sorry, but i have to agree with the prev anon who mentioned that tagging art of a character who has prosthetics as body horror is ableist. i already knew about the au from the op and when i saw that tag on your post my feelings were hurt. even though the character lost their limbs in a violent way i don't think that necessitates tagging their body afterwards as body horror when the body horror itself is not being depicted. i really respect what you do to help share fanart but your overly aggressive response to that person feels off the cuff this time. you don't have to publish this btw, you can do whatever you want on your blog as our opinions don't control you et cetera but i wish you'd take a step back and re-examine your initial defensive response and maybe consider changing your mind some day

Prosthetics aren't body horror and aren't why I used the tag. I tagged body horror because Shen Jiu's arms were violently ripped off and that was explicitly mentioned in the text of that post. If someone posted art of someone with prosthetics with a sword through their chest, I'd tag that body horror too, cause I always tag artwork with "weapons actively inserted in someone's body" as body horror, just as I've always tagged "canon Shen Jiu dismemberment" as body horror, in a standard I've used for three years running this blog so that people can avoid content referencing dismemberment, a pretty major trigger.

I can, and do, apologize that my decision hurt feelings.

But I will not remove a tag for body horror from a post that shows a character emaciated from starvation and explicitly says their limbs were torn off. That's. That's body horror.

You want to know what I did that was ableist? I wrote that whole other post, and after I hit "post" I read it again and I'd said something like "when Shen Jiu got his body back but scars show where the damage was..." and I was like wow. Fuck, me. That's some bullshit way to phrase that, losing his limbs doesn't mean he lost his body. So I immediately edited the post. Because ew. I hate that I wrote that, that I thought that, before I checked myself. I can be ableist, as can anyone, and I can admit that I've said and done ableist things, and correct myself when I'm wrong, and I do and will continue to do my best.

But I can't do anything about people interpreting my behavior, actions, and explanations in bad faith. There was body horror in that picture with the depiction of starvation and in the post text where Shen Jiu having his limbs ripped off was mentioned. There's not in this gorgeous art of the same au, and so I didn't use the tag. Nor did I tag this other lovely art of prosthetics on Shen Jiu by a different artist as body horror, because it didn't directly reference the act that led to the loss of limbs. Because, as I said, prosthetics aren't body horror and aren't why I used the tag.

I really can't help what assumptions others make about me, and I especially can't help you persisting in that assumption in the face of my explanation. The moment you and the other anon came at me with "you did this because..." instead of "why did you do this...?" I was put in an impossible situation. I can't dispell your views of me without sounding defensive, even tho you've both ascribed motives/explanations to my behavior that are demonstratively false.

The Discord we run, one of the main ways we chat is every Wednesday we do a group chat called "What We're Reading Wednesday." And we basically do this! We each just chat about what we've read, and we say as much or as little as we want. If multiple people have read something that comes up, they'll often break off and chat about it.

It's been really nice and motivating for me to know like. If I read things and talk about it, at least someone will be interested in what I'll say afterwards.

There's also a community on Pillowfort called Bookworms that also does a weekly Wednesday thing, called WWW Wednesday, where everyone who feels like it answers three questions: what are you currently reading; what have you recently finished; and what will you read next?

dunno if any of this is helpful but. there are definitely casual book-clubby options out there, and I've absolutely been making more friends by being involved with both of the above!

The desire to join a book club and make new friends and be social vs. Wanting to read what I want, when I want, at the pace that I want, without the pressure of deadlines

So yeah you can tell where I ran out of ideas when you see the pile of Yoko Tsuno comics I added even though I had already added my favs earlier...

Mid-Year Duck Prints Press Storygraph Challenge Update

I’ve been meaning to post a reminder that our Storygraph challenge is ongoing, and a specific update on my personal progress, for a while, and a week before Pride Month starts strikes me as as good a time as any to go HEY, WE’VE GOT A CHALLENGE TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO READ QUEER BOOKS!

So, hey! We’ve got a challenge to encourage people to read queer books! It’s the Duck Prints Press 2025 Queer Book Challenge on Storygraph, and it’s open for everyone to participate! It’s composed of 40 challenges – one required (it’s “read a queer book”) and all the rest bonus for the fun of it. If you haven’t joined us already, I hope you’ll consider doing so. The challenge runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31, so everything you’ve read this year – even before you joined! – can count for filling the prompts.

For fun, I decided to make a bingo card, with the 40 prompts + 2 free spaces to get it square.

14. Hello there! I've read a lot of fics where WangJi gets cursed with a truth spell or similar and he has to, like, speak his mind and can't shut up. But!!! I haven't read any with a cursed Wei WuXian! And I think it would be hilarious! I'm between books right now.

The one I just finished, The Fall of the House of Tatterly by Shanna Miles, was recommended to my wife and I by Anna-at-the-bookstore. It's a middle grade novel with a 12-year-old Black boy as the main character. It's very hard to find books with Black boy leads, and Anna-at-the-bookstore knows we have an almost-nine-year-old biracial son, so she thought it'd be up our alley. I read it without my son (it's still a bit hard for him) and enjoyed it.

I'm about to start Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle. Everyone I know who has read it, loved it, and I've been trying to convince my book club to read it for like a year, and I've decided to go for it without them.

Fascinatingly enough, at 746 kudos, What I Will Take has almost half the kudos than my number one here, which is the part two of the same series! Why do people kudos part one less? Is it because part one is rated E and people don't click kudos on that, or did they just read them in one go and then only kudosed the second one, or did people actually just read part 2 on its own for some reason, or is there some other reason I can't think of? I'd love a whole academic survey on this topic xDxD

My podfic of @aeternumregina's Leo Inter Serpentes part 1! Sucks that jkr is such a bigot (I mean, also obviously for the bigotry reasons), because I love the fic series and I'd love to continue my podfic, but I'm just obviously not going to do that and post anything HP related now. I Can't Think Straight, a The Old Guard college AU! As it's completely AU, you don't need any fandom knowledge to read this. Not even a year old, my Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Time Travel fic visions of a future past has already gotten 64 bookmarks! (Edit: checking my stats page, where it shows the total amount of public+private bookmarks, it actually has 117 bookmarks, making it my third most kudosed fic! Ignoring translations and draft piles with several different works, my fifth longest fanfic is Endgame at precisely 20k words! It's part 4 of A Heistwives Kinda Job, my Lou x Debbie retelling of Ocean's 8 from 2018! I know I have older fics than that, but this series feels really ancient to me xD

Least words

I thought for sure it was going to be a long list of all of my drabbles (100 words exactly), but apart from podfics and manips/artworks, my shortest work is actually a Good Omens ficlet of 66 words! Unfinished Business, a Crowley x Aziraphale Wing fic :) there's also a longer 666 words long version of the story, like most of my fics in the fandom I always tried to get that exact demonic number :D

The only public fandom server I'm part of for Chinese media (...virtually the only public fandom server I'm in at all, and my personal main hang-out spot on Discord...) is @merinnan et al's Daomu Biji server.

It's the nicest, chillest, most welcoming public fandom server I've ever been in - not that we haven't had our moments of drama, but they've been rare, and I've always felt comfortable there - and I've made a lot of friends too. That said, if you're not into DMBJ and/or as obsessed with Zhu Yilong as I am, I can't imagine it'd be a great fit.

Also, so - I'm @unforth, and my day job is that I own and operate an indie micropress, Duck Prints Press, that publishes original work by fanartists and fanauthors. As part of that, I and the staff involved with that run a "Book Lover's" Discord server. While it's sort of a combo "about the Press" and "about all queer books" and "about whatever we feel like talking about" server, we do end up talking about danmei a fair amount because multiple of the people involved in the Press, including obviously me, are into that kind of thing. Like we do a weekly chat on Wednesday about what we're reading and yesterday's was like, "here's one mlm YA book! here's a thriller in Dutch! here's the Yuri manga I just read! And here are the eighteen bajillion things we're all currently reading on Bilibili oh and I started Poyun." You're certainly welcome to join us. What we talk about there really boils down to what the people who are there want to talk about, ya know?

About a million years ago, I started building a cnovelartreblogs Discord server myself, but I've been so frackin busy the last couple years that I've never managed to finish setting it up the way I'd like. That said, it's got penciled in rules and channels for some of the more popular cnovel fandoms (mostly danmei, tho there is a Please Don't Laugh section). If I could get help moderating it, I could open it.

I just really don't have the ability to do it myself anymore, my days right now are like:

wake up

scroll tumblr and do upkeep on the art side blogs (while sitting with my kids and helping them get ready for the day) (1.5 hrs or so)

study Chinese (while sitting with my kids and helping them get ready for the day (.5 hrs, tho I wish it was more, if I can manage more than 30 minutes then I can actually try reading a real damn book but I only have the time maybe once or twice a month)

work (7 to 8 hours on weekdays, often more on the weekends, bonus if my kids are around and my wife is at work, such as tomorrow)

try to be a good mom (all the hours)

errands, chores, kid after school activities, etc. (1 to 3 hours a day)

read while snuggling kids on the couch and trying to ignore the tv (an hour if I'm lucky)

sleep (8ish hours, I hope)

there's just no wiggle room left for me to do any extra fandom stuff right now, sigh.

(sorry to whine about that part. it's not relevant. I just got my covid booster yesterday and I feel terrible today so I'm feeling sorry for myself. it's truly not a bad life overall I'm just perpetually exhausted)
