Hike the Y Trail
Hike the Y Trail: A Classic Provo Adventure
The Y Mountain Trail, commonly known as the Hike the Y Trail, is one of the most popular and iconic hikes in Provo, Utah. This steep but rewarding trail leads hikers to the large white “Y” on the mountainside, offering stunning views of Utah Valley and a unique historical landmark. Whether you're a BYU student, a local resident, or a visitor, this short yet challenging hike is a must-do experience.
Quick Facts About the Y Trail
Location: Provo, Utah
Trail Length: 2.4 miles round-trip
Elevation Gain: 1,074 feet
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult (due to steep incline)
Estimated Time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Pet-Friendly: Yes, dogs are allowed on a leash
History of the Y on Y Mountain
The white “Y” on the mountainside represents Brigham Young University (BYU) and has been a symbol of school pride since 1906. Originally, students planned to create “BYU” on the mountain, but due to the size and effort required, only the “Y” was completed. Today, it is maintained with fresh paint and is illuminated for special events, making it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Utah Valley.
Trail Description and Hiking Experience
The Hike the Y Trail is a well-maintained but steep dirt path consisting of 12 switchbacks leading to the “Y.” Here’s what to expect:
Trailhead & Parking
The Y Trailhead is located at 3650 N 1450 E, Provo, UT.
A parking lot and restrooms are available at the trailhead.
The trail is clearly marked and well-traveled.
The Ascent
The first few switchbacks are steep, and the incline remains consistent throughout the hike.
The path is wide and easy to follow, though loose gravel in some areas may require caution.
Benches and rest spots are placed along the way for breaks.
Reaching the “Y”
The giant concrete “Y” is 380 feet tall and 130 feet wide.
Hikers can sit or walk on the “Y” (but should be cautious as the slope is steep).
From the top, enjoy breathtaking views of Provo, Utah Lake, and surrounding mountains.
Best Times to Hike the Y Trail
Spring & Fall: Ideal weather, with moderate temperatures and colorful scenery.
Summer: Hot temperatures—hike early in the morning or evening.
Winter: The trail can be icy and slippery; use caution and wear proper gear.
Sunrise & Sunset: Some of the best views and cooler temperatures.
Tips for Hiking the Y Trail
Bring plenty of water—there is no water source along the trail.
Wear good hiking shoes—the steep incline can be tough on the legs.
Use sunscreen and a hat—there is very little shade on the trail.
Pace yourself—the incline is demanding, so take breaks if needed.
Be mindful of the descent—going downhill can be tough on the knees.
Conclusion
The Hike the Y Trail is a classic Provo experience that combines history, fitness, and breathtaking views. While challenging, the reward at the top makes it a memorable and iconic adventure for locals and visitors alike. Whether you're hiking for school spirit, exercise, or just to enjoy Utah’s stunning landscapes, the Y Trail is a must-do hike in the area.
So lace up your hiking boots, grab some water, and take on the challenge of hiking to the Y!

SHATTERED MIRRORS ━ J. FRASER
SYNOPSIS → in which it’s been five years and life continues throw surprises
WORD COUNT → 3650 words
WARNINGS → angst; shouting, abusive husband, mention of abuse, abuse, fist fights, acholic, fluff; reunion, happy tears, SMUT!, fingering, penetration, multiple orgasms, oral sex (female receiving)
AUTHORS NOTE → this isn’t based off any episode! it’s just something that popped in my head! also, reader is brianna’s parent in this!
there is hardly anything in this that resembles events in the show. i wanted the reader to be different from claire, i wanted them to have their own backstory. so, everything that happened to claire and in the show is seldom represented in this!
MO GHRADH → my love
You were pushing your through the crowd, your purse flung over your shoulder. You were in the most crowded city in all of the United States, New York City. The city that never sleeps, causing you to never sleep.
You moved there a little over two years ago. Brianna had only been three years old at the time, and barely remembered New Orleans, where you last lived.
You had been offered an amazing job, something that you had dreamed about ever since you were little. It was something that you had wanted before you met the love of your life. Before you accidentally sent yourself back to the 1700’s and met Jamie Fraser, your husband.
Well, your ex husband now.
You can’t exactly be married to someone dead, can you?
It’s been more than five years since you last saw your late husband, and you missed him terribly. Twas the night before Culloden, the damned war that took you from him, that he had gathered a horse, and rode to Craigh na dun. You didn’t really like remembering that day, you hated having to think about your husband forcing you to touch the stone and take you back to the 2000’s. To protect you. To protect Brianna.
You shook your head, pushing the memories into the deep crevice of your head. You couldn’t afford to think of him anymore.
Thomas always seemed to know when you did. You weren’t willing to risk Brianna. Not when his temper only seemed to be getting worse, with the help of the alcohol.
You were practically running home, you had accidentally stayed at work longer than you meant to. Leaving Brianna alone, with Thomas.
You didn’t trust that man at all.
When you first married him, you both had been so in love. You two had been childhood friends, both of your parents practically betting on the relationship. When you had gotten married, you both had your honeymoon in Scotland. For the first two weeks it had been amazing. You two went anywhere and everywhere. The last stop you two had was to Craigh na dun; Thomas had heard about the stories surrounding the group of rocks, and wanted to investigate. You were up there for at least an hour, then you heard the whispers.
The rock that stood the tallest was calling you.
You didn’t really remember what happened next. Only you touching the rock, the world turning black, then shortly after, the shouts of your name from your husband.
When you woke, you were in the same place, only three hundred years in the past.
You spent the next two years living in the 1740’s. Making a family for yourself. The first year you had been determined to make it back to Thomas, but after your multiple failed attempts of escape, you had given up. Well, sort of. Every once in a while you had attempted, but every single time Jamie caught you.
It had been like a game for him. He was the first to notice you missing, and the only to ever search for you.
You had only stopped after Jack Randall “claimed” you. The British soldier had demanded your presence at his manor, claiming that he had more questions for you. Dougal Mackenzie - Jamie’s uncle - had come with the solution that you would marry. Jamie was the first to volunteer, so he became your husband.
You had been furious, at first, but you soon came to love him.
During your time with Jamie, you had fallen for the red-haired Scott. You loved the way that he was so loyal, and kind. You loved that he would get flustered at the beginning of your marriage. You loved him.
And the fact that you had to leave him to die, broke you.
The night before Culloden, Jamie had taken you to Craigh na dun and had you press your hand to the stone. No matter how much you cried, or how you begged. Jamie had held your hand tightly in his, and walked to the stones. Your back had been pressed up against your chest, and you sobbed, desperately trying to get out of his grip.
He whispered one last, “I love ye,” in your ear before pressing your hand into the stone; sending you back.
After that, everything had changed.
You had noticed the change in Thomas as soon as you woke up. The light in his eyes was completely gone, leaving only cruelty. He had been cruel ever since, but he still made you come home with him, claiming that he was your husband and you had nowhere else to go.
For the last five years, you’ve been miserable. For the last few years, you’ve been living only for your daughter. And that’s been enough.
“Dammit!” you yelped, watching as your purse fell from your shoulder and onto the cement floor, all of your belongings scattering.
You dropped down onto the floor, shoveling everything into the bag as quickly as possible. You didn’t really feel like being trampled by assholes. You were so busy reaching for everything, you didn’t notice as someone dropped down next to you.
“You really need to be more careful, lass.”
You froze, your entire body tensing up. Oh great, I’ve lost my goddamn mind.
You slowly turn your head to the voice, your eyes as wide as saucers. Tears filled your eyes, staring at the blue eyes that you had longed for. Your hands shook around your purse, pressing it against your chest as you stumbled to your feet, “No,” you muttered, eyes still locked on his, “no no no no no no, this isn’t happening.”
Jamie Fraser, the love of your life, the man who you thought dead, stood up. His blue eyes stared into your own, he was looking at you as if you were a skittish animal. You probably resembled one with the way you were backing up from him, your eyes as wide as a tea cup.
“Mo ghràdh,” he said, his hands raised in a mocking semblance of surrender.
You threw up a hand, asking - pleading - him to be quiet, “Oh god, I’m losing my damn mind,” you whispered.
Still, you couldn’t draw your eyes away from him. You desperately wanted this to be real, you wanted to jump in his arms and never leave, but but-
But it wasn’t.
It couldn’t be.
Jamie had died on Culloden.
This had to be some kind of sick - sick - joke.
“Y/N, mo ghràdh,” he whispered, walking towards you, “it’s me, I promise ye.”
“No,” you snapped, “Jamie Fraser died a long time ago. Whatever sick joke this is, it’s not funny.”
Tears started to stream down your cheeks; everything was getting too overwhelming. It was like a ginormous wave was crashing on you, pressing you under its depths, drowning you.
“Y/N-” he started, walking towards you only to get cut off by a shriek.
A high-pitched shriek that you would recognize anywhere; Brianna. You spun around, your eyes - if even possible - growing wider with every passing second. Your daughter was pressed against the chest of Thomas, his carmel brown darkening with anger.
“Tho-thomas,” you stuttered, “no.”
He didn’t listen to you, instead he turned around, and walked away - with Brianna in his arms.
“No, god no,” you gasped.
“Mama!” Brianna shrieked, her head popping over Thomas’ shoulder. Her blue eyes - much like her fathers - shined with tears, and her arms were reaching towards you. Her bright red hair clung onto her cheeks, sticking to the few tears that had slipped.
Your heart broke.
Not a second later, your feet moved without you thinking. You ran towards your daughter, your purse long forgotten on the floor. The sidewalk that you were on was practically empty, most everyone already home.
“Thomas!” you shouted desperately, “Thomas stop!”
You heard the pounding of feet behind you, and you felt your heart drop to your stomach.
If Thomas was to see reason, Jamie - if it was Jamie - couldn’t be near him.
You threw out your arm, shoving into Jamie’s chest. “NO!” you screamed, watching as your husband sped off in his car, your daughter in the backseat. “Brianna!”
All you could watch as they drove away. As soon as the car was out of sight, you were sobbing. Your body bends forward with the pain of it. Your hands pressed up against your chest. Oh god, it felt like you were going to break.
“What did you do?” you sobbed, spinning on Jamie. He was staring down the road, where the car had disappeared. You had no idea how long he had been in the future, so you had no idea if he knew what was happening.
“What did I do?” he snapped, his blue eyes turning to you. “Why wouldn’t ye let me chase after her?”
“Because,” you screamed, “if you hadn’t interfered it would’ve been fine!”
“Y/N!” he boomed, “Ye told me he would care for ye! What in the Lord’s name was that?” You didn’t pay him anymore mind, instead, starting the trek back to your home. “Where are ye going!”
“To get my daughter back!” you scream, and march off, not sparing him another look.
The usual 15 minute walk turned into a five minutes. You were running the whole way, desperate to get to your daughter.
You didn’t know how far Thomas would go in his rage, and you didn’t want Brianna anywhere near him. You could only hope that he hadn’t done anything yet.
You turned onto your block, and forced yourself to sprint the rest of the way. Thomas’ car was in the driveway; empty. The door to your home was closed, and all of the blinds were drawn. Dread filled you to the brim, the fear of your daughter being hurt was something that you never had felt before.
Sure, you had always worried about her when she was alone with him, but never feared for her life. But now, it was all you could think of. What if he went too far? What if he was so far in a rage he didn’t realize the force behind his hits?
You raced up the steps, and forced yourself through the door.
The house was silent, not a single sound was heard.
You panted as you stood in the entryway of your home.
“Bree?” you said, stepping further into the house, and shutting the door behind you. “Thomas? Are you here?”
Fear pumped through you.
“Thomas? Please, I know you’re angry,” you whispered, the silence of the home making your voice echo. “But don’t take it out on her. She doesn’t know. Please, Thomas.”
Nothing happened.
No sound.
No light.
Nothing.
“Tommy, please.”
The footsteps sounded to your left, light thudding echoing. “You know, Y/N, I was really starting to believe you. I thought that you had finally let go of that bastard,” Thomas snarled, his brown eyes staring at you in contempt. His hair was messed up, and rumpled. His clothes were wrinkled, and had rips in them. But it wasn’t his appearance that bothered you; it was the little girl - your little girl - sobbing as he held on tightly to her wrist.
Brianna was staring at you, her eyes filled with tears, and a growing red mark on her cheek. You stared at your daughter, anger and fear pumping.
“Let her go,” you snarled.
Almost immediately, his hand was off her wrist, and she was running to you. You fell to your knees, pulling her tightly into your chest. Your arms wrapped around her back, pressing her into you. Your hand laid on the small of her back, and your other hand held the back of her head. You felt her tears fall onto your neck, and your heart broke.
“Shhh shh sh,” you whispered in her ear, pressing a kiss to her head, “you’re okay, you’re okay. I’m here now.” You sat there for what felt like forever, before you pushed her back from your chest to look at her. Your hands framed her face and you pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Alright baby, I need you to go outside for a minute, okay?”
“But-” she cried, her face scrunching up.
“No, it’s okay, it’s okay,” you whispered, “I’ll be out there in just a minute, okay?”
Reluctantly, she walked towards the door, glancing at you and Thomas a few times before she shut the door behind her.
You just stared at Thomas.
He was so different from the man you fell in love with.
But so were you.
You weren’t that naive little girl when you first married him.
“You hit her?” you asked.
He shrugged his shoulders. How fucking dare he.
“She wouldn’t shut up,” he said.
Oh.
You were going to kill him.
“You bastard,” you snarl. “How fucking dare you?”
“Excuse me-?”
“You heard me.”
All of the anger, the fear, the realization that Jamie wasn’t dead, all of it came rushing out.
Tears poured down your cheeks, and curses left your lips.
Thomas stared at you, fury burning behind his eyes.
But you couldn’t find it in you to care. All of that fear of him just burned away into anger.
“Why Thomas!?” you screamed, “Why?”
“Why what?” he shouted back.
“Why would you do this!”
The air evaporated from the room. Everything went silent.
Fuck.
His eyes burned with fury.
Nobody moved for a minute.
Then stormed towards you, and slapped you. The back of his palm slamming into your cheek. Your head snapped to the left, a strangled gasp leaving your lips.
You didn’t have time to recover before a fist slammed into your stomach.
You doubled over, arms wrapping around yourself.
You fell onto the floor with the next hit, a grunt leaving your lips.
It felt like hours that this went on but it could’ve only been hours.
Just when you felt like you couldn’t take it any more, it stopped.
You could hear people grunting, and someone shouting, but you couldn’t bring yourself to think.
Just as you were about to lose the fight for consciousness, you felt gentle hands wrapping around you and someone tucking you into their chests.
“Ye’re gonna be alright, lass,” they whispered.
You woke with a gasp, your body jolting forward. Your eyes shot open and you clutched the blanket to your chest.
“Ah,” you whisper.
Your side was killing you.
You lift the blanket just a tad, to look at your side.
Oh shit.
Your clothes that you had on, the modern clothes, had been changed into a nightgown that you hadn’t seen in five years.
“What the fuck?” you whisper, still staring at yourself.
Why were you wearing this?
Hell, where did it even come from?
“Ah, ye’re awake then,” a voice said from the door.
Your head snapped to the sound. Tears immediately filled your eyes at the sight.
“Jenny.”
The woman who you had seen as a sister stood in the doorway, a pile of clothes in her arms. Clothes that you hadn’t worn in half a decade. Her beautiful brown hair was thrown up in her usual bun, her dark blue eyes shone with her usual knowing gaze. Her lips were pressed into a deep frown, but she stared at you with something that you couldn’t understand.
“Aye, lassie,” she said, her voice almost sending you to tears. God, you’ve missed her. “Jamie showed up with ye in his arms, and ye’re little girl in his hands.”
Brianna.
The sound of your daughter’s name sent you hurling from the bed - no matter the pain that resonated through your side. “Where is she?” you gasped, “Where’s Brianna?” You grasped onto the wall next to the bed, keeping yourself on your feet. You struggled, your legs were shaking so much that you could hardly feel them. “Where’s Brianna!”
“Lass,” Jenny started, rushing over to you, dropping the clothes that she was holding on the floor. “Lass calm yerself, Brianna is fine.”
Still you started to force yerself away from the wall, desperate to see your daughter yourself. You tried to walk around Jenny, but she wrapped her arms around your torso. She started to drag you back to the bed, but you struggled.
“Let go, Jenny!”
“Shh, lassie, you’ll wake the bairns!”
Yet, you couldn’t find it in you to care. You needed to see your daughter!
“BRIANNA!”
You fought against Jenny, swinging your body. You had forgotten how strong the woman was.
You were so occupied with fighting against your sister-in-law that you hadn’t noticed Jamie slamming into the room, his eyes wild. Jenny held you tightly against her chest, staring at her younger brother.
He walked towards you - you still hadn’t seen him.
You felt Jenny’s grip loosen slightly, but before you could take your chance, you’re being pushed into another chest. You pressed against their chest with your hands, desperately trying to push away from them.
You just want to see your daughter.
You have to make sure she’s okay!
You beat your fists against them, and kicked your legs out at their knees. As you fought, you heard the sound of the wooden door shutting, then the tell-tale sound of it locking.
Oh god-
“Mo ghràdh,” they whispered - Jamie - in your ear, “calm yerself. Brianna is alright.”
You sobbed, your knuckles turning white with the pressure of your fist. Your body shook in his hold, “How could this happen?”
Jamie pulled you flat into his chest, gripping the back of your head. You stood there for however long, and you soaked up every ounce of it.
“Am I dreaming?” you whisper wetly. “Is this real or just a cruel dream?”
He gently grabbed your chin, tilting your head up so you could look him in the eye, “Dinnae thought the Lord could be that cruel to ye, mo ghràdh,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to yours. He set his lips on your in a gentle kiss, “This isnae a dream, I can promise ye.”
Tears streamed down your cheeks, “Th-then how? I thought you died on Culloden.”
“Dinnae fash about that lass. I will tell ye in good time, but now, I just wish to hold ye.”
That was your only warning before he gripped the back of your thighs, and practically threw you up into the air. You quickly wrapped your legs around his waist, and gently put your hands on his cheeks. Your fingers gently caressing him, he felt real.
But how can he?
“You needa stop thinkin’ so much, lass,” he muttered, his lips grazing yours.
“I can’t help it,” you couldn’t help your eyelids fluttering close just from hearing his voice.
“I know, mo ghràdh.” He dropped onto the bed, your back hitting with a thud. You stared up at him, eyes wide. “Tell me, when was the last time your Thomas took care of you?”
Your eyes fluttered as he pressed kisses on your neck, sucking into your skin.
Oh shit-
“Words, mo ghràdh.”
“I- I-”
“Christ, has it truly been that long since someone’s cared for you, mo ghràdh?”
You whimper, turning away from his eyes.
Yes, Thomas never touched you again after you came back, but you didn’t want him to. You had only ever wanted Jamie.
Fuck-
You cried out when you felt the sudden pressure against your sensitive clit.
“Shh.”
Jamie’s thick thumb rubbed against you, pressing against you. You felt his pointer finger circle your entrance, before gently pushing into you.
Ahh
Your back arched and a small moan ripped from your chest.
Jamie pressed his free hand onto your stomach, pressing you down onto the bed. His fingers pumped in and out of you, the squelching sounds of your wetness flitting up to your ears.
You sobbed; it was too much, but not enough.
Oh god, oh god-
Ah, ah, ah-
The overwhelming pleasure crashed into you, moans ripping from you.
Just as the waves of pleasure seemed to calm, you felt his tongue against you. Lapping at your clit.
You sob, overstimulation rippling through you. Your hand grip onto his red curls, desperately trying to push him away from you.
Too much, too much.
Everything turned white. A sharp ringing sound in your ears.
You could hear yourself moaning, screaming. You felt Jamie’s hand pressing over your mouth to quiet you.
Oh god.
Only after the wave of pleasure resided away did everything come back into focus.
Jamie laid over you, a smirk covering his face, and his curls fanning onto your forehead. One of his hands was covering your mouth, and the other was holding your hand beside your hand in his. Then you realized he was stark naked, his skin sticking onto your sweat covered body. You stared up at him with teary eyes.
You didn’t want to stop, but you were throbbing with overstimulation. You hadn’t had sex in over five years. Everything was so sensitive.
A gentle smile spread across his lips, staring down at you with something that you could describe as adoration. “Do ye think ye have one more in ye?”
All you could was whimper loudly, and nod your head.
Jamie chuckled at you, took his hand from your lips, and pressed a small, gentle kiss. He moved his down, gripping himself in his palm. You both stared at each other, holding your breath as he pushed himself into you.
Your hips jolted, a gasp ripping from you.
“Christ,” he snarled, “ye are much tighter than I remember.”
“W-well,” you started, only to get cut off a harsh thrust of his hips.
His head fell on your forehead, your pants mixing together.
Oh, oh oh oh-
You felt the beginning of your third orgasm of the night thrum through you.
“Ja-jamie,” you stuttered, “please.”
“Shh,” he whispered, “I’ll take care of you for the rest of our lives.”
