#my art#another code#trace memory#another code recollection#hotel dusk#I mixed designs for it cause I like Ashley's new look but I like the DAS being a DS more than a switch#hotel dusk is off a noir type movie poster#and another code is like a detective mystery one

Another Code Collection?!
So this Nintendo direct was a pretty good one. But what really put it over the edge for me and had my jaw on the floor was a remade collection of the long buried Nintendo series: Another Code. Or Trace Memory if you grew up in NA.

Now this game came out on the early days of the DS. And like a lot of games on that system, it was an interactive mystery novel with puzzle solving elements. Games like Ace Attorney and Professor Layton thriving at the time.
Another Code was Nintendo’s attempt at this with the help of developer Cing. Cing would go onto to do the famous Hotel Dusk game and even getting sequels to both Another Code and Hotel Dusk. Another Code’s sequel was always out of reach for me as I didn’t have a PAL Wii. Not helped by the fact that Cing went out of business. Basically leaving Another Code in the Nintendo vault without a developer.
So to see it come back and looking this good is one thing.

But that it would be a collection with the Wii game that never came to North America

My heart practically stopped.
I am so excited for this game. I keep hearing the switch will probably get replaced, but with this on the way out I’m just floored. And mind you same direct had Thousand Year Door remaster announced.
So yeah I’m excited and if any of this has interested you. I recommend picking it up.

I'm genuinely not sure if i could fully convey how excited I am. This may genuinely be the most ive ever popped off at a Nintendo Direct
Not only are these two obscure-but-beloved games from the Nintendo vault back but the facelift on the first game especially is drop-dead gorgeous. The Another Code duology is immensely important to me and directly connected to the far more well known Kyle Hyde games - Hotel Dusk and Last Window - made by the now defunct CiNG. Nintendo had 0 involvement in these games beyond publishing and they made note of their poor sales back in the day - yet they're back!!!!!! More beautiful than ever!!!!

i love the stark difference between D's Recollection sprite/3d model vs. his original 2d one:

a very blue but polite young boy vs. guy who is both haunting and is haunted (by things he cannot remember)
#trace memory#another code#another code recollection#rey rambles#to be clear i love them both#but D's original sprite will always have a special place in my heart#(because his literal dead stare unsettled me as a child)#and also because he feels more like a ghost

How Another Code: Recollection rewrote its villain in an empathetic way

Content warning: Discussions of topics including conversion therapy, death, familial abuse, and ableism
Major spoilers for all of the games in the Another Code series
When I began playing Another Code: Recollection (2024)earlier this year, I knew the game would diverge from its source materials. The original Another Code games were developed for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii systems, so major changes were needed to reconfigure the puzzles originally designed for dual screens and motion controls. Even with these gameplay changes, the narrative of Recollection was nearly identical to my memories of the original DS game, offering a fresh perspective, and modern polish, on a beloved childhood classic. The adaptation of its sequel for the Wii was also a delight, providing me with the opportunity to finally experience a story that was never localized for North American audiences.
However, I was unaware that while Recollection is structurally very similar to the original games, the sequel game’s narrative received a major overhaul. Various story beats and character motivations have been changed, rearranged, or outright omitted, with some elements and characters reframed and reimagined. Among these changes, the most personally striking was the radical difference in one character: Ryan Gray, a neurodivergent-coded antagonist originally presented as an unambiguous villain, but reinvented as a nuanced, sympathetic figure in the remake.
