The things they carried were heavy and I’m borrowing from Tim O’Brien ‘cause I’ve never been there. The things they carried were heavy, and they carried them through days and nights and into Night. They carry them still as scars from the shrapnel and the bullet wounds, and the burden of living after all that, the burden of living when their brothers did not. They get the distinction of the greatest generation, some of them, while others fought in conflicts less important to the American psyche.

And all these things and more, all these things and more are carried by them to the post office, to the church, to the DMV, to the school play and the assembly in their honor, to the grocery store where a scruffy-looking millennial will ring up a laundry list of ham and eggs, milk, some soda, the turkey that is on sale for 69¢/lb. after you buy $25 of stuff.

Then the millennial will ask them “Do you happen to be a veteran?” before scanning a coupon with his gun to take an extra 10% off, as if this were a great reward for the things they did, for the things they lost to the fires of the theater of war. And some will say thank you and have a nice day, and some of the millennials will inquire “what branch?” or tack on a “thank you for your service.”

But one man will tell the millennial, two years from joining the service himself, that “Today is not about me. Today is about those that didn’t make it back,” and the millennial will stupidly say “I understand that.”

But he doesn’t, because he can’t. He’s lost people and he’s written about it for years, about the boy with the gun in the room, alone, the scar on that boy’s head, the spirals, but he’s never had them ripped from his hands, from his sight, he’s never sat there and watched them get zapped while zipping.

He’s carried some things now for a matter of time, the cursed man in his head feeding him lies, the pendulum of his mind swinging like a dancer… But the things he carries are not the things they carry. He knows this

and the man who came through his line with flowers, eyes a bit puffy, whether it was the air or globes astream with cold, he wonders old if they are for his wife or his brothers.
