It’s all too much, by night
or day---too big, too true. Flat on our backs
on the rooftops of our own lives, shivering,
talking to whoever we talk to when the hour’s
late, it’s hard to locate even ourselves, let
alone tell someone else where to look.

Beaver Tail in Yakima River Canyon / 雅基馬河谷裏的海狸尾
Today we sought out Beaver Tail in the Yakima River Canyon. So we could avoid the rain. But it made for a perfect cool-down hike from Thursday’s trip. The pups and I were just here in April, going up to Rattlesnake Dance Ridge.

spring birding spitballing:
i’m assuming most of the spring birding festivals are gonna get cancelled, at this point, and that air travel will at the very least be heavily discouraged come May.
this is not the worst fate—my own corner of the world has a perfectly spectacular spring migration of its own
and i am lowkey curious if this will drive birders to spots they normally would overlook. like, Umtanum Road tends to be the place folks go for spring woodpeckers/warblers around here, but i’ve always thought Swakane Canyon was just as good and only a little bit further, and most importantly—no one is ever there when i’ve been there. seems like a good spot to do some Looking At Birds While Maintaining Social Distance
(i had also been toying with the idea of doing an eastern Oregon trip this spring, but the logistics of that get a little trickier—i can do a daytrip anywhere in WA easily without involving anyone else; just get in a car and go. Oregon would involve car-camping of some sort, and hotels might be right out? and it may not be worth the hassle even if there is a viable & responsible way to make it work)
i’m fortunate that my partner-in-crime is also a birder; should be fun to scope out some new spots together~

The western blue flag, Iris missouriensis, is absolutely gorgeous this time of year! I found these ones near Umtanum Creek Falls near Ellensburg, WA. Like a lot of plants in the Iridaceae family, these irises are bitter and somewhat poisonous, so cattle ranchers tend to view them as a weed - and they used to be used by the Navajo as an emetic! If they make humans throw up, it’s no wonder cattle don’t like them.
