The most famous #ToyotaSupra today is the 1990s-era A80, with it’s swoopy styling, extreme speed, and giant hoop spoiler. But in the model’s first two iterations it was a more humble machine - still the “Celica Supra.” The original A40 #CelicaSupra was a pretty straightforward stretch of the A40 #Celica, styled in the U.S. by David Stollery at Toyota’s California studio. 5 inches in length added ahead of the A-pillar made way for Toyota’s M-series six, in 2.0, 2.6, and 2.8 liter forms. Aimed at the Datsun 280ZX, the original, called the Celica XX in #Japan, was a nice car, but more of a tourer than a sports car. It never quite caught the imagination the way the Z had - and gave way to the more angular #A60 in late 1981. There was considerably more differentiation from the Celica in the new car, and it was a faster car right out of the gate - and it was slicker than the now-aging 280ZX. This Supra appealed in two directions - the Performance “P-type” and, in the vein of the original, the Luxury-themed “L-type.” Over the car’s life, it got faster and the spec got more standardized, with the L-type fading against the flared, wider-tired P-type, with the P being the only model for 1986, by which time the #Supra was going in its own direction, while the Celica was going front-drive. The A70 Supra, on its own dedicated platform for the first time (a choice that reflected the success of the wedge-shaped A60 series), debuted in mid-'86. The P-type cars, today the more sought after versions, looked the part of a sporty GT, with 7" wide wheels and butch fender flares to match, and an assortment of spoilers - touches that with it's speed and reliability made it hard to beat. It came only with a straight six, but offered Mustang and Firebird speed in a more reliable and luxurious package.
