Roleplay Ideas
Hey! It’s Drago, been poking around tumblr and wanting to add to some group roleplay ideas cause I’m mostly seeing muse a and b, instead of group options, so I’m hoping this could help.
Long Term
1. Drama in Drama
Who doesn’t love Theatre? Well, a group of kids join the drama club. What kind of play are they putting on? None other than the classic Cinderella. But when romance blooms, sabotage ensues, and drama unfolds, will this play ever make it on time?
Genre: Slice of life, drama
Numbers: 7-15
Roles:
Director/Teacher
Assistant (optional)
Lead roles
- Cinderella
- Prince
- King
- Step mother
- Step sister 1
- Step sister 2
- Lucifer the cat
- Coachman
Backstage crew (2-5)
- Lighting
- props
- scenery
Understudies
Extras
Roles can change and can be edited. You can take the idea and change it to make it your own. But this can also double as a high school roleplay to get interactions amongst characters. All character types are available for this roleplay. Feel free to add what you want.
2. Voyagers
On the ocean. Nothing better than exploring the sea with your most trusted friends. But when you set off, you find yourself in a world bigger than the small place you grew up. Merpeople, pirates, monsters, and natural elements. Will you guys ever find the promise land of a new shore?
Genre: fantasy, action, adventure
Numbers: 7-25
Roles:
Voyagers
Pirates
Merpeople
Monsters
This is also a very general idea but feel free to add your own elements into it. You can add roles and put your own flare to it. You can also make it a pirate roleplay.
3. Crossing Over
You ever hear yourself saying “Man, I wish I lived in that world.” Well, what if you could? A group of online friends suddenly get a random person thrown into their server (or group chat). When they start talking strangely, they think it’s a bot. That is until they’re all thrown into a portal that brings them to the realm of worlds. And now you and your friends have to travel through different worlds to get back to your own... or... will you choose to leave your own world behind?
Genre: Any
Numbers: 3-20
Roles:
OC’s.
This is a creative one that can cross through multiple genres or fandoms. Teen wolf and gravity falls and Percy Jackson. Ouran High School and The Office and Marvel and Disney cartoons. This will be up to you and the group of how you want to cross dimensions. But basically the portal is placed in a specific place of the universe and you have to find it. You can basically have fun in the world you want, until everyone turns on you or you guys cause problems and then it’s off to the new world.
4. Help Wanted
(Warning: this one is not for sensitive role players)
You think you’re a caregiver? Think you can provide all you can? Well how about being a caretaker for an orphanage? But this isn’t just any orphanage. No, there are very little workers here for a reason. Because people expected docile children and sad souls who a hug and a cookie can solve all their problems. But what if that wasn’t right? What if these orphans aren’t as innocent as they seem? What if they hate your very presence? And what if.. just what if, leaving your door unlocked could be your end?
Genre: Horror, ‘Slice of Life’
Numbers: 7-19
Roles:
New Worker 1
New Worker 2 (optional)
Worker 1
Worker 2
Worker 3 (optional)
Worker 4 (optional)
Orphans (at least 4)
Outside Friends (optional)
This roleplay is darker than the others but it’s an option. The kids basically don’t trust new people and only want their workers. Some kids are sad and quiet, some are hyper and loud, some are troubled by demons, and some are the demons. And some are our to kill you. But you as the new worker have to prove yourself or die trying.
5. Under the Sea
In the ocean lie the mystical creatures we know as merpeople. But there are multiple kinds. There’s the surface class mers. Which contain the coral, open, and trench families of mers. And then there’s the deep sea class of mers which contain the twilight mers, abyssal mers, And trench dwellers. These two classes of merfolk do not get along well, at all. But when all of these merfolk are plagued by an evil sea witch, they’re gonna have to work together to defeat the witch, or they can say good bye to their homes as they know it.
Genre: Fantasy, adventure
Number: 6-18
Roles:
Surface Mers
- coral mers (>1)
- open sea mers (>1)
- trench dwellers (>1)
Deep sea Mers
- Twilight mers (>1)
- Abyssal Mers/Luminescent mers (>1)
- Trench Dwellers (>1)
Sea Witch
Other Species Possible:
Sharks
Stingrays
Angler fish
Squids
Octopi
Surface Mers
- Coral mers are very colorful and usually smaller to get around all the nooks and crannies. Their tails are shorter but with bigger side fins to help with sharp turns and agile swimming. However they’re not built for long swims. They’re peaceful and friendlier since they live close by and often help each other out. Some coral mers are even able to use camoflauge.
- Open sea mers have long and very strong tails. Most open sea mers are monochromatic while still being vibrant. This is to help with currents and distance. However they’re not agile. They are powerful swimmers though. These are the active hunters of the sea. They are aggressive and territorial. Open sea mers are independent and strong willed. So meeting others isn’t always common. And most of the time, is unwanted.
- Surface trench dwellers are the lower class. These are the pack hunters. They are fast and agile. They have the fastest speed of the surface class. They are also very untrusting of other species. But are the most loyal to their kind or accepted kinds. Surface trench dwellers have faded color schemes. You can also find rogue or lone mers in this species. The dynamics work pack style. They also have the easiest transition between surface and deep sea, however can not go past the twilight zone.
Deep Sea Mers
- Twilight mers have very very sharp senses and good reflexes. They are also evasive and good at hiding. Their best tactic is ambush. They also have tougher scales to better keep in heat for survival. They are usually very peaceful and respectful. They are still aggressive but usually in an act of defense. Their tails are long and quick for swimming and hunting. They are usually dark colored merfolk. It’s likely to find solid colored mers in this species than any other species.
- Abyssal mers also known as luminescent mers are the furthest species found in the ocean. However these gentle creatures are omnivores. They feed on mostly plants and small jellyfish or squid. They also have luminescent scales that help them see in the dark. They’re more independent and will often get aggressive with each other. They have thick scales to keep in heat for survival and for defensive purposes. These mers have the longest but the weakest tails because there are no currents in the abyss.
- Deep sea Trench dwellers are the most dangerous of the species. They’ve been known to be cannibals. Often mistaken for surface trench dwellers, who are more docile to invaded territory, deep sea trench dwellers are lone mers. They are the most hostile and have the most violent tendencies. These mers are the ones notorious for sinking ships and killing humans. They are silent killers because of the way their scales and fins are built, you can’t hear them approach. These mers are deadly.
6. Surprise!
You’re moving into an apartment complex! And surprise! You’re a roommate to who even knows! And not to mention your next door neighbors! Or the other next door neighbors! Or the ones beside those. Who’s having a party on a Tuesday?! What was that crash?! Who’s baby is screaming and crying?! Pizza guy delivered to the wrong room for the 8th time! What kind of crazy place did you sign end up living in?!?
Genre: Slice of life, humor
Numbers: 4-18
Roles:
- New Comer
- Roomate 1
- Roomate 2
- Roomate 3
- Next door neighbor
- Next door neighbor 2
- Next door neighbor 3
- Next door neighbor 4
This is a fun silly one where you can basically go crazy. There doesn’t have to be 1 new comer. There can be 5 new people or all of them can be new! Whatever you choose to do! Go crazy and have a blast or learn to take painkillers like a pro, because you’ll probably need them!
Hope you liked them and feel free to use these as an inspiration! I’ll be posting more eventually!

Studio: Digital Skins - Conceptual & Contextual Statements
Conceptual Statement
“Jellyfish” is a Digital Skins studio project drawing on posthuman theory and relates using UV reactive materials to bioluminescence and how it is used for communication amongst creatures.
I started planning what I was going to do as soon as both the World of Wearable Arts and studio briefs came out in second semester last year. Seeing using UV materials as our studio theme and WOW being a UV category with Fly, Float, Flow, I automatically thought about bioluminescence and jellyfish which would give that floating illusion and fit both briefs. My design was going to be a real-life Jellyfish with LED lights in the tendrils that the model or tech would move to create the swimming effect. I was very focused on the beautiful aesthetic this costume could have. However, this idea was shut down by the fact that no additional lighting could be used in the category, and there would be multiple jellies on stage as it’s a popular creature for this section.
Not wanting to completely start from scratch, I began designing/brainstorming based off my contextual research around bioluminescence and posthumanism.
I wanted to focus on how bioluminescence is used as a communication tool for some creatures. From there I asked questions such as; How do we humans communicate? This led to how we communicate via mobiles through texting and how Emoji’s have become a form of communication by expressing our emotions through them. Even replacing words at times.
With this break-down I created a futuristic negative posthuman world where we have lost our ways of communicating and can only understand our surroundings through Emoji form. Since jellyfish follow currents, I took that as a metaphor that in this new world, the jellyfish followed the evolving trend in order to be understood. Therefore a jellyfish as an Emoji would be a fish encased in jelly. And that is where I got my idea from with the title literally being called “Jellyfish”.
I took a humorous approach with this project by using an Emoji as a base but also because I was slightly mocking all the other realistic jellyfish costumes out there.
The biggest challenge that I faced with this costume was making the jelly shell. I needed it to be plastic to be able to see the fish inside but I was also determined for it to ‘wobble’ across the stage to really get the jelly theme across. Since my design was made for the model to hold it above their head, I also had to think of weight. I was not worried about it being UV reactive as I would be using fluorescent paint that ended up working perfectly. I started by thinking an inflatable would be the best option but it had too many risks of what would happen if it got torn and deflated.
It took weeks to sort this out and searching for material that I eventually had to let go of the wobble and just focus on transparency in which I used Transparent Worbla that is commonly used in cosplay. This proved perfect for it but I needed to get it earlier in the semester to test and see how it works as the worbla can be difficult to handle on a big scale. Time management was not my friend this semester and struggling to find a material set me back weeks.
I originally wanted to include technology in my garment by attaching a servo on a helmet that would make the fish ‘swim’ when activated via a push button. But after completing the shell, there was not enough room inside it for the fish to move as the fish needed to be quite large to be able to see what it was from the outside.
In reflection, I am satisfied with how this semester went. I had to pick my battles this semester as I could not give my 100% effort to my studies which is something I accepted as I was dealing with my health. It is not my best work but that is something I knew I couldn’t achieve from the start this semester but I believe I learnt a lot of making skills with this studio and feel more confident in those skills than before. I decided to do this studio solo because I already built up the research, but also because I like to challenge and test myself with these studios to see what I can actually do. I was not surprised about not getting through pre-selection for WoW as looking at the project, it needed to be bigger which would cost too much to create.
Contextual Statement
For this project, our Digital Skins studio was looking at posthumanism (PH) and working with UV reactive materials. For my context, along with PH, I took the UV theme and explored what other things in our world could relate to UV and saw that bioluminescence was the closest fit. This meant that UV not only influenced my conceptual process, but also my contextual and the reasoning behind the garment.
Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is a glow that is created when two chemicals (luciferin and either luciferase or photoprotein) react within a living organism (National Geographic, n.d).
There are bioluminescent organisms/animals on land such as Firefly’s or fungi found in rotten trees, but majority of bioluminescent beings are found in the ocean. More specifically in the “twilight” zone of the ocean. (Wilson, V. T., n.d). The twilight zone (also know as disphotic/poorly lit zone) starts 201 metres from the surface where only blue/green light is shown as it has a shorter wavelength, meaning it has more energy to penetrate the water’s surface unlike other colours.
Species that live in this zone are fish, bacteria, and jellies (National Geographic, n.d). More specifically, jellyfish, squid, shrimp, krill, marine worms and fish such as the Angler (Wilson, V. T., n.d) .
The bioluminescent light emitted from these creatures can travel a long way and can blend in with the light from above. In some areas of the ocean, these creatures are the main source of light (Wilson, V. T., n.d). However, the bioluminescent light is not the same for each creature. It can depend on multiple factors including the habitat and the organism it is in (National Geographic, n.d). An example being the marine life emit blue-ish, green light because they cannot process other colours such as red or yellow.
Bioluminescence is used differently for each creature.
LiveScience gives a list saying the main uses being:
“Communication: Fireflies flash at one another in a species-specific pattern, often in order to find a mate.
Locating food: In the twilight depths of the ocean, some fish species use their light like a spotlight to find prey.
Attracting prey: Some species, like the Angler fish, use a luminescent lure to attract other fish.
Camouflage: In the darker parts of the ocean, it's hard to see anything below you, but it's easy to see the silhouette of what's above you. For this reason, some species produce spots of light on their undersides, which blur their outlines and allow them to blend in with the light from above. This is also known as counter-illumination.
Mimicry: The cookie-cutter shark has one unlit patch on its underside, which resembles a smaller fish when viewed from below. When a large predator approaches, the shark can take a large bite and then flee. This allows the cookie-cutter shark to prey on animals that are much larger and more powerful than it is.
Self-defense: When threatened, some animals release a cloud of bioluminescent fluid, similar to the way squid defend themselves with a cloud of ink. Others use a bright flash to blind predators.” (Radford, B. 2010)
Others emit bioluminescence when disturbed such as plankton (National Geographic, n.d).
Scientists and Bioengineers are seeing how bioluminescence can be used within human lives. Experiments such as bioluminescent trees to help illuminate cities to reduce electricity. Bioluminescent plants that glow when they need water, reducing farming/agriculture costs (National Geographic, n.d).
Bioluminescence is not the same as Fluorescence as it does not involve a chemical reaction (National Geographic, n.d). Fluorescence is when light is absorbed and then remitted under stimulating light. An example of a fluorescent creature are butterflies that have fluorescent markings on their wings. Fluorescence needs an external light source whereas bioluminescence can glow in complete darkness (Radford, B. 2010). Bioluminescence has multiple uses but the main one I am focusing on is its’ use for communication as I find it interesting how these creatures, who cannot use vocal sounds, use light and movement as their way of communicating. It links to how clothing does not use sound but movement, shape, structure and texture as your communication to the audience about your garment.
Posthumanism
The idea of a “Post-Human” came into serious discussion since the 1990’s (Roden, D. 2014). Humanist philosopher, Nick Bostrom, depicts a post-human as a “being that has at least one post-human capacity” (Bostrom, N. 2008). By that, he means a being that has greatly exceeded the maximum attainability by any current, or past human being without the help of technology. This excludes record-breakers are they do not exceed far enough. Prime examples of post-humans are featured in movies such as; superheroes or immortal people.
There are multiple arguments about becoming post-human. Many philosophers, such as Aubrey de Grey, Ray Kurzweil, David Pearce and Nick Bostrom, support the idea of post-humanism. Whereas many argue that becoming post-human is far-fetched or that we will lose our sense of humanity and what it means to be human. However because being post-human is far beyond our human capacity, we do not have the mental capacity to fully understand what it would be like (Bostrom, N. 2008).
Conclusion
‘Jellyfish’ draws on both research about bioluminescence and posthumanism by imaging a negative PH world. A world where humans have lost their ways of communicating and can only understand the world through Emoji’s. This draws on conversation on how technology, especially mobile phones, are changing/replacing the way we communicate and is that a good or bad thing.

Lava plume,
Twilight jellyfish's sister she's very untrustworthy and survives the heat of sea volcanoes. She's normally only kind to her brother.
Twilight Jellyfish
Lava plume's brother, he's very shy and gentle. A hopeless romantic who drifts along with the current.

Studio: Digital Skins - Contextual Research
Bioluminescence
For studio, our main theme is experimenting with UV materials. Even though that is simply the making of our garments, the contextual side relates closely to bioluminescence and how that is used/present in animals. This made me straight away think about Jellyfish which are bioluminescent creatures and wanted to research into how/why creatures use bioluminescence.
Research:
Bioluminescence is a glow that is created when two chemicals (luciferin and either luciferase or photoprotein) react within a living organism (National Geographic, n.d).
There are bioluminescent organisms/animals on land such as Firefly’s or fungi found in rotten trees, but majority of bioluminescent beings are found in the ocean. More specifically in the “twilight” zone of the ocean. (Wilson, V. T., n.d). The twilight zone (also know as disphotic/poorly lit zone) starts 201 metres from the surface where only blue/green light is shown as it has a shorter wavelength meaning it has more energy to penetrate the water’s surface unlike other colours.
An example being the marine life emit blueish, green light because they cannot process other colours such as red or yellow.
Conclusion:
Bioluminescence has multiple uses but the main one I am focusing on is its’ use for communication. I think it’s interesting how these creatures who cannot use vocal sounds, use light and movement as their way of communicating. It also links to how on the WOW stage you cannot use sound but movement, shape, structure and texture as your communication to the audience about your garment.
