PSP Reassures Prompt Collection of Waste

The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAM) otherwise known as the PSPs have conducted elections into her Executive Committee. The nee EXCO of the Association was inaugurated recently.
The new chairman Mr. David Oriyomi in his speech promised to on behalf of his colleagues to work harder in ensuring a cleaner environment in Lagos state. He assured Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the entire good people of Lagos of prompt and effective waste collection. He commended the Governor for reappointing Barrister Tunji Bello as the Hon. Commissioner for the Environment, he said Mr. Bello is a tested and trusted hand when it comes to Environmental management.
He said the Association is partnering with other key stakeholders especially the financial institutions, who are expected to provide adequate funding to members for capacity development.
Oriyomi therefore charge all members of the Association to be United and work assiduously to keep Lagos clean.
Mr. Olugbenga Adebola who is the Spokesperson of the Association as well as a waste and environmental management consultant said the Association is being repositioned to actualise the vision of Governor and his team. He noted that Association is poised to change the face of the state by evacuating all the waste backlogs and blackspots in the state.
He stated that now is the time for all stakeholders to think out of the box by seeing waste as a resource. He declared that waste is not a waste unless it is wasted. He further stated that the Association is working with Governor to ensure that all the waste generated in Lagos state are sorted from the household level to promote waste recovery, recycling and conversion.
Adebola stated that very soon, the state government through LAWMA and the PSPs will soon commence the distribution of colour coded waste bags to residents of the state to encourage source segregation of waste.
"Though there is currently a huge challenge at the disposal end which is impacting negative on the efficiency of Operators, but the state government has promised to invest more on disposal sites rehabilitation to increase the turnaround time of the PSP trucks which will bring about effective and efficient service delivery.
He stated that the PSPs are committed to investing massively into the industry to ensure that Lagos is returned back to those glorious days when the state received several awards as one of the cleanest state in Africa.
He noted that the state became a reference point for best practice in waste management in Nigeria and the entire continent, so much that the PSP programme which is a micro/small/medium enterprises model was replicated by several states in the country and other African countries.
The Managing Director of LAWMA Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin who represented by LAWMA's Executive Director Mr. Ibraheem Odunboni stated that LAWMA will sustain the partnership with the private sector to keep Lagos clean. He urged everyone present at the occasion to pledge to work together to keep Lagos clean.
