the anvil/incus, which is connected to the stirrup/stapes, which all transmit the vibration to the oval window, a similar membrane to the eardrum. The windows membrane is connected to the cochlea, a snail-like structure filled with perilymph, and endolymph. The vibration of the oval window causes these fluids to move. At the base of the cochlea is the basilar membrane, lined with hair cells connected to the Organ of Corti, which are neurons activated by the moving hair cells. The Organ of Corti fires neural impulses and those impulses travel to the brain via the auditory nerve.

Pitch Theories
Place Theory: Place theory states that hair cells in the cochlea respond to different frequencies based on their location. Some bend to high pitches, and others to low pitches.
Frequency Theory: Research has shown that while place theory is accurate for high pitches, but not for low tones, who are sensed by the rate at which the cells fire. We sense pitch because hair cells fire at different rates (frequencies) in the cochlea.Â
Deafness
For each step in the hearing process, there are just as many ways those steps can go wrong. Conduction deafness refers to a problem conducting sound to the cochlea (so any point in the ear canal, to the eardrum, ossicles, or oval window). Sensorineural deafness occurs when the hair cells in the cochlea are damaged. Often this is caused by overstimulation, causing a high pitched ringing. Prolonged exposure to that much stimulation can severely damage the hair cells which do not regenerate.Â
Touch
There is one more type of energy sense and it is just as different as the other two. Our skin contains millions of different types of receptors. Some (nociceptors) respond to pain, some (thermoreceptors) respond to temperature. Some (Messinerâs Corpuscles) respond to plain old touch. Some (Pacinian Corpuscles) respond to pressure, all of which can be found all over the skin. The relationship between these receptors is not well understood. What we do know is that the brain interprets the amount of indentation (temperature change) and the intensity of touch. Where nerve endings fire also determines where the touch is coming from. Certain parts of our body have more concentrated amounts of receptors.Â
For example, in my physiology class, we did an interesting experiment where a friend took a paper clip and unfolded it until it had 2 ends. The friend would poke me on different parts of my skin with either 1 or 2 of the ends and see if I could guess how many ends I was being poked with. On the fingertip, I guessed with 100% accuracy, while on my shoulder, I was guessing the whole time.Â
Gate-control theory explains how pain is experienced. Some pain messages are more important than others. When a priority message is sent, the âgateâ swings open for it and swings shut for lower priority messages. This is why scratching an itch gets rid of the itch. The scratching is a higher priority message, and so the itch is temporarily ignored in order to prioritise the itching. Thatâs also why you shouldnât scratch an itch- youâre not doing yourself any good. Endorphins also work to shut this gate, working like morphine to shut off any pain.Â
CHEMICAL SENSES
Gustation/Taste
Fun fact before I start: I remember that taste is gestation because of Gusteau from Ratatouille who was named after the French word for taste. When you eat food, the tastebuds are not responding to energy, but rather the chemicals on the tongue. These tastebuds are located on papillae, which are bumps on the tongue. There are 5 different kinds of tastebuds scattered throughout the tongue which respond to Sweet, Salty, Bitter, and Umami (savoury). The more densely packed the taste buds, the more intense the taste is. The tongue is not unique to taste; youâll know this if youâve ever tried to eat a jalapeno because spicy food stimulates nociceptors, which is why the experience is agonising for some people. Weaker nociceptors increase a personâs spice tolerance, which is why certain cultures do better eating spicy foods; theyâve adapted to the pain.
Smell/Olfaction
Olfaction is created by chemicals entering the nose and being absorbed by receptors on the mucous membrane. A lot is not known about these receptor cells- some researchers estimate there are as many as 100 different types. These cells are linked to the olfactory bulb which gathers messages from olfactory receptor cells and relays them to the brain. The nerve fibres from the olfactory bulb connect to the brain differently than all the other senses; instead of going to the thalamus, the message is sent to the amygdala and then the hippocampus. This could be why smells can trigger memories much more strongly than other senses can.
BODY POSITION SENSES
Let's get something out of the way: you do not have 5 senses. How many you have depends on who you ask, but a prominent one is the sense of position.
Vestibular Sense
Your vestibular sense helps you determine where your body is in space. The semicircular canals in the inner ear are responsible for this. The canals are tubes partially filled endolymph. When the head moves, the fluid moves too. The hair cells activate, sending signals to the brain telling it that the head has moved. Dizziness is caused when the brain receives several conflicting signals in a short period of time, caused by rapid movement, or when youâre in a boat, and the eyes register a static view, while the inner ear is registering all kinds of movement.
Kinesthetic Sense
While vestibular sense tracks the overall orientation of the body, kinesthetic sense tracks the position and orientation of specific body parts. Receptors in muscles and joints send information to the brain, helping the brain track the body.
PERCEPTION
Perception is the process of understanding and interpreting sensations. Psychophysics is a branch of psychology which studies the interaction between sensations and how we experience them.
Thresholds
Senses have limits. The absolute threshold is the smallest amount of stimulus we can detect. There are several videos online helping people track the absolute threshold of pitch that they can detect by playing higher and higher frequencies. The proper definition of the absolute threshold is the minimal amount of stimulus we can detect 50% of the time as things such as other sensory inputs can make studying the absolute threshold extremely difficult. Stimuli below the absolute threshold are referred to as subliminal.
Another important threshold is the difference threshold. This is also referred to as the just-noticeable difference and is rather self-explanatory. It is the smallest amount of change in a stimulus needed for us to detect a change. This threshold is determined by Weberâs Law, discovered by psychophysicist Ernst Weber (it is sometimes called the Weber-Fechner law.) The change needed is proportional to the original intensity of the stimulus. The more intense a stimulus, the more it will need to change before we notice a difference. Each sense varies according to a constant (which differs between the senses). The constant for hearing is 5%- when listening to a 50-decibel tone, it would need to reach 52.5 decibels to notice a difference.Â
Perceptual Theories
Signal Detection Theory: This theory investigates the effects of distractions and interference we normally experience in our lives. This area of research revolves around attempting to predict what we will perceive. It takes into account how motivated we are to perceive specific stimuli and our expectation. These are known as response criteria or receiver operating characteristics. A false positive is when we think we are perceiving a non-present stimulus. While a false negative is the failure to perceive a present stimulus.
Top-Down Processing: When we use top-down processing, we perceive by filling in gaps what we sense. For example, when reading this sentence: I _m t_king p_ych_ _ gy, you can pretty easily fill in the blanks based on the context of what you read before, and the letters I did give you. In other words, top-down processing uses background knowledge to fill in gaps. Our schemata are mental representations of how we think the world should be. They can create a perceptual set or a predisposition to experience something a specific way.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bafuyg98no4- Watch this video about backmasking (âhiddenâ messages in songs when played backwards.) Try looking away when the song starts playing and then reading the supposed message. I know personally, when I did this, I couldnât understand the hidden message until I read what I was supposed to be hearing, and then I could hear it clearly. Several parents became worried about this phenomenon, likely because they had schemata of the music their kids were listening to as dangerous.Â
Bottom-Up Processing: This is also known as feature analysis, where only the features of the object are used to build a perception. This is an automatic process, however, is much slower than top-down processing. As a result, it is less prone to error.
Principles of Visual Perception
There are numerous rules for visual perception. One of the first decisions the brain makes is the figure-ground relationship. This is self-explanatory; what is the figure and what is the background? A famous illusion connected to this principle is the vase face illusion. Do you see the background as black or white? Do you see the figure as the vase or the face?Â
Gestalt Rules
Gestalt psychologists at the beginning of the twentieth century noted several principles which explain how we perceive groups of objects, and theorised that we perceive images as groups rather than individuals. (Hence the name âGestaltâ) Here is a great diagram from https://www.verywellmind.com/gestalt-laws-of-perceptual-organization-2795835 illustrating those principles.
Proximity:Â Objects that are close together are more likely to be perceived as a part of the same group
Similarity: Objects that look similar to each other are likely to be perceived as part of one group
Continuity: Objects creating a continuous form are likely to be perceived as part of the same group
Closure: Similar to the sentence connected to top-down processing. Objects making a recognisable image are likely to be viewed as part of the same group
Law of Pragnanz: You are more likely to perceive and interpret complex images as the simplest form possible
Law of Common Region: Objects grouped together within the same region of space tend to be viewed as their own group.
Constancy
Our ability to maintain a constant perception of an object despite a constantly changing world is known as constancy. Here are a few types.
Perceived Motion
Our brains can detect how fast images move across the retinas and use our own motion to determine the speed the object is moving. This causes some interesting phenomena where the brain thinks a still object is moving. For example, you may be familiar with the stroboscopic effect. This is what causes perceived motion in flipbooks. There is also the phi phenomenon. Movie Marquees use this phenomenon by turning on and off lights sequentially, creating the appearance of one moving light.
Depth Cues
Depth perception is what allows us to perceive the world in 3-dimensions rather than 2. Eleanor Gibson performed an interesting experiment known as the visual cliff experiment, which found that crawling toddlers can perceive depth. In this experiment, the infant is placed onto one side of a glass table, creating the appearance of a cliff. The infant would not crawl onto the glass. There are two categories of cues that we use; monocular (needing one eye) and binocular (needing two)
Monocular Cues
Artists tend to use monocular cues to create the illusion of depth in their art. A wonderful artist on deviant art created a really helpful diagram, illustrating each of these ideas. https://www.deviantart.com/akenon/art/Monocular-Cues-34065283

Linear Perspective- In order to draw a faraway house, artists tend to draw two lines which converge at a focal point, taking advantage of the linear perspective cue.Â
Relative Size Cue- When drawing two similarly sized cats, one far away and one nearby, an artist will draw the faraway cat as significantly smaller, creating the illusion of distance.
Interposition Cue- If the artist draws a cat that is partially obscured by a tree, we will view the tree as closer than the cat.
Texture Gradient- Another way artists create the illusion of distance is by making close up objects more detailed than those faraway
Shadowing- By using shading in an image, an artist can imply a light source, further implying depth in the image.Â
Binocular Cues
Binocular Disparity/Retinal Disparity- Each eye sees an object at a slightly different angle. The farther away an object is, the more similarly the eyes will perceive it, the closer it is, the more retinal disparity there will be. Notice in this diagram how the trees donât seem to move, but the finger moves drastically?
Convergence- As an object comes closer to our face, the eyes must move towards each other to keep it in focus. The more the eyes converge, the closet the object is.Â
How Culture Affects Perception
One of the more interesting (in my opinion) parts of psychology is exploring how culture affects us. Some of the perceptual rules that for years psychologists believed to be innate are actually learnt. Cultures which donât use monocular depth cues in their art donât see depth in pictures using these cues. It also affects how optical illusions affect our brains. The famous Muller-Lyer illusion often does not affect cultures that donât use right angles and corners in architecture.Â

Fireworks of blue lightning and gamma rays above thunderclouds
ISS - ASIM Mission patch. 9 April 2019 After only one year in space, the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) on the International Space Station has given researchers a new understanding of how lightning is created, and how thunderstorms can affect the atmosphere and the climate. The first measurements from the facility that is flying 400 km above Earth outside Europeâs Columbus laboratory, reveal how so-called âterrestrial gamma-flashesâ form in the atmosphere. The flashes occur in connection with lightning and thunder storms and are short bursts of high-energy x- and gamma- rays.
Thunderstorm seen from Space Station
Researchers in the science team have also received unprecedented measurements showing a wealth of blue lightning above thunderclouds. The discoveries were published at a European Geosciences Union conference in Vienna today. In following papers this year researchers will describe in more detail how lightning creates terrestrial gamma-flashes, that were first discovered in 1993. âWe are seeing new things and have gained so much knowledge on the internal anatomy of lightning. Besides the terrestrial gamma-flashes our recordings show lots of blue lightning that spread like fireworks above thunderclouds. It looks crazy,â says Torsten Neubert, lead scientist for the ASIM project at DTU Space working with scientists from the University of Bergen, Norway, and the University of Valencia, Spain.
Storm hunter infographics
Great view from space Danish ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen filmed the first blue jets from space showing the lightening firing upwards several times in quick succession. âThe International Space Station is an ideal place to monitor these kind of phenomena as it orbits relatively low over our planet and covers areas where thunderstorms are common,â says ESAâs Astrid Orr, âthe results are exciting as we are learning new things about our planet.â

The search for the magic lightning
The recordings were important â partly because they are the best shots ever taken - partly because they are taken from an angle that makes it easier for researchers to understand what is happening. Andreas comments: âASIM is an excellent example of the exciting and important research we carry out aboard the International Space Station. Research that will contribute with new knowledge about our world. Filming the blue lightning was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my mission in 2015.â Software update for more accuracy - and more For the past six months, Danish company Terma, who heads the technical part of the project, has completed an upgrade of the software that controls ASIMâs two main instruments. The Modular X- and Gamma-ray Sensor is complemented by the Modular Multi-spectral Imaging Array that consists of two cameras and three photometers that detect flashes of light at different wavelengths.
ASIM on Columbus
âThe updates will offer the researchers better measurements, because the instruments have become more sensitive in relation to capturing gamma radiation and gigantic lightning above the clouds. It will also improve the time accuracy between the two instruments to better than ten millionths of a second, which again will improve the analysis of the signals from the many sensors,â says project manager Ole Hartnack from Terma.
ASIM in action
âWe have worked for over 14 years developing and building ASIM â to see results coming in so soon that are beyond expectations is amazing to be a part ofâ says Nikolai Ostgaard, scientist from the University of Bergen. There are larger plans for future of ASIM too, the science team is considering using the observatory to study aurora and meteors over Earth in years to come. Dragon Priest HC II
ie: Rayâs collection of base info for the BASTARD SQUAD (from oldest to youngest)
Ahzidal
Male || 7âČ03âł / 2.21 m || 200 lbs / 90.7 kg Birth Name:  Bonranmirr || 29th of Frostfall, ME -241 || The Tower Lawful Evil || No Original Patron Dragon || Obtained Mask at 201 in ME -40 Questionable Sexuality || Questionable Romantic Inclination 221 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 221 at Death [Killed by Vahlok while trying to flee to warn Miraak that theyâd been discovered]
Squad Dad. Born in Atmora and married young, and moved to Saarthal after traveling overseas from his homeland. Studied under the elves for 15 years, and was the first human to master their magic as well as the magic of man. A nightmarishly talented mage and enchanter, still rivaled by few in 4E 201. Tired and somewhat distant, and had a habit of dad-ing on the younger priests. Not racist towards elves. Never stopped being bitter and hurt over the loss of his wife, Frildal, and his daughter, Thiades, but did not wish genocide on the snow elves. A wonderful mentor to the most magically inclined priests. Â
Ruled over the region of modern-day Winterhold.
Otar [Mulaag]
Male || 7âČ05âł / 2.26 m || 182 lbs / 82.6 kg Birth Name: Otar || 8th of Sunâs Dawn, ME -92 || The Lover Chaotic Evil ||  Vikvothvzin [Wyrm] || Obtained Mask at 30 in ME - 62 Heterosexual || Heteroromantic 72 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 78 at Death [Imprisoned by Torsten and Saerek in his temple]
Originally a very honored and renounced warrior, and well respected king. Was not a priest before obtaining his mask, and became a priest due to his status and how beloved he was by his people. Was very level-headed and reasonable through most of his life, though by the time he reached 60 his mental health started to decline. Sort of went off the deep end and was largely just a grumpy, crazy old man by the end of the cult. Some sort of outside influence seems to be the cause, but nobody is quite sure what. Most priests had enough respect based off of how he had been to keep him around, but also just sort of ignored his mad ramblings. His mask name was Mulaag, but as he grew older he apparently forgot it, leading to everyone just calling him âOtar, the Madâ.
Ruled over the region of modern-day Markarth as far as the northern river border (Druadach Redoubt) and as far south as the riverâs south most end (Old Hroldan)
Konahrik
Male || 6âČ10âł / 2.08 m || 215 lbs / 97.5 kg Birth Name: Bormim || 10th of Last Seed, ME - 82 || The Warrior Lawful Evil ||  Paarlostnok [Storm Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 23 in ME -59. Became head priest at 39 in ME -43. Asexual || Demiromantic 62 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 67 at Death [Killed in the siege on Bromjunaar during the Dragon War. Body was destroyed]
A super strict traditionalist. Known to be a talented warrior and a brilliant tactician, earning him respect of his fellow soldiers before he worked on ascending to priesthood. Headstrong and a natural-born leader, making him the obvious pick to replace the previous leader, Sot. Popular among the older priests, and much less popular among the younger ones because of his strict traditional views. Very distant as a individual and very uninterested in making personal relationships with others, which was often a teasing point by the younger priests. Very focused on what would be best for the cult.
Ruled over Bromjunaar and the very immediate surrounding territory, as well as the Throat of the World and t he very surrounding territory.
Morokei
Male || 6âČ04âł / 1.93 m || 122 lbs / 55.3 kg Birth Name: Heksirr || 29th of Rainâs Hand, ME -66 || The Mage Lawful Evil ||  Kunsusaan [Arctic Dragon] || Obtained Mask at  20 in ME -46 Demisexual || Demiromantic 46 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 51 at Death [Killed in the siege on Bromjunaar during the Dragon War. Buried in the Labyrinthian]
A very talented mage from a high-ranking priest family. Trained from his early childhood to harness his magic, and followed in the footsteps of the rest of his family in becoming a priest. Studied under Ahzidal, and was a very aggressive rival of Miraakâs. A close friend of Konahrikâs, and one of the few who knew about or was allowed to access the Eye of Magnus when it was discovered under Bromjunaar. Well respected among the priests, and was always out to improve himself and rise above his family members - and above Miraak. Often competed for Ahzidalâs favoritism, and was furious that Miraak got it.
Ruled over modern-day Whiterun to the east river and to Robberâs Gorge and the northern mountain range with Eldersblood Peak.
Rahgot
Male || 6âČ11âł / 2.11 m || 247 lbs / 112.0 kg Birth Name: Mogneir || 19th of Last Seed, ME -65 || The Warrior Neutral Evil ||  No Original Patron Dragon || Obtained Mask at 26 in ME -39 Heterosexual || Heteroromantic 45 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 204 at Death [Committed suicide via poison at Skorm Snow-Striderâs siege on Forelhost]
Rahgot spent most of his youth as a soldier. He was renowned for his skills on the battlefield, and was awarded a seat amongst the priests for his heroism. He wasnât at all skilled in magic, but most certainly was the most skilled in physical combat of the last priests. Well known for having a very short fuse and for being quick to lash out, and known for striking anyone who displeased him - especially subordinates. Always was eager for aggressive plans, and usually agreed and sided with Otar and Konahrik on matters. Distrusted Ahzidal and Miraak particularly, and only trusted Morokei because he tended to side with Rahgotâs allies. Almost always shouted. One of the few priests who were married and had children - though his wife was deceased by the time he reached priesthood, and he wasnât at all affectionate towards his children.
Ruled over modern-day Riften, excluding the eastern mountain range.
Dukaan [Okaaz]
Male || 6âČ05âł / 1.96 m || 193 lbs / 87.5 kg Birth Name: Gol || 20th of Evening Star, ME -63 || The Thief True Neutral ||  Dokoorreyth [Ancient Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 27 in ME -36, renamed at 33 in ME -30 Heterosexual || Heteroromantic 43 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 43 at Death [Killed by Vahlok at Miraakâs temple while trying to defend it]
Dukaan spent his youth at sea on a fishing vessel owned by his father, though he would eventually turn to serving the temple after losing vision in his right eye in an accident. He was well respected amongst the masked priests until Dukaanâs refusal to sacrifice a innocent earned him the scorn of his patron dragon, Dokoorreyth. He was dropped to the bottom of the priest hierarchy and had his name changed to âDukaanâ as punishment; something Dukaan never let down. The priests tended to ignore him after that, causing him to turn to Ahzidal and Miraakâs cause when he discovered it. He sought to see the dragons pay for, ultimately, for their unfair and cruel dictatorship. Â
Ruled over the mouth of the river that runs through Windhelm and a stretch of land that has since sunk into the sea north east of Windhelm.
Miraak
Male || 6âČ09âł / 2.06 m || 224 lbs / 101.6 kg Birth Name: Vyr || Unknown, ME -60 || Unknown Lawful Evil ||  Zokgaaftu [Tempest Drake] || Obtained Mask at 18 in ME -42 Bisexual || Demiromantic 40 at his Betrayal || N/A
Miraak was found as a baby amidst the ruins of a burned village, the single survivor of the small settlement. He shifted âfosterâ parents through the temple a few times before being left as a orphan until the age of 13, when he accidentally absorbed the soul of his villageâs slain dragon patron. He was spared from sacrifice by Alduin himself, and was then taken in by the priests. He studied under Ahzidal, and was the youngest to be granted a position amongst the masked priests. He was a devout servant of the dragons until 26, when he first encountered Hermaeus Mora with Ahzidal. He was popular among the younger priests, though Otar and Rahgot never trusted him. His betrayal left deep resentment among the priests.
Was romantically involved with Krosis [Nonvul] for 7 years, which ended due to Miraakâs increasing seclusion in the years leading up to his betrayal of the cult and because of Zahkriisosâs interest in Miraak. Zahkriisos was interested in him, and while he didnât turn her away, he did not share the same feelings. Had a fling or two with Hevnoraak.
Ruled over modern-day Solstheim, and is the cause of it being an island.
Nahkriin
Male || 6âČ06âł / 1.98 m || 235 lbs / 106.6 kg Birth Name: Skorreth || 2nd of Sunâs Height, ME -58 || The Apprentice Lawful Evil ||  Odstrunriik [Storm Dragon] ||  Obtained Mask at 25 in ME -33 Asexual || Aromantic 38 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 38 at Death [Sealed self in Skuldaafn for Alduinâs return after Alduinâs disappearance]
Nahkriin developed a bitter hatred for humans at a young age, between the treatment of his family by other townsfolk and his familyâs ultimate death at the hands of bandits. He joined the temple explicitly to serve the dragons, and became well known for his absolute disdain and merciless attitude towards other people. He never visited other priests on his own, and was only seen in Skuldaafn or at meetings. He made his best effort to interact as little as possible with other humans. He generally disliked all the priests, but habitually sided with the older priests simply because their interests aligned most often with the dragonâs.
Ruled over the chain of mountains that make up Skyrimâs modern-day east border, and varying amounts of land on either side - including the basin around Bonestrewn Crest on the east side of the river fork.
Hevnoraak
Male || 6âČ05âł / 1.96 m || 162 lbs / 73.5 kg Birth Name: Matminald || 26th of Midyear, ME -55 || The Steed Chaotic Evil ||  Drundurdwiin [Nether Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 24 in ME -31 Bisexual || Aromantic 35 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 45 at Death [Drained his blood and sealed himself in Valthume to ascend to lichdom]
Hevnoraak was the only son of a very poor farming family. His mother passed early in his life, and he took to caring for his younger sisters. Known for causing trouble and lashing out, he was kicked out at 16, leaving him to fend for himself. He returned at his fatherâs death to save his sisters from debt collectors, leading to the death of his siblings and the collectors. Hevnoraak spent the next several years as a slave to the temple, during which he discovered his capacity to bend people to his will. He honed this and rapidly manipulated his way to a position in the masked council, killing one of the priests and ensuring that he was the one picked. Few priests trusted him, though he is unable to mind control any of the masked priests without help, but he became the backbone of the younger priestâs circle. Most priests kept Hevnoraak at armâs length, fully aware of his severely sadistic and cruel nature, but he was not without his upsides. Hevnoraak was the most likely to snap back at Konahrik, and was often the one the other younger priests hid behind when it came to breaking Konahrikâs rules and traditions. If anyone was going to host a party or a leisurely gathering, it was him.
Had a fling or two with Miraak, and had flings with Vokun.
Ruled over modern-day Falkreath and up to his temple at Valthume.
Vokun
Male || 6âČ08âł / 2.03 m || 251 lbs / 113.9 kg Birth Name: Hilgaar || 30th of First Seed, ME -54 || The Lord Neutral Evil ||  Ereivurkrent [Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 25 in ME -29 Homosexual || Homoromantic 34 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 53 at Death [Killed by soldiers seeking to destroy the remains of the cult]
Vokun joined the cult young, a quiet servant who was rarely noticed. He became a important asset to his patron dragon and some of the higher priests because of how often he was ignored - he became very good at collecting information under otherâs noses. This, ultimately, almost lead to his death. The discovery of another priestâs plans against the temple was brought to his attention, and ultimately Vokunâs involvement with its discovery caused the priest in question to attack him. Vokun nearly died and lost his right eye, but his devotion and skills were brought to light with the rest of the cult. This earned him a place among the priests, where he quickly settled into the background with the younger priests. He was not always thrilled to be breaking rules or going along with Hevnoraakâs shenanigans, but his voice was very frequently talked over. That said, he was often the voice of reason for the younger priests, and one of the few that could calm Hevnoraak without penalty.
Had flings with Hevnoraak and Krosis [Nonvul].
Ruled over modern-day Dawnstar and the marshland of Morthal to the river.
Zahkriisos
Female || 6âČ02âł / 1.88 m || 162 lbs / 73.41 kg Birth Name: Sval || 24th of Hearthfire, ME -54 || The Lady Lawful Evil ||  Mahkofus [Frost Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 25 in ME -29 Bisexual || Heteroromantic 34 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 34 at Death [Died protected Miraakâs temple]
Zahkrissos descended from a member of the 500 Companions, and had taken to the call of keeping Skyrimâs lands clear of Snow Elves. A talented warrior, she gained her position in the council after rampaging with a band of warriors across the countryside to clear lingering hoards of Snow Elves from Atmoran-controlled territory. She quickly became popular in the council, and was very outspoken. While she tended to agree with the older members, she most often sided with the others her age. She taught Miraak how to use the blade, and forced her way into their pact with Mora in search of power. She was often too happy to go along with Hevnoraakâs horrible plans, and was a little too straight forward in her desires for some of the other priests.
Had flings with Volsung, but was romantically interested in Miraak - though Miraak did not share the feelings. She did not reciprocate Volsungâs feelings towards her.
Ruled over a now-gone stretch of land that connected Solstheim to the mainland, before Miraak sundered and let the sea reclaim it in his fight with Vahlok.
Volsung
Female || 29 || 6âČ00âł / 1.83 m || 189 lbs / 85.8 kg Birth Name: Hiajifildr || 19th of Last Seed, ME -49 || The Warrior Neutral Evil ||  Draalliivgraag [Magma Dragon] || Obtained Mask at 22 in ME -27 Homosexual || Homoromantic 29 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 84 at Death [Dies protecting Volskygge from those seeking to remove the remains of the Dragon Cult]
Volsung was handed to the temple after showing astonishing magical prowess, and was mostly raised and tutored under the priests. She studied under Ahzidal as well, and took a shining to Miraak. Her and Hevnoraak particularly butted heads as Volsung was one of the few people who wouldnât deal with his shit, but they were very frequently caught hanging around each other. She was second behind Miraak on Rahgot and Otarâs list of most hated priests, and she made it a point of proving herself to the others for what limited time there was before Miraakâs betrayal and the hard change in atmosphere.
Had flings with and feelings for Zahkriisos, but Zahkriisos did not reciprocate them.
Ruled over modern-day Solitude, the portion of modern-day Markarth north of the river, and the eastern most part of modern-day Morthal.
Krosis [Nonvul]
Male || 6âČ04âł / 1.93 m || 152 lbs / 68.9 kg Birth Name: Gyrrunmomth || 20th of Frostfall, ME -49 || The Tower Lawful Neutral || Gruthrathlir || Obtained Mask at 19 in ME -30, was renamed at 31 in ME -18 Bisexual || Biromantic 29 at Miraakâs Betrayal || 47 at Death [Dies protecting his followers while fleeing those hunting the Dragon Cult - his sarcophagus is dropped and abandoned on the top of Shearpoint instead of being buried]
Krosis ascended the ranks of the cult rapidly, deeply devoted to the religion and to his people. He was rather favored by his dragon patron, who even recommended him when the masked council sought a new member. Many of the priests saw him as too gentle and good-natured. He had a genuine interest in peopleâs well being and the relationship between man and dragons, and was too cheerful for some of the priests. He was a favorite for heckling by the younger priests, as far as Miraak would allow it. He was close to many of the younger priests anyways, and was often a voice of reason with Vokun. He was renamed from Nonvul to Krosis after his spiral of depression following Miraakâs betrayal.
Was romantically involved with Miraak for 7 years, until Miraakâs decreasing contact with him and Miraak did not turn away Zahkriisosâs very obvious advances. He had flings with Vokun after.
Ruled over the area south west of modern-day Windhelm, from Korvanjund in the west and the riverâs border in the east, to the edge of the mountain range that contains the Throat of the World.

In theory, Afshin probably should have thought twice about this given the situation they were in. Well, actually, it wasn't the situation as much as it was the location. Torsten was probably more than used to this given where he had grown up, but the prince absolutely was not. Where he laid his head at night had never been less than comfortable. This was not one of those places, but here he was. He was still here with Torsten, their hips meeting with every thrust in a bed that was probably hanging on by a thread. But it wasn't like he was going to suddenly be uninterested because of the room they were in. No, he probably would've made this same decision if there were no bed at all.
There was now somehow distance between them and no distance at all at the same time as Torsten lifted himself up. Afshin really couldn't even thinking properly right now even with the demand being asked of him. He'd had enough determination to ask for his own plea, but he feared that was all he had left. "If you did, I'd never forgive you." He would, but it wasn't like he was bound to tell the truth.
If he was capable, he probably would've gave some sort of sarcastic comment. However, he was far too focused on the feeling of Torsten inside of him that he didn't have the willpower to say no. His thumb slipped past his Kingsguard's lips while his other hand moved between them. "Since you asked so nicely." He gripped himself between non-calloused fingers and kept a steady up and down motion. His hips met Torsten's thrust for thrust as he tried to pull the other down with the one hand that wasn't currently occupied. "Please don't stop."
Luxury was foreign to Torsten at this point, even as a Kingsgaurd he slept in the barracks and hadn't known much more than a cot that barely went the width of his shoulders since he was a boy. There was something unsightly about seeing the King splayed across a mattress below his station, unsightly and enticing all at once. Afshin could have refused him but instead, he allowed himself to be fucked into a weathered old bed in a room that hadn't known a good year for decades.
Torsten righted himself, his hand removed from Afshin's neck in favor of taking an iron grip on the King's thigh. "Shall I finish without you?" Torsten asked, tone severe, despite the humor underneath it; Afshin had relented a great deal already, he could give the other this much. The racking against the wall remained a constant, Torsten's thighs tensing and relaxing with every drive of his hips.
Torsten's hand abandoned Afshin's thigh and closed over his hand instead, "Please-" he spoke into the dark of Afshin's palm, against the ring that he'd bestowed upon him; Torsten's lips followed where his breath whispered against the King's unmarred skin. "Please." He said again, pulling Afshin's thumb passed his lips and across his tongue. "Please show me how my King pleasures himself."

Braydon Manu: German-born Ghana star steering SV Darmstadt 98 into Bundesliga promotion
Ghanaian midfielder Braydon Manu is steering SV Darmstadt 98 promotion into the German Bundesliga with scintillating and eye-popping performances. The 25-year-old has been a key cog of the Bundesliga 2 side this season as they lie second on the table behind Schalke 04.The Ghana midfielder scored for Darmstadt in their 6-0 win against Aue in the Bundesliga II on Sunday. It was the fourth goal of the season for the Ghana international in 19 appearances after being named in the Kicker's Bundesliga II team of the week.Manu's exceptional form has established him as one of the hugely talented players in the German second-tier as they inch closer to the Bundesliga.Darmstadt 98 has promotion to the Bundesliga in their own hands with two matches left to spare.
With three goals and three assists as well as many good performances, Manu has been a mainstay of the Darmstadt's rise this season.
Manager Torsten Lieberknecht has hailed the impact of the Ghanaian in his side's promotion drive this term.Braydon brings an incredible heart. Sometimes it's not what the coach says. But sometimes it helps." he said. The Ghanaian has spoken highly on the coach, who has allowed him to operate freelyHe lets me be who I am.That's probably the key for me," Manu told the "FAZ".The offensive man describes himself as a "surprise package" because of his often unpredictable style of play and thus fits perfectly into a team that is unexpectedly on the rise.   source: https://ghanasoccernet.com/
