totalityandopacity replied to your post: frost & bonfire!!!
i had no idea u were a math minor but it explains so much about ur Badiou love lmfao
Yeah, it was partially because I had a math major roommate that made a lot of the math stuff seem cool. I had taken trig/pre-calc four different times (due to shenanigans), so I felt I was pretty done with math. But on his influence, I took a calculus class finally and realized that I actually really like math.
Now I’m at a really awkward place, where the next step in math would be one where I’d really benefit from some kind of instruction (Analysis and Abstract Algebra), but I’m not in a program anymore.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

this is honestl why i only post about my research now because it is so fucking exhausting handling Precisely This every time i try to talk about my experiences w gender and mental illness and race on this site
it honestly just goes to show that no matter how approachable you try to keep your language and how little jargon you use you’re always going to be accused of being incomprehensible if people don’t like what you’re saying, lmao

@totalityandopacity i made the post to contrast the Straight way from the way that feels natural to me, which is just saying someones pretty lol. also changing the direction of the impression; a straight girl would say “i love your hair”, a gay girl would say “your hairs so pretty”. also complimenting actual features of the body, like her eyes, rather than fashion / stylistic choices, is a good way to go imo ? the “i love your hair” implies that youre impressed by what they did with it, but “your hairs so pretty” is identifying a love for the hair itself.

totalityandopacity replied to your photo “Arun Saldanha - Space After Deleuze”
& like what's worse is that i have spent so much of my life studying it (well, the better part of the last five years at least) that i understand the jargon, but that actually makes it more frustrating
totalityandopacity replied to your photo “Arun Saldanha - Space After Deleuze”
everything after "stratoanalysis" is a jargon-filled mess of the highest order
totalityandopacity replied to your photo “Arun Saldanha - Space After Deleuze”
honestly this is the kinda stuff that made me stop focusing on D&G
@totalityandopacity I tried replying to this hours ago, but the app kept crashing on me because this site is trash. So sorry about that.
I agree, that was a bit much. I was mostly posting that out of joy of at least - at last! - getting some kind of example or demonstration of what was being talked about.
I don’t think the use of jargon is necessarily bad (nor do I think you’re saying that, but any discussion of jargon on this hellsite has to be clear about that), but it entirely overwrought in works dealing with Deleuze. I mean, I think that’s why I was never able to make it through someone like Negarestani, even if theyre work seemed potentially useful (or at least fun).
A lot of the conceptual distinctions Deleuze makes seem to be useful, potentially, but that usefulness gets lost in the fetishized use of the terms in the secondary literature. And largely, I’m seeing Deleuze as being really useful for thinking through a lot of problems in the philosophy of science: I don’t know how useful he is in terms of thinking through a politics (especially when, like, Marxism exists) nor do I know if I want to spend the time trying to figure that out.
This is part of why I like DeLanda, honestly, despite all of his problems. He’s fairly good at being like “Here’s the term Deleuze uses, here’s what I’m choosing to use, and here’s some stuff that goes along with that idea, along with some stuff of how it might be useful”. I have seen few other scholars put as much effort in trying to mobilize Deleuze’s concepts.
But yeah, I had a really interesting conversation with someone in my department the other day that studies a lot of Frankfurt School stuff. And I mentioned something about, like, being 99% on board with a lot of Marxist theory stuff, but having some conceptual hangups along with some kind of weird devotion to post-structuralism. And she said she used to be in the same position - she spent five years or so as a committed Derridean - and she understood the need to “pass through all that” to get at a more Marxist conception of things. (And she said it in a very encouraging and not condescending way, though that’s how my quote makes it sound there). And that’s kind of how I’m feeling about a lot of this now: I need to work through my own problems with it, and disentangle myself a lot, before I can probably just get along with Marxism comfortably, lmao.
(And Levinas. Always Levinas.)
