ok i blame absolutely no one for completely ignoring chromeos because 90% of anyone's first interaction with it is going to be enterprised managed devices, and their inbuilt MDM is unfortunately pretty damn airtight, but if you have a chromeos device that you actually own (or it's enabled on your whatever corporate managed device) it can run both linux applications and android applications. you can run VMs and use translation layers to do the same thing on normal linux but google makes it accessible it's nice for a kind of dev environment. i think you can legitimately install steam in the virtualized linux environment and it "works" for some definitions of that word (idk i have never tried it, my experience lately is limited to arm64 chromeos rather than x86)

i've turned into a chromeOS apologist

Disclaimer: I’m writing about my experience with major OS (Windows 10, macOs High/Sierra, Ubuntu/Manjaro) using a Solid State Drive. It has a huge impact in term of speed and it could be different from your own experience.

Hello there. To begin with, this post isn’t about what’s the best OS for everyday programming, it could depend on the stack used, Misc programs and specially YOU, so i’ll try to describe all the good/bad things that happened during my everyday workflows.

But before that I should let you know my programming stack so you won't get confused later. I mainly use:

PHP frameworks and CMS

nodejs frameworks for frontend

react native/ionic for mobile dev

Photoshop (with CssHat) for HTML Integration, banner for mobile apps.

ms office due to my current job.[1]

Ubuntu (Unity/Gnome):

By the end of 2015 and after a good run with Windows 7 and using Ubuntu just occasionally in virtual machines I thought I would give it a shot with a daily usage so I installed the 15.10 version. back then i was programming in PHP, Java and C# (because of my Software engineering Studies), php and apache had great performances locally, same for java but used a windows 7 VM for Visual Studio, Ms Office and Adobe Photoshop, because all the alternatives (Darkable/Gimp, Open office) weren't at the same levels. I tried but the more you use them the more you notice their weak points such as ease of use, backward compatibility.

I had a good (exactly 2 years) run switching between Unity and Gnome DE (I was the n°1 hater for KDE btw), but over time and even with SSD it felt a kinda slow (I was always stuck with 16.04 LTS) and honestly, I wasn’t fan of the Ubuntu’s PPAs either and then I discovered the Hackintosh community.

macOs (10.12/10.14)

So after a hell of an installation process I managed to run macOs Sierra smoothly on a laptop that has hardware near to macbook pro late 2012 (HP elitebook 840 G1). Apps installed with one simple drag n’ drop (applies to android studio too). It run the Android Virtual Device smoother than windows 7 and ubuntu with the same laptop, i was very surprised, the memory management, the apps integration and the overall stability was so great. At that time I finished my studies so no more Java or .Net programming, and the adobe/ms office suite was a strong point compared to Linux in general so every program ran natively without the need of any VM, with our beloved Unix cli.

The only drawback I had with mac, or with hackintosh, is the system updates/upgrades it was so painful to do it breaks your system every time, I was backing up the whole bootable system image whenever I attempted to update. Because the Kexts (Kernel extensions or “drivers”) weren’t always backward compatible.

So in the end i was thinking to go back to linux again but not sure which distribution i will stick with again, I wanted a stable distro that i forgot completely about something called upgrades of “big updates”. In the meantime I give Windows 10 another shot after hearing it got better and better in the last years.

And again, after 2 years with no workflow complaints I backed up my hackintosh installation and installed the last build of windows 10.

Windows 10.

I’ll resume my experience with one line: “not great, not terrible” Compared, again, to mac os the system was very smooth in every way, snapping windows, switching virtual desktops, programs and files search in the start menu, no problem but! I already missed the unix cli. Yeah I know there’s cmder and other tools. The overall performance was okay but there was some latency when compiling node js apps. My workflow didn’t change. I used Laragon for all my php projects with phpstorm and it was perfect honestly. On the other hand Android Emulator was terrible even with 8gb or ram and ssd, mac os was handling it way better.

In the meantime I played with some linux distros in VMs and made the choice: Manjaro, KDE flavor.

Manjaro:

“You said you hated KDE right?” well yes but for a cause, one I didn’t want to bring back the Gnome memories i had with Ubuntu and second, I disliked is because its similarity in UI compared to Windows in general, 10 specially then I found how very customizable was and again i’ll resume it with one line: “everything is a widget”. So in term of UI I made my simple comfortable setup.

Now in term of programs and workflow I still use PhpStorm for my php and nodejs projects, npm and yarn installed globally and surprisingly npm run very fast compared to windows and mac; git already installed, but for my php projects I migrate all of them to docker with docker compose, majority of projects were based on Laravel, Prestashop, Wordpress and old native php apps. I managed to dockerize some of them from scratch, some with Laradock.

Java/.Net: RIP.

For mobile development there were some struggles during configuring ionic and react native’s first run but done with them quickly, no problem with android studio but the emulator “again” wasn’t that good as mac os, but not that bad like windows. And I discovered a helpful package that cast my connected android device to my screen and it’s shown as a virtual device but a physical one, called scrcpy from the genymotion team!

And finally these are just some of the benefits why I picked manjaro:

No big breaking updates.

A rolling release distro.

Fast security patches.

The Great Arch User Repository (AUR)

Snap and Flatpak support (but why?)

Very stable.

But still there are some drawback, linux’s ones in general:

Still needing photoshop and lightroom.

Ms Office for work purpose (Managed to use Web version since we have ms365 but still miss Excel for heavy use)

Conclusion:

Finally and personally I’ll stick with linux for these main two reasons: native support for docker (future projects could be deployed with it) and the unix environment similarity to production servers (cli, ssh and packages’ configuration). I understand many of you will disagree for many things said in the post but that’s okay! because, finally, we choose what will help us to give the most of us in terms of productivity.

How to Install Nextcloud on Ubuntu Server

There are a lot of things Windows Server does well. However, coming off of the NAS environment, there are a lot of things that it doesn’t. One of these is a simple method for web access to various files and folders, along with the ability to share them via user login or simple url. Until recently, there had been only one real player in this space, OwnCloud. I had fiddled with the product for some time, but features were slow to show and it just didn’t work the way I had been hoping it would.

When I had finished the last server build, I had been looking for a way to simply address the needs that QNAP had been fulfilling for me with ease. With MyQNAPCloud I could easily share files or folders without issue. While on the hunt for the latest release of OwnCloud, I hit Google and just tried something. I tried “OwnCloud vs” and let the magic of Google happen. That is how I found Nextcloud.

While I won’t get into how Nextcloud came to be, I will tell you that there are a ton of similarities between the two products. When you do some research, it will become clear why that is. However, that is neither here nor there, the product is attractive, seamless, but a major pain in the … to get running. As usual, the best things in life are on linux. With that in mind, I created a Hyper-V hosting Ubuntu Server LTS 16.04 and started my journey.

Much of what I detail out here will be under the assumption that you have a CLEAN Ubuntu LAMP server up and running. For me, Hyper-V was a quick and logical start, but that doesn’t limit you to anything. Feel free to run VirtualBox, VMWare, or dedicated hardware.

Considerations

Before you build out your virtual machine for this install, there are some considerations to make. For instance, you need to plan for the amount of space that your VM will occupy. For me, it is easy, all my folders reside on another server, so a 100GB virtual hard drive is overkill. I have seen some “paid” for preconfigured VMs running around in 500GB and 1TB flavors.

System Requirements

(Taken Directly from Nextcloud.com)

Memory

Memory requirements for running an Nextcloud server are greatly variable, depending on the numbers of users and files, and volume of server activity. Nextcloud needs a minimum of 128MB RAM, and we recommend a minimum of 512MB.

Recommended Setup for Running Nextcloud For best performance, stability, support, and full functionality we recommend:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 / Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

MySQL/MariaDB

PHP 7.0 +

Apache 2.4 with mod_php

Supported Platforms

Server: Linux (Debian 7, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3 & 12, Red Hat Enterprise Linux/CentOS 6.5 and 7 (7 is 64-bit only), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS)

Web server: Apache 2 (mod_php, php-fpm) or Nginx (php-fpm)

Databases: MySQL/MariaDB 5.5+; PostgreSQL; Oracle 11g (currently only possible if you contact us <https://nextcloud.com/enterprise> as part of a subscription)

PHP 5.6 + required

Hypervisors: Hyper-V, VMware ESX, Xen, KVM

Desktop: Windows XP SP3 (EoL Q2 2015), Windows 7+, Mac OS X 10.7+ (64-bit only), Linux (CentOS 6.5, 7 (7 is 64-bit only), Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, 14.10, Fedora 20, 21, openSUSE 12.3, 13, Debian 7 & 8).

Mobile apps: iOS 7+, Android 4+

Web browser: IE11+, Microsoft Edge, Firefox 14+, Chrome 18+, Safari 7+

Database Requirements for MySQL / MariaDB

The following is currently required if you’re running Nextcloud together with a MySQL / MariaDB database:

Disabled or BINLOG_FORMAT = MIXED configured Binary Logging (See: MySQL / MariaDB with Binary Logging Enabled)

InnoDB storage engine (MyISAM is not supported)

“READ COMMITED” transaction isolation level (See: Database “READ COMMITED” transaction isolation level)

Installing Ubuntu Server

Download: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/server/thank-you?version=16.04.1&architecture=amd64

Walking through the standard install, for the most part, is a series of next and enter clicks. There isn’t much excitement. After you get past choosing your language, Install Ubuntu Server.

The installation will guide you through a series of pretty standard questions:

Once the additional components are completed, it is time to pick your system’s hostname. If you don’t know, a hostname is a label assigned to a device for identification. I named mine “nextcloud”, but while creating this tutorial, I left the default in place.

The username and password you choose are completely up to you. Make them something you will not forget!

When asked the next few questions, the easiest way to go is with the defaults, that is until you get to Paritition Disks.

Partition disks, Yes. Full Size, Yes. Write Changes, Yes. Proxy, continue.

Choosing whether Ubuntu will install updates automatically is up to you, this is something you can change.

Software selection is the start. Here, the easiest way to proceed is to select LAMP, SAMBA, OpenSSH.

If you selected the previous recommendations, you will eventually be asked for a MySQL password. Pick a password that is easy to remember but hard enough to guess.

Install GRUB

As your installation finishes, it is important to take note that you have a basic install of Ubuntu Server. This is not a hardened version nor are there any security considerations made. Security is not something to take lightly and there are plenty of threads on many great sites that can get you going.

Installing Nextcloud

Once your system has rebooted, the fun work of installing Nextcloud can begin. I would like to start off by saying, I am not the author of this entire process. While some of it is mine, I have also collected the information from various websites and collected them into a single tutorial.

Log into your system with the username and password you provided during your install.

When you first log into your server, you will be dropped in your user’s home directory. The path for this will be, by default, /home/username

There are a few modules that Nextcloud will need

sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev php-zip php-dom php-xmlwriter php-xmlreader php-gd php-curl php-mbstring

Let’s start by fetching the latest build, available at the time of this tutorial, of Nextcloud

wget https://download.nextcloud.com/server/releases/nextcloud-11.0.1.tar.bz2

Now, we need mod_rewrite

a2enmod rewrite

Restart Apache

sudo service apache2 reload

Once the download has completed, let’s untar.

tar -vxjf nextcloud-11.0.1.tar.bz2

Move the folder to /var/www. When you first run “sudo” you will have to re-enter your password.

sudo mv nextcloud /var/www

If you plan on connecting Nextcloud to your Windows Server, like I am, you will have to make sure you have Samba installed and configured. In my efforts, I have found that SMB2 is required for Nextcloud to function properly.

sudo apt-get install smbclient php-smbclient

Change the configuration of samba for SMB2

sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf

When the file opens, you will have to add teh following lines under [global]

max protocol = SMB2 client max protocol = SMB2

To exit the editor CTRL-X and click Y to confirm, then Enter to save

Create the apache configuration file

sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/nextcloud.conf

Paste the following into the file and save.

Alias /nextcloud "/var/www/nextcloud/"

Alias /nextcloud “/var/www/nextcloud/” Options +FollowSymlinks AllowOverride All Dav off

SetEnv HOME /var/www/nextcloud SetEnv HTTP_HOME /var/www/nextcloud

To exit the editor CTRL-X and click Y to confirm, then Enter to save

Create a symbolic link for apache

sudo ln -s /etc/apache2/sites-available/nextcloud.conf /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/nextcloud.conf

Enable the apache modules required for Nextcloud.

sudo a2enmod headers

restart apache

sudo service apache2 reload

Create the DB for Nextcloud

sudo mysql -u root -p

When prompted, enter the password your created for your database during the install

Create the user for your database. In the example below, I chose nextcloud as the password for the user nextclouduser. DO NOT USE THAT PASSWORD! Create your own password.

CREATE USER nextclouduser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'nextcloud';

Grant all privileges for that user

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON nextcloud.* TO nextclouduser@localhost;

Exit

Secure and provide write abilities for Nextcloud (nextcloud in the example below is the username I chose during install)

sudo nano /home/nextcloud/grantperm.sh

Paste the following

To exit the editor CTRL-X and click Y to confirm, then Enter to save

Grant execution privileges

sudo chmod +x grantperm.sh

Run the script

sudo ./grantperm.sh

Open a browser, navigate to the IP address or hostname of the server you just completed to finalize the Nextcloud install

http://ipaddress/nextcloud

If you don’t know the IP address of the machine, you can use ifconfig to find it

ifconfig

Fill in the required fields and enjoy. If you followed this tutorial to the letter, pick a username and password for nextcloud admin

Database user: nextclouduser Password: nextcloud Database: nextcloud Database host: localhost

There are more things to do, for instance, there are a ton of security concerns to consider. There are also caching recommendations. I also highly recommend that you consider using https for your server.

One of the most interesting features that iOS 12 brings to the table is Screen Time, which helps users track and limit their smartphone usage.

In our brief time with the feature, Screen Time gave us a clear idea as to which apps and categories of apps we spent the most time using on any given day or across the past couple of days, which in our case were social networking apps. Using those statistics, you can set usage timers for individual apps or app categories. Once you reach the limit, you can choose to ignore the warning and override it for the rest of the day, or just give yourself 15 extra minutes. We tried it out with Twitter, and the screen filled up with the timer warning, but how effective this will be in the long term remains to be seen.

Another nifty feature that Screen Time offers is the ability to see how many times you pick up your iPhone per hour, or throughout an entire day or week. For us, it was about 17 times per hour, which was surprising to realise. Being able to track this statistic might actually motivate users to cut down on frequently reaching for their iPhones. You can even see the time periods during which the handset was picked up most frequently. Additionally, Screen Time shows how many notifications your iPhone has received and from which app, helping you uninstall or disable notifications for the ones that distract you the most.

Screen Time also has other settings including Downtime that acts as an enhanced version of Do Not Disturb. Always Allowed lists the apps that will show notifications even when Downtime is enabled, and Content and Privacy settings let you to block sensitive or inappropriate content.

A welcome change from recent versions of Apple’s iOS is grouped notifications. This is similar to how Google’s Android has been doing things for the longest time. Initial impressions, fortunately, reveal an improved Notification Center with individual emails and messages under control rather than filling up endless space. However, most likely thanks to bugs in the developer preview, our lock screen gave us mixed results, displaying notifications in the old manner in some instances. That’s the price one pays for installing early beta, and this is why you shouldn’t be installing them on your primary device.

Swiping right on notifications now reveals an additional option – Manage. From here, users can choose to prevent notifications from specific apps from showing up on the lock screen, or simply turn them off altogether; the latter being a much-appreciated shortcut.

Another exciting feature that has been added to iOS is Live Listen support for AirPods. This feature, designed to help people with hearing impairments, lets people pick up sound around them with their iOS devices and route it to their earphones. It was originally introduced in 2014 to work with Made For iPhone (MFI) hearing aids, and now with iOS 12, it will support Apple’s own truly wireless pair of earphones. While the new Shortcuts app hasn’t yet appeared in the iOS 12 Developer Preview, certain shortcuts have been made available under the Siri subhead in Settings. As part of ARKit 2, Apple has released a new native app called Measure, which makes even more use of the AR capabilities first implemented with iOS 11. As per our first impressions, it seems like a cool app to have, letting you measure real-world objects in actual units, with an extremely intuitive and neat user interface. We used the app to measure the dimensions of objects such as laptops and smartphones, and the results were accurate enough to be useful. Measuring human height was a bit less accurate, and you might need a very steady hand. Interestingly, our iPhone gave us haptic feedback when the app detected edges, helping us make accurate markings.
