My handmade Genesee County Longbow. Designed in the tradition of #HowardHill and the classic simplicity of 20th century American-style fiberglass laminated longbows. Mine measures 68" in length and draws right at 55lbs. Made entirely from live-edge and rough sawn woods sourced from trees grown right here in Genesee County. Knotted black walnut hand-tapered to make the limbs, reinforced with white oak heartwood to give them strength and stability and a riser made of figured butternut sapwood. Sit #10 was eventful from the beginning. Not long after getting settled, 3 does were in the field feeding. They worked closer to me, but not close enough. They fed back into the woods. A few minutes later I see a herd running towards me from 400 yards away, a small 8 point is chasing does, right towards me! They settle and feed around, maybe to within 40 yards, no shot. They disperse over a short period of time out into the field. Not much later 4 more does come into view from the woods. Emerging like the ghosts in Field of Dreams from the corn. Two of the bigger does feed right towards me but the lead doe catches me repositioning for a shot. She and a partner are at high alert, but stomp their way past a shooting lane at less than 20 yards! I manage to get my bow up and to full draw, slowly, smoothly, pointed right at the second doe in the line. The arrow is away and is perfect…I thought I even saw the arrow enter her side as she spun in a flurry. She ran maybe 20 yards and stopped and stared in my direction, snorting, for the next 5 minutes. No sign of being hit in any way. Eventually they move off…I was expecting her to wobble and fall over in those 5 minutes! All of the does eventually settle, trot off, and begin feeding again. I found the arrow…zero sign of hitting a deer. Zero. I missed. Luckily a complete miss. Still not sure how I missed…but guessing she simply spun out of the way. This is the 63rd or 64th autumn for my old Bear Kodiak. But, this is the first time it’s ever had a beaver tail leather grip and moose antler tips. Sacrilege I realize…but it’s my bow, so purists are just going to have to deal with it. And also some new “retro” arrows from @stumpstalker that are flying like the darts they are. The nights are almost cool enough now to deal with hanging venison.
