they sent it to me on twitter and it took me too many minutes to understand that it was him in another AI version and not an actor from a turkish soap... 💀
I thought this was a random ethnic looking white man until I noticed the eyes??? Idk how I know it’s him but yeah it took me a while too😭😭

queer short film: "the actress"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i’m featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
Tumblr media
united states | 8 minutes | 2021 | narrative short
audio in english; subtitles available in dutch, english, french, german, italian, portuguese, spanish, and turkish
the actress, written and directed by andrew ondrejcak, recreates six scenes from classic hollywood films – including key moments from queer film history, like marlene dietrich’s iconic scene in a tuxedo in 1930’s morocco (where dietrich famously kisses a woman, though the actress does not depict that part) – by reinventing them to star the fabulous isabel sandoval. as the eponymous “actress”, sandoval takes us through what she calls “a dazzling and bold stroke of cinematic graffiti”, a tour through time of the way actors inhabit characters and new worlds, as well as highlighting when certain actors are not, in fact, invited to portray certain roles. - deepa's full review, including content notes at the end
watch on mubi with a subscription or free trial; check out more of ondrejcak’s work at his website and sandoval’s work through her twitter!

I'm guessing you sent this to me cos I've mentioned that d'arcy is Turkish and Jewish so it would be nice if that was acknowledged in the characters she plays....and I stand by that I'd love for d'arcy's characters to reflect her ethnicity more, but this tweet comes off as really tokenistic regardless - as if she has nothing to offer in the context of her casting beyond being tall. d'arcy is one of the most critically acclaimed self-made comedic actors in recent memory. her talent is clear and unmatched and rages from slapstick skit comedy to dramas like aloto. tweets like this annoy me because obviously a diverse cast is great and deeply important, but acting like it's diversity is what makes the cast of alota great is a tokenistic and narrow take that only leads to more reductive takes. d'arcy shows through Greta how many single lesbians in the 1940s essentially maintained this studied constant performance of girly hetronormativity so they wouldn't be ostrisized, imprisoned or killed - and d'arcy's performance is so good because it's all about that Straight™ mirage and how scared Greta is to drop it because she knows from her ex that she could be institutionalised if she does. That's why she's constantly talking about her "rules" and why she doesn't want to break them. D'arcy is perfectly cast because she's a great character actor whose biggest comedic acclaim is projecting a maticulously charming personas to cover up something bigger, which is exactly what Greta does as a character. I'm infinitely more annoyed that all this twitter user's roommate could think of to say about d'arcy's qualities as a part of the cast of alota is that she's tall, more than I'm annoyed ppl don't know she's not white.
