Mr. Dark, before and after his failed battle against The First Nightmare

Once upon a time, during a period of everlasting peace in The Glade, there lived a powerful magician. Instead of the friendly warmth of the sun's rays, he was created by Polokus himself from the biting intensity of the sun's fire. While details of this First Hero (Mr. Light, as some records say) are scarce and some of his good deeds are accidentally misattributed to his apprentice, he was one of the many noble creatures that stood up against Jano, The First Nightmare.

And...he failed. Horribly. The First Hero was a powerful magician, but so was Jano, and Jano's magic ultimately won. As punishment for his brash insolence, Jano took the dying hero, stole his pretty, pretty face, and pierced his soul with the shifting, eldritch touch of the abyss.

After all, with a little nudge, any dream can become a nightmare...

And then he stole a pink orb and built a fortress made out of cake before being beaten up by a 10 year old that may or may not be his biological son, The End. 8)

For the last year or so, I've been looking at my "Mr. Dark is a Thingamajig" idea and thinking to myself "yeah, this idea has promise but I think I made this design TOO lame". So I decided to give in to the desire to draw a fun shadow creature and say that the reason he's wearing a big cloak now is because Jano takes "Got Your Nose" way too seriously and he's still sour about it.

Jano is a jerk.

Man, seeing the current Crash fandom landscape is so weird. I’m from the 2005 days of the fanbase when a large part of the fanbase were out for the blood of Radical Entertainment’s Kirsten for what CTTR did with Crunch (even though CNK and Twinsanity didn’t really do anything with him. Heck, arguably even Wrath of Cortex did jack all with post-brainwashing Crunch). 

Yeah, the days where a few fanfic/comic artists dominated the landscape, where the fanbase was generally super-homophobic, and there was hardly any material that focused on the scientist characters* because it was all focused on the animal mutants because “obviously” the scientists were cruel and abusive** and the mutants were tragic figures that could be good with love and shit.***

Now there’s scientist OCs all over the place and there’s not nearly as much sugarcoating of their dickery, and there’s far less homophobia about (in fact a good portion of the art is very much gay-focused), and there’s not nearly as much art for the animal characters barring Crash and Coco.

Kind of a bummer about the animal point because I’m still far more interested in the mutants than the scientists, but I am a-ok with the other fanbase shifts. 

*Only ones off the top of my head were by JenL and, to an extent, TurquoisePhoenix. 

**Mainly because they had it in their heads that the animals were abused like actual slaves when sapient, and especially for the likes of Dingodile having narmy backstories like the two animals being made anthro before being fuse. Never mind the fact it’d be more resource-effective to fuse them before making them anthro (or even better, having that all rolled into one function), there’s no sign that they were ever abused. Most weren’t even depicted as being subject to the Cortex Vortex. 

***Who the hell thought making Dingodile a sympathetic tragic figure was a good idea? The other mutants aren’t any better but if you’re doing that you’re kinda missing what the games are explicitly telling you. They’re bad eggs with or without Cortex’s aid.

RAYMAN FANDOM FROM THE EAST OF TUMBLR

... it is time.

Long ago, on February the 7th, 2023, the great @raygirlramblings had held a tournament for the villains of the Rayman franchise in order to postpone the titular hero's fights against them.

And now... the day has come.

Not only are we celebrating love on Valentine's Day, we will also be starting our celebration of the VICTORY of Admiral Razorbeard, antagonist of Rayman 2, via an art collab of the chaos and turmoil he himself had went through!

And so, as someone who voted for Mr Dark, I say we accept our losses and work together on this set. There will be tears, there will be bloodshed, there will be... whatever other gross liquids that tend to come out of anyone's bodies... BUT! It will be done.

Here's the deal:

One slot for each villain. Each artist who volunteers to draw a villain under the "main slots" list must contribute to drawing said villain. They can also choose to draw more than one villain if they do please. Simple. As. That. There will also be an "optional slots" list below the "main slots" list, where they're not required to be included in the final product, but they ARE there as extra challenges for you guys. It's a well-known fact that entering the underworld will often transform you into a member of the Undead, but WHAT you turn into is completely random. Most of the time, a hapless loser tumbling into the spooky depths just harmlessly poofs into a deader, paler version of themselves - a zombie, skeleton, or a ghost that still has most of their personality left intact, albeit with a new corpse-y body odor and a newfound appreciation for brains pies.

This did not happen to some elf named Olav. No, when HE accidentally fell into the Valley of the Undead, bones cracked and hair fell out as he writhed about and horrifically transformed into a ghost-eating ghoul, the apex predator of the Undead that "cleans up" lingering spirits and purifies them so they can move on to the next life. By eating them.

Going from "just a dude, just a regular dude" to "Apex Predator of the ghost world complete with sharp teeth and rending claws in which to better chew on bones and zombie flesh" is bound to drive anyone insane so Olav Ghost Roaster feels a tiny bit unhinged because he had to claw his way back into sentience over time. He's been told that he's eaten an entire village several times. He doesn't remember that village, even if he forever carries the proof of his punishment.

He's fine now, thankfully. He thinks. He hopes. Now he's the Skylander most likely to tells the new students at the Academy increasingly cryptic and harrowing advice as he tries to relearn how to be a chef again, because his transformation has really thrown his taste buds all out of whack and most people don't like eating ectoplasm. Another hobby he has on the side is trying to figure just who he was before he became a ghoul. Did he have family. Did he have friends. HOW long was he in a weird feral state before Eon found him. Was it just one village. Like I said, he's fine. He's fine fine fine. Everything is fineFINEFINE.
