Jurassic Beast Sportive

I would normally give this sportive a miss, given that it’s on roads and lanes that I would normally be cycling along myself. However, its proximity and great scenery made it perfect to cover in the project.

The weather was dry with a fresh northeasterly breeze. I arrived at the published registration start time of 07:15 but there were hundreds there already; looked like it as a popular event. I later enquired and was told there were 1800 entrants booked on the 3 distance rides of 99, 63 and 36 miles with elevation challenges of 7250, 3330 and 1722 feet respectively; all routes took in the long 600 feet climb to the top of Purbeck Hills.

The queue for the many loos at the start was longer than that for coffee! The coffee was very good. Otherwise, the Sportive was the usual stuff of registration, start, ride with feed stops en route, finish, coffee. I chose the Purbeck Hill for the mid event coverage point. A group of Bath Cycling Club ladies seemed to have gate-crashed the event. The description of the longer (epic) event on the UK Cycling Events website is as follows below. I spoke to one early finisher who had travelled down for the weekend from London with family and pledged to do a longer distance next year. Perhaps I will enter too!

With a mixture of spectacular views, leg-pumping climbs and historical scenery, the Wiggle Jurassic Beast Sportive has become a ‘must do’ ride for many cyclists and one of the most popular events in our sportive calendar. Starting out at the National Tank Museum in Bovington, Epic riders split straight away as the route heads north and up through a series of unspoilt Dorset villages, skirting around the base of menacing-looking hills in the region, throwing in a short and sharp climb every now and again. Continuing on, the next spike in gradient will follow just a few miles later, just before Shillingstone, followed by another as you head towards Ansty Cross. Pushing on through Dorset, you’ll continue to ride through the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and tackle another series of short and steep climbs. Soon enough, it’s time to head towards the coast and take in the terrific views of Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove and Poole Harbour that the Jurassic Beast sportive is renowned for. Views stretch out towards the Isle of Wight and make up for the up-and-down nature of the final few miles. Don’t miss this Sportive – it’s a ride worth taking.
