"Tomorrow you will depart The sea will be howling your name, beckoning you to return However, only the trailing willow trees will listen And only the empty banks of sand will respond Tomorrow you will depart The hills will lean slightly, and wait Pebbles will anticipate for you every hour As the sound of each of your desolate footsteps echoes Tomorrow you will depart The sea will beckon you to return to your roots Calling forth ocean and winds, submerging your soul My hands will shield you from the sprinkling of cold rain Tomorrow you will depart A city at midnight with amber lights A lone soul, shoulders hunched back, calling forth sadness Strong waves crashing outside, my sadness deepens Someday you will return My hands will extend toward the open pathway Melodies will resound into a musical concert Loneliness will be no more Tomorrow you will depart The sea will be howling your name, beckoning you to return Drops of dew soak the dreamscape An infinite sky clings to the towering mountains Tomorrow you will depart Moss-grown dunes droop down in the sadness Streetlights grieve amidst cold rain As clouds completely cover the sky outside Tomorrow you will depart Will the sea whisper your name, dazed in grief? Through rainy days and dried months, I still mourn My hands long for letters containing news of you Tomorrow you will depart A city at midnight with amber lights Spring’s shadow has already passed halfway, hesitantly Lamenting at the whistling of the rising wind.”
By Trịnh Công Sơn, sung by Khánh Ly

Week 4: Cape Town Part 1
Hello again!
My research has been going really well, and I will be moving on to examine the frequency spread in the ionosphere using ionograms. This week Luz and I were able to take Friday off and spent a long weekend in Cape Town!
We took an Uber to Cape Town on Thursday and stayed at an Airbnb next to the waterfront. For food, we explored different cafes every day for breakfast, and they were amazing. Avocados are currently in season, and I have been eating them a lot. I tried different types of eggs, avocado, and bread, along with various drinks to match. On our first day, we walked along the ocean to the main waterfront area with all the tourist spots. We rode the Cape Wheel and got great views of the city and Table Mountain. We then spent some time shopping for gifts to bring back home to friends and family at the mall. After shopping, we got a late lunch at the food court. They offered small thin crust pizzas, and we decided to split one. However, we accidentally ordered a much larger pizza, but it was still delicious. After filling up on pizza, we got ice cream from another shop in the food court and got a tasting flight of ice cream with five flavors: chai latte, salted caramel, mint chip, chocolate, and raspberry coconut. My favorite was the chai latte. After that, we headed back to the Airbnb and met up with Axel, who joined us.

For day two in Cape Town, we started off with a cafe. Then, due to the rain for most of the day, we went to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa and the Two Oceans Aquarium. The art museum itself was like a piece of art. The museum is an old grain silo that they converted, but they kept a lot of the original architecture. We saw the "One Must Be Seated" exhibition, which focused on showing the Akan chieftaincy through the royal umbrella and stool by Rita Mawuena Benissan. They also had an exhibition by Vietnamese American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen that looked at the impact of the war. There was a big collection of works from South African artists and artists from all over Africa. Overall, I really enjoyed learning more about the backstory and inspiration for the different pieces of art.

After the museum, we went to the aquarium. We started off with the fish and saw a bunch of clownfish and jellyfish. Then they had a huge tank with a lot of different fish, stingrays, and sea turtles. My favorite was the sea turtles, and I would consider them my second favorite aquatic animal (after dolphins). From the aquarium, there was a lookout at the marina for seals, and we got to see one! Unfortunately, it moved too quickly, and I was unable to get a photo. After that, we went to the penguin gallery, where they provided a lot of information about their efforts to help the penguins after they were added to the endangered list. A huge problem is that the penguins have started colonies on the mainland instead of on islands due to sea lions taking over their habitats. Being on the mainland makes them vulnerable to new predators, such as dogs, and impacts from human activity. In the penguin gallery, we got to see some penguins, and my favorite one was standing right next to the barrier, holding out its wing as if it was pointing at something the whole time. After that, we saw the sharks! South Africa is actually known for its population of Great White Sharks due to their sea lion colonies that the sharks feed on. It also makes it one of the best places in the world to go shark cage diving.

To end the day, we got sushi. We ordered a sushi platter with 36 pieces and an additional roll, and it was amazing. After dinner, we went to a rooftop bar and made friends with the bartender and other patrons who were from South Africa. We had a lot of fun talking with them and watching Prison Break.

For our last day, we went to another cafe and walked along the ocean again before heading back to Hermanus. This was the first time we did the drive in the daylight, and it was beautiful. There are so many mountains that we passed and drove over, and we passed several of the wineries. Overall, I would have to say South Africa has some of the best scenery I have ever seen with the combination of mountains and ocean. It reminds me a lot of the mountains in the Colorado/Utah region, but there is much more fauna. At the end of the drive, we saw a huge rainbow coming out of the ocean.

Overall, our trip to Cape Town was the perfect way to explore, even though it was rainy, and we plan to go back when the weather is nicer.

Tuan Andrew Nguyen at jamescohan.com
The centerpiece of Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s current on-line show at James Cohan Gallery is ‘The Boat People,’ a video about a heroic group of survivor children who’ve become the last humans alive. They parade through their lonely world carrying wooden artifacts (sculpture hand crafted in Bataan, Philippines) that speak to war and migration pre-apocalypse. The Bodhisattva Guanyin reappears throughout the exhibition (here making a benevolent gesture), repeatedly orienting the narrative toward compassion. In a must-see video, Nguyen explains that the dark, burned areas on the wood point to fire as ‘a strong metaphor for freedom and liberation, both spiritual and political.’ (On view through May 3rd).
Tumblr media
youtube
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
youtube
Tumblr media

A Call for Empathy or "Slacktivism"?
A Call for Empathy or “Slacktivism”?
The theme of ARS22: living encounters is a call for empathy. It acknowledges that the world is in a crisis in every possible way and the goal is to bring about a diverse set of voices to create empathy in the world. One of the most memorable pieces was Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s My Ailing Beliefs Can Cure Your Wretched Desires which is a film that is shown on two diagonally joined screens. The last…
