“The reason myself and Kiara didn’t work was because of you. She knew that I was in love with you.”
Liam, Maxwell and the rest of the restaurant jumped in reaction to the echo of the glass shattering everywhere- the floor now covered in a sticky residue due to the mixture of alcohol. The two men jumped out of their seats, immediately rushing over to a shaking Riley- and witnessing Drake behind the bar stood dormant not knowing what to do.
“What did you do to her?” Maxwell shouted at his friend, assuming it was his fault as he hadn’t rushed over to help her.
“He did nothing, he was helping me with the drinks- you know how much of a klutz I am Max. I got distracted, they just slipped out of my hands.” Riley lied, not knowing if the two men knew the truth about Drakes feelings- his confession was still sinking in, not knowing how to react- not knowing how they would react to her secret, something she lied about a mear few hours previously.
“Lady Riley, you are not clumsy. Are you okay?” Noticing Liam picking up all the broken glass, she began to panic.
“I’m fine Liam. Go and sit down, I’ll clean it up then go on my break.”
“It’s fine, just get us a brush and something to put the broken glass in- I insist. I’m a king but I’m capable of cleaning up a bit of mess.” Riley nodded knowing she couldn’t refuse king’s orders even if he was in her city. Watching her leave, the two men snapped their attention towards Drake as he eventually moved from his position behind the bar.
“What did you do her?” Maxwell repeated his previous question. “Clearly she’s freaked out by something, she isn’t a klutz.”
“I... I told her that... fuck. I told her Kiara knew I was in love with her and that’s why we never worked. She wasn’t lying when she said they slipped out of her hands.”
“So why would she react all shaken up? Surely girls love it when a man tells them that they love her?” Maxwell was confused by her reaction, deep down he knew she had feelings towards Drake also. Everyone could see it, their stolen glances were noticed even if the two of them didn’t realise they were doing it.
*****
Sitting in silence, the three men cleared the glass up as Riley went on her break. Going back to their table, they slowly tucked into their meal- none of them wanting to mention her name. Not realising why they were still lingering in New York- hope. Hope that she would return with them was most likely the reasoning.
“Mommy!” The three men all turned their heads towards the bar, Riley had finished her break and was preparing a milkshake for a little girl sat on the edge of the bar.
Mommy they all said in unison, Maxwell was now wondering if that was the reasoning behind her panicking before. A man in a suit walked up to the bar and kissed Riley on the lips. Briefly focusing her gaze over towards the table- she knew they were going to question her immediately. Max, I don’t know what you’re on about? I’m definitely single, and I’ve definitely not ‘popped’ any kids out- thank you. At that moment in time saying this, she believed that they would be rushing back to Cordonia, she lied about being single because she didn’t want to hurt them all- especially Drake.
“Sorry i keep telling her to not call you mommy.”
“It’s fine, besides I’m going to be her mom soon. Is my ring fixed?” Retrieving the box out of his pocket, Riley grazed her finger over the diamonds.
“Of course it is. Here you go...” The man knelt down on one knee, sliding the elegant ring on to her finger.
“Riley Brooks, when I met you and hired you to look after my daughter- I instantly fell in love with you. I can’t wait to call you my wife.” The three of them all hugged each other- Drake gulped watching the interaction, Liam looked concerned at his friend who was clearly heartbroken. Maxwell on the other hand needed answers. Abruptly standing up, he stormed over interrupting the sweet family moment.
“Hi I’m Maxwell. And you are?” Scrutinising the mans body, Riley could tense that Maxwell was annoyed with her- she decided to begin with the introductions praying that the usual calm yet fun lord wouldn’t cause a scene.
“Erm Harry, this is Maxwell a close friend of mine, practically my brother.”
“Hi Maxwell, I’m Harry- this is my daughter Lissy.” Harry held his hand out towards Maxwell, who rudely ignored the gesture.
“Ah so this is the kid you look after.”
“Yes my soon to be step daughter.” Flaunting the ring in Max’s face, he was happy for her - but he knew she still loved Drake and that this was probably all a facade. It was difficult now a kid was involved. Mouthing I’m so sorry to him, he focused his gaze towards the little girl who was clearly in awe of Riley.
“Nice to meet ya, high five Lissy.” Lissy followed Maxwell’s actions. “Can I borrow you a sec Riley. Please.”
“Sure, I’ll see you two at home in the morning?” Giving then a brief hug, she followed Maxwell away from the bar- still in hearing distance for Liam and Drake to ear wig.
“So this is news..... I thought you was single and you couldn’t tell me?”
“You’ve been out of my life for three years Maxwell. I didn’t want to hurt any of you.”
“Yeah I wonder why you’ve been away for so long? We looked for you... couldn’t find you.... we all care for you.... has he got a big dick or something?”
“Well actually.....”
“Don’t answer that, it was a rhetorical question. What about Drake? He loves you...” Well actually I’m still madly in love with Drake. Harry doesn’t compare. I can’t break Harry’s heart, he’s done so much for me.
“He got in a relationship with Kiara when I left. I didn’t see him making much of an effort. Then he comes here admitting his feelings for me, the same feelings that I held for him. And only him. I’ve moved on Max, he should do the same. You guys are from Cordonia, I’m stuck here.”
Drake stormed out realising that he had lost her, realising now that she seemed happy- happier than she was during the social season. Liam was debating going after Drake, or speaking to Riley instead- choosing the second option he knew Drake was the type of person who needed to cool off before being confronted.
“I hear congratulations are in order Lady Riley.” Even though you insisted that you was single, he muttered to himself but still was able to wear that infamous stoic expression.
“Thank you your Majesty, I’m sorry for lying to you all.” Maxwell shot Liam a look of disapproval- in his head they needed to get Driley together not congratulate her and push her away from them.
“What time do you finish?” Maxwell asked changing the subject.
“In a couple of hours why?”
“Before you go home, come to my hotel room- I want to spend time with my sister before I leave you again.” Scribbling the hotel name and room number on a napkin, she agreed to see him. Liam shook his head, knowing exactly what his friend had planned- it was a dangerous game that Maxwell was playing.
****
Walking down the road to the Crowne Plaza, she got in the lift to the 30th floor, feeling dizzy in the lift she wasn’t sure if it was due to the lift skipping fifteen levels or nerves about spending time alone with Max. Knocking on the door of 3007, her eyes widened seeing someone other than Max- now realising that the younger Beaumont had set her up.
“Hi... is Max here? He told me to meet him at this room.” Little shit bag.
“You’ve got the wrong room Brooks. He’s on the floor below.”
“Okay, thanks. Have a safe flight back. It’s been good to see you Walker.” Fuck he’s got no shirt on, I need to get out of here quick.
“Riley wait...” Grabbing her hand, she felt that spark as she did all those years ago. “Come in for a drink? A brief catch up? If you... don’t want to .... it’s fine.”
“Whiskey?” She smiled softly at him, avoiding trying to look at his muscled body.
“That’s the most idiotic question you’ve asked. Of course there’s whiskey.” Opening the door wider, he allowed her in. Unknowingly to the two of them, Liam and Maxwell stood in the hallway and both high fived each other before returning to their separate rooms.
*****
“Here.”
“Thank you Drake.”
“So I now know why you freaked out... Congratulations Brooks, you deserve all the happiness in the world.” Not able to look at him in the eyes, she sighed before walking over to the window- looking down onto Times Square. Seeing everyone rushing about, witnessing couples taking selfies and sharing a smooch, watching people dressed in costumes conning people out of money in an instant.
“Thank you. But he’s not you....” Regretting this slip of the tongue, her mind was now confused more than ever.
“As Kiara was never you...” she heard him whimper as he laid on the bed. “I hoped that you would have returned to Cordonia on your own accord after we couldn’t find you. I imagined you coming back, I thought about how to woo you back, treat you like a girlfriend not like a suitor. Funny how things change.” Noticing her fidget with her engagement ring, he was jealous of her fiancé immediately. “Nice rock ya got there Brooks.”
“It’s too big and heavy, it slipped off my finger when we first became engaged and it became damaged. It feels weird wearing it again. It’s not me at all, I’d much prefer a simple ring- something that had a sentimental meaning.” Something like my grandmothers ring then, Drake thought before shaking his head.
“What happened to the little girl’s Mom?”
“She tragically passed away. I will never be her mom. I will never replace her mom, she just calls me it.”
“You’d make a brilliant mom Riley, she’s lucky to have you, as is he.” Standing up he poured himself another whiskey, staring deep into the brown liquid she joined him. Placing her hand over his, she took the tumbler away from him- placing it gently on the table along with her engagement ring that she had removed from her finger.
“Drake... there’s something you should know... I couldn’t let you return to Cordonia without you understanding something..” Keeping her hand resting over his, she turned to face him- sorrow in her eyes.
“Riley it’s fine, you don’t have to explain anything to me. I’m fine. As I said twice before you deserve happiness.”
“I do though, because you are acting as if I never loved you the way you stormed out of the restaurant.”
“I did that because I couldn’t see you with him. I blame myself for letting you go. Loving you in secret throughout the social season kept me sane, made me look forward to attending events for once in my whole life- I could have died saving Liam and Kiara from the assassins. All I thought about was you...I was thankful that you wasn’t there.”
“I heard that you was quite the hero huh?”
“It’s nothing.”
“Sure it isn’t, many people don’t jump in front of a bullet risking their own life.” Hovering her hand over his chest, she placed a gentle kiss on his scar. The only reason she knew the exact location was because of Hana and Olivia informing her of his injuries. Riley had insisted on returning, but they advised against it as he was in an rocky relationship with Kiara at the time.
“I lost you, maybe I thought that the risk was worth taking- I had nothing left.” He whispered in her ear- his hot whiskey breath lingered around her neck. Moving a stray strand of her hair behind her ear, they both stood frozen, fixated on each other. Seeing him gulp as he admired her, she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him closer. Their foreheads brushing, neither wanting to regret what could potentially happen. His hands went around her petite frame, effortlessly lifting her on to the mahogany desk. Caressing her cheeks, his gentle touch was deja vu from the night of the Coronation. Leaning down he had nothing to lose, if she wanted to punch him she could, if she wanted to kiss him back- this complicated things. Moaning into the kiss, it felt as if the world around them had melted immediately- nothing like when she kissed Harry. In the back of her mind, she felt guilty as she was engaged, but in this moment in time she felt lust towards the man who instantly stole her heart in Cordonia. Breaking the kiss, she looked at him feeling breathless- as she did that last time she saw him all those years ago.
“Please don’t marry him.”

“Please don’t marry him.” Drake sighed regretting saying this. “I just... I am in love with you Riley Brooks, and I can’t watch you with him... I want you to be happy... honestly I do... just give me and Cordonia another chance... then you can make your decision...”
“Drake, I’m marrying him in less than two weeks... I can’t ... I love you too... I... I should go...” Turning around she placed her engagement ring back on her finger, whilst shaking. “I haven’t stopped thinking about you since I was thrown out of the coronation Drake, here’s my number. Don’t be a stranger.” Fuck what am I doing? I don’t want to leave him. “Ri... I hope you’re happy. Don’t forget that I love you and always will do.”
Leaving the room she slid down the wall in the hallway unable to contain her emotions- almost reconsidering her actions, wanting to storm through the door and claim Drake as her own as she wanted to all those years ago. Wiping her tears, she was undecided about what her future held for her.
Drake threw the whiskey bottle against the wall as she left, feeling frustrated allowing her to walk away from him again. Believing now that it was never meant to be. The last time Drake cried was possibly when he had lost his father, years later he found himself crying over the girl he lost yet again.
*****
Eleven days after they returned to Cordonia from New York, Maxwell knocked on Liam’s study door. Usually the King would answer straight away- ignoring protocol the Lord barged through the door, immediately regretting his actions.
“Your Majesties, honestly....” Tutting and shaking his head. “Is this what they call working nowadays?”
“Maxwell! Get out of here!”
“Sorry Anna, Jesus I can practically see the baby’s head appearing...” Covering up his wife, Liam’s eyes widened a she focused his gaze towards his friend.
“Maxwell this better be important. What’s up?”
“Ohhh I’ll give you a minute to clean yourselves up... I just needed to ask a favour... rather than sex, why not try giving her a spicy curry?” Maxwell suggested- Liam grit his teeth, his wife felt him become tense. Pulling her pants back up, she jumped into his arms and passionately kissed him.
“I love you Liam, I’ll see you soon.”
“I love you too my queen.” Reaching for the scotch, he was annoyed that his friend had cockblocked him in his own private space. Sighing as taking a sip, he hoped that this was important and not nonsense.
“So?”
“Erm, I had an SOS call from blossom last night...”
“Is she okay?” Liam asked in a panic stricken tone of voice- he cared for Riley beyond words even when she disappeared out of their lives.
“I’ve been speaking to her since we left, she’s having cold feet. I can’t go to the wedding tomorrow and watch her marry someone she doesn’t want to...”
Riley was at her final dress fitting, most brides would be excited the closer it got to their wedding day- but not her. Covering the bruise up with make up, she had hoped that the dress would cover it up- which it did, luckily. The night of her kiss with Drake she returned home, Harry immediately smelt whiskey and cologne on her- in a jealous rage he grabbed her arm pleading for the truth from her, which she eventually confessed. Loosening the grip, he apologised immediately for harming her - reviving his normal personality, the one she fell in love with. Ringing Maxwell up on the way to work; she needed advise but didn’t want to inform him of the injury on her arm.
“Hey Max!” Maxwell excused himself from the table, gesturing for Olivia and Hana to follow. Ever since he found out that they had been in touch with her over the years, he had been plotting with them a way to get her back in Cordonia. Since their return, Drake had kept himself to himself- not wanting to talk to anyone no matter how hard they tried to convince him.
“Hey Blossom, how are you?”
“I’m ... erm.... I’ll be fine. How’s Drake?”
“Quiet.” The two women answered in unison.
“Hey you two. Max.... I keep breaking hearts, everyone is going to hate me. I just don’t know what to do. I want to run. I want to scream. I cry all the time.”
“Do you want me to come now?”
“No. I’ve got this stupid rehearsal dinner. Shit. I can’t do this.”
“You’re the stupid bitch who fucked her boss, got engaged to him. If you don’t want this don’t do it!” Olivia snapped, she had spent three years being frustrated with Riley’s attitude- she wasn’t exactly Drakes biggest fan but at this moment in time she knew that they were made for each other.
“Max, I’ll see you in a couple of days- I expect a good speech at the wedding. Love you all.”
After reiterating the conversation on the phone, Maxwell’s eyes pleaded with his friend- the King, to help him. “So what favour do you need?”
“I need the jet... for a runaway car- well plane- well jet... you know what I mean.”
“And what if she marries him?”
“Then I’ll be travelling back in luxury your Majesty- but you know how persistent I am...”
“I hope you succeed in bringing her back. Take Glen with you. I’d suggest Bastien, but I’ll need him here.”
“Yes Sir. House Beaumont will revive.” I hope so, Liam thought to himself.
*****
Riley added the finishing touches to her bridal look, unable to look at herself in the mirror- guilt for breaking Drakes heart. Drake. That’s the man she was thinking about on her wedding day to another man. Even during the rehearsal dinner, her thoughts lingered on Drake Walker- wondering what he was doing, was he thinking about her too? Providing fake smiles towards everyone that attended the rehearsal dinner, Harry had no inkling regarding Riley’s true feelings- if she learnt anything from Cordonia it was from Liam- his stoic expressions. Holding the three handwritten letters in front of her, she had an hour to make a life changing decision.
Maxwell opened the door slowly yet quietly not wanting to announce his presence, viewing her staring at her reflection in a trance- his heart broke for her.
“Surprise Blossom!” Lifting the white lacy material up, she turned towards him- tears flowing down her face uncontrollably. “You look beautiful Riley, like a princess.. you should be happy.”
“I... I can’t do this.... I can’t marry him Max...”
“Well you know what to do....”
“What?”
“Take those shoes off before you break your neck and run. I’ll race ya.” Still undecided about what to do, Maxwell knelt down- removing her shoes. “You don’t want this Ri. Don’t put yourself through anymore heartbreak. Follow your heart.”
“Can you do me a favour? Can you give these letters to Harry and Lissy?”
“Of course. Who’s the other one for?”
“Drake. If I went through with it, I needed him to know the truth.”
“Well you can give him it yourself. Then maybe have make up sex.”
“Max! We haven’t even slept together before. We’ve just kissed.”
“But I bet you had scandalous dreams about doing more with the handsome commoner?”
“Shut the fuck up- are you getting me out of this marriage or not?”
“Yes Lady Riley Of House Beaumont- I will deliver the letters. Then we run.”
*****
“Yo dude....” Maxwell shouted walked down the aisle, over dramatically bowing to the guests.
“Shouldn’t you be walking down with my bride?”
“Yeah about that... here... sorry dude but you’re just not the one for her. Nice knowing ya. No hard feelings mate, soz. See ya.” Running back up the aisle, through the echo of gasps- he knew they had to run before Harry convinced her to marry him. Entering the room, he hoped she was ready to leave.
“Whatcha doing still in your dress?”
“I can’t get the zip down... fuck it. Let’s go, I’ve been looking at flights.....”
“Don’t bother, we are travelling in style- the jets waiting quick!” Grabbing her arm, she stopped him.
“I need my things Max.”
“Why do you think I was late? Glen broke into your house and literally threw everything into boxes.” Before Riley could react, he grabbed her hand again- leading her out of the hotel. Running into the middle of the road- he hoped a cab would stop.
“Max!”
“What?”
“You’re going to get yourself killed!”
“But it worked it... so it’s all okay... jump in blossom.”
*****
After a long flight, they arrived back in Cordonia- Riley’s hair had become slightly dishevelled but Maxwell still believed she was still beautiful. Laying on his chest during the flight- he was eager to text Drake immediately, but decided against it. Feeling smug with himself for wedding crashing, he couldn’t wait to see everyone’s expression when he walked in with Riley.
Glen opened the door of the SUV when they arrived at Ramsford- Riley had fallen asleep again, deciding to carry her he was grateful that she was as light as a feather.
“Honey I’m home!” Maxwell shouted, laughing to himself. Walking into the lounge, he saw all their friends look gobsmacked that the spare heir, the ‘dopey’ friend had succeeded.
“What have you done to her? Drugged her?”
“Jet lag... why would I drug her Liv? Shh... she’s waking up... blossom? Welcome home baby.” Bertrand knelt down, he never believed in Riley during the social season but he was glad that she was home.
“Hello Lady Riley. Welcome back.” Helping her sit up, she rubbed her eyes- removing the remainder of sleep. Still wearing her engagement ring, looking at it made her for the first time feel guilty. “Thanks Bertrand. Nice to see you all.” Noticing that Drake wasn’t there she felt slightly disappointed but didn’t blame him one bit.
“Lady Riley, I’d like to introduce you to Queen Anna- my wife.”
“Hi Anna, Erm your Majesty. It’s so lovely to finally meet you.”
“And you too. I’ve heard so much about you. All these lot ever do is talk about the infamous Riley. Especially Drake.” Providing her with a soft smile, Riley tried to ignore the fact that she mentioned his name. Noticing Liam and Anna hold each other tightly yet lovingly, Riley in a way was glad with how the past events occurred.
“Well I did cause quite a stir during my short time here.. I’m just going to get a drink of water, have a wander around. Get my bearings again.” Maxwell was about to become her shadow until Olivia pulled him back down.
“What the fuck Olivia?”
“She needs this time alone...” Emphasising the word alone, everyone but Maxwell knew what she was referring to.
****
After helping herself to a glass of water, her mind led her to the ballroom. Closing her eyes, her memories from the infamous Beaumont bash rushed through her mind.
Welcome to the Beaumont Bash... you’ll recognise some of these fine floral arrangements as yours...
Brooks... you look...
Yes?
Ready for the party. Everything here really came together.
I know, right? Though... you don’t look like you’re dressed for the occasion.
You don’t like this look? This shirts clean.
I guess that’s the most I should expect. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you dress up for these fancy events. It might be a nice change of pace.
Eh. Fashion is subject. Besides, people are here to see the prince, not me.
“Not everyone was here to see Liam. I wonder if Maxwell wants a replay of truth or dare tonight? If I was stranded on a deserted island, where I’d never see anyone or any civilisation ever again- I’d always choose Drake.” Laughing at the memory, she raised her glass into the air- to friendship.
“Be honest Brooks, you just want me there so I’m suffering as much as you are.” Turning around following the location of the voice, she believed that she was hallucinating. Seeing him leaning against the wall, folding his arms wearing that infamous smirk- she placed the water on the windowsill.
“Mostly just to see how you’d look in a grass skirt.” Both deciding to walk towards each other, closing the distance- Riley jumped into his arms holding him tightly. Leaning down kissing her, it somehow wasn’t the same as before. In his mind, this time someone had actually chosen him or so he hoped. Parting away from the brief reunion kiss- they stared at one another longingly, neither knowing what to do next. Drake still held her protectively and leaned back in- their lips crashing together, their tongues battling against each other’s, both fighting for dominance. Placing her back on the ground, he pulled her flush towards him- laying her head on his broad chest, she listened to the rhythm of his heartbeat increasing.
“I knew you’d change your mind. I knew you’d come.”

Cordonian Wags (can’t believe I haven’t posted since December 😱)
The Apples do not need anymore drama within the club- it looks as though Walker is arguing with his manager.
It’s such a shame that such a good match has come to this- I wonder what the argument is about? Walker has played well, but I’ve seen that he hasn’t been on the ball- get it?
Good pun- yes, even though he’s scored a hat trick his eyes have been scrutinising elsewhere around the stadium.
“Get back on the pitch, Walker!” Bertrand snapped towards Drake, he hated being stern towards him as he was his brother in law- but for some reason he was jeopardising the game.
“No!”
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me Bertrand. Riley’s not well.... I saw her run off...she needs me.”
“She’s just been sick. This match is important... is she pregnant?”
“No! And Riley is more important to me than a stupid match....”
“Tell me what’s up with her, then we can determine what is more important!” She’s got cancer you fucking moron.
“Just take me off, I’ve done enough in this match....” Bertrand grabbed Drake by the collar- his grip was tight, not knowing what had got into him- he witnessed the team walk over attempting to calm the situation down.
“Get the fuck off of me Bertrand! I quit!”

One Temptation
Drake pressed the button in the elevator, taking him up to the highest floor. Walking towards the desk, the receptionist looked Drake up and down- wondering who he was and what his intentions were.
“I’m here to see Mr Rhys. Before you ask, no- I haven’t got an appointment.”
“Name?”
“Just tell him his worse nightmare is paying him a visit..” Panic was written across the woman’s face, leaning closer towards her desk- her hand hovered over the security button. “Just tell him, it’s Drake.”
Hello Mr Rhys, you have a visitor. His name is Drake.
Hanging up, she explained that Liam would be with them momentarily. Sitting down on the leather chair, Drake was unsure how Liam would react to seeing him- would he throw him out? Would he play mind games?
“Drake. It’s nice to see you.” Not. “Follow me into my office.” Drake followed his instructions, as the two men walked into the room. Liam poured them both a drink, however Drake politely rejected. Not knowing if Liam could have potentially added poison to it as revenge.
“What can I do for you? I never thought I’d see the day that you’d pay me a visit voluntarily.”
“Trust me, I don’t want to be here. I despise you. Have you seen or heard from Riley?”
“No. Why would I hear from her? She wanted to send me to prison for raping her.” Hearing that word, Drake grit his teeth- knowing that Liam was still in denial with his past actions.
“Well you did do that. Listen, you probably know her better than any of us. We need your help. She ran away, she left me in Texas.” Liam laughed in Drakes face, just picturing Riley riding off into the sunset wearing a cowboy hat.
“What did you do?” He asked Drake, assuming he was the reasoning behind her disappearance- from past experience he should know how her mind ticked. She did the same when he hurt her.
“I did nothing, my mom and aunt Leona spoke to her. Then she went cold towards me, and was gone. Do you know anywhere that she could have gone?” Liam now knew the reasoning behind her departure- he was the reason why. Instead of acting like a dick, he felt empathy towards everyone who was looking for her- guilt for his past actions.
“Bianca, this is Liam Rhys- a friend of Drakes.” Bianca recognised the name immediately- clearing her throat, she provided a fake posh accent.
“Hello, Sir. How may I help?”
“Has Drake arrived in Texas yet? His flatmate was just wondering but he’s broken his phone.”
“No, not yet. I assume he should be here shortly. I’ll get him to ring you once he arrives.”
“Okay, thank you Mrs Walker. I hope the prostitute he is in a relationship with doesn’t ruin your families reputation. Have a good day.”

Hold my girl
Freya stormed out of the ballroom, not knowing why. Both her and Drake had confessed their feelings towards each other in New York, they had both agreed to a long distance relationship. So, to see him so close to the mystery woman was like a stab to the heart.
What am I even doing here? She muttered to herself.
“Freya!” Ignoring him, she ran off to her room- not looking back as she wiped her tears. Liam has suggested going to speak to her instead along with Maxwell for moral support, whilst drake took the time to ‘chill out’ before he put his foot in his mouth again.
“Blossom?” Maxwell said softly, as the two men waited for her to answer the door. “Lady Freya, we just want to make sure that you are okay?”
Opening the door, the two of them had sorrow in their eyes- both pulling her towards them for a group hug.
“I’m sorry. Liam, stop calling me lady please. I’m not in your court anymore. I’m just an American nurse now. Not a suitor, or a Duchess, or a Cordonian.”
“Frey, you are a Cordonian even if not officially- you’re a Beaumont, always will be. That woman...”
“Don’t Max... I don’t want to hear it. I thought we had something good- was all the words he said to me a lie? Did he use me for sex? I don’t know what to think. It was Drake who suggested the long distance thing- insisting it would work because he loves me. Maybe he should have just stayed as a jerk!” The two men knew that Drake wouldn’t hurt her, Maxwell soon had a smile appear on his face- a mischievous look, that look made Liam’s mind work overtime, wondering what the lord was thinking.
“Freya, grab some things and meet me in my room. Slumber party time, Beaumont’s only- sorry, Liam. No invite for you.”
“I’m busy anyway, no need for an apology. Goodnight Freya, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Kissing her on the cheek, Maxwell mimicked the king’s actions before following him out of the room.
A couple of hours had passed, and there was no sign of Freya. Maxwell just assumed that she had fallen asleep- walking out of his room towards hers, he noticed her door was slightly ajar.
“Frey?” Scrutinising the room, his heart sunk as realisation hit him like a ton of bricks.
She’s gone.

Return to New York
Liam shouted for the guard to allow his visitors into his study- turning to face them he was shocked as to why the familiar person was here, and not with Riley.
“Daniel. It’s nice to see you again.” Is he here visiting? Like on a vacation? These questions were soon knocked out of mind as he heard the tiny patter of footsteps enter the room. Libby? Lydia? Lily? Fuck what’s her name again? What’s she doing here?
“I wish I could say the same, your Majesty. I’m sorry to disturb you. Do you know where Riley is? I can’t seem to get in touch with her.”
“I’m not sure of her exact location, but I have an inkling of where that might be. I don’t mean to sound rude, but why is she here? Shouldn’t she be with her father?” Daniel sighed, not knowing how to explain the reason for the impromptu visit. Asking the guard to escort the young girl out- he didn’t want to upset her anymore than she was already.
“Lissy, she lost her father. When Riley ditched him at the wedding- he became drunk, he got into his car.... he had a crash, and didn’t survive. He was upset, humiliated that Riley couldn’t talk to him herself. Lissy has no one, she’s going to go into care if Riley....”
“If Riley what?” Liam interrupted, he had an inkling about what Daniel was going to say- but really hoped that he was incorrect.

We Belong
My dearest Evie, I’m so sorry for all the pain I caused you. I always loved you, I was stupid to let a diamond like you go- all for the sake of nothing. I had hoped in time that you’d forgive me, I killed the man who tried to rape you- the man who you would cry in your sleep about. Stupidly I believed once you knew my true identity that we could get back together. I was part of a troupe, going against the crown- Bianca and Anton had reasons. I didn’t. I was just in it for the money- the money that I would have used to shower you with gifts, to pay for your dream wedding that we imagined. I didn’t mean to stab you, Bianca pushed you into me- id never hurt you again. I still don’t know if you survived or not, no one will inform me. I was an idiot. I can’t live without you knowing that it was always you- if you survived, I hope you find true happiness. Happiness that you deserve. Liam is in danger, Anton goes by a fake name known as Justin. He is Riley’s press secretary. I need you to tell someone, to protect my old friend and his family. I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done. But now I’ve told you this, I have no choice but to end my life. Toby xo

The Greatest Show
“Ri?” Amber questioned, assuming she was hallucinating- seeing her friend stood in front of her. Liam held onto Riley’s waist, looking adorably towards her.
“Surprise!” Riley shouted enthusiastically, waving her hands in the air.
“I’m confused, what the hell are you doing here? Why are you so close together? Liam have you forgotten about Olivia?”
“I’ve no got amnesia, Amber. Olivia has been in a relationship with Leo, behind my back. I’m no angel, as I fell in love with Riley whilst I was supposed to be courting Liv.” Amber was trying to allow this information to sink in, trying to figure out what exactly was going to occur due to the burden being her friend.
“Well I’m happy to see you Ri, lets hope you don’t get stabbed...” Riley’s eyes widened, but Liam laughed knowing exactly what she was referring to- or who.
“I’ll see you both tomorrow? I’ve got one tall, dark, handsome commoner waiting for me...” Making her way out of the room, she quickly turned to the two of them. “Oh Ri, thanks for bringing Jackson- I’ve missed him so much, and he’s missed his Mom like you said on the note.” Before Riley could react, Amber had shot out of the door. But I didn’t bring Jackson.
Exiting the room, Amber couldn’t wait to get back to Drake- mainly to explain the new court gossip to him. Feeling arms go around her waist, she smiled- turning around, that smile soon disappeared in a flash.
“Thought you’d escape me, did you?
*****
Hold on (follow up)
“Brooks....” Feeling like this was a waste of time, Drake decided that the best option was to walk away, as she wasn’t responding. Jackson placed a hand onto his father’s shoulder, suggesting that Drake should leave. Listening to his son’s advise, he left in a swift motion- frustrated that he couldn’t persuade her to come out of her hovel and just talk.
“Aunt Ri?” Jackson said softly as he knocked on the door. Riley knew she was being stubborn whenever a visitor would knock on the door- but for some reason she could never ignore her children, or her friends children.
“Jackson.” Smiling at his auntie, he pulled her in for a hug. “What can I do for you?”
“Have a walk? Or just a little talk with me? We all miss you, and want to help you through it. Dad just wants to grieve with you. You could help each other?”
“You’re only twenty one Jackson, you should be out with your friends- enjoying life. Don’t take a minute for granted. Loving each day as if it’s your last.” Listening to her words, he knew what she was referring to. His heart sunk, the usual poised Queen stood in front of him absolutely broken. “I miss him so much Jackson, and I miss your mom too. Each day that goes by, doesn’t get any easier. I need to be strong for Ayah, Louis and Ellie but truth be told- they are so much stronger than I am.”

“Did you miss me gentlemen? Or did you just miss the cronuts?” Riley asked in a sarcastic manner- even though deep down she was nervous. It had been three years since the Coronation- three years since she got on that plane back to New York and never returned to Cordonia.
“Little blossom!” Maxwell screeched, Jumping out of the chair- he knocked the drinks over- not giving a damn about the consequences. Running closer to her, he picked her up- swung her around as if she was on the waltzers.
“I’ve missed you so much! Do you really hate us that much to go awol...” Riley looked at him with sorrow in her eyes, not knowing how to respond to him. Thinking up of a shit excuse to use- she was shocked by Maxwell checking her left hand and eyeing up her body.
“I’ve missed you too- why are you looking at my hand? And my body?”
“You look fabulous to say you’ve popped a baby out-who’s the lucky fella? The baby daddy? Are you getting married?” Riley looked at Daniel who just shrugged his shoulders, then focused her gaze towards Liam and Drake who both looked at her with their jaws agape.
“Max, I don’t know what you’re on about? I’m definitely single, and I’ve definitely not ‘popped’ any kids out- thank you.”
“But Daniel said....”
“But Daniel couldn’t finish what he was about to say... I was going to say was that she worked at the Hard Rock cafe down the road, but it’s part time. Her main job... she’s got a kid who she looks after during the day- for extra income.” Riley looked at Daniel understanding how Maxwell would get his wires crossed- he was never one to let people finish what they wanted to say.
“Oh... Maxi. If I had a baby, you’d be the first one to know. So what are you guys doing here?”
“Maxwell wanted to feel close to you.” Riley snapped her head towards the voice- the last man she kissed. The last man she felt anything for. Sure she had feelings for Liam- but there was something about Drake that she couldn’t shake away.
“And he dragged you two along. Typical Max.” Maxwell shrugged his shoulders before pulling the two men into a bromance hug. “Congratulations by the way Liam, I’m so happy for you.”
“Thank you Lady Riley. It’s good to see you.” Liam stood up to hug her, the last time he was this close to her was in the maze when he promised that he would choose her- even though there were doubts from her side about her being his choice, due to her lingering feelings towards Drake.
“So, are you having a Prince or Princess?”
“We’ve decided to keep it a surprise.”
“Li if you knew, we could have gone on a shopping spree... I told you it was a bad idea keeping the gender a secret.”
“Why don’t you guys go shopping, you can buy unisex clothing.” Riley suggested.
“Come with us Little blossom?” Maxwell’s eyes pleaded with her, he wasn’t ready to say goodbye just yet.
“I’ve got to go to work. Sorry Max. Why don’t you all go shopping then come for a meal, I’ll give ya a discount.”
“Deal.” Maxwell agreed without confirming with the other two men. If they didn’t want to join him, Max wouldn’t force them. Personally for him, he was going to spend every second he could with Riley- his ‘adopted’ sister.
****
The men went shopping, to say it was for Liam’s child the only person excited was Maxwell- hoping to prove that he could win the best ‘uncle’ award. Drake remained silent throughout most of the shopping trip- his thoughts were about Riley on a constant loop. The last conversation he had with her, the regret of not following her to New York- ignoring Liam’s advise regarding her ‘safety’.
Yeah, well... I guess maybe I found someone worth impressing.
Drake...
If only for tonight.. anyway, I’m glad we were able to have a few minutes out here together. Thanks for the drink, Brooks.
I wanted to ask... it seemed like you were about to say something earlier?
I was just going to say that I was wrong. No matter what happens tonight... crown or no crown, engaged or... not... you’re still you.
Weren’t you just telling me how I’m one of them now?
I was being an idiot. I shouldn’t have said that. I knew it as soon as the words were out of my mouth. You didn’t deserve that.
Drake is that as close as you come to an apology?
You don’t let me get away with anything do you? Lady Riley Brooks, I’m sorry I was out of line.
Thank you.
It’s just in that moment, when I saw you at the ball... you reminded me of Savannah. How she was the last night we went out with nobles at that party. She was so happy in her fancy gown, with her hair all done up. So hopeful. She lit up the entire room. She really believed she’d made it. That she was one of them. And I still don’t know what happened to her, what made her leave. But it was bad. It was something that broke her. I’ll never forget how devastated she looked the day before she disappeared. She looked hopeless. Like she’d given up. And when I looked at you tonight...I couldn’t stop myself from imagining the same thing happening to you. This place seems shiny and wonderful, but the truth is, it breaks people, Brooks. I don’t ever want to see you broken.
Drake.. that’s still no excuse for how you’ve been acting.
I know. I’m sorry. Hell, Brooks. My life would’ve been so much easier if I could’ve just hated you. I....
What were you thinking just now?
I was thinking... if this is the last time I’m going to be alone with you before you’re an engaged woman... I’d be a damned fool to not kiss you.
Drake... kiss me now.
“Drake? Are you okay?” Liam asked softly, noticing his friend was in a trance.
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You just seem quiet, since we left Riley.”
“I’m fine Li. Honest.”
“What were you thinking just now?”
“I... I kissed her the night of your coronation. I’m so sorry Liam. I know you were going to choose her. The last three years all I’ve thought about is what would have happened if... if she... I’m sorry Li.”
“You kissed Blossom? Why didn’t you tell us? Is this why you and Kiara never worked?”
“I like Kiara I do... but more as a friend. With Brooks...”
“With Lady Riley you had feelings that were more than a friend?” Liam asked smiling at his friend who gulped before nodding his head.
“It’s not too late Drake, hey my spontaneous trip brought us back to her.” Maxwell bowed in front of the men, proud of his ‘genius’ impromptu crazy ideas. Patting himself on the back overdramatically - he knew that fate was occurring.
“If you feel that way.. don’t let her go. She wouldn’t have kissed you if there were no feelings from her side. I’m not cross Drake, so don’t apologise.” Liam’s encouraging words made Drake think, he didn’t want to make a fool of himself jumping straight into where they left off. Arriving at the Hard Rock Cafe, they were seated by a waiter- Riley noticed them settle in, smiling and waving at them all.
“My names Riley, and I’ll be your waitress for the night. I assume you’ll want; a sex on the beach for Lord Beaumont, a scotch for his majesty and a whiskey for Sir Walker?”
“No need for the titles Riley.” Drake said smirking at her, looking confused at him she paused writing the order down. He had never called her Riley- instead he used her surname as a defence mechanism.
“Are you feeling okay Drake? Calling me Riley?” She playfully nudged his shoulder, before staring into his eyes. Both of them focusing on each other- frozen. Liam and Maxwell noticed the spark between the two of them.
“Blossom, I think we will just have three burgers- whichever one you suggest.”
“Uh sure. I’ll put your order in gentlemen.” Watching Riley walk away, the two of them instantly looked at Drake.
“What?”
“Go and speak to her, whilst she makes the drinks.” Liam encouraged, watching Riley nervously place her hair behind her ear- then noticing Drake looking at her also.
“I think I’ll need a bit of Dutch courage before I speak to her like that.”
“No you don’t. The way she just looked at you.... the way you looked at her.... there was something there.” Maxwell pouted his lips- impersonating a kiss. Drake shook his head, clearing his throat- he robotically walked towards the bar. Rehearsing in his mind what to say to her, he was shaking- not knowing why.
“Hey Brooks, how are you?” No that’s stupid.
“Hi. You’re still as beautiful as I remember.” No too upfront.
“You look as if you’ve settled back okay.” For fuck sake Drake, it’s just Brooks. It’s just Riley.
“Hey, you do know that the waitress is supposed to bring your drinks over right?”
“Yeah, I know... I ... why did you decide to not come back?” Fuck. Why did you ask that?
“I... I just thought you’d all be better off without me. I already caused one scandal, I didn’t want to cause another.”
“You didn’t cause that. That was all Tariqs fault, not yours. We all wanted you to stay. Liam cleared your name. You could have come back then.” Sighing, she didn’t know what to say- would they accept her apology for leaving abruptly and losing contact?
“Drake... what’s she like? What’s Anna like?”
“She’s an amazing Queen. Liam is smitten. Why do you ask?” Does this mean she still feels something for Liam?
“No reason, if I came back when Max and Bertrand tried to beg me at the airport- he wouldn’t have met her. He wouldn’t be happily married with an heir on the way.”
“Honestly they are crazy in love- it’s sickening.” He laughed, Riley mimicked his action. “What did you mean another scandal by the way?”
“If Liam was to choose me that night, it would have caused another scandal.... I love Liam, I really do but as a friend. I...” Biting her bottom lip, she knew that if this was the last time seeing them- she needed to come clean, place all her feelings on the table. “I would have caused another scandal- because I slowly fell in love with someone else. How’s Kiara by the way?”
“Erm... she’s okay I suppose... why?”
“Liv and Hana.... they... they kept in touch with me- keeping me up to date with court gossip. You both began dating so you should know how she is.”
“They kept in touch with you? They knew we were going out of our minds looking for you.”
“Why are you avoiding the question about Kiara?”
“Because there’s nothing to explain. Yes we began dating shortly after you left. But it’s not like that....”
“It’s not like what? It’s none of my business. Go and sit down marshmallow. I’ll bring the drinks over.” Jumping over the bar, he pulled her close to him.
“Drake you’re going to get me the sack! Go and sit down!”
“So what? You can come back to Cordonia that way.”
“I’m quite content where I am thank you.”
“Brooks, you belong in Cordonia... Jeeze you belong there more than I do.”
“I don’t deserve anything Drake... please go and sit with Li and Max.”
“Don’t you deserve happiness too? Who did you fall in love with?”
“It doesn’t matter Drake. Excuse me I have to work.”
“Riley... wait...” turning her head towards him she wondered if he was being sincere with his nice attitude.
“The reason myself and Kiara didn’t work was because of you. She knew that I was in love with you.”
