(Reuters) – Miner Anglo American Plc expects an incremental rise in production between 2018 and 2021 and costs to fall, its chief executive officer said on Tuesday.

(Reuters) – Miner Anglo American Plc expects an incremental rise in production between 2018 and 2021 and costs to fall, its chief executive officer said on Tuesday.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Cutifani said the company, which has mining operations in Southern Africa, North and South America and Australia, expects 2018 production to be 2 percent higher than its previous forecast.

The miner sees a 3 percent rise in production in 2019 and a further 5 percent boost in both 2020 and 2021.

As reported by the portal www.miningaustralia.com.au, shares of American company Anglo American jumped by almost 4% on Friday, October 26, after the news that Cynthia Carroll was leaving the post of chief executive officer.

But this increase, most likely, will not last long.

As the same analyst for Mineweb noted on the same day: "The problems have not gone away, but those who think they have left do not see the reality. There are several really big problems that they need to solve, in particular, in their platinum business. "

The outgoing CEO will actually leave much earlier than the middle of next year.

But for most commentators, the fact that Carroll will remain in office for a while is a good sign.

Regardless of the market's opinion on the results of its work in recent months, its immediate withdrawal and a hole in the leadership it would create could have a bad effect on the group and its divisions.

Gideon du Plessis, Secretary-General of Solidarity, echoes this by claiming in a written statement that Carroll's resignation is a major loss for the South African mining industry and for the country's image as a place for investment.

And it is in South Africa, and especially in its platinum region, that Carroll's successor will be working on his throat.

Carroll is respected in mining and political circles in South Africa, and her role in the next few months is likely to continue to be important for the group's plans, especially in light of the verification of the platinum sector that is currently under way.

But it is unlikely that any real solution to these problems will be achieved before it leaves.

After a sharp decline in 2008 and 2009, the group recovered its level of operating profit from its platinum operations, but recent events have caused much concern.

For the third quarter, the group reported a 6 percent drop in refined platinum products in terms of reduced production at the Union North and South mines, Mogalakwena, Tumela and Siphumelele.

But more importantly, the group loses approximately 4,500 ounces of platinum products per day due to an illegal strike at their mines.

"As a result, and depending on how an illegal strike is resolved, the expected output of refined platinum for 2012 will drop to 2.2 - 2.4 million ounces," the group reported in its third quarter production report published 28 of October.

"Taking into account the remaining fixed cost base and as a result of production cutback, the cost price in 2012 is expected at R15,500 - R16,000 per conditional ounce of affinity platinum," the report also says.

But platinum is not the only problem for the group. As noted in South Africa's Public Investment Corporation, "incorrect placement of capital has damaged the value of the company over the past few years ... We also believe that improper allocation of capital limits the dividend payout potential for the group, which leads to unattractive income in the form of dividends compared to other companies Its level ".

It also says "that the group has shown disappointing results, particularly in the copper, coal and metals sector of the platinum group, and it is difficult to meet the deadlines for the implementation of growth and budget programs."
