Donald Glover : Me And Your Marvel

Donald Glover, Childish Gambino, mcDJ … Tant de noms pour une seule et même personne. Un artiste qui mélange l’humour et la politique à la perfection. Acteur et chanteur, scénariste et humoriste, il a à de nombreuses reprises collaboré avec Marvel au long de sa carrière. Cet univers étant très inspirant pour Glover, vous pourrez apercevoir son nom dans beaucoup de credits au fil des productions, mais aussi dans des easter-eggs. Mais qui est Donald Glover, et de quelle manière a t-il séduit les studios Marvel ?

I) Because The Community

Donald Glover se fait connaître grâce au rôle principal de Troy Barnes dans la sitcom Community où il dévoile ses talents de scénariste et d’acteur. En parallèle, il s’essaie au rap et devient l’un des rappeurs les plus influents, Childish Gambino. Il sera alors qualifié de « figure incontournable de la pop culture  » et sortira des classiques musicaux tels que Redbone ou encore This Is America. Il ne s’arrête pas là puisque qu’il rencontre un grand succès grâce à sa série Atlanta et obtient des rôles principaux dans les blockbusters Seul Sur Mars (2015), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) et Le Roi Lion (2019). Childish Gambino se démarque par sa folie, ses danses exagérées et ses messages politiques forts. On notera la dénonciation du droit au port d’armes dans This Is America, le réchauffement climatique dans Feels Like Summer ou encore le racisme dans sa pièce de théâtre Black Peter Pan, qui montre des enfants ayant peur d’un Peter Pan noir.

II) Spiderpants

Donald Glover et Spider-Man, une grande histoire d’amour. En 2011, la saga Ultimate Comics offre la possibilité d’un reboot du personnage de Spider-Man. Brian Michael Bendis et Sara Pichelli créent alors un tout nouveau personnage, Miles Morales. Ce dernier est un jeune noir latino, qui suite à une piqûre d’araignée, devient le nouveau Spider-Man. Morales connaît un succès monstre, et obtient son film d’animation en 2018, Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse. Si le nouveau Spider-Man est noir, c’est parce-que le scénariste Bendis a été très inspiré par une célèbre scène de la série Community, où Donald Glover revêt le costume de Spider-Man. La personnalité de Miles Morales est donc très inspirée de celle de Glover et de son personnage de Troy.

Suite à l’annonce d’un reboot de la saga Spider-Man de Sam Raimi, internet s’enflamme et lance le #DonaldForSpiderMan afin de militer pour que l’acteur puisse interpréter le personnage dans The Amazing Spider-Man. Cependant le rôle fut donné à Andrew Garfield, à la grande déception des fans de Glover et de lui-même. Ce dernier ne se découragea pas pour autant puisqu’il double Miles Morales dans la série animée Ultimate Spider-Man, et devient l’interprète son oncle Aaron Davis dans le Marvel Cinematic Universe. De plus, il travaille sur le scénario de Black Panther avec son frère Stephen, où les deux ajoutent des scènes comiques au métrage. Un easter egg est présent dans le film Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse, où Aaron Davis regarde l’épisode de Community où Glover se munit du costume de Spider-Man, afin de rappeler que Miles Morales n’existerait sûrement pas sans lui.

III) The Night Me and Deadpool Met

En 2017, suite au succès du personnage de Deadpool et dans l’intention de développer des séries télévisées Marvel, FFX (chaîne adulte de la Fox) commande le premier animé centré sur le personnage. Donald Glover et son frère Stephen sont annoncés comme producteurs et créateurs de la série. Deadpool: The Animated Series est décrite comme très violente, gore, abordant des sujets très tabous, et Donald Glover exprime son souhait de trouver un acteur ayant un ton différent de celui de Ryan Reynolds pour doubler son personnage, afin de rendre la série plus atypique et exceptionnelle. Ce dernier qualifie même Donald Glover de génie sur twitter, et exprime son impatience de découvrir la série le jour de sa sortie.

Néanmoins, la série est annulée près d’un an plus tard, en 2018, pour des raisons de différents créatifs. En réaction à cela, Donald Glover s’est révolté et a dévoilé sur Twitter le script entier de la série, racontant l’histoire de Deadpool en voyage au Kenya pour protéger des rhinocéros blancs. Un discours dénonçant la maltraitance animale, toujours avec un univers atypique à celui du mutant mercenaire. Cependant suite à de nombreuses pressions de la part de la Fox, le script ainsi que ses reproches envers le studio furent rapidement supprimés de son compte. Dans ses tweets, Donald Glover accuse la Fox de racisme, ajoutant qu’ils ne souhaitaient pas laisser les commandes d’une série centrée sur un personnage blanc à des personnes noires, puisqu’il y avait beaucoup de références à la culture afro dans les blagues des frères Glover.

En effet, cela soulève un point très intéressant. Les films centrés sur des blancs sont dans la forte majorité des cas confiés à des personnes blanches. Les films centrés sur des noirs confiés à des noirs. Les films sur des asiatiques à des asiatiques, etc. C’est par exemple le cas de Get Out ou encore Shang-Chi et la Légende des Dix Anneaux. Est-ce pour autant un mal ? Oui et non. D’un côté cela engendre beaucoup plus de représentation, les réalisateurs noirs les plus connus et récompensés étant très minoritaires (Spike Lee, Ryan Coogler, Jordan Peele ...) De plus, la culture est traitée de façon pertinente puisque ces réalisateurs racontent leur vécu. Mais d’un autre côté, cela pose des problèmes de communautarisme excessif et de discriminations. Or si la culture d’une population n’est pas au centre du scénario, la couleur de peau du réalisateur n’a objectivement aucune importance ! Hollywood se montre encore et toujours très fermé quant au fait de laisser le talent s’exprimer à la place du physique, et cela est un réel problème à dénoncer.

Donald Glover est très engagé politiquement. En plus de proposer du contenu original, il inspire et invite au progrès. Ryan Coogler, réalisateur de Black Panther, dira même de lui qu’il est capable de repousser les limites dans bon nombre de domaines sans difficulté. Quoi qu’il en soit, espérons que la relation entre Glover et Marvel dure de nombreuses années encore !
