Today (February 3) is the festival of Setsubun in Japan. It is celebrated the day before the official start of Spring in Japan and is part of the larger Spring Festival (Haru Matsuri). Part of the festival involves a ritual called Mamemaki that involves tossing soybeans out of the house while shouting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” ( 鬼は外! 福は内!) “Demons Out! Good Luck In!”

In the 2001 series Hyakuujyu Sentai Gaoranger when the evil Duchess Org Tsuetsue revives the monster of the week and makes it grow, she tosses Org Seeds that greatly resemble soybeans onto the monster’s oozy remains and says “Oni wa uchi! Fuku wa soto!” (鬼は内！福は外！) literally “Demons In!  Good Luck Out!”  The monsters of the series are called Org and are basically Oni (the Japanese ogres/demons with horns).  So this twisted reversal of the traditional chant makes for a nice inversion.

So, Happy Setsubun and may all the Oni leave you alone and the good luck come to you!

That was fun!

... don’t have too much more to say than that! Of the Sentai I’ve watched it’s probably one of the ones that’s captured me the least; one of the ones that hasn’t had much stand out to me. A few funny and weird lines or scenes here and there, for sure, but there ultimately wasn’t much capturing me. Don’t take this as me saying it’s bad, though! I still stand by me saying there’s no Sentai I’ve outright disliked, and Gaoranger would absolutely have to do a lot worse than it did for it to be the first. 

It’s just... I dunno, the characterisations fell pretty flat to me. Again, they can be weird in some scenes, some very quirky writing; but I don’t really feel like anyone had much of anything going for them? I don’t feel I have a great handle on who these people are, and any kind of conflict very quickly fizzled out in the first few episodes. All the big bad villains, too - Shuten, Ura, Rastetsu - were just very boring. Put another way this is a season almost entirely made up of Just Some Guys and that makes it hard to recommend. I’m also, honestly, not entirely sure what the show was supposed to be about? I kinda loved Yabaiba and Tsuetsue, though! They were often the highlight of pretty much any episode, and between their comic relief act and constant underdog status and little duo thing they had going you seriously just want to see them come out okay.

Ultimately Gaoranger is something I had a good time watching but which I can’t say much more for. It’s far from bad but I don’t think I’ve made a lot of memories here, y’know? But put another way, I definitely won’t mind seeing the gang pop up in a future VS movie. I didn’t get much from it but I certainly had a good time

Zuran looked at the three he had plucked from the dark pit. “Izayaoi Kyuemon... Usukawa Dayu... Duchess Org TsueTsue...” Perhaps these three could be a king match? There is only one way to find out.
