Lacas de Olinala
The pottery and basketry have remained almost intact since the pre-Hispanic period, while others have undergone significant changes in terms of their technique and design since the colonial period. Today, most of the production is available for sale in tourist centers such as Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Taxco, where the modern evolution of craftsmanship influences. Craft traditions include painting on amate bark, Olinalá lacquerware, and Taxco silverware.
Review of the manufacturing status of the figure
The Declaration of Protection for the Designation of Origin of Olinalá Lacquerware was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on July 22, 2022. The new Designation of Origin (DO) designates the municipality of Olinalá in the state of Guerrero as a protected geographical area and seeks to keep alive the tradition and technique of wood lacquering.
This designation identifies Mexican lacquerware as a pre-Hispanic artisanal technique consisting of the application of a mixture of dolomitic earth, animal fat, and vegetable oils that is spread (preferably) with the palm of the hand in uniform overlapping layers on the surface of the object to be coated, whether these are guajes, jícaras, bateas, or wooden objects made in the municipality of Olinalá.
https://www.olinala.gob.mx/
Uses
The wood used for making trunks, boxes, trays, and other decorative objects comes from the "linaloe" tree, very aromatic and common in the region. The production of these crafts is of enormous complexity and laboriousness. It serves to store valuable objects or jewelry with more value.
HOW IT'S MADE
https://youtu.be/Lyyj3E-Bgsw?si=TRXfqTPr1ZZ6FI-s
It is mainly made with ceramics and detailed figures representing the traditional cultures of the state of Guerrero.
Olinalá lacquerware, originating from the state of Guerrero in Mexico, is traditionally made using linaloe or cedar wood, as well as natural pigments such as cochineal, añil, and pericón. These materials are combined with varnishing and hand painting techniques to create the elaborate and colorful pieces of art that characterize Olinalá lacquerware.
Where in Guerrero are Olinala lacquerware made?
This town is located in the mountainous area of the state of Guerrero and, along with Temalacatzingo, are the production centers for these crafts made with lacquer (or maque, as some scholars call it, to differentiate it from other types of industrial lacquers).
Who created them or proposed them
Francisco Coronel Navarro, originally from the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, was born in 1941. At the age of seven, he began making miniature boxes or stick boxes, the so-called "Olinalá Boxes," to sell at fairs in Tlapa, Tepalzingo, Tejalpa, Petlalcingo, Chalma, snow fair or Tuxtla fair. During the seventies, he rescued the gilding technique on the guaje, which had been abandoned due to the cost of lamination and the laboriousness of the process, but which dates back to the great laminators of colonial altarpieces.

Fire in Southern Mexico
As Mexico entered peak fire season in March 2024, dry and warm conditions helped fuel the flames of more than 100 active blazes across the country. This image shows smoke billowing from one such fire near the border of neighboring states Oaxaca (west) and Chiapas (east) in southern Mexico.
The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 acquired the image at about 10:30 a.m. local time (16:30 Universal Time) on March 27, 2024. The image is natural color (bands 4-3-2) overlaid with pixels from a false-color image to emphasize hot spots associated with the fire front.
According to Mexico’s National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), there were 120 actively burning fires across Mexico on March 27. Preliminary data indicated that fires that day affected more than 7,000 hectares (27 square miles) across 19 of Mexico’s 31 states.
The fire shown burned across vegetation located about 100 kilometers west of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital and largest city of Chiapas. Past fires this season have burned closer to major urban areas, including a deadly fire that burned near the Oaxacan town of San Lucas Quiaviní, and fires that sent plumes of smoke toward Mexico City, the country’s capital.
Fire season in Mexico generally ramps up in February and peaks around mid-March through May. In February 2024, warm and dry conditions set the stage for burning. Long-term drought saw little relief from rain that month, and the national average temperature was 0.3 degrees Celsius (0.5 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, making it the 13th warmest February on record, according to the North American Drought Monitor.
The seasonal fire outlook issued in March 2024 called for warm and dry conditions to continue through May, alongside increased fire activity and fire potential expected for all Mexican mountain ranges.

How to Get to Palenque?
By Air
Palenque has a small domestic airport, however flights are not frequent and they only fly out of Mexico City. The other airport near Palenque, Villahermosa Airport (VSA) is 133km away in Tabasco. It’s a small airport and planes that land there tend to be smaller.
There are regular flights from Mexico City, Cancún, Mérida, Monterrey and Guadalajara. ADO runs a direct service in comfortable minibuses from Villahermosa airport to the bus terminal at Glorieta de la Cabeza Maya in Palenque town.
By Bus
The closest tourist town to Palenque is San Cristobal del las Casas, which is just about 3hours 20minutes away by car. However, the road between San Cris via Ocosingo to Palenque is not safe mostly because of road blockades and armed gangs patrolling this stretch of the road.
You can catch the overnight ADO bus, which takes a detour via Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The journey takes much longer, around 7 hours, but ADO bus takes the longer and safer route to Palenque. You can save a night of accommodation and arrive in Palenque in the morning.
By Day Tour
Another way to get there is to book a day tour from San Cristobal de las Casas that will also bring you to a few waterfalls on the way (I’ll talk more about the waterfalls below). These day tours include transportation, admission, and a guide in Palenque. It’s a great option if you want to learn more about the Palenque ruins and have someone else handle the logistics.
