Finally finished my version of the Twisted Wonderland manga, I chose and redrew two pages. I've added some extra scenes and dialogue and I replaced Yuuken with my TWST oc Ellis! ❤
The extra dialogue and expression scenes were actually referenced off of Disney's animated Alice In Wonderland, I'll make a comparison post soon, most likely will be on tumblr but also will be shared on my IG story.
I made this to celebrate Riddle's birthday, I know its late but I'm just relieved to finally finish this piece, I hope you guys like it!❤
Certainly! Here are the two images, and Yana's original tweet can be found here.
She explains,
"This is a sketch I drew for Hazuki and Kowono when I asked them to have Yuuken hold Grim like a kendo sword. And the rough draft that I drew for how I wanted young Chenya to look as he pulled out a hedgehog. Kowono saved these at the time, so I'm sharing them."
Episode of Savanaclaw manga artist Oda Suzuka shares scenes from the manga release! (She explains that her extended hiatus was from contracting COVID. The subsequent delay is why the Episode of Octavinelle is being published before the conclusion of the Savanaclaw arc, for the curious!)
A comparison of the official English-language translation of volume 1 of the Twst manga vs. the original manga (vs. the original game vs. EN server)
(The Japanese-language manga is called THE COMIC and the English-language comic is called THE MANGA, which is cute)
EN Game: To me. To them. To yourself. The hour grows long, and time is scarce. Keep steady your grip, no matter what may come…
EN Manga: For I…and for them…and for thee…little time doth remain. Take care to never let go of that hand…
Original Game/Manga: The eggs of magic users...
EN Game: It is an institution for students...
EN Manga: …where fledgling mages...
(vol.1 of the manga changes "eggs" to "fledgling," while it was removed the main story of the game (also changed to "fledgling" in game events.))
Original Game/Manga: ...the eggs of exceptional magic users...
EN Game: My students...
EN Manga: Every student...
(vol.2 of the manga had "eggs" changed to "student" just like in the English adaptation of the game)
Original Game Prefect: A talking tanuki!?
EN Game Prefect: A talking…weasel?!
Original Manga Prefect: That tanuki is talking…!
EN Manga Prefect: That tanuki is talking…!
(Grim is temporarily drawn as a tanuki in the manga for this line, which is possibly why the word was not localized in the English-language translation of the manga)
Original Game: I'm Grim, the man who will become a great mage!
EN Game: I’m Grim, spellcaster extraordinaire!
Original Manga: I am a man who will become a great mage!! (using the kanji 男)
EN Manga: I am a monster who will become a great mage!
(An interesting change--has Grim ever referred to himself as a monster in the original game? memo: need to check)
A comparison of the official translation of volume 3 of the Twisted Wonderland manga vs. the original manga (vs. the original game vs. EN server)
Original Game/Manga Chenya: At least...I'm on a different level than you all over there.
EN Manga Chenya: At least, I'm on a different level than your average mage in training.
EN Game Chenya: Let's just say I'm not from the other side of the looking glass.
(While EN-Game Chenya's line was wholly rewritten, EN-Manga Chenya may sound as though he is insinuating that he is a particuarly powerful magic user. In the original game/manga, Chenya is just teasing the group of Ace, Deuce, Grim and the Prefect.)
Original Game/Manga Chenya: Huhuhu~n♪
(This is the sound of Chenya humming, which can also be heard in the audio)
EN Manga Chenya: And the momeraths ♪ ...OutgraaaaBe! ♪
EN Game Chenya: Ha ha ha ha...!
Original Game/Manga Trey: But...for me, I just can't scold him.
EN Manga Trey: ...I don't have the heart to scold him.
EN Game Trey: I don't think the situation calls for it.
Original Game/Manga Trey: But, for me...I just can't bring myself to scold him.
EN Manga Trey: I just can't bring myself to criticize him...!
EN Game Trey: But for me...I can't hold that against him, you know?
(Trey and Riddle's shared history was rewritten for the EN Game. It has yet to be confirmed if it will be kept in tact in the EN manga.)
Original Game/Manga Crowley: The strength of magic is the strength of imagination.
EN Manga Trey: The strength of one's magic is the strength of one's imagination.
EN Game Trey: Visualization is key to spell casting.
(The word "imagination" will sometimes be removed from the English-language game, which is interesting as the characters generally use the English-language word "imagination," which can be heard in the audio. The word is repeated often.)
Original Game/Manga Ace: And how a kid turns out isn't what decides a parent's worth.
EN Manga Ace: And you can't judge a parent's value based on how their kid turned out, either.
EN Game Ace: And the accomplishments of a child aren't determined by the worth of their parents.
(I have always wondered why this was translated backwards in the EN game.)
Original Game/Manga Riddle: Why are playing cards the only thing I can produce!
EN Manga Riddle: Why can I only conjure cards?!
EN Game Riddle: (removed)
Original Game/Manga Riddle: The only acceptable response is, "Yes, Riddle-sama!"
EN Manga Riddle: The only acceptable response is, "Yes, Lord Riddle!"
EN Game Riddle: The only response I will accept from you is, "Yes, Housewarden Riddle."
The English-language game has localized the "-sama" honorific as Mr., Master, O Great, O mighty and Count (when it does not drop it from dialogue).
Question: What is happening in the Twst Manga: Episode of Octavinelle?
The mangaka has returned to the designer/illustrator team of Kowono Sumire and Hazuki Wakana, the same pair who created Episode of Heartslabyul!
Question: What about Yuu?
We have a third Yuu! Our new protagonist is 16-year-old Mito Yuuta (三途 宥太).
His father runs a Chinese restaurant. He was on a food delivery when he was struck by NRC’s black carriage and woke up at the school’s opening ceremonies.
Just like Yuuken and Yuuka, Yuuta has already experienced Books 1 and 2.
There has been no mention of the previous Yuus.
Question: Why was Octavinelle released before Savanaclaw concluded?
We don't know! But the Savanaclaw artist did go on hiatus at one point, so that may have shifted the publishing schedule.
Question: What else is different between books?
Nothing yet! It is extremely faithful to the game, opening with Grim studying for the test, Grim/Ace/Deuce checking their scores and anemones. (Jade's scenes are amazing!)
What is happening in the Twst Manga: Episode of Savanaclaw?
Q: Who is the new Yuu and how did they retcon the story to make a new protagonist make sense?
A: The new protagonist is Hirasaka Yuuka. Whereas the previous protagonist, Yuuken, was a Japanese high school student who did kendo, she is a Japanese all-girls high school student who does judo.
She chases an abandoned cat that she was trying to help into a street and wakes up in Twisted Wonderland.
(When the cat runs into the street we see a car coming, but when Yuuka goes after it, it becomes the black carriage that goes to Twisted Wonderland, insinuating that Yuuken might have been hit by a vehicle when crossing the street as well though we never saw the vehicle in question.)
Like Yuuken, Yuuka also wakes up in a coffin that leads her to the Hall of Mirrors during the opening ceremonies. Yuuka explains in narration that she was given permission to live in Ramshackle Dorm with Grim, just like Yuuken had been, and she also experienced the Heartslabyul incident and Riddle’s overblot, off screen.
Q: So what happened to Yuuken?
A: There is no mention of him having ever existed, so this seems like an alternate timeline?
Q: Is Yuuka hiding the fact that she’s female so she can be half a student with Grim in the all-boys school?
A: It’s not specified! Grim probably knows she is female, but there is never―at any point―any mention, whatsoever, of what her gender is or isn’t. Given Leona’s canonical “Women need to be properly respected” mindset from the game it is likely to factor in later on, but as of the first chapter there is no reference to anyone's gender at all :>
Also, the mangaka has changed from Kowono Sumire to Oda Suzuka (Toboso Yana explains in this tweet that she participated in the drafting and character design herself)
Q: Why did they change artists?
A: We don’t know! But this is a pattern with Twst, first with the publishing of the Art Gallery book (Twst art by various illustrators) and then the anthology books (short comics by different illustrators), so this just seems to be their thing, possibly as a compromise as it would probably be very difficult for Toboso Yana to do the entire Twst manga while also doing all of Twst ,plus her own series.
Q: So will they change mangaka with every new arc?
A comparison of the official translation of volume 2 of the Twisted Wonderland manga vs. the original manga (vs. the original game vs. EN server)
Original Game/Manga Grim: henchman/minion/etc
EN Game Grim: Hench-human
EN Manga Grim: minion
(A small point, but the English-language translation of the manga kept the “sorry chickens” line from both the original game and the original manga, which was removed from the English-language adaptation of the game)
Original Game/Manga: Magical Wheel
EN Game: Magic Wheel (Main Story) / Blastcycle (vignettes/events)
EN Manga: Magical Wheel
Original Game/Manga: Doodle Suit (pronunciation) Let’s Paint the Roses (meaning)
EN Game: Let’s Paint the Roses
EN Manga: Doodle Suit
Original Game/Manga: ...make some tea or something to curry favor with the queen.
EN Game: ...make some tea or something, as a show of deference to the Queen.
EN Manga: ...make some tea or something, to boost the mood.
(Cater referring to Riddle as the Queen was removed from the English-language manga)
Honorifics in the Manga
Original Game/Manga Azul: Riddle-san
EN Game Azul: Riddle
EN Manga Azul: Mr. Rosehearts
Original Game/Manga Crowley: Trappola-kun, Spade-kun
EN Game Crowley: Mr. Trappola / Trappola, Mr. Spade / Spade
(This only applies to the first two books of the game. From Book 3 of EN, Crowley no longer uses honorifics.)
EN Manga Crowley: Mr. Trappola, Mr. Spade
Original Game/Manga Deuce: Diamond-senpai
EN Game Deuce: Cater
EN Manga Deuce: Mr. Diamond
Bonus:
Nicknames by Cater that are Exclusive to the English-Language Manga
・Dee-dee (Deuce)
・G-rim (Grim)
・Hey-yu (Prefect)
・Lee-lee (Lilia)
