It was discussed at the special meeting held in Parliament this afternoon (13) with the participation of the members of the Committee on Parliamentary Business and the party leaders that the Prime Minister should resign from his position as soon as possible to resolve the current crisis situation in the country. As per the media reports, all party leaders discussed the current situation in the country at length and the Chief of Defense Staff, the Commanders of the three-armed forces and the Inspector General of Police briefed the Members of Parliament about the current security situation. Speaker mentioned that the President informed him via phone that the resignation letter of the President will be submitted before 12 midnight today (July 13) as he had announced to the country, NewsWire reported. Minister of Public Security Hon. Tiran Alles, Members of Parliament Hon. Maithreepala Sirisena, Hon. Lakshman Kiriella, Hon. Hon. Anura Dissanayaka, Hon. Mano Ganesan, Hon. Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Hon. Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Hon. Douglas Devananda, Hon. Gayantha Karunatilleka, Hon. Hon. Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Hon. Gevindu Cumaratunga, Hon. Rauff Hakeem, Hon. (Dr.) V. Radhakrishnan, Hon. Udaya Gammanpila, Rev. Hon. (Ven.) Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Hon. M. A. Sumanthiran, Hon. Angajan Ramanathan, Hon. (Prof.) Tissa Vitharana marked their presence during the Party Leaders' meet in the Sri Lankan parliament. After President Gotabaya Rajapaksa escaped to the Maldives, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was made the interim President of Sri Lanka. Wickremesinghe declared an emergency and imposed a curfew in the western province of the country on July 13 as protesters came prepared to face tear gas shelling by security forces in the country. The country is facing a severe shortage of fuel and other essential supplies and is in the throes of its worst economic crisis with soaring inflation. The oil supply shortage has forced schools and government offices to close until further notice. Reduced domestic agricultural production, a lack of foreign exchange reserves, and local currency depreciation have fuelled the shortages. The economic crisis will push families into hunger and poverty - some for the first time - adding to the half a million people who the World Bank estimates have fallen below the poverty line because of the pandemic. Biden’s Russian Oil Embargo Fails
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), June 18, 2022.--All of 79-year-old President Joe Biden’s threats against he Russian Federation for its Ukraine War have backfired, with China and India, more than making up for a loss of Russian oil revenue from the U.S. and European Union [EU].  Biden pushed, cajoled and threatened any Western ally to continue buying oil from the Russian Federation, hoping the economic consequences would force the 69-year-old Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine War.  But once Biden decided to fund the Ukraine government and supply unlimited lethal weapons and cash to Ukraine, Putin understood Biden’s ultimate goal.  Biden decided, without consulting with allies, to fund a proxy war with Ukrainian troops to topple the Russian government.  No one in the EU agreed with the policy but it was already too late, with Biden delivering more lethal weapons to Ukraine to battle the Kremlin.
India’s 71-year-old Prime Minister Narendra Modi jumped at the chance to buy cheap Russian oil at a time of escalating global oil prices.  Biden shouted from every rooftop but ultimately had no clout over India and China’s appetite for oil.  India bought over 60 million barrels of oil from Russia since the Feb. 24, something eclipsing its 12 billion barrels from all of 2021.  Biden couldn’t convince India or China to stop a good thing, not necessarily because they like Putin or the Ukraine War but purely out of business.  Sri Lanka’s Oil Minister Udaya Gammanpila said he too would probably buy more oil from Russian to meet Sri Lanka’s demands.  Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said, given skyrocketing oil prices, he would be inclined to buy Russian oil to meet his country’s fossil fuel needs.  India dramatically increased its Russian crude oil purchase since the Ukraine War began.
In January and March, India had about 60,000 barrels of oil delivered from Russia.  In May and June, that number quadrupled.  “People are realizing that India is such a refining hub, taking it at such a cheap price, refining it and sending it out as clean products because they can make such strong margins on that,” said Matt Smith, lead analyst at Kpler, tracking Russian oil flows.  Smith said the Russian Urals crude now flows to India and China at unprecedented levels, completely undermining any Western sanctions on the Russian Federation.  Biden foolishly thought he could impose an oil embargo on Russia, thinking would crash the Russian economy.  Biden didn’t think through the obvious blunder to paying Ukraine to battle the Russian Federation, leaving Ukraine in ruins for the foreseeable future.  Not only has Biden destroyed Ukraine, he has wrecked the U.S. economy.
Hyperinflation has caused the Federal Reserve Board to hike rates to the point that Wall Street has been crashing for weeks, leaving the Dow Jones Industrial, Nasdaq Composition and S&P 500 down close to 25% from their January highs.  Let there be no mistake, Biden’s Ukraine War strategy has backfired, causing more damage to the U.S. and European Union [EU] economy than to Russia.  All of Biden’s tough talk about wrecking the Russian economy backfired, causing real damage to the U.S.   Watching India and China swoop up all of Russia’s crude oil should tell U.S. lawmakers that Biden’s war strategy must change before it plunges the U.S. economy into an intractable recession.  Third quarter GDP should plunge again, confirming recession in the U.S.  “We’re look to allies and partners not to increase their purchases of Russian energy,” said 59-year-old Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Biden and Blinken have been wrong about U.S. foreign policy since taking office Jan. 20, 2021.  Both have done everything possible to alienate Russia and China, driving both nuclear-powered U.S. adversaries into a strategic alliance.  China doesn’t back the Ukraine War but won’t compromise its relations with Russia because Biden threatens China with economic sanctions. China bought 1.6 million barrels of Russian oil a day, showing no signs of heeding Biden’s warnings.  Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen tried to coordinate with Western allies to set a price cap on Russian oil, something that’s done nothing to deter Moscow from selling its oil to Asian markets.  Instead of turning Russia into an active U.S. enemy, Biden should be working vigorously to end the Ukraine War and get back to some measure of diplomacy. Ukraine’s Zelensky wants to keep the fight going indefinitely.
Biden’s approach to the Ukraine War has been a complete failure, supplying Ukraine lethal weapons, hoping that it would discourage Russia from continuing the fight. But once Biden made the fight personal, saying Putin should not remain as Russian president, deciding to fight a proxy war using Ukrainian troops to fight the Russian Federation, Biden has made things far worse for Ukraine.  Biden and former President President Barack Obama poured billions for eight years into a proxy war against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, causing 500,000 deaths, 12 million refugees and practically broke the European Union. Biden’s doing the same thing in Ukraine, giving Zelensky the exact wrong approach to the Russian Federation. Zelensky has already lost so much sovereign Ukraine territory, he’s made peace negotiations next to impossible.  Biden should tell Zelensky to end the war at the earliest possible time

Fifteen-hour-long power outages to starvation: What awaits Sri Lanka as it runs out of petrol?
Tumblr media
The Sri Lanka economic crisis has reached a tipping point after newly-elected Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, on Monday, announced that the island-country was down to its last day of petrol.
In a televised address to the country, which has seen violent protests and the subsequent reluctant resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Wickremesinghe said, “At the moment, we only have petrol stocks for a single day. The next couple of months will be the most difficult ones of our lives. We must prepare ourselves to make some sacrifices and face the challenges of this period.”
What does it mean to run out of petrol? What happens to a country in such a situation? How will Sri Lanka fight this crisis? We take a look at the situation and try to answer some of these questions.
Sri Lanka’s crisis
On Monday, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the country had run out of petrol and that the residents could face more hardships in the coming months.
https://twitter.com/RW_UNP/status/1526206619595739136
The country, Wickremesinghe added, needs $75 million in foreign exchange to pay for essential imports.
The dire situation could be seen in the streets of Colombo where auto rickshaw drivers queued in serpentine queues in a fruitless wait for fuel.
“I have been in the queue for more than six hours,” one driver, Mohammad Ali told Reuters. “We spend almost six to seven hours in the line just to get petrol.”
Another driver, Mohammad Naushad said, “We’ve been here since 7-8 in the morning and it is still not clear if they will have fuel or not,” he said. “When will it come, no one knows. Is there any point in our waiting here, we also don't know.”
Sri Lanka is in the throes of its worst-ever economic crisis since its independence. The island nation’s economy has been has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy prices and populist tax cuts. A chronic shortage of foreign currency and soaring inflation had led to a severe shortage of medicines, fuel and other essentials.
Wickremesinghe said he was forced to permit printing money in order to pay state-sector employees and for essential goods and services. “However, we must remember that printing money leads to the depreciation of the rupee,” he added.
He also proposed selling off Sri Lankan Airlines as part of efforts to stabilise the nation's finances. The carrier lost 45 billion Sri Lankan rupees in the year ending March 2021.
What’s in store for Sri Lanka?
Wickremesinghe warned that residents in the country will have to endure power outages for as long as 15 hours a day.
Earlier, in March, residents were left without any power for more than 10 hours when diesel ran dry in the country. Official reports had stated then that diesel — the main fuel for buses and commercial vehicles — was unavailable at stations across the island.
Public transport services will also be heavily impacted, causing inconvenience to people. Moreover, industrial production will also be hit, owing to the lack of petrol.
The shortage of petrol will also lead to lead to the collapse of agriculture, medical services and industrial production, leading to anarchy.
Udaya Gammanpila, the former energy minister of Sri Lanka, was quoted as telling Sky News, “It’s like a man without blood, the body dies. The situation is terrible.”
Yapa Abeywardana, a politician speaking in Parliament earlier, was also quoted as saying that this is “just the beginning” and cautioned that “the food, gas and electricity shortages will get worse”, and ultimately result in “very acute food shortages and starvation”.
Is there any hope?
As the nation continues its struggles, Sri Lankan minister of power and energy Kanchana Wijesekera assured the public of adequate fuel in the country soon.
In a statement on his Twitter page, Wijesekera said that with the arrival of a diesel cargo on Sunday and three fuel vessels in the near future, adequate fuel will be made available nationwide.
https://twitter.com/kanchana_wij/status/1526060282803417088
He also requested the public not to queue or re-fill in the next three days until the fuel station deliveries are completed.
Moreover, Wickremesinghe has appealed to the world for more help, saying “there won’t be a hunger crisis, we will find food”.
India has extended a helping hand to its neighbour, providing fuel, medicine, and food items. Since April, when the crisis got out of hand, India has played the role of big brother — supplying medicines and food to providing loans and financial assistance.
