Alumni Spotlight: Jenna Grableâ11 - Working in Sports and Technology
Written by: Shannon Blatt, Special Projects Coordinator

Jenna Grable presents to students about her experience in the sports and technology industries. Image by: Marquel Plavan
There are lots of rumors out there that companies within the tech industry are great places to work. But is that really true? It is according to Jenna Grable, BA â11, an Elite Account Executive at Yelp in San Francisco. Grable spoke to students recently about her experience in both the tech and sports marketing fields.
After graduating from UD in 2014, Grable left Dallas for San Francisco to try something new. âI contacted recruiters from different job sites and set up interviews during a two week visit, which stretched to three weeks,â she said. She soon received an offer from LoopNet, a real estate company, and relocated to San Francisco.
After some time with LoopNet, Grable decided that she would indulge her real passion, baseball, and took a job with the Omaha Storm Chasers, the KC Royalsâ AAA club and the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Giantsâ AA club. âYou have to know what youâre getting into with sports marketing,â she said. âI love baseball and I loved being around the game every day. But itâs long hours and a lot of work with not so much pay.â
So although she loved the baseball life, Grable realized that her future lay in the tech industry back in San Francisco.
Grable began working for Yelp two and a half years ago and recently achieved the companyâs Presidentâs Club award for outstanding sales. She attributes her success to Yelpâs culture. âWe have an excellent, 60-day training program known throughout the industry,â she said. âAnd weâre constantly learning new things through ongoing professional development.â Grable said the team atmosphere at Yelp is such that they cheer everyoneâs successes. âIf you work hard, you get to play hard,â she said. Grable added that company-paid health insurance and even free food are a few of the many benefits that make Yelp a great company to work for.
Grable, a theology and business double-major, advised students that most tech companies will hire sales people regardless of their majors or backgrounds, as long as they meet some simple criteria. âMost companies want sales people who are competitive, persistent, coachable and, in the case of Yelp, passionate about small business,â she said.
Grable added that although some graduates might think they donât like sales, itâs worth taking a sales job to get in the door of a tech firm. âThere are so many tech start-upsâ she said. âAnd the easiest way to get in is through the sales door. Once you get your first job, you can demonstrate that you are coachable. That shows your own and future employers your potential.â
Grable encouraged anyone interested in working for Yelp or in the sports marketing field to contact her through LinkedIn.

Home Sweet Rome!
It's already getting warmer in Rome and Art decided to spend some time inside the Villa Farnesina! Located in the beautiful Trastevere district of Rome, this Renaissance Villa was built in the 16th Century for a banker named Agostino Chigi. The house is filled with frescos done by Raphael, Il Sodomo, and several other famous artists. Art's favorite room was the Hall of the Perspective Views which was designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi in 1519. #TravelingThursday in Greece! Art made it to the Acropolis of Athens! He had his picture taken in front of the Parthenon, but soon got a bit tired of the hordes of selfie-stick wielding tourists. Art then decided to get away from all the tourists and hangout at the  Erectheion instead. Also located on the Acropolis, the construction of this unique temple was completed in 406 BC. Dedicated to the gods Poseidon and Athena, the Erechtheion is famous for its porch featuring several caryatids (statues serving as columns).

Greetings from Greece! Art is sitting on Mount Parnassos and overlooking the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece, which has suffered all sorts of damage. After being built in the 7th century B.C., it had been rebuilt twice in antiquity after a fire and an earthquake, and now suffers from decay due to its soft, limestone material.Â

This week Art wanted to check out life in Southern Italy and spent a day in Palermo Sicily! After buying a few cannoli at a local pasticceria, he spent the afternoon at the Villa Giulia near the beach! Art loved all of the orange trees and the Roman Structures that decorate the park.Â

Art decided to explore the original streets of the Roman town Ostia. Located at the point where the Tiber flows into the Mediterranean, Ostia was Rome's great seaport throughout antiquity. Often called Ostia Antica, this vast archaeological site contains many well-preserved private homes as well as many examples of ancient civic and religious buildings. Art decided to spend the afternoon like any good Roman... at the Amphitheater! Caption/Photo: Charlie Sigur'18, University of Dallas Career Development Student Assistant in Ostia Antica.Â

While wandering around Rome, Art stumbled upon Piazza Navona and had a chance to gaze upon the Baroque style paintings inside the church of St. Agnes in Agony (shown on the left). This church contains an altar upon which the skull of Early Christian St. Agnes is displayed. At Long Last (Already?)
By Hunter Mills
Well, weâve done it. Somehow, the longest and shortest four years of my life have passed and graduation is only two days away. Congratulations, class of 2014! The road that got us here is paved with sweat, tears, laughter, memories, and many good books. I am incredibly grateful that I have gotten to spend the last year getting to know you, not only as fellow students, but also as readers of this blog.Â

This is the face of a college graduate, people!Â
I have learned so much in my time with the OPCD, and would like to thank Julie and Adrian for giving me this opportunity. In our archives, youâll find inspiring interviews, relevant advice, and thoughtful reflections for developing your careerâwhatever that may be. As you begin the next chapter of your journey, I hope youâll look over our blog and stay in touch.
