DM Tales from the Yawning Portal: Christmas Special: How the Gre’nich Stole Midwinter

Okay so this one shot wasn’t entirely a Yawning Portal thing, but all my players were also in the YP campaign so I spun it into it in a way. It started off at the Yawning Portal during Midwinter. Jericho was enjoying a festive meal and decided to tell those present about the story of the Gre’nich goblin tribe and the biggest heist in all of Midwinter. 

The Gre’nich were a small tribe of goblins that lived north of a small halfling settlement called Lowhill. A very small settlement. Each year, the halflings celebrated Midwinter, and the goblins were getting a bit jealous. So they decided to take Midwinter for themselves.

Five rogues were sent to take it all with their “bag of holding” (which was literally just a giant sack, rather than an actual Bag of Holding). Knife Knife, the inquisitive, Goo Bega the mastermind, Kake the scout, Nin the arcane trickster, and Wub Wub the thief.

On the way to Lowhill, they encountered a half elf courier... who they viciously murdered on the spot. And then took his things. Knife Knife ate the map he carried.

Upon arriving to Lowhill, the first thing that happened was... well. Viciously murdering a snowman. Not that it was alive or anything, but it was just one of the casualties for the evening.

Two of the three homes had a lit fireplace. And they started off with one of the ones that was ‘active’. A few of the goblins went up to the roof, with Wub Wub climbing down the chimney despite the fact that there was a fire down there. She tried to pour butter on the flames but that obviously didn’t work to her favor. On the other side, Kake entered through the window and ate the cheesecake on the table. She heard voices of young halfling children who seemed to be waiting for someone.

Goo and Knife Knife went to the front door to grab their attention, pretending to be putting on some sort of show for Midwinter. While they were talking to the older child, Wubwub came down the chimney and promptly murdered the younger one who was still by the fireplace. This caused the older sister to let out a psychic scream. The parents woke and went to investigate, only to get crushed by the Midwinter tree in their home as Wubwub pushed it over onto them. While the girl screamed, Goo and Knife Knife tried to drown out the noise by loudly singing.

It was Knife Knife who ended up silencing the psychic child. They raided the household, then went to the home without any lights, wondering why no one in the little village seemed to be alerted.

Upon looking into the window, Kake could see some dogs sleeping inside. All the windows were locked from the inside, so they decided to break in through the front door. The moment they stepped inside, the dogs were up an alert. They charged, but Knife Knife somehow managed to get them to heel and obey him. It was also around then that they found that no sound seemed to escape or enter the house for whatever reason. A reason that was soon revealed as one of the residence of the household was a really noisy snorer. 

These residents were also murdered. Their gifts were taken, and so were their dogs. Among the gifts, they found a crate that they thought said Fra Gee Lay. It had a leg shaped lamp inside... that they quickly broke when they threw it into their “bag of holding”. There was also a duck with sharp teeth. And many dog treats.

And in the final home, they found their greatest challenge yet. The windows were all boarded up. Once more, Wubwub went to take the chimney, but not before she and Kake nearly slipped on some ice in front of the door. Nin quickly melted that down, quickly impressing the rest of the group. Kake stepped into the door, and a trap was sprung! An ornament flew right into her face. Now alerted, the group began to check around. It didn’t help much.

Nin triggered a tripwire but managed to dodge the paintcans that came swinging her way. She then ended up slipping on some marbles and fell on the jacks. And then she also got her hand caught in a mousetrap while she was digging through the presents laying around. She wasn’t the only one though.

In one of the side rooms, Knife Knife found a chest... that burst a stink bomb upon opening. Thankfully he didn’t have a full stomach like Kake... who by the way was stuffing herself completely with fruitcake that was left out.

Wub Wub, when she finally came in, also ended up triggering a trap as she got roped under a bed.

But no one was home otherwise.

Weary from their harrowing experiences with the trapfilled home, they stepped on out.

And in the distance a jingle could be heard. Upon looking up, they could see a red light. And before long, a man clad in red armor, riding upon a reindeer came landing onto the snow by them. His shield bore the symbol of Lliira; for this was Klaus, one of her chosen. And he was here with his companion, Ru’do.

He demanded the goblins return all they’ve stolen first of all, but they refused. And so Klaus took up arms, preparing for battle. Before Ru’do could take back to the skies, Wub Wub managed to jump onto his back. Klaus put Knife Knife and Goo to sleep with a well placed spell, but it didn’t help him enough in the end. Even with Ru’do providing cover from above with eldritch blasts and guiding bolts, the two couldn’t overcome this band of goblins. They fell... literally in Ru’do’s case with Wub Wub upon his back, and the goblins now had two real bags of holding full of Midwinter gifts to bring back to the tribe.

The story ended there, as we went back to the Yawning Portal crew. Lan had fallen asleep at some point with his face in his mashed potatoes. The group enjoyed the rest of the evening in their festive manner.
