That thing we're all doing

My first Tumblr entry was 12 years ago. I was 45-years-old.

In the left picture I had just completed my first marathon (Chicago) with my college roommate (he was on Tumblr as TriDad at the time).

Those were the days when my circle of Tumblrs were the "runblrs." Good times. I got to meet a lot of those people in person, both at races around the country and also when some of them visited Sheila and me at our house. Those were the days I loved to make fun of running skirts. Now that I think of it I should do that some more.

The right picture was a few months later, after a night time bike ride to a grocery store. That particular evening I lazily shopped without removing my bike helmet. I had enjoyed a beer or two and was craving a turkey sandwich.

The cashier was not impressed with my bike helmet or the fact that I left the light on the whole time I was in the store. He tersely asked if I had a store coupon for the deli turkey. I hated those store coupons and stubbornly said, "No. I will not use a coupon tonight."

He gave me this combination glare and smirk and replied, "You know what? You are using a coupon tonight." Then he grabbed an extra coupon he had and scanned it.

I lost the argument but saved money. I can't complain.

As I searched my earliest posts I found others I liked. My wife was sheriff's office detective. One day she took me to work and let me shoot the gun from the trunk of her squad car.

I wore that same green jacket today.

Wow, I have posted a lot in the last dozen years. Scrolling through it tonight brought back many nice memories.

Came out to Utah today to visit @tridad. Love these mountains and hills. Last time I was here I didn't notice them as the plane was on approach. I think I was on the other side of the aircraft that time. Today I was startled when I looked out the window and we were lower than the nearby mountains.

I'm happy to be here for a week to visit, catch up, read, mountain bike and relax. We walked around Park City this afternoon.

Wicklow Harbour Olympic distance (1.5km swim 🏊40km cycle 🚵‍♂️10km run 🏃‍♂️) @base2race.ie triathlon race done✅ This was my first tri race since 2019, also my first open swim in the balmy 😂🫣Irish sea this year, so happy I survived this:) With 2h39min it is my PB for Olympic distance so happy with that - but there I know there is loads of room for improvement:) 🫣 It was a fantastic day, well organised but - there were no medals!;) If you are struggling with your training signing up for a race and participating is a great motivator - I know it helped me immensely! Yakushi tridad, kondo, Yakushiji, Nara, Japan

The medium used for this work is bronze. It depicts Buddha, or the Healing Buddha (Yakushi Nyoria) sitting in between Nikko the bodhisattva/bosatsu of the sun (right) and Gakko the bosatsu of the moon (left). Buddha is 8 feet 4 inches tall including the base. All three of them are surrounded by a Halo of light signifying their importance in the Buddhist religion. A Halo used in art is indication that the people depicted in the work are sacred or holy. Buddha, Nikko, and Gakko are all seen holding their right hands up with their index and thumb touching while the left hand sits in the lap. This hand symbol is called the  Vitarka Mudra in Buddhism, it  symbolizes Buddha’s teaching and the circle created by the thumb and index finger stands for the never ending flow of energy. Drapery is used to create the effect that their bodies are more revealed while their clothing is flowing on them.

Sheila and Matt were in a cribbage tournament today at a bar I like. They weren’t partners with each other. Sheila and her cribbage partner came in 2nd place and got a little prize money. I hope that covered the bar tab, honey!

Afterwards people walked over to a brewery for some locally made beer. Matt brought home a crowler of Lord Nelson barley wine ale for me. Strong stuff. It reminds me of a Belgian dubbel or maybe tripel.

Before I enjoyed my beer I went on a hour long motorcycle ride. Part of my journey took me through downtown Minneapolis. In The Graduate Benjamin Braddock was given a word of advice: “Plastics.” A modern, local spin on that would be: “Plywood,” possibly with a side of “chain link fencing.” The next few weeks will be interesting.

Tonight I fired up our new Blackstone griddle. The burger I made I consider worthy of a good dive bar & grill. The Blackstone’s large cooking surface is really nice. Asparagus and diced onion sizzled around my ground beef. The bun came late to the party but only needed a short time to get nicely toasted (as will I be, after draining this crowler of Lord Nelson). Sheila got some heavy-duty spatulas that have sharp edges and are terribly effective at dicing and slicing. I plan to use this griddle a lot this summer.

Now a long distance cheers to @tridad who is watching the Blackhawks game with a martini while Sheila and I watch the NCAA Frozen Four championship with craft beer.
