“On a steal horse I ride. Wanted dead or alive.” I know I know: Enough with the cheese! It was great to get outside in some heat and throw down 45 miles on this beast. - -#nuunlife #triathlon_world #ironmantraining #ironmantri #bike #feltbike #cycle #cycling #cyclinglife #cyclist #swimbikerun #yakima #yakimavalley #washingtonstate #triathlon_world #triathlontraining #triathete #triathlonshots #humansoftriathlon #garmin #summer https://www.instagram.com/p/By0oi2Nh_ql/?igshid=2v7v77ru0f1p

Throwback Thursday!
This is just before the 2015 Chicago SuperSprint Triathlon I did as part of the triple challenge. I had trouble parking near the venue so I had to ride my bike with that huge backpack. Once I got there I realized I forgot my bike number, so after scrambling for awhile (and help from race volunteers as well as some of the news crews covering the event) I ended up with this piece of plastic tablecloth duct-taped to my top tube.
It was rainy that morning so everything was pretty much soaked before, during, and after. Transition (a parking lot) was flooded in my assigned place - I had to figure out a way to keep my Vibrams from floating away :)
And some surprise winds/currents turned Lake Michigan SUPER cold - like mid 50s, so that made for an extra chilly start. But the whole thing was so fun I signed up to do it again this year!

I had my VO2 tested over the winter at 160 bpm and above is my heart rate from the half marathon I did last weekend.  I guess the data still makes sense.  I averaged 173 bpm over the 1:49 and did fade a little on the back half and I was sore as heck for 2 days after.

Final Base Cycle and a Half Marathon this Weekend
My 6th and final base cycle begins tomorrow and I'll top out at 20.5 hours in the third week of this cycle.  2 build cycles after that then it's prime time at Ironman Coeur d'Alene.  Before that though, my first and only running race of the season is this weekend - the13.1 at the DC Rock n' Roll.  I ran this race in 1:51 last year to take the title as fastest in my house but a few months later, my wife ran a 1:50 so she's reigning champion.  Time to take the crown back!!!

Racine Hagerstown Sprint Tri Leading up to this race the weather H.O.T. hot but we got lucky and the storms came through over night to cool it off into the 70's for race morning. Racine did a good job organizing the race - packet pick up and all pre-race activities were smooth. Swim: The swim was a 300m 'snake' swim in a 25 meter pool which was a little chaotic but that's to be expected. I never really got into a grove on the swim and averaged 2:07/100m with a 45.58 SWOLF. T1: My T1 time was 1:29 with no issues. I was happy with the clean transition. Bike: I felt great on the bike averaging 22.4 mph over the 11.3 miles. The bike course was flat and downhill with some long straight aways on the front half and I averaged 24 mph on my first 5 mile split. A couple of small rollers on the back half with some tight turns brought my average down on the back half. T2: My T2 time was 1:10 with no issues. I was happy with the clean transition. I cut my T2 time in half this race by going sockless. No more fighting my wet feet into socks on sprints! Run: It started to heat up on the run a bit but the run course was partly shaded with some good hills. I averaged 8:18 min miles over the 5k and felt solid. Smart move to bring a bottle of heed with me on the run as I saved some time at water stops. Overall a solid time at 1:04:42 which put me 8th in my age group and in the top 9% overall. The wife and her friend also had great races placing 8 & 9 in their age group.
