Music Surrounds Us!
When searching “nature music” you will find hundreds of hours of videos and music of nature sounds that are often described as calming or relaxing as many people find solace in being in nature or listening to it at the very least!
I find music in nature as the sounds of nature help me to sleep, I especially enjoy thunderstorms as I find the sounds relaxing and reassuring. Music in nature often write themselves as I think of bird’s songs that allow them to find mates, I often think of the musical dancing bird from ‘Our Planet’ which performs for their mate! You can also find music in nature with the hums of bees, flapping of bird’s wings, splashing of ducks in a pond, and swishing of trees in the wind! Putting all of those sounds together may create an incredible piece of art through song!
youtube
Nature in music, I often think of people creating music that is inspired by nature or using music in interpretation to keep viewers interested (166). In the textbook they compare photos and videos. Photos capture one scene and can often communicate better than words (170), videos however contain sound which can make the scene so much more interesting (171) and immersive through technology in regards to interpretation using videos and songs. Nature in music could also tell stories and teach lessons, I personally think of campfire songs. Radio stations can also incorporate nature with music! They could play music to draw in viewers and then talk about nature in the breaks (175) or play music that contains nature lessons. Radios are great for some viewers which information is presented in 1–5-minute periods and a great way to reach different viewers in a format that they enjoy! Nature in music can occur as a tool as music will resonate with the visitor (12), help different people learn with different learning styles (105), and draw people towards an interpretive experience (200).
I think that music can take many forms in relation to nature. Many songs are often nature sounds solely, nature sounds incorporated, or based on /inspired by nature (animals, landscapes, abiotic features)! I found 15 songs related to nature in a pro-environment context in article by Anderson (2020). I’m sure that if you search up your favourite animal + song, you will find a song that at the very least mentions the animal. Perhaps it will teach you something or use the animal’s attributes within the song!
Some songs I think of from the top of my head of nature would be “Butterfly Fly Away” by Miley Cyrus, “Roar” by Katy Perry, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland and covered by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, “Little Rain” by Morgan Wallen, just to name a few! To unpack one, “Butterfly Fly Away” by Miley Cyrus my personal favourite from growing up contains a lesson that as you grow you should spread your wings AND contains a little bit of knowledge of the caterpillar becoming the butterfly! Growing up from under your parents care to going out to make dreams come true!
Are there any influential songs you grew up hearing or think of when prompted with the word “Nature”? What does it teach you!

YELLOW SUBMARINE (1969, Dir: George Dunning)
Tumblr media
Aside from its nonsensical and surreal plot , Yellow submarine has been heralded as a keystone in the history of animation. It broke barriers through the generally expected forms of media, integrating multiple techniques including collage (both photographical, and film inserts throughout) and traditional frame-by-frame animation. The expressive art style amalgamated with the free flowing aesthetics of the psychedelic colour palate and organically flowing lines. For many sequences, the art-style flourished and changed drastically, which can be attributed the large team of distinctive artists (over 200 individuals) who worked on it - A key scene, of course, being the ‘Lucy in the Sky’ sequence, which involved the use of rotoscope.
Rotoscope is a technique in which an animator will trace over each frame of live action footage using a translucent medium (like glass) resulting in realistic movement and shape.
However, unlike a simplistic form of rotoscope, the sequence involves bold painted planes of colour incongruently on each frame, with the colour palate of each frame changing and flipping, thus exciting the visuals and stimulating the subject matter. A short shot of a woman on a horse becomes a vibrant flurry of bursting colour and energy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This particular sequence was the brainchild of George Dunning, the main director of the whole film, of which he then presented to artist Bill Sewell. Sewell developed over half an hour of rotoscope images, which was then condensed into the sequence length of the film.
Rotoscope, however, isn’t a one off in Yellow Submarine. Its first and perhaps more emotionally charged use appears in Eleanor Rigby, only with a more uniform and muted ambience. The visuals are also more static, but will sometimes involve a small element of traditional animation, painted over on a glass panel to be separate from the background. For example, in the depicted image of the man in a helmet, a tear falls from his eye and drops to the bottom of the goggles. Once the tear seeps through the goggle it drops from the bottom. The contrast between the static photos and the single tear brings to mind clear themes of isolation and melancholia- as the tear makes its way through the already rather bleak environment like a signifier of unease and hopelessness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, many clips in the movie involve live action placed furtively within the 2d environment. This adds dimension to the world building – emphasising the psychedelic, conceptual and dreamlike atmosphere of Yellow submarine.

Artist research- Henry Selick
Uploaded 08/11/2019:
Born in New Jersey Henry Selick began drawing by age three and attracted lots of attention with his early efforts. His sketches of heroes, lions and eagles brought so much attention that by the fifth grade, he decided to give up art and avoid the spotlight. In high school, Selick turned his creative energies towards music and became a member of a rock n' roll band. By the age of 20, his interest in art and especially animation featuring experimental films.
Selick at Disney worked as an in-betweener and animator trainee on such films as Pete's Dragon and The Small One. He became a full animator on The Fox and the Hound and worked on the two title characters. The studio then helped him create the alien creature in Disney's The Watcher in the Woods .In 1986, the filmmaker started his own production company, Selick Projects (now Twitching Images). He also worked on commercials for Pillsbury and Ritz Bits.Selick undertook an ambitious film project that led Selick to direct the full-length stop-motion film, The Nightmare Before Christmas . Years later, his skills and direction was called upon to complete James and the Giant Peach (1996) and Monkeybone (2000).
I like the style of each of the animations he helps create, I mostly like the darker character in the animations he makes. The characters he helps create are mostly made from plasticene, with each facial emotion that the character makes there is a different plasticene face for that moment.

Unit 7, Post 1
Emotional contagion is feeling the emotions expressed in other people’s posts. If your friends are all posting that they’re upset for a variety of reasons, then you might become upset, too, which would be reflected in your own posts.

Time-Lapse Research
The photographic technique of taking a sequence of frames at set intervals to record changes that take place slowly over time. When the frames are shown at normal speed the action seems much faster. For example showing the construction of a building or cars traveling along the motorway. I really like this demonstration of time based media, as this shows more and for me is much more interesting. Also it makes you want to keep watching as something different is always happening in a time-lapse. On the other hand my previous ideas to use cinemagraphs or gifs are not as engaging for me, even thought I prefer the look of a cinemagraph.
youtube
This is a time-lapse of Dubai in winter. I just like how there is always something happening and so much to look at. For example in the video you can see all of the traffic on the roads and all of the boats in the docks. It is just busy everywhere
youtube
In this video you can see that time-lapses can be used for many different things, for example, construction videos for business purposes to show how quickly and efficiently they can build a skyscrapers for instance. Or just to show the process of building this masterpiece. Another example is this airport, as this could be used again for business purposes so that air traffic control can keep a record of how many planes have used the airpot in a day. Or just for amusement to the public to see how it looks for multiple planes to leave an airport during rush hour.
This is why I have changed my idea for my final piece to be a time-lapse now rather than a cinemagraph, as I find the amount of things that can go on on one time-lapse fascinating.
