The First Carbon-Positive Hotel in the U.S. Is Extremely Trippy Inside
Tumblr media
With the rise in sustainable travel, eco-friendly hotels worldwide are implementing compostable packaging, water-efficient laundry practices, and indoor-outdoor designs to attract environmentally conscious travelers. However, the new Populus hotel in Denver is taking it a step further by aiming to be more like a tree.
Opening in downtown Denver this summer, Populus is the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States. It elevates sustainable travel by incorporating low-carbon concrete mixes, high-recycled materials, and other eco-friendly construction methods. The hotel is also offsetting its long-term carbon emissions by planting trees in Gunnison County, Colorado. Over 70,000 Engelmann Spruce trees, a local species endangered by beetles, have already been planted. These trees will absorb more carbon than the hotel will emit over its lifetime. Guests can even visit this forest using the GPS coordinates 38°03'59.4"N 106°55'24.6"W.

The hotel's most eye-catching feature is its facade, inspired by Colorado’s Aspen trees. Designed by Studio Gang, the creators of Chicago's Aqua Tower and San Francisco's MIRA tower, the hotel’s white exterior is adorned with window-like openings that mimic the patterns of Aspen trees while providing shade and enhancing efficiency.

This nature-inspired theme continues inside the hotel’s 265 rooms and multiple dining areas, which feature neutral tones like sand and terra cotta and natural materials such as reclaimed Wyoming fencing wood and mushroom-based "leather" tapestries.

The hotel's two restaurants will minimize waste and collaborate with local regenerative farmers to serve seasonal dishes. The rooftop bar, Stellar Jay, offers live-fire cooking, wild game, and breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.

ATTRACTING ECO-CONSCIOUS GUESTS WITH SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
Tumblr media
In today’s world, sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a vital aspect of doing business, especially in the hospitality industry. More and more travelers are seeking accommodations that align with their environmental values. For hotels, adopting sustainable practices is not only beneficial for the planet but also an effective way to attract environmentally conscious guests. Here are some strategies hotels can implement to become greener and draw in eco-minded travelers.
1. Energy Efficiency
Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances and Lighting
Switch to LED lighting throughout the hotel. LEDs use significantly less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs.
Install energy-efficient appliances and HVAC systems. Look for ENERGY STAR-rated products to ensure optimal energy savings.
Utilize Smart Technology
Implement smart thermostats that adjust heating and cooling based on occupancy and weather conditions.
Use motion sensors for lighting in common areas and guest rooms to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
2. Water Conservation
Install Low-Flow Fixtures
Replace existing faucets, showerheads, and toilets with low-flow alternatives to significantly reduce water usage without compromising guest comfort.
Implement a Linen and Towel Reuse Program
Encourage guests to reuse towels and bed linens by offering incentives such as discounts or loyalty points. Make it easy for guests to opt into this program by providing clear instructions.
3. Waste Reduction
Adopt a Comprehensive Recycling Program
Place recycling bins in guest rooms, common areas, and back-of-house operations. Clearly label bins to ensure proper sorting of recyclables.
Partner with local recycling facilities to ensure that recyclable materials are processed correctly.
Minimize Single-Use Plastics
Replace single-use plastic toiletries with refillable dispensers.
Provide guests with reusable water bottles and install water refill stations throughout the property.
Offer biodegradable or reusable alternatives for items such as straws, cutlery, and takeaway containers.
4. Sustainable Sourcing
Choose Eco-Friendly Suppliers
Source products and services from suppliers that prioritize sustainability. This includes everything from cleaning products to food and beverages.
Offer organic, locally sourced food in your restaurants to reduce carbon footprint and support local economies.
Furnish with Sustainable Materials
Opt for furniture and decor made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials. This not only supports the environment but also adds a unique, eco-chic aesthetic to your hotel.
5. Green Building Practices
Certify Your Property
Pursue green building certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.
Retrofit existing buildings to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
6. Engage and Educate Guests
Promote Your Green Initiatives
Use your website, social media, and in-room materials to inform guests about your sustainable practices and how they can participate.
Highlight your eco-friendly initiatives during the booking process to attract environmentally conscious travelers.
Offer Green Experiences
Provide guests with opportunities to engage in sustainable activities, such as eco-tours, wildlife conservation programs, or community-based projects.
Host educational workshops or talks on sustainability topics relevant to your location.
7. Support Local Communities
Engage in Community Projects
Partner with local organizations to support environmental and social projects. This could include beach clean-ups, tree planting, or supporting local schools and charities.
Encourage guests to participate in these activities by offering them as part of the guest experience.
Conclusion
By implementing these sustainable practices, hotels can significantly reduce their environmental impact while attracting a growing market of eco-conscious travelers. Not only does this enhance your hotel’s reputation and appeal, but it also contributes to a healthier planet. Guests who value sustainability will appreciate your efforts and are more likely to become loyal customers, spreading the word about your commitment to making a positive difference. Embrace these changes today and watch as your hotel becomes a leader in sustainable hospitality.

Green Getaways: Your Guide to a Sustainable Summer Vacation in Europe
Tumblr media
Green Getaways: Your Guide to a Sustainable Summer Vacation in Europe Are you thinking of heading out for a summer vacation in Europe? If yes, why not make it an eco-friendly one? A sustainable holiday not only helps you minimize your ecological footprint but also allows you to explore some of the most beautiful and offbeat places in Europe. In this article, we'll give you some tips on how to plan a green getaway in Europe while creating a positive impact on the environment. What is Sustainable Tourism? Sustainable tourism refers to traveling in a way that minimizes its environmental, social, and economic impact. This type of tourism takes into account the preservation of nature, the protection of wildlife and local culture, and the promotion of responsible travel practices. It supports local communities and encourages travelers to adopt sustainable habits that protect the environment. Choose Environmentally Friendly Transportation One way to have a sustainable vacation is by choosing an eco-friendly mode of transportation. Instead of flying, why not explore Europe by train? Traveling by train is not only a more sustainable option, but it also allows you to admire the stunning landscapes of the continent. You can also opt for electric cars or bicycles for short distances. Stay in Eco-Friendly Accommodations Choosing an eco-friendly stay is crucial for having a sustainable vacation. Choose hotels or homestays that are committed to sustainable tourism and have eco-friendly practices like using renewable energy, waste management, or organic food sourcing. You can also opt for farm stays, campsites, or tiny houses that have minimal impact on the environment. Eat Local and Organic Food One of the benefits of traveling sustainably is discovering traditional and organic foods that reflect the local culture. Eating local and organic food supports the local economy and reduces the carbon footprint caused by food transportation. Try to visit farmer's markets, local food fairs, and restaurants that use locally sourced ingredients. Choose Sustainable Activities When planning a sustainable vacation, choose activities that support the conservation and preservation of natural resources. You can opt for hiking, kayaking, cycling, or other outdoor activities that allow you to connect with nature. You can also volunteer for environmental organizations or participate in eco-tourism activities that support local communities. Leave No Trace Finally, it is essential to leave no trace while traveling responsibly. Make sure you dispose of waste in an eco-friendly manner, carry a reusable water bottle, avoid using plastic bags, and respect local customs and traditions. Conserving natural resources, minimizing waste, and reducing the carbon footprint can make a positive impact on the environment. Summary: A sustainable summer vacation in Europe can be a great way to explore beautiful places and foster a positive impact on the environment. Choosing environmentally friendly transportation, eco-friendly accommodations, local and organic food, sustainable activities, and leaving no trace can help you travel sustainably and make your trip enjoyable. Join the sustainable tourism movement and make a difference for the planet, the local communities, and future generations. #GreenGetaways #SustainableTourism #EcoFriendlyTravel #TravelMindfully #ResponsibleTourism #LeaveNoTrace #TravelGreen #SPORT Read the full article

⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣⁣ Taken on 04/09/2019.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Breathtakingly beautiful Glen Coe – literally 'Valley of Weeping' – is a spectacular mountain valley between velvety green conical peaks, their tops often wreathed in cloud as these photos show, and their flanks streaked by cascades of rock and scree.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Considered the most famous and dramatic glen of all, Glen Coe is unashamedly given over to tourism, especially during the summer months, though solitude is easy to find in some parts of the area.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The best part has got to be the heart of the glen where you will come across huge rock buttresses known as the 'Three Sisters' on one side and the Anoach Eagach ridge on the other. It has certainly got a grand yet grim feel to it, particularly with the dark clouds hovering above that add an eerie, unworldly quality to the landscape.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Catch the 914 bus from Glasgow Queen Street station or Fort William if you're planning to visit Loch Ness, too.⁣⁣ ______________________________________⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #Glencoe #Scotland #Landscape #TheHighlands #HighlandsOfScotland #ScottishHighlands #LandscapePhotography #Britain #GreatBritain #UnitedKingdom #OurPlanetDaily #Earth_Shotz #TheGlobeWanderer #WanderLust #EarthFocus #MotherNature #TravelGreen #TravelScotland #VisitScotland #Tourism #FilmLocation #ScenicLocations #BestDestinations #RoamThePlanet #BritishSummer #CapturingBritain #DramaticSkies #ILikeTravel #Mountains #MountainScenery (at Three Sisters Of Glencoe) https://www.instagram.com/p/COAaYwylrTQ/?igshid=eocewihkak2
