Trump Tells NRA He’s Taking U-Turn on UN Arms Trade Treaty

President Donald Trump spoke today to the NRA Institute for Legislative Action leadership forum in Washington, D.C., and used the opportunity to announce he was reversing course on American foreign policy regarding gun control. Pulling out a notebook, he told the crowd: “As part of this decision, I will sign right now, in front of a lot of witnesses, a lot—there are a lot of witnesses—a message asking the Senate to discontinue the treaty ratification process and to return the now rejected treaty right back to me in the Oval Office where I will dispose of it. By taking these actions, we are reaffirming that American liberty is sacred and that American citizens live by American laws, not the laws of foreign countries.” After he signed the document, he showed it off to the audience, which erupted in cheers and applause. Afterward, he threw the pen he signed the message with to a member of the audience. Earlier in the speech, however, the president addressed the continued attempts by Democrats to remove him from office: “Every day of my administration, we are taking power out of Washington, D.C., and returning it to the American people, where it belongs. You see it now better than ever with all of the resignations of bad apples—they're bad apples. They tried for a coup; that didn't work out so well … and I didn't need a gun for that one.” The president went on to highlight the improved condition of the country under his leadership. He went on to say: “America's future has never been brighter and yet Democrats have never been angrier—especially now that their collusion delusion has been exposed to the world as a complete and total fraud. It's been the greatest political hoax ever in our country.” Seemingly demonstrating what he had to say, just as the president was walking up to the podium, someone in the crowd threw what appears to be a smartphone toward him. Thankfully, the device landed nowhere near him. Police quickly identified the assailant with help from those standing nearby and removed him from the crowd. The person was arrested, and the president gave his speech without further incident. If Obama is so outraged by the divisiveness sparked by the numerous sources of information online, why is the propaganda he intends to produce to be available over a streaming service rather than traditional broadcast? So apparently he can provide his “alternative facts” but it is an outrage for Alex Jones to do so.

The winter 2018 edition of PETA Global is heralding the lawsuit the front group filed that granted intellectual property rights to a macaque that took a selfie with a camera set up by a photographer. Will the next time an ape hurls poo across its enclosure qualify for a government arts grant? The brief write up goes on to celebrate how the photographer was strongarmed into a settlement forcing the surrender of a percentage of the proceeds generated from the image to a number of wildlife charities and how other wildlife photographers are being intimidated into making similar donations. In the future, will you be required to get your dog or cat to sign notarized releases before uploading their images to social media? Too bad PETA is not as concerned about the animals euthanized in its care just so the creatures wouldn’t be forced to endure the indignity of having their basic needs catered to by adoring and dutiful human beings.

Propagandists at Good Morning America warn in an editorial posted on the program’s website “Alabama Senate Race Highlights That New Tribalism Threatens Our Democracy”. The piece observes that a group of Alabama voters have decided that ideology and party are more important than integrity and the common good. But in rejecting Moore now for decades largely over his defense of the Ten Commandments, these media elites are the ones that established the precedent of downplaying the existence of a morality beyond that of the group or “tribe” (as it is termed in a denigrating way in this segment). But aren’t these as dedicated to the so-called “tribe” as the consideration that trumps all others? For example, Barack Obama was elected primarily for being Black. The masses were directed to back Hillary Clinton simply because she was a woman. And no one is supposed to say a peep critical of Black Lives Matter despite the propensity of those in that movement to loot beauty salons for haircare products and burn other businesses to the ground in the name of social justice.

A Harris Poll concludes 84% of Americans hold the opinion “no gun under 21”. Why don’t the same numbers oppose enlistment in the military or enrollment in Select Service below that age threshold?

In a SermonAudio homily, it was correctly warned that many of aspects of life can be pursued with such zeal that we fail in one’s service to God. To bad this admonition was not applied to organized religion as well.

World educators supportive of students skipping class in opposition to the Second Amendment be as supportive if students walked out in favor of Confederate war memorials, the Tea Party movement, or school prayer? An alleged study indicates that a significant number of women are demanding that a man be at least six feet tall before they would considering dating them. Even when you meet their height requirements, they still aren’t likely to go out with you. And if women demanding a man meet certain physical requirements in order to be worthy of companionship, what is so wrong then with men insisting upon sufficient bosom birth, an exacting hip to waist ratio, or a specific age parameter (with some men preferring younger while other skew older) in order for a woman to be worthy of consideration?

The punishment for the teacher feeding a puppy to a snapping turtle in front of his students ought to be to force him to put his own hand in the snapping turtle’s mouth. If he loses his hand, he should have thought about that before feeding the puppy to the snapping turtle.

Trump’s suggestion of a “Space Force” to handle extraplanetary military operations has allowed for a good laugh across social media. However, the concept is less ridiculous than NASA conferences held were the attendees ponder the question if Jesus died for Klingons not from the standpoint of whether extraterrestrials have souls but rather as way for academics to bash Christians for holding up cultural development and where Levar Burton and Nichelle Nichols were no doubt paid significant honoraria to make a public appearance.

In response to the hordes of students skipping class in opposition to the Second Amendment, Nancy Pelosi said no one's political survival is more important than the survival of the nation's children. Unless, of course, if the child is still in the womb.

The Washington Post is celebrating the lone student at one school that walked out of class in opposition to the Second Amendment. Would this liberal rag defend students that remained in class in support of the inalienable right to bear arms?

A brat demonstrating against the Second Amendment remarked that you should not be allowed to own an "assault rifle" unless you can articulate a reason why. Shouldn't the same apply to cellphones and free birth control?

Nancy Pelosi has decreed that the prototypes of Trump’s proposed Great Wall Of America are too high for civilized society. If the Congressional leader ever watched “Pacific Rim”, she would have probably applauded the interdimensional monsters busting through the barrier to lay waste to what remained of human civilization. But in all seriousness, if high barricades are an offense to democratic values, does she intend to advocate for the removal of the ones surrounding the Capitol? More importantly, does she intend to tear down any fences surrounding her properties or to leave the doors unlocked at night so vagrants can traipse around at their own leisure?

Hispanosupremacist Jorge Ramos says that he is now having the worst time of his life in his 34 years in the United States. He is always free to return to Third World poverty any time that he so desires.

The Syfy drama Krypton is not without potential. However, it is not as enjoyable as Smallville or Supergirl. One has to be really steeped in Superman lore to follow what is going on and the English accents of the actors don't help either. As a family member not as familiar with superheroes and comics confided, this Krypton certainly looks different than the one from the TV shows and movies. Often Superman's home world is depicted as almost heavenly with crystalline architecture of an almost cathedral like appearance. However, this world simply looks rundown. In many versions of the Superman story, Krypton is left to its fate as a result of a scientific establishment too mired in its own procedures to admit to the obvious. Yet this version seems to want to take the narrative in a bit of another direction subtly anti-Christian as the religious elite deny the existence of life beyond their world to the point of persecuting those advocating on behalf of the idea. To emphasize the point, the primary religious leader, the voice of Rao, is depicted in a multi-faced mask reminiscent of an image from church history intended to illustrate the Trinity.

The cover story of the April 2018 issue of Sojourner’s Magazine is titled, “How Evangelicals Became White: For much of American evangelical history spreading the Gospel meant spreading Whiteness”. Does Sojourner’s stop to explain and, even more importantly, lament how the so-called “mainline churches” are probably even “Whiter” than those of the Evangelicals being denigrated in this propaganda? Are Black denominations being condemned for being overwhelmingly Black? Is the Roman Catholic Church ever condemned in the pages of this publication for abetting in the violation of U.S. immigration law?

Revolutions are seldom satisfied accomplishing the initial stated objective. These movements eventually become increasingly strident. Once those with wandering hands or raunchy mouths (as determined by feminists that are not so much in favor of decorum as they hate men) are removed from public life, what is to prevent assorted surveillance technologies from being deployed to eliminate the last remaining vestiges of maleness? For example, close circuit TV could be used to catch those stealing a glance of a jiggly bosom or backside strutting by. Will fit bits be required to catch men that become aroused by an alluring woman in their presence who saying nothing about it but who would be betrayed by an increased pulse or blood pressure rates?

One adolescent orator at the March For Our Lives Rally claimed to speak on behalf of “African American girls whose stories don't lead on the evening news.” In her racialist tirade, did she point out that most Black youths are shot by other Black youths with firearms not acquired or used in a manner approved by the NRA nor by the organization's membership?

A number of dimwitted waifs at the March For Our Lives rally insisted that the Constitution was outdated. So if these rabble rousers had been denied the opportunity to assemble or had their gathering disbanded at the end of police batons, tasers and tear gas, there would have been nothing wrong with that. Because the right to speak and petition for the redress of grievances is just as much part of that Constitution these activists denigrate as the Second Amendment.

Miami officials are considering a plan to allow educators strapped for rent to live at school. And you thought accounts of the sexcapades occurring in the public schools were wild before?

In calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment, does that also include the right to bear arms of the security details of retired Supreme Court Justices as well?

If former Supreme Court Justices are calling for the elimination of the Second Amendment because the constitutional provision is no longer considered socially utilitarian, what is to prevent them from issuing similar pronouncements calling for the elimination of freedom of speech and religion when those particular statutory clauses are deemed similarly subversive to public order?

If Youtube can’t be forced to allow for Conservative speech, why should Christians be compelled to bake gay wedding cakes?

If the census should not be allowed to ask if a respondent is a citizen of the United States, why on the American Community Survey was I required to answer how far I drove to work and how many toilets are in my house?

A Maryland Park and Planning Commission is holding a teen athletic competition advertised as the first annual “Hunger Games”. As a science fiction fan, I found the Hunger Games series of films a compelling and highly plausible dystopia. But it is a DYSTOPIA. That means no rational individual would want to find themselves in that situation. In spoofing the emphasis placed upon the love triangle in the story, Homer Simpson lamented, “When do we get to killing the children?” Will this be the fate of those losing these municipal competitions? For like it or not, that was the point of this fictionalized athletic spectacle as a form of social control and the only way to survive was to kill or be killed. Any bureaucrat employing this name as part of what ought to be a wholesome youth activity either doesn’t understand the point of the narrative or are hoping to manipulate the population to the point where one day such blatantly homicidal bloodsports are accepted without question.

If it is unacceptable for the government to ask who is a citizen, why is it acceptable for government to not only know how much money individuals make but also how much of that money individuals withdrawal from privately owned banks after taxes on those funds have already been paid?

For daring to comment on a public online post by gun control fanatic David Hogg, pundit Laura Ingraham has been accused of cyberbullying. But isn’t Hogg even more directly a bully? After all, is he not the one issuing threats and ultimatums if his preferred policy directives or managerial preferences are not implemented?

It was argued on the Berean Baptist Church SermonAudio podcast that, even if a “pew sitter” comes to church 52 out of 52 Sunday’s a year, they are not sufficiently demonstrating the value of the church until they sing in the choir, serve in AWANA, or play an instrument for 52 out of those 52 weeks. Would the pastoral staff be serving the 52 out of 52 weeks if there was no paycheck on the line? If showing up is not is not sufficient demonstration of devotion to Christ, perhaps they’d rather people not show up at all? Furthermore, why would anyone want to hazard the commitment necessary to hold a volunteer position in a congregation that has mentioned in previous publicly available podcasts how criteria to qualify are nowhere detailed in the pages of Sola Scriptura? Furthermore, by definition a church of a finite size only has so many teaching positions available and, given that these are non-compensated, one is under no obligation to pursue them particularly if one is not skilled in or desirous to participate in the open opportunities.

It was said in a Berean Baptist Church SermonAudio podcast that the true believers are those that serve IN the church institutional or organizational. How can one hand down a definitive ruling that those not explicitly serving under ecclesiastical scrutiny are not performing works for Christ beyond an inquisitorial gaze? Furthermore, how is what this pastoral staff is advocating little different than the blatant works righteousness of most strains of Roman Catholicism?

A Sacramento woman with her house on the real estate market is refusing to sell to any Trump supporters. It is claimed that political affiliation is not listed among the protected classifications known for rampaging in the streets and looting local businesses at the rendering of unpopular trial verdicts. As such, this would not constitute a technical act of discrimination. Fine. If this is allowed to stand, all one should need to do to get out of selling a home to minorities is to decline on the grounds that the individuals are likely Obama voters. Christian bakers wanting to avoid entanglements with gay weddings could articulate similar reasons. More importantly, given that most Americans do not necessarily wear their politics on their sleeves, what is to prevent someone from saying that they did not vote for Trump when they really did? It’s not like this inquiry is regarding one’s faith in Christ.

Chris Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist, opened the forum with a rallying cry for the association’s five million members. “They cant beat us on the facts, but if they can shame us out of the fight, they will win,” he said of the fervent gun control movement gaining steam after the Parkland massacre. “In the face of their bitter hatred, there’s never been a more critical time for us to stand tall and, by God, to stand proud.”

Cox then handed the stage over to Stephen Willeford, the NRA member credited with interrupting a shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas last year.

Some 26 parishioners died and another 20 were injured when a former Airman opened fire with an AR-15 during a late morning service. Willeford, a nearby resident, heard the gunfire and rushed across the street to intervene.

“He had an AR-15, but so did I,” he told the crowd gathered at Friday’s forum. “I’m not the bravest man in the world or anything, but I was there and I could do something. And I had to do something.”

The gunman fled the scene and Willeford pursued, eventually leading police to the suspect about 10 minutes down the road from the church.

NRA leadership presented him with a lifetime membership Friday, saying Willeford embodies the association’s “force of good” in the world.

“He is no anomaly. He is not one in a million,” Cox said. “He is one of five million. He’s one of us.”

Vice President Mike Pence

Vice President Mike Pence took the stage first, describing himself as a card-carrying NRA member and dedicated conservative.

“I’m here to tell you you have two friends in the White House,” he said. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms will not be infringed.”

Pence touted the president’s policy victories since taking office last year — boosting defense spending, funding the beginning of a border wall, protecting the balance of the Supreme Court and appointing Constitution-friendly federal judges across the nation — before promising a solution to mass shootings mindful of the Second Amendment.

‘These and too many others acts of violence shatter our families and leave our nation searching for answers,” he said. “We will continue to bring American solutions to this crisis. We will end this evil and protect our civil liberties at the same time. That’s the American way.”

He capped off his speech encouraging Cox’s rally cry, saying “Stay in the fight. Exercise all of your fundamental rights. Live out your citizenship in all the ways that make NRA one of the potent forces of good in America.”

President Donald Trump

President Trump said he was “doing the right thing” by appearing at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention in Dallas on Friday to rally the organization’s members to vote Republican in the midterm elections.

Trump’s speech waded through issues he built his campaign on — such as immigration, jobs and tax reform — but he touched on key gun issues on and off throughout the speech.

Minutes into his speech, Trump abruptly transitioned to talk about gun rights, saying “let’s talk about guns, shall we?” and argued that the consequences for cities like London, Paris and Chicago for having tough gun laws has been violence.

“It seems like if we’re going to outlaw guns like so many people want to do — Democrats … and (then) we are going to have outlaw all vans and trucks, which are the new form of terror for maniacs,” he said and added, “Let’s ban all vans, trucks cars, — let’s not sell any more cars.”

Although Republicans have control of both chambers of Congress and the White House, Trump argued they still need more. “They say we have a majority — what a majority of just one person?” he asked. “We gotta do great in 2018.”

With more Republicans, they could fill the more than 100 judge seats vacated in federal court system and other positions, such as ambassador roles. He blamed Democrats for slowing or disrupting the process.

He touched on his administration’s efforts to improve school security, an issue sparked by the killings in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead and 15 others injured. The incident spurred massive demonstration by students and victims that largely challenged the NRA’s influence. Initially, Trump made statements that contradicted solutions promoted by the NRA, but he abruptly abandoned those ideas after meeting with NRA officials.

Heading toward a close, Trump made reference to the battle of the Alamo, using the historic event to describe Texans’ feelings toward gun rights. “Like those early Texans, we will never surrender,” he said, adding “We will live and we will die free.”

NRA Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre

Wayne LaPierre serves as arguably the most visible member of NRA’s leadership team and is largely credited with advancing right-to-carry laws in more than 40 states.

He told members Friday he’s seen many attempts over the last four decades to squash the NRA, but promised the organization remains “stronger than ever” in 2018 — despite the left’s tactic of “gaslighting tragedy and exploiting victims.”

“They’re so eager to dance on NRA’s grave that they can’t recognize the undeniable truth right before their eyes,” he said. “They can’t see you — millions of good-hearted people.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said mass shootings stem not from guns, but from the culture itself.

“The problem is hearts without God. Homes without discipline. Communities without values,” he said. “In this country, we have a core value that our nation is founded on and that core value is our United States Constitution.”

Abbott said Willeford’s NRA training saved lives at Sutherland Springs — just as it does for Texans who face MS-13 gang members or home intruders.

“Even in the fog of this horrific tragedy, people in Sutherland Springs looked me in the eye and demanded I would not allow this tragedy to take their guns,” he said.

Sen. John Cornyn

Sen. John Cornyn said he wanted to reshape the conversation about the Second Amendment by making it synonymous with public safety.

“Support for the Second Amendment and support for public safety are one in the same,” he told the crowd of NRA members filling the auditorium during the organization’s annual meeting in Dallas.

Like many other speakers, he praised Steven Willeford for stopping the gunman who murdered 26 people and 20 others at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas in November. Cornyn challenged the narrative that such defensive gun uses are rare.

Recently, an unpublished paper by the Centers for Disease Control surfaced that addressed a study from the 1990s showing between 500,000 to 3 million DGUs a year. However, researchers have dismissed the results due to the ways in which the data was collected.

Sen. Ted Cruz

Five years ago, Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Chuck Grassley co-sponsored a bill alerting the Department of Justice every time a fugitive or a felon tried to buy a gun.

The Grassley-Cruz amendment, as it became, would have strengthened the federal background check system and addressed mental health concerns in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, Cruz told NRA members Friday. It received a majority vote in a Democratic-held Senate, but fell apart over a filibuster.

Fast forward to Nov. 5, 2017 when a former Airman opened fire in a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas with an AR-15 his assault convictions barred him from owning.

“Had that law passed …. he would have been in federal prison instead of in that church murdering those innocent men, women and children,” Cruz said.

During an animated 30-minute speech, Cruz retold the heroics of Stephen Willeford, who interrupted the church massacre that fateful morning armed with his own AR-15. He chased the shooter in a high-speed pursuit, ultimately leading law enforcement to the suspect’s crashed car.

In the end, Cruz blamed Democrats for targeting the wrong menace and “selling lies.”

“It’s not about hunting. Its not about target shooting. The Second Amendment is about the God given right to defend our lives, to defend our homes, to defend our families,” he said. “When the Second Amendment says shall not be infringed, it means exactly that — shall not be infringed.”

7:15 p.m.

A contingent of survivors of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting is among the thousands of marchers at a gun control rally in Denver.

Students and their supporters packed into Civic Center Park near the state Capitol for a rally Saturday afternoon before spilling out onto streets through downtown. They held signs like “The Second Amendment Needs Amending” and “Prayers are Not Enough.”

Sixteen-year-old Columbine student Kalli Honeycutt, says her mother, who survived that shooting, has drilled it into her head to always be on the lookout.

Honeycutt says she is demonstrating because she wants lawmakers to make it harder for people to get guns and cause tragedies like school shootings.

Survivors of last month’s Florida school shooting have described themselves as the “mass-shooting generation,” noting that they were born after the Columbine shooting.

High school students led thousands of protesters in Seattle on Saturday, part of a nation-wide youth movement demanding tighter gun regulation in the wake of a Florida school shooting that left 17 people dead.

Students held signs reading “Not One More” and chanted “Right now, right here, we refuse to live in fear.” Teachers protested President Donald Trump’s proposal to arm some of them in order to protect students from potential attackers.

Much of the protest was directed at the National Rifle Association.

“I want to know that they care more about lives than profit, the NRA,” said Naa’Rai Taison, a 19-year-old student at Cornish College of the Arts. “We can still hold on to our traditions without having to lose lives.”

Similar “March for Our Lives” events were held at other cities across the country Saturday by demonstrators spurred to action in the wake of school shootings and other gun violence.

Dueling rallies were held at the same time in Helena, Montana, by gun-control and gun-rights advocates.

At the gun-control rally, two teen sisters who helped organize the protest said they felt hope for the first time after the Parkland, Florida shooting survivors advocated for change.

“Finally, somebody was doing something about it, except it wasn’t who you’d expect — it was us,” Mariah Thomas, 17, said to cheers. “It was students my own age who decided they wanted to put an end to gun violence.”

Across town outside the Montana Capitol, a smaller crowd of gun-rights advocates swore that no outsiders would dictate gun laws in Montana. One speaker, Montana State University student Joey Chester, drew boos when he referenced the other protest.

“If something went wrong there, the first people to show up are going to be people with guns,” Chester said.

The gun-control advocates gathered in Montana were among hundreds of thousands rallying nationwide at “March for Our Lives” events on Saturday. The events are intended to rally support for stricter gun control laws in the wake of school shootings.

Pro-gun activists held counter-protests at some cities across the western United States on Saturday, even as hundreds of thousands of people rallied at gun control events at the same time.

In Salt Lake City, Utah about 500 pro-gun marchers walked to the state Capitol building, advocating for fortified schools and more armed teachers. An hour later, about 6,000 anti-gun violence demonstrators marched the same route in a call for more gun regulations.

About two dozen gun-rights supporters staged a counter-protest in Phoenix, Arizona, holding flags and sometimes challenging opponents to debate gun issues.

They were far outnumbered, however — the Arizona Department of Public Safety estimates that 15,000 people attended the “March for Our Lives” gun-control rally at the state Capitol. Two of the student organizers of the event opened it by urging young people to register to vote and boot out officeholders who won’t act.

Chin high and tears streaming, Florida school shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez stood silent in front of thousands gathered for the “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C.

She continued to stand silently as a few crowd members shouted out support. She remained silent as tentative chants broke out. Her silence continued as those attending also fell quiet, many weeping.

The gripping moment stretched for 6 minutes and 20 seconds, the amount of time Gonzalez said it took a school shooter to kill 17 people and wound many others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last month.

Gonzalez is one of several teens from the school to become gun control activists in the wake of the shooting. Their efforts have galvanized youth nationwide, with hundreds of thousands attending similar rallies across the country.

Gonzalez wrapped up the Washington, D.C. rally with some homework for those who demonstrated nationwide:

“One final plug,” she said. “Get out there and vote.”

3:15 p.m.

Fifteen-year-old Brooke Solomon led thousands of demonstrators in a march through the downtown streets of Detroit. Ten-year-old Jack Thorne attended a similar event in Atlanta, Georgia with his mom. South Salem High School student Allison Hmura told protesters in Salem, Oregon that students shouldn’t have to learn to “duck and cover.”

The youths were among hundreds of thousands at “March for Our Lives” events nationwide calling for stricter gun control in response to school shootings and gun violence.

“I’m here marching for the thousands of under-represented black and brown kids, especially in Detroit,” said Solomon, who wants background checks in all gun sales. “I’m looking for tougher gun laws and legislation that includes banning semi-automatic and assault weapons.”

In Atlanta, Thorne held aloft a sign reading “Guns Don’t Kill People. Ummm… Yes They Do,” as he described how he and his classmates recently underwent active shooter drills in school.

And Hmura called on the nearly 2,400 people gathered at the Salem rally to fight for change.

“There cannot be two sides to our safety in school where we should be learning, growing and making friends — not learning how to duck and cover,” Hmura said.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio said in a prepared statement Saturday that he supports demonstrators’ rights to march at anti-gun rallies across the country, but called for activists to find common ground with opponents.

“While protests are a legitimate way of making a point, in our system of government, making a change requires finding common ground with those who hold opposing views,” the Republican from Florida said.

Rubio’s district includes Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed in a school shooting last month. He said that a ban on bump stocks (used to make guns fire more rapidly), improvements to the gun background check system and other efforts were achieved by finding common ground with those who don’t want certain gun bans.

“And finding common ground is what it will take to pass our red flag law so we can take guns away from dangerous people,” Rubio said.

Hundreds of thousands of people in cities across the United States are attending “March for Our Lives” rallies, calling on lawmakers to enact legislation to help stop school shootings and reduce gun violence.

Thousands of people are flooding the streets of downtown Los Angeles to demand stricter gun laws in the U.S.

The rally was one of several being held across California and the United States on Saturday.

Protesters held signs and chanted as they marched to Los Angeles City Hall for the “March for Our Lives” rally.

Zoe Lopez, a 15-year-old high school freshman from Garden Grove, said she’s attending the rally to demand additional regulations on gun purchases.

In Sacramento, thousands chanted: “hey, hey, ho, ho, the NRA has got to go” as they assembled at the state’s capitol.

Rallies in Oakland and San Diego also drew hundreds of demonstrators.

Similar rallies were being held in cities across America to march for gun control and ignite political activism among teenagers.

The granddaughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. told tens of thousands of “March for Our Lives” demonstrators gathered in Washington, D.C. that she too has a dream — for a gun-free world.

“I have a dream that enough is enough,” Yolanda Renee King said, referencing her grandfather’s famous speech. “That this should be a gun-free world. Period.”

The crowd roared in response. The Washington, D.C. event has thousands thronging Pennsylvania Avenue to hear speakers including survivors of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and singers like Miley Cyrus.

Hundreds of thousands of people attended youth-led, anti-gun rallies across the United States and the world on Saturday, calling on lawmakers to tighten gun control in order to stop mass shootings and gun violence.

Hundreds of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School arrived for the Washington, D.C. march on three flights donated by Delta Air Lines.

They’ll return to Florida with Delta after the march too.

The airline, which broke ties with the National Rifle Association after last month’s school shooting that left 17 dead, said they offered the round-trip charter flights “as part of our commitment to supporting the communities we serve.

After the shooting in Parkland, Delta said it would no longer offer discounted fares to NRA members to reflect its neutral status on the gun-control debate.

The move triggered a backlash from gun advocates, and the state of Georgia killed a proposed tax break on jet fuel in retaliation.

A series of protests held across the United States Saturday in support of gun control is shaping up to be one of the biggest youth protests since the era of the Vietnam War.

The “March for Our Lives” rallies are a call to action by student survivors of last month’s school shooting in Florida that left 17 people dead.

At Washington’s “March for Our Lives” rally, throngs jammed Pennsylvania Avenue for blocks. Tens of thousands of teenagers and their supporters roared their approval as survivors of the Parkland, Florida, assault spoke from the stage. One of them, Delaney Tarr, laid down the students’ central demand, a ban on assault-type weapons, and declared “We will continue to fight for our dead friends.”

The Washington crowd was well into the tens of thousands. A vast crowd also rallied in New York City and large marches unfolded in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis and scores of other cities. More than 20,000 rallied in Parkland near the school.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators at student-led anti-gun rallies held across the United States on Saturday were joined by counterparts the world over.

In Paris, France about 100 demonstrators rallied near the Eiffel Tower in solidarity with the American “March for Our Lives” events.

Caitlin Waters, co-organizer of the Paris event, said it’s important for Americans overseas to let Washington know that they want more gun control. Similar rallies were planned in New Zealand, Japan and other countries around the world.

In the United States, rallies stretched from sea to shining sea, with people marching in huge cities like Los Angeles and New York City as well as in smaller ones like Boise, Idaho and Omaha, Nebraska.

Prominent civil rights leader U.S. Rep. John Lewis says that the student-led, anti-gun protests occurring across the United States remind him of the early days of the civil rights era.

“I think it’s amazing,” Lewis said in an interview with The Associated Press. “They will be the leaders of the 21st century.”

Lewis joined the “March for Our Lives” protest in Atlanta, Georgia, one of several anti-gun rallies being held across the U.S. on Saturday in response to last month’s Florida school shooting and other mass shootings.

The Democrat also implored his Republican colleagues in Congress to “come to the right side” and to pass meaningful gun-control legislation.

Lewis wore a button with a large red letter “F’’ on it, proudly displaying the grade he said he has received from the NRA. Lewis said hundreds of Democratic members of the House were wearing them today.

Tens of thousands gathered at a “March for Our Lives” rally in New York City on Saturday held a moment of silence to honor 17 people killed during a school shooting in Florida just last month.

Sam Hendler, a 16-year-old student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, was at the rally to read the victims’ names.

Another MSD student, Meghan Bonner, told the demonstrators that she wasn’t surprised when she learned the identity of the shooter because it was obvious something was wrong with him.

“There was so much more that could have been done to prevent this,” she said, fighting back tears. “I want to see change.”

The rally in midtown Manhattan is one of several being held across the United States on Saturday in response to gun violence.

The mayor of Houston, Texas told thousands of demonstrators at a “March for Our Lives” rally that adults have a responsibility to protect all children.

Mayor Sylvester Turner spoke at the Tranquillity Park event Saturday morning, one of several anti-gun rallies being held across the U.S. on Saturday in response to last month’s school shooting in Florida and other mass shootings.

“We have a responsibility for those of us as adults, we have a responsibility to stand up and protect our children,” said Turner.

Turner also chanted with the crowd “Now is the time” to “do the right thing.”

Students chanted “enough is enough” and held up signs with slogans like “our ballots will stop bullets” at a rally in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed in a school shooting last month.

More than 20,000 people filled the park near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for the “March for Our Lives” rally Saturday morning.

Others from the area traveled to Washington, D.C., where the main “March for Our Lives” event is being held. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft let over 100 people, including families of victims of the Parkland shooting, use the team’s charter plane for the trip.

Team spokesman Stacey James says astronaut Mark Kelly reached out to Kraft for the favor.

“It’s a hard thing to say no to, especially involving these victims,” James said.

More than 20,000 people are expected at the “March for Our Lives” rally nearest the Florida school where last month’s deadly shooting occurred.

Police presence was heavy early Saturday at a park near Marjory Stoneman Douglas High as organizers set up and demonstrators streamed in.

Eighteen-year-old Sabrine Brismeur and 17-year-old Eden Kinlock came from schools 20 miles away to pass out water.

Kinlock said that may seem “like a small thing but it helps in the bigger picture.”

The White House is applauding “the many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights” at gun control marches in Washington and in cities around the nation.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters says “keeping our children safe is a top priority” of President Donald Trump and points to his calls on Congress to pass legislation related to expanded background checks and school safety.

Trump is at his Florida home for the weekend. His motorcade took him to his West Palm Beach golf club on Saturday morning as hundreds of thousands of people were preparing for marches after the deadly mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The president has ordered the Justice Department to ban bump stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons.

Dozens of protesters are rallying outside the U.S. Embassy in London in solidarity with the “March for Our Lives” protest against gun violence.

Students, families with children and other protesters raised placards reading “Protect kids not guns,” ‘’Never again,” and “Enough is enough” Saturday outside the new embassy building in south London.

Amnesty International U.K.’s director Kate Allen referred to the 1996 school killings at Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, in which 16 students and a teacher were killed.

She said: “After our own school shooting at Dunblane, new gun ownership laws were introduced in Britain and that’s exactly what’s needed in the United States, where gun deaths are a national tragedy.”

Hundreds of marches are planned in U.S. cities and dozens of locations abroad.

With thousands of demonstrators gathering in Washington, organizers of the March for Our Lives rally say the country has reached a historic emotional tipping point on gun violence.

They predict a half-million demonstrators Saturday near the U.S. Capitol building for a several-hour rally. That would match last year’s women’s march and make it one of the largest Washington protests since the Vietnam War era.

A poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that 69 percent of respondents and half of Republicans now favor stronger gun control laws.

Activists are looking to channel the energy of this youth-led initiative into the midterm congressional elections this fall with elements like on-site voter registration booths.

Corporate partners cut cord with NRA as gun control debate rages

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The fallout over last week’s shooting rampage at a Florida high school started to take its toll on the National Rifle Association’s roster of corporate partners on Friday as a half dozen companies severed marketing ties with the gun advocacy organization.

The exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to car rental brands and a household moving company, occurred after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter U.S. gun ownership laws.

At the same time, gun control activists are stepping up pressure on Amazon.com Inc and other online streaming platforms to drop the online video channel NRATV, featuring gun-friendly programming produced by the NRA.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, founded after 20 first-graders were shot and killed at a Connecticut school in 2012, sent letters to Apple Inc, AT&T Inc, Amazon, Alphabet Inc’s Google and Roku Inc on Friday, asking them to drop NRATV from their platforms.

“We have been just disgusted by NRATV since its beginning,” Shannon Watts, founder of the Moms Demand Action group, told Reuters. “It tries to pit Americans against one another, all in an attempt to further their agenda of selling guns.”

AT&T said it does not carry NRATV. None of the other companies immediately responded to requests for comment.

The issue of gun control, and the NRA’s role in opposing it, became the focus of renewed national debate on Feb. 14, when a former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, with an AR-15 assault rifle he had purchased legally.

The U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment protects the right of Americans to bear arms. The NRA, which has long used campaign donations and effective lobbying to command political influence, argues that stricter gun control would erode individual rights. The group has not commented on companies cutting ties.

Angry student survivors of the shooting have confronted politicians from state lawmakers to U.S. President Donald Trump himself, demanding stricter gun control laws.

In response, the NRA and Trump have suggested arming teachers who have received training to deter attackers, a proposal that has been met with skepticism by teachers unions and gun violence experts.

Before the corporate defections, nearly two dozen companies nationwide had offered incentives to NRA members, according to ThinkProgress.com, a news site owned by the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

The attrition started late Thursday when three rental car brands owned by Enterprise Holdings Inc said they were ending discount programs, and First National Bank of Omaha said it would not renew the NRA’s contract to issue a co-branded Visa card.

By Friday, the list of defectors expanded to include Symantec Corp, which ended an discount program for its LifeLock identity theft product. Home security company SimpliSafe and Hertz Corp also terminated discount programs.

Chubb Ltd said it would stop underwriting a NRA-branded insurance policy for gun owners that covers legal costs in self-defense shootings. Another insurer, MetLife Inc, also said it had ended an auto and home incentive program for NRA members. And North American Van Lines said it was scrapping its an affiliate relationship with the NRA.

David Hogg, one of the student survivors of last week’s attack who launched the #NeverAgain anti-gun violence movement, said the students would target any company with ties to the NRA, in addition to lawmakers who accept donations.

About a dozen other companies with marketing ties to the NRA, including FedEx Corp and Hertz, which offer discount programs, did not respond to requests for comment.

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS

Activists have also called on public pension funds to divest from gun maker stocks, which were broadly lower on Friday.

Meanwhile, an online campaign using the Twitter hashtag #StopNRAmazon picked up steam, putting pressure on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to drop the channel. Many of those tweeting are in the entertainment industry.

“Ironic how the @NRA likes to point a finger at what kids watch on TV … while they spew vile rhetoric on NRAtv, streamed on @Amazon and aimed solely at boosting gun sales,” wrote screenwriter Randi Mayem Singer.

Moms Demand Action, which sent the letters to the streaming platform, also posted an online petition using the hashtag #DumpNRATV.

“To be affiliated with them, whether you are a company or a lawmaker, it is not going to pay off in the long run,” said Watts, the group’s founder, signaling the start of a broader campaign. “Doing business with the NRA is clearly bad business.”

The target of its ire is NRATV, which describes itself as “America’s Most Patriotic Team on a Mission to Take Back The Truth.” The channel features programming that leans heavily on speeches by NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre and spokeswoman Dana Loesch.

Yet another campaign, using the hashtag #BoycottNRA, was the top trending topic on Twitter on Friday morning.

The push is the latest effort by social activists to use social media to apply economic pressure to force change.

Last April, Fox News parted ways with television host Bill O‘Reilly when sponsors started to drop his show in the wake of sexual harassment allegations against him.

Similarly the National Football League announced a tougher policy on handling domestic violence accusations against players when its marketing partners applied pressure for changes.
