@brellygifs is hosting [insert ship here] appreciation week, starting today - so of course I have to post about my blorbos!
Day 1: Diego day
It's late and I'm tired, so I'm just gonna give you a headcanon I've got floating around about Diego and houseplants:
Grace buys him a plant when he moves into the gym and tells her he's got an apartment now. Just a low-maintenance thing, a spider plant or something. He doesn't have much light, but he's got just enough for one plant, so he puts it in the window, and makes a note on how often Grace tells him it needs to be watered.
And it starts off well! He's good with routine, he diligently waters it just the right amount, on a regular basis. Plants love routine, and it settles happily into its spot. It's healthy! It's thriving! He talks to it sometimes, a little self-consciously. He's given it a name, in his head, but won't say it out loud in case anyone overhears.
He finds it reassuring that he can do this one thing right. He CAN keep a plant alive, suck it Allison!
And then he gets arrested for vigilantism and spends a month in jail, and when he comes back it's dessicated and dead. He throws the corpse in the garbage, with the expired milk and eggs and the carrots that are rather TOO full of life, and silently vows never to get another plant.
(A decade later, Anita drags him over to a pathetic, dying plant in the supermarket and orders him to save it, and he’s like, I can't do that, I'm no good with plants, I’ll just kill it faster, baby. But she’s determined, and of course he caves. And it blooms.)

Being with Sissy, she opened something in me, showed me I'd never be free hiding from who I really am. And after losing her, I realized I just can't live in that box anymore.

Headcanon again! This was for a fic that I'm probably not going to get around to writing:
No one really quite understands why Lila still loves her mum--almost as much as she hates her, and both tempered by distance and the family she made for herself. But it wasn't all training, training, training. They had fun times together. She was sure, sure that her mum cared about her, at least occasionally...
Like the time when she went home from school for the Christmas holiday, upset: she and her mum didn't celebrate anything, and the kids had teased her for it, or worse, pitied her.
She has a distant memory of celebrations when she was very little - Diwali, maybe? Something warm and bright in the grey London winter. When she tells her mum this, the Handler gets a strange expression, and Lila thinks for a moment that she's in trouble--but then the Handler opens up about Hanukkah traditions. And just for a second, Lila gets a glimpse of her mum as a child herself, with an actual, real family...The Handler quickly shuts that line of thought down again before she gives too much away--but the next day she tells Lila she's decided they're doing Hanukkah this year, and shows her what to do with the menorah, lets her light the first candle.
Lila loves the reverence of it, the quiet, the lights in the darkness. They do it most years, after that, and it's the one time they have something resembling a family celebration--albeit one that Lila knows can be taken away if she's not good enough, obedient enough, loyal enough...
Still, it's hard for Lila to simply hate the Handler when they've shared these things--when she's seen a side to the Handler that maybe no one else has seen. Was it manipulation? Is she still just deluding herself? It's a puzzle she's never going to solve.
