This week is Fashion Revolution week: a week in which we look back at 2013 and set new goals for the fashion industry. Today 7 years ago the fourth largest industrial disaster in history took place in Bangladesh. The Rana Plaza building, in which around 5000 people were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands, collapsed. These numbers are hard to fathom but it’s compatible to the amount of people on TWO Boeing 747 or an entire high school. It’s time to stop ignoring and start doing. We are never going to stop buying clothing but the best thing you can do is do a bit of research, ask who made your clothing and support brands who are fighting for a more #sustainable and #ranaplaza ethical fashion industry. I know we can do better 💚💚💚 #Repost @fash_rev ・・・ No one should die for fashion. But five years today, 24 April 2013, the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh collapsed. 1,138 people died and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. There were five garment factories in Rana Plaza all manufacturing clothing for big global brands. The victims were mostly young women. Earlier that morning, workers were threatened with loss of their monthly pay if they did not proceed into Rana Plaza to work. Despite the cracks being identified the day before and their requests to not return to the factory floors, without any form of union representation they had no collective strength to stand up for themselves. There were 29 brands identified in the rubble. It would take years for some of them to pay compensation. For some families, providing DNA evidence to claim that compensation, would never be possible. To this day a high percentage of survivors are unemployed and suffer from severe trauma. Today is the reason we need a Fashion Revolution. Today we think of the true cost of our clothing. The hands that make our garments and the families they belong to and the stories that they carry. Fashion Film Workshop

The year of 2018 was the year for change. Communities and Activist groups finally got their voices heard and eventually, plans got put into motion. We carried out an initial research task looking into how these actions initially begun.

1. Initiatives that are inspirational and effective: 

 The HeForShe campaign is a campaign for the advancement of gender equality, formed by the UN, it’s unbelievable that still males and females in the same working position still get paid different wages. The movement’s goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to partake as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes and behaviours.

“OUR CAMPAIGN SEEKS TO CHALLENGE THE NEGATIVE RHETORIC AGAINST IMMIGRANTS, CELEBRATE THEM AND PROVIDE THEM WITH A PLATFORM TO SHARE THEIR STORY.“
