Visitors in Nepal are now banned from trekking alone. It is now mandatory for travelers looking to hike across Nepal’s stunning remote landscapes to hire a licensed guide or go with a group, the government announced just yesterday.
Five years ago, Nepal banned foreigners from scaling Mount Everest without a sanctioned escort. Now 5 years later (In April), the new policy takes effect.
There are eight of the world’s 10 tallest mountains in this largely isolated Himalayan nation, nestled between giants India and China.
The country’s isolation and inaccessibility-which has preserved its mystifying ancient culture and pristine natural surroundings-makes the country so popular with backpackers from around the world.
It is one of the largest contributors to the country’s tourism-based economy, but the cost of running search-and-rescue missions when solo hikers become lost or stuck is extremely high.

Aside from unlicensed guides and tour companies, Lamichhane said that unlicensed outfits also cause problems. Since such outfits do not pay taxes, they steal jobs from legitimate local Nepalese.
In some cases, the trekking association has requested us to stop unauthorized trekking operations. This has been a long-standing demand from tourism associations….he said
He believes the new regulations make sense, according to Ian Taylor, the owner of a reputable trekking company in Nepal. Due to the growing number of tourists attempting difficult climbs and expeditions in the region, such measures have become necessary, he said.
“The region has drastically changed over the years,” he explained. “You used to see only experienced hikers and climbers in the region, many of whom traveled without guides and were completely self-sufficient.”
According to him, “Now there are far more people traveling in the region, and they are more tourists than trekkers. They are not self-sufficient in the outdoors and therefore require the assistance of guides.”
Although some enthusiasts might not support a blanket ban on solo adventuring, Taylor explained that the Nepali government does not have the resources to thoroughly vet every single visa applicant.
Having loved the mountains and visited mountain regions around the world, he said, “I am extremely disappointed that it has come to this.” It is never our intention to restrict people from trekking alone and restrict people’s access to the mountains, but the Nepali situation is unique and changes must be made.”
