BOTD: Eared Quetzal

"Long regarded as a rare and elusive specialty of the Mexican mountains, this big trogon stunned birders by appearing north of the border in 1977, with a family group in Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains. Since then it has occurred several more times in Arizona, in at least four ranges, and has been found nesting. Only a distant relative of the Elegant Trogon, this species is more closely related to the quetzals of the deep tropics."

December 2, 2023 - Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus) These trogons are found mostly in lowland and foothill forests from Panama south to Brazil and Bolivia. Foraging alone, as well as joining mixed-species flocks, they eat berries, fruits from palms and other plants, flowers, arthropods, and occasionally reptiles. They excavate cavities in termite nests and may rarely nest in tree holes, though the evidence for this is weak. Females lay clutches of two or three eggs.

The basic bird of the region, I started top down and worried the prevos were too plain but then again that is kind of the point of early route birds. Trogini are startlingly colourful birds, surprisingly well camouflaged in the jungles and forests they call home. Fruit lovers to the extreme, once a Trogini has found a suitable tree they won't leave until they have sampled all the fruit it has to offer and for a bird pokemon are actually quite content staying in one place. Trogetz continue their affiliation with fruit and will travel great distances to find a worthy tree. Once there they carve a hole in the tree and live there until they are done eating all of its fruit, their nest providing a great place to weather the weather and hide from predators. Quetzon have more active lifestyles than their young counterparts and make more time to preen and display, racing through the canopy with their elegant tails streaming behind them. Quetzon typically look for entire orchards as opposed to singular trees and hold them as a means to woo a mate, the two then living in bliss amongst the fruit. --Attack Info-- --Ability Info--
