Monster Spotlight: Grimple

Chaotic Neutral Tiny Fey

Bestiary 4, pg. 142 (pic from 2e’s Bestiary 3, pg. 120)

These disgusting, lice-infested, anthropomorphic opossum are one of many species of Gremlin, mischievous and often hateful Fey spawned into the world to cause chaos. Like many gremlins they live in the dregs of society, infesting abandoned buildings, sewer lines, garbage dumps, and the like, venturing into greater civilization to sate their physical hungers and their inborn need to destroy and despoil. They’re not quite to the point of killing people, but Grimple certainly like harming and inconveniencing them, with listed crimes such as abusing pets, freeing livestock, throwing rocks at passers-by, picking pockets (+5 Sleight of Hand), loosening signage so it falls on people (or removing it entirely to cause confusion), and loosing their disease-ridden vomit on every surface at every available opportunity. They have Mage Hand and Open/Close available to them 3/day as well as Prestidigitation at will just to enhance their potential pranks and allow them to perform them from a safe distance, because their DR 2/Cold Iron won’t do much to protect their 4 HP from retribution.

They’re nasty customers which make frequent forays into civilization to feast on garbage and waste, disrupting the peace of the locals between meals, and like the rodents they resemble it’s often up to adventurers to exterminate them as part of low-level missions, because the average peasant likely can’t even FIND the vermin once they’ve decided to hide. They can climb at 20ft a round, have a +13 to Stealth, and most uniquely have the ability to stretch out flaps of skin out from their sides to serve as ersatz wings, letting them clumsily glide in a single direction at 20ft/round. They have all the mobility of a squirrel with the intelligence of a human and the malevolence of a human-squirrel hybrid, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as they flee retribution for their misdeeds and sabotage. It’s good if they’re just running, though, because if they’re actually pausing and throwing rocks at you (which deal 1 point of nonlethal damage, same as their bite), it means they’re trying to bait you into following them.

Whether it’s a patch of Grease on a flight of stairs (which they can cast 3/day), a tripwire placed in front of a pile of horse manure, the gremlin flinging open the door that was hiding some incredibly dangerous and hostile monster, chasing a Grimple is bound to end in pain. It’s a humiliating and often humbling experience for any beginner adventurer who thinks to themselves “it’s just gremlins, it shouldn’t be that hard, even for me!” For a DM, the Grimple make good critters to send players after to teach them the folly of underestimating a creature that’s as intelligent as a human but which has supernatural powers and movement modes a human needs tools to match, without the threat of death lurking around. About the most dangerous thing they can do is, once every 1d4 rounds, spew a disgusting technicolor yawn in a 30ft line, potentially nauseating everyone in the area that fails a DC 11 Fortitude save for 1d4 rounds. Distracting, upsetting, and disorienting, but not dangerous unless there’s other monsters nearby.

That being said, whether you end up cracking your head on the sidewalk from the Grease or if, to your dismay, there’s enough Grimple present to knock your poor ass out with their rocks (and there typically is, since gremlins as a rule are rarely ever alone), you can bet you’re going to wake up A) without your belongings, B) smeared with unspeakable substances and likely with a case of Filth Fever, C) with everything they left you with stained via Prestidigitation or any garbage they have on hand, and D) with an infestation of unpleasant Gremlin Lice. These nasty parasites thankfully can’t survive on non-gremlin hosts for more than 24 hours, but ANY contact with the Grimple--no matter how brief--causes the irritating infestation to spread, inflicting a -1 penalty to concentration and initiative checks as the itch distracts the victim. Thankfully, a bath cleans off not only whatever substances the gremlins may have smeared you with, but their lice as well.

Still, if the adventurer wasn’t motivated to get a cold iron dagger before, they likely will be after that.

Some PJO cabin 4 head canons

because writing headcanons is apparently the only thing I’m good at 😭 

1. The people of the demeter cabin are actually really chaotic, but try to maintain a cottagecore ✨vibe✨ to mess with people.

2. The Demeter cabin just hates winters, apart from the whole hades-persephone thing that went down with their mothers, it’s just a bad time for them and a lot of them sometimes go into depression during this time.       -Chiron tries to make their side of the camp seem warmer and more cozy during this time of the year because he knows how much it affects them, the cabin 4 kids are always grateful to him for that.

3. The Demeter kids almost always look well put together, but if you look closely you can see their messy hair, and fingernails caked with dirt, and dark circles. Most of this is just from working in the forest, and some of it is just evidence of them having fun and taking advantage of their weak demigod scent by leaving camp as much as possible.

4. The summers are always the liveliest there. The Stollscan prank their cabin thrice in a day, but none of them seem to bother. It’s such a sunny, happy time! Why should annoying people ruin it for them?

5. A young girl once came to camp carrying her pet rabbit, and since she was an all-year camper, the entire cabin took it upon themselves to raise it as a joint effort. The girl named her bunny, and none of the other kids could argue with that logic.

6. The Demeter kids are usually always kind, and radiate a warm energy, but mess with them once? Well, you never know, maybe you’ll just wake with poison ivy surrounding your cabin. 

7. There’s a long-standing rivalry between the Hermes and Demeter cabins. It slowed down once both the head councellors of the respective cabins got over their immaturity and started dating, obviously, but never came to a complete hault.  

8. Most of the younger Demeter campers spend most of their days outside in the forest or the fields, sometimes even... forgetting to return. One time, there was a 13-hour long search for a missing 8 year old camper, only to find her asleep in the middle of the forest. 

9. Quite a few Demeter kids have anger issues, which they seem to have got from the maternal side of their family. 

10. They have a secret hideout!! It’s located a little further into the forest, so only the Demeter kids know about it. And it’s just a small tent with some cozy lights, a small bed and some books in case the person is REALLY not feeling well, and a small old-style cable tv.       -All the Demeter kids know the way there, and also know they’re free to go there when they’re feeling down or just want to be alone for a while.      -It is, however, not allowed to leave without notifying ANYBODY else, even the head councellor if you want to, because that will worry a ton of people. Also, you’re probably going there to be alone, so it’s best that people know not to go there.      -Also an unspoken rule, nobody talks about why the person left unless they bring it up.

11. Everyone there is so aesthetically pretty. They have messy hair, and clothes that look like they’ve definitely been worn atleast fifty times, and messy hands, and wide grins. Nobody can not love them 

12. They have an old-timey radio in their cabin, that the Hermes kids stole first but then gave to them. However, they can never settle on one channel, and it’s only used when there are very few people together in the cabin.

Okay, that’s all. This was definitely longer than most of my other posts, wow, but I am really proud of it lol.

Chapter 4

Some pre-chapter notes:

Immediately after this chapter Sayaka does her whole thing. I think the timeline here is a little wonky compared to the canon timeline but shh don't worry about that

I'm really tempted to write some stuff from Makoto's POV because I think it'd be funny as hell. Makoto trying his best to take care of this self-righteous rich boy who keeps on insulting him at every turn and insisting he doesn't need or want help, but also won't leave him alone and is making Makoto do stuff for him. It's like he picked up a stray cat that won't stop demanding to be pampered and also bites him sometimes for petting him. Typical normal guy and tsundere type dynamic. You did this to yourself really.

I love the importance of names and stuff when it comes to how people use them. Byakuya calls Makoto by his first name but I headcanon that he refers to Makoto by his last name in his head. In one part using Makoto's first name without honorifics because why would he use honorifics, but also using his last name in his thoughts because that's how he characterizes people, including himself. Until he respects them enough to use their first name in all cases

Naegi returns eventually, and with a flurry of apologies to explain his delay.

"It's, Sayaka was just feeling a bit scared, so-"

"I don't really care." Byakuya cuts him off bluntly. Whatever they needed to do to comfort each other wasn't his business, and he frankly didn't care to hear about it either. "Just shut up and listen."

He's sitting on the edge of his bed, one ankle resting on the opposite knee with his arms crossed, his back ramrod straight. Naegi shuffles before him, emanating his usual nervous energy.

"Makoto." Naegi twitches, snapping to attention. "What do you know about me."

"Er...what?"

Byakuya feels his eye twitch. "Are you dense? You heard me," He huffs. The impatience that had been building since Naegi left him earlier was working itself up towards a real, genuine anger, and there was a nauseating pulse in his temples. "Tell me what you know about me. Now."

"Um, well..." Naegi clears his throat. "You're Byakuya Togami. And...the Ultimate Affluent Progeny."

"And?"

"And...? And, you've already assumed the role of 'heir' for the Togami family, and started managing some of the businesses...and you have a lot of personal assets, which you achieved by yourself." Naegi hesitates for an instant. "And, um...you're considered really exceptional, even among all the Ultimate students. I mean, I just read this stuff from online, but apparently you're supposed to be one of the smartest people here, and-and a lot of economists and stockbrokers consider you to be defining pillar of the market, though I'm not sure what that means...oh, and-"

"Alright, alright, enough." He waves a hand to shut Naegi up. It was all mindless drivel that Byakuya had heard a million times before, and he covers his face with his palm, feeling a strange combination of irritation by the waste of time and, oddly enough, pleased by the praise. "That's not what I meant."

"Then..."

Did he really need to spell it out? He sighs, exasperated; there was no way to make his point clear unless he says it out loud, it seems, because otherwise the dimwit boy would never understand it. "My eyes, Makoto." He fixes Naegi with a stare, though he can't read any emotion off his face at all. "Don't tell me you haven't noticed anything?"

I know you noticed, he thinks silently, desperately, to himself. There was no way he didn't, no matter how stupid Naegi was, it was his observant nature that first pointed out the irregularity of his eyesight during their first meeting, in front of everyone. And when he directed Byakuya to his dorm room on the first day, and even when he let the young heir hold onto his hood to lead him through the dark hallway. There were too many coincidences. He had to have some kind of inkling, at the least.

"I..." He hears Naegi swallow audibly. "I...did. But I thought, with how you acted, that you didn't want anyone to know?"

Byakuya feels the relief like a weight shedding from his shoulders. His suspicions were right, then. Naegi was as observant as he thought, and even without his eyes, Byakuya had been able to reach the right conclusion. "That's right. But you know, don't you?" He lets his eyes slide shut for a moment. "To try and hide it from you would be pointless at this point. So, tell me how you knew."

"When we first met, I thought there was something wrong with your glasses at first, like the prescription was wrong, because you cleaned them a lot but you were still squinting after you put them on. And, you looked like you couldn't find your room, even though the little pixel icons were pretty clear whose was whose. And when it came to videos, you didn't watch yours, but you only went to grab yours after everyone else." Naegi pauses for a moment. "And...once, while you were in the cafeteria...you were reading a magazine upside-down."

It takes a moment for the words to sink in, but when they do, it's accompanied by mortification. Byakuya covers his face again, feeling his cheeks burning underneath his fingers. Had he really put on such an embarrassing display, without even being aware of it? "...Did anyone else notice?"

"It was just me and Sayaka at the time, and Sayaka was the one that pointed it out first." There's a note of sympathy in his voice. "But, she thought that maybe you were just out of it, because you looked really tired...and neither of us told anyone else! And you stopped when people started coming in for lunch, so I don't think anyone else saw."

That was a small blessing. But here he thought he had been so careful...what a disgrace.

"Alright. Putting that aside, I imagine that what happened earlier tonight must have confirmed your suspicions about my sight, am I correct?" A particularly defined piece of Naegi's hair bounces as he nods. "Let me say this right now. I have no intentions of letting this...detriment, of mine, become common knowledge. And even someone as half-brained as you can understand that there will be consequences if your tongue is loose?"

"Half-brai-? Yeah, no, I wasn't planning on telling anyone." Naegi reaches up, the green jut of his elbow bobbing as he scratches his head. "Is it okay if I ask why you don't want anyone to know, though?"

"...Need I remind you of our circumstances?"

"I meant-! Like..." he waves his hands around, trying to find the words. "Like, I don't know. If, hypothetically, we weren't being coerced into trying to murder each other. Would you still tell the others?"

"Probably not." Byakuya replies immediately. Even without threat of a killing game, to bring himself to admit such weakness to them - peers or not - would be downright foolish for one of his stature, regardless of whether it was one of their group who was responsible for the injury in the first place. "We'd still be trapped in here either way, and it's not like any one of us is the Ultimate Opthamologist."

"But...we could help you?" Byakuya feels a sharp pulse of pain in his head, and he clicks his tongue. Naegi's voice grows more hurried. "M-maybe we can't help you fix the problem, but couldn't we find other ways?"

Byakuya can't help the short, mirthless snort that leaves him, as his headache thrums to life again, and he presses fingers to his temple. "Enough. You're even stupider than I thought." He sighs, voice stiff and slightly strained.

He presses a hand over his eyes, enveloping himself in darkness. The coolness of his palm is slightly clammy, and he latches on to the feeling. How nice it must be, to be able to trust people so blindly. He thinks to himself. It was the one luxury he couldn't afford. 

"I will compensate you appropriately once we leave here for keeping my secret, but in the meantime I have no more use for you. Leave."

He waits, expecting to hear the sound of clumsy, shuffling footsteps, or the shut of the door, making Naegi's exit. Instead, he receives a quiet, disbelieving: "...Wait, what?"

"Did I not make myself clear? Remove yourself this instant." He repeats again, louder, irked by the disobedience. Usually, people cleared out of his way on his order, whether they were servants or not. But still, there was no movement from the other boy. "What, are you deaf? I said-"

"Yeah, I heard you. But I don't get you at all." He sounds upset, somehow. "You don't want to tell anyone. But I already know, and you don't want...you don't want me to help you, or anything?"

Byakuya snorts, a derisive sound. "What could you possibly help me with?" It wasn't like he was helpless. Today had just had too many unpredictable, stressful elements, which led to this...strained and delicate state. It had been a fluke. Nothing more. He says as much with an air of dismissive confidence, trying to feel as sure of that as he sounded.

"But, I think the days after this are just going to get even worse, right? Kyoko mentioned that the mastermind behind all this probably isn't going to stop giving us motives until something happens." At that, Byakuya clicks his tongue. It was annoying, but he - or rather, Kirigiri - were correct. "I...I can help with some little things, at least. Like I did earlier today?"

Like earlier today. He considers it for a moment; for as annoying and pushy as Naegi had been - forcing him out of his room for some food, clumsily prepared, then leading him back - it hadn't been an entirely unpleasant experience. Naegi was not butler material, that was certain, but he was obedient and seemed to know his place.

In any ordinary situation, Byakuya might have flat-out rejected such a suggestion. It was unbecoming and pathetic to accept offers made out of pity, and foolish to take on partnerships where the odds weren’t in his favor. Makoto was able-bodied, decently observant, and hopelessly bound by human connection - Byakuya was blind and cut off from his wealth and power.

But…there was also no real evidence of Makoto’s intent to kill. He was too caring, it seemed; too hung up on helping others, and easy to read. It would be a risky gamble, but Byakuya had taken more dangerous wagers.

It is only because of my eyes...if not for this, I would have no use for him.

"...I'll consider it." Is all he says instead. For the time being, he was still managing fine on his own. "But let me be clear now on some expectations. When we're around others, I expect you to not be so casual with me."

"Okay, got it."

"I expect you not to reveal anything regarding my condition to anyone, not even that girl you're so intent on fraternizing with."

"W-wait, do you mean Sayaka? I'm not-!"

"And don't overstep your bounds. If I don't ask you to do something, don't do it." The only thing worse than an incapable servant was an overly-presumptuous one. "If you're not sure about something, ask me."

"Can we please go back to what you said earlier?" Naegi asks weakly.

"Your infatuation with Sayaka is obvious, even to me." Byakuya replies bluntly. For a moment, he considers alerting Naegi, letting him know of his own suspicions regarding Maizono, before reconsidering. Saying something like that might jeopardize their newly-established agreement, especially if Byakuya didn't have any real proof to back his claims. "It was quite pathetic, listening to you hang onto her every word like some lost puppy."

He watches pink crawl over Naegi's neck. He's sure the other boy must be making some kind of amusingly mortified face, but it's not one he can make out anyways, so he continues: "On my part, there is not much I can do to compensate you while we're in here, but I won't ask you to kill for me, or lie on my behalf, nor will I ask you to die for me. I have no intentions on relying on anyone in regards to this game that we've been made to participate in." It was rather humiliating to admit it out loud, but it was the truth; there wasn't much he could offer while they were trapped in here. "I will also provide monetary reimbursement for your services once we leave here. Is that an amenable condition? Do you have any other requests?"

It takes the other boy a moment to find his words, likely still stunned from the earlier scathing remarks. "So, you won't ask me to carry out killing for you...would that even work, with the rules of the game?"

"Who knows? But I'm not interested in trying it out. You're not a suitable pawn for that sort of thing, and I don't like leaving dirty work to someone incompetent." There were still too many unknown factors; the rules regarding accomplices, and the extent of Naegi's loyalty. It was better to use the other boy only for what he was offering, and nothing more. "I doubt that the mastermind has any motive that can be used to move me to act recklessly, especially with these conditions. But enough about that - what do you want for serving me?"

"Er...nothing?"

That surprises him. Surely Naegi hadn't forgotten who he was talking to? "Excuse me?"

"There's nothing that I really need right now. I guess the biggest thing I want is for all of us to escape this place safely, but...I didn't offer to help with any intentions in mind. I guess please don't sue me when we get out of here?" He chuckles, a bit awkwardly. "I mean, I won't ask you to, like, kill for me either, or anything like that...I don't want to hurt anyone here."

Really. Even in a game designed for murder and betrayal, here he was nursing this innocent belief that they could all get along peacefully. "Fine then. But don't tell me you'd be satisfied with such paltry conditions? You know I can give you anything you want outside of here? Land? Power?" He quirks an eyebrow up at Naegi's hesitation. "There are even medical procedures that exist to add height to your frame, that would usually be out of reach for someone of your stature."

He can't help the smirk that pulls at his lips as Naegi sputters again, indignant and flustered. "Are you making fun of me?" He asks, suspicious, and Byakuya can imagine him, simple features pinched into a look of uncertainty and embarrassment. This was quite fun, this meaningless teasing; it was pointless, certainly, but it was amusing at least.

"Maybe I am. What are you going to do about it?" He rests his chin on his palm, and tilts his head with a languid smile. Naegi fidgets under his gaze, and turns away.

"Um, I don't really...need money, or anything. I'm not doing this for that." Byakuya opens his mouth, about to explain how he was capable of quite literally changing Naegi's meager peasant life, before he was interrupted. "But, you said that you can do anything?"

"Just about anything imaginable."

"Then can I ask you to save my family?"

The question takes him aback a bit, and he blinks. Of course, not everyone was like himself, with such estranged relations, and of course Naegi, with his average background, would have a loving, average family to go with it. He doesn't remember observing Naegi in any particular distress during the showing of the first motive, but then again, he hadn't been paying much attention.

But it wasn't like it was impossible for him. In fact, it'd be far easier for him to hire the private investigators and personnel necessary to carry out the task, than any police force or government. "Fine then. How many people do you need me to save?"

"My parents, and my little sister Komaru." There's a note of relief in his voice. "Komaru should be starting high school this year. My dad's a realtor and my mom works part-time at the hospital-"

"Save it for when we get out of here." He didn't really need to know Naegi's entire life story. Nor did he particularly care. "We'll put this contract to paper when we have a lawyer around, but in the meantime, we'll seal it verbally." He wasn't particularly fond of non-written agreements, but for now he would take what he could get. And he wasn't planning on giving Naegi any reason to disobey him, anyways. "Do you, Makoto Naegi, agree to assist me to the best of your ability and only on my order, and to not disclose any details regarding my current condition to any person, so long as we are within these premises?"

"Yes-? Yes, I do." He says, words fumbling. "Um, I, Makoto Naegi, agree to...to assist you, Byakuya, as best as I can, and without sharing your secret to anyone. As long as we're in these premises."

It was a clumsy paraphrasing of his own words, but an acceptable one. "Fine. Then I, Byakuya Togami, will swear on the Togami name to return your family to you safely, as soon as we-" He pauses. "As soon as I have safely left these premises. And compensate you monetarily for your assistance during this time."

"Wait, you don't need to-?"

"You'd be insulting me to refuse it. Rescuing your family would be a simple thing for me, and you underestimate how much I'm valuing your labor right now." He reaches out and jabs a finger into Naegi's chest. "Right now, you are being asked to be my eyes, more or less. Consider that an honor."

He hears a quiet whoosh, a sharp intake of breath. Maybe the other boy was realizing the weight of what he had offered, and how much Byakuya was relying on him to uphold his side of the agreement. Or maybe he was simply relieved, his family's safety secured.

Whatever the case, Byakuya didn't know, nor did he care to try and interpret it too deeply. He was full, and tired, and ready for bed. "If that's all, then leave. I'm going to sleep."

"Alright. See you tomorrow morning." As he rolls over to lie on his bed, he listens to Naegi’s footsteps padding towards the door behind him, before pausing with the soft creak of the hinges. "Good night, um...sir?

Byakuya snorts, eyes closed. "Just call me as you did before. You're hardly an official servant, so don't get so comfortable." He lifts a hand to wave over his shoulder. "Turn the lights off on the way out."

The quiet flick of the light switch. The faint red behind his eyelids was replaced by black. "Good night, Byakuya."

He listens for the shut of the door. He doesn't say anything back.

Going aaaallllll the way back to Gundam Wing, I did a songfic where I implied a breakup until the final-line reveal that the character had gasp actually died. There may be a couple other angst-based pieces in my catalog, but that I think is the Most(tm).

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most everything I write is a happy ending, when there's any semblance of plot involved. Uh. The Umbrella Boys AU had a wedding; maybe that counts? Either that or the Thessaly breakup fic with all the hurt-comfort pining that finally resolves into requited realization.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Never have, would like to keep it that way.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? The good kind *eyebrow waggle*

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I have…three, that could be counted as crossovers, and one that's a proper fusion. None of them are particularly crazy. Duo and Wufei did Naruto roleplay in the bedroom. Kakashi and Naruto took on Princess Bride's fire swamp. Gojyo and Hakkai acquired Jiipu from Count D and his pet shop with a complete disregard for the fourth wall. Maybe that one, then, though it's more crack than crazy-crossover. Hob wearing the Wavemother's Robe is not enough of anything to count as a crossover.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! I don't recall which ones but I've had requests to translate to Chinese, to Russian, and I think Spanish as well? Possibly French also. My memory is shit. Je suis désolé.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic? Yeah, a friend and I co-wrote a couple back in GW and it was…fun? At the time? It started as me helping her with the smut portion of a thing she was doing and turned into a cowrite with a sequel. Not the sort of thing I'd have written on my own, and definitely not now twenty years later with my current kink preferences

14. What’s your all time favourite ship? …yeah, that's not a thing I can answer. Whichever I'm fixated on is inevitably my favorite at the time but once the fixation fades, I still have so much love for each of them.

15. What’s a fic you’d like to finish but don’t think you ever will? Oh my god there are so many. But there are two-three unfinished drafts for ThorBruce fic that I really—see, my MCU fandom experience soured so fast I did not have my usual three-year run of productive ficwriting and the ideas I was working on probably could have been finished were that not the case. I would still love to finish them but the motivation (let alone the time) is just not there.

16. What are your writing strengths? I take great pride in my smut, and I like to think I'm good at it. Painting pictures with my words? Maybe character voice, in certain cases.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Plot. Stories with plot and progression and chapters and such. Follow-through to finish pieces that don't get done in the initial burst of focus.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic? If I had a need for it at some point, I would want to consult a native speaker to ensure correct translation and I would include the translation in footnotes etc. But it would have to be some really specific reason that the foreign language was needed/integral to some story device to not just indicate via some other means (e.g., '"xyz," he said, in perfect French', use of italics, etc) that a different language is in use.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Gundam Wing. If we don't count the 'DS9 novel idea' that I recall making notes on in my journal back in high school, or any of the Mary Sue DS9 thoughts I would also journal about. None of that was ever 'actual writing' nor did I have anywhere I would have shared it in '96.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Again. How'm I supposed to pick? Ugh. Let's see, fandom by fandom. Gundam Wing…no, nothing there is a favorite. Saiyuki…When the Chips Are Down. Comedy gen-fic based on a tidbit of fandom lore is not something I manage terribly often but I am quite pleased with this one; Jiipu's pov always delights me and I'm proud of all the voice work here also. Naruto…maybe Seized? Sai POV is one of my strengths and I think it came through really well in that one. MCU…Carpe Diem, I'm very pleased with character voices in that one. Sandman…I remain very fond of the Drunken Confessions Fluffbruary 2023 fic and the Car and Cutoffs one might be my favorite smutfic. So far.

So I’ve noticed that there haven’t been so many posts crossing my dash to help our European friends deal with this heat wave. Just in case y’all don’t remember from last year’s flood of advice for folks in the Pacific Northwest, here’s a list.

1. Stay hydrated. Water is good but it may not be enough. Fruits like watermelon, grapes, and oranges can help replace stuff you lose through sweat. Pedialyte, Gatorade, Powerade or other sports drinks or electrolyte drinks are literally life savers. Avoid alcoholic beverages.

2. Don’t forget creatures! Make sure your pets stay hydrated. Fill bowls with water for strays/wildlife. Put them in the shade to help stave off evaporation. Shallow dishes with pebbles work for insects like bees and butterflies. They’ll be suffering, too.

3. Reduce trips to only what is necessary and go very early or very late, if you can. If you must go out during the day, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing and sunscreen. Hats help, too. Stick to the shade as much as possible.

4. Make sure your vehicle, if you have one, has fuel and coolant. You do not want to get stuck.

5. A damp cloth on the back of the neck can help keep you cool, so can a damp shirt. Take cool baths or showers. On really hot days I dunk my head and tie my hair up off my neck.

6. Advice from a southerner (American) without AC. Once the temperature hits 95°F (35°C), a fan is probably just going to blow hot air around. Open your windows at night to try and get cooler air in and block the sun out during the day with blackout curtains, blinds, or even a dark sheet.

7. Heat can dampen your appetite, but you still need to eat. Break out the charcuterie. You can hit all the necessary food groups without heating up your kitchen. You’ll feel better if you refuel.

8. Signs of heat exhaustion are headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, excessive sweating, muscle cramping, elevated breathing/pulse, elevated temp, and extreme thirst. Get out of the sun/heat immediately and cool down. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Heat exhaustion doesn’t mean a trip to the hospital unless it turns into

9. Heatstroke, which has symptoms that include high temperature (40°C), incoherence, throbbing headache, dry, hot skin, nausea and vomiting, rapid pulse/breathing. A person suffering from heatstroke may seem drunk. Immediately call emergency services. Move the affected individual into a cooler place, remove excess clothing and cool them down by any means necessary. Dump water on them. Move them into a tub with cold water. Put ice packs (frozen veg works in a pinch) at their neck, armpits and groin. Whatever you can do will help.

2. when was the last time you cried? honestly not sure, but i feel like it was not terribly long ago. less than a month ago, i think; i can be a crybaby sometimes

3. do you have kids? legally no; biologically also no; but emotionally? the number is fathomless.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot? i don't feel like i'm a terribly sarcastic person, but many other people disagree. just today one of the kids at work asked me why i use sarcasm a lot! i think at this point my habit of "saying ridiculous things with full sincerity and then expecting people to understand that its sheer absurdity means it's a joke (but still actually doing said ridiculous thing if people call it a bluff)" is just hard for people to parse in general, but since i just roll with whatever they think i'm being, it's not a big deal.

5. what sports do you play/have played? this question is so funny bc recently i've been joking that i'm the only non-jock at my workplace, but my coworker in aquatics tried to rope me into lifeguarding for the summer when he found out i could swim, and i did marching band in high school. oh, and i took a fencing course in uni before plague.

6. what's the first thing you notice about people? their jacket, then their hair. if you change both of these things at once i might have trouble recognizing you.

7. eye color? brown. you know how dominant genes are.

6 months ago, it's generally a pattern I do one big cry maybe a whole day or whole afternoon just silently im not really a sobber, unless im forced to talk about it then I guess its more obvious that im crying otherwise a watery esque eye my eyes doesn't get red, You really wouldn't have guess anything, which at times can be sucker since if it was a bit more obvious the ppl around me would ask even if i would have denied it. But that would have still felt nice. But since they usually cant tell and is being completely normal i just feel like i should go along with it, and then the next day its over i do try to cey again but i just cant, i always think i cried it out so theres nothing more and then when 6 months comes in the cycle continues. In saying this I do want to have a child, 2 :D, but I want to be mentally capable, and have enough finance saved to create the village that my child would have, (baby sitters, night nurse, travel nanny, doula care, my afterbirth message therapy, postpartum in home care helping with cleaning or making meals) though I may not use these services I want money there so that if need it it'll be there in case of post partum depressiob, I work in childcare some parents and colleagues i work with do not have any help, or only grandparent help and that can also be taxing on the parents not necessarily financially. So it can be emotional struggle and which could lead to a strain in the emotional and physical relationship between the couples,, which I see can at times turn into into resentment when you think your partner is not doing enough, or not feeling supported. Which can lead to feeling too overwhelmed and not being able to enjoy being a parent ( like I don't understand why some ppl say have usually boomer grandparents say have back to back children and in the next 5 years it'll be easy and calm like what about during it, and also why do I want to struggle or look back and not have too fond memories like that never made sense 2 me

so yea before having a child I know I want money saved to cover all these for atleast the 8 months before even thinking of a having a child, I mean in my culture grandparents will look after and stay with with with mother for atleast 6 months to look after both child and mum but still for safety sake.

1). I LOVE the headcanon that Purl makes weird or animalistic noises so much, and I can totally see May also doing that! May doesn't mind purring for her partners, Purl does and if pushed they will just leave for the night all pouty.

2). You know what? I'm pretty sure NO ONE in Tatiana's family or friend group would have a curling iron. So that literally means that Tatiana either went to a mall, hair salon, or some random person with a hair iron and licked it lol!

Also, I see her as not being hurt, so that isn't the "didn't go well part." What was though was either Joust or Quida thinking it was not hot because of Tatiana's lack of reaction and so one of them licked it, which is when things went down hill and chaos ensues!

3). Honestly, I don't see DJSS as liking country music until they hear West and Purl listening to depressing country music and he fell in love with it. Before all he heard was like the stereotypical "bad" country music that a lot of people seem to hate, so hearing a "good" country song was something else for them.

I also don't know if this counts as "depressing country" music, but I can see them all really liking Poor Man's Poison (which is Folk genre but kinda close to Country, maybe. Let me know if I'm wrong lol). I love that band so much and some of their songs are on the darker side! Purl would love "Stronger than the Whiskey" while DJSS I can see liking maybe "Pressure Cracks" or "Black Sheep" and West would really love "Georgia Law Man" and " Hell's Coming With Me."

No, but he totally would! I can see Kliff having all the major songs, vinyls, CDs, cassettes, and whatever else of all the most popular rock bands of each year/decade. Then he'd have smaller artists that he liked and then just a HUGE digital collection of all kinds of rock music too! This guy lives, laughs, loves rock!

5). I can honestly just see her punching a guy touching her hair. She knows not to bite people unless really in danger or something because she could potentially kill someone with her venom.

That being said, she WOULD bite someone to protect Papa when they were younger. It only happened once, but that kid (and other kids) never bothers Rubato after that incident ever again. It finally put a stop to all the bullying he was going through at the time, since none of the other adults would ever stop it.

And again, thankfully he got better. She doesn't like to tell that story, and Papa knows this, so it never gets told to people around her. Though I'm sure her mom would let it slip one day during a visit with Yinu probably lol.

6). Sofa, Sayu, Haym, and Yua all have weekly cat cafe meetings. Many fans await the many photos of foam cat coffee or cute deserts that the 4 put out after the outing lol.

7). The only one who would be allowed would be Eloni and that's only because he would have helped Zimelu build them lol! Other than that they are never touched and put inside a beautiful display case (I know nothing about Gundam other than it is a mecha anime lol)

8). I honestly don't see Neon making advertisements without 1010 as I see him and 1010 as starting NSR together and not like Neon started as some guard or something and then made 1010. So 1010 would definitely already know all the advertisements Neon would have made.

However! I can see them looking back to the first ever 1010 advertisements and laughing at how bad they were for the time. Neon is obviously embarrassed at how messy and awful they are, but is happy with how much he has improved.

If anything, I can see 1010 doing embarrassing advertisements at first before they finally told Neon "We don't want to do this commercial" or whatever. Now 1010 and Neon make sure they communicate if they want to do a ad, collab, promotion, etc.

While it wasn't as much of a birthday moodkiller as Blackout...yeah, he wasn't having a great time that year.

5. Rolly was definetely frozen during Blackout as seen in this (VERY) old art.

Of course, the Blackout did end...(unless you're unfortunately stranded in the timeline Kaede is in, in which case it did not.) So clearly someone had the moxie to end Herbert's reign of terror...but who? This will get explained further on that characters post... :)

6. Rolly doesn't wear it anymore, but as a teenager and in his young adult years, he had a beak piercing. (Pictured here is his casual PSA!Era outfit!)

7. Rolly lived off island for a good chunk of his childhood on a island called Deception Island, with his negligent father Caspian. Caspian ended up leaving Rolly behind when he was around 8 years old due to not wanting the commitment of a child, which led to his uncle Rocco adopting him. Rocco was only visiting at the time when Caspian left since he lived on Club Penguin, so he ended up bringing Rolly back with him since Caspian very much was a bad parent.

8. Rolly is a Royal/Chinstrap penguin hybrid, the Royal bit comes from his mother (who he doesn't know and doesn't feel interested in finding). He doesn't have much of a crest, but his feathers tend to grow out more than a "pure" chinstrap's would- hence the cowlick (which he trims to make more manageable.)

9. His voiceclaim is Gordon Freeman from HLVRAI. Which you can hear here! But during his PSA days? He sounds more like SATAM/AOSTH Sonic. Which you can also hear here!

10. Rolly is the original "ace", but as more agents qualified for the rank he decided to also go by the "Ace of Spades" to distinguish himself from the others. He also went by "Agent R" until Dot gave him his nickname.

11. Rolly has ADHD (Combined Type). He stims by pacing mainly, although he uses a fidget cube sometimes too. During his PSA days, he'd often chew his hoodies drawstrings as a stim...

12. Rolly originally worked as the Pizza Parlor's janitor before being recruited and a until late 2007. He quit because of how many messes failed Pizzatron runs made. He really, really feels vindicated for doing so after the introduction of stamps (ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING ONE REQUIRES YOU TO MAKE A MESS)... He works as a Dance Club bouncer as his cover job ever since.

13. Rolly isn't a very good cook. Because of that, he started bringing frozen food like lasagna, pizzas from the Pizza Parlor etc to EPF potlucks and hoping nobody says anything.

14. Rolly is gay, nonbinary, and asexual. He's also poly and in a relationship with both JPG and Rookie since 2014.

15. After Blackout, given how he was also frozen and y'know, literally lost an eye he was given time off so he could cope (and this was also granted to basically all agents, even those who didn't feel unfit to work after). Because of this, Gambit was the one to deal with Operation: Hpt Sauce and Operation: Puffle.

16. So, speaking of Operation: Puffle... Herbert actually noticed his least favorite penguin was suspicously absent during his last scheme. And well, as we all know Herbert is miserable. And misery loves company. So he may or may nlt have stolen Silkie from him and put him to work gathering coins to bait him. Rolly saw right through this and didn't give him what he wanted, but he was pretty worried about Silkie while Gambit (and PH) were saving the day without him.

17. Rolly is shorter than the average Chinstrap or Royal Penguin. Here's him next to Kaede for comparison.

18. Rolly liked popcorn for the most part pre-popcorn explosion (asides from kernels getting stuck in his teeth anyway), but after the destruction of the PSA he's hated it ever since. He started watching movies at home, because he can't stand the smell of popcorn- and theatres make plenty of it.

19. Rolly was a huge theatre kid. One of his most (in)famous roles was one of the lead puffles in Puffles (the musical). He doesn't like to talk about it, since his role was basically the equivalent of Rum Tum Tugger going from glamrock to rap. He stopped acting not long after.

20. During the 2012/2013 Super Hero (read: Marvel Takeovers without the Marvel costumes, since tbh nothing about them was marvel specific OUTSIDE of those things), he gained super powers- particularly electricity. He was a super hero called "Rolling Thunder". (Slightly old art, but the outfit itself is unchanged.)

21. Not unlike Rollando, Rolly has a twin brother! His name is Des (short for Desmond) and hes the OGCP equivalent of Destin. (VERY old art below.)

They became aware they were siblings after a chance encounter during a surfing competition. They're not super close, but they're on decent terms. He also has an older half sister who needs a name (her CPI counterpart is called Daytona), although he and Des haven't met her yet...

22. If you’ve read my fic, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Improv, you may know that Rolly was...genuinely unaware he was an agent and thought he was recruited by a talent agency and not a secret agency. It took the Herbert situation for him to realize this was all real, and not just a bunch of really dedicated method actors. This’ll be explored more in depth if his PSA days are actually written out anytime soon...

23. So Rollando and Rolly wouldn’t be able to meet normally* but whenever they do, such as in roleplays...they tend to have beef with each other! To the point where Richter, paragon of normalcy took it upon herself to bestow to to them...the dreaded Get Along Shirt.**

So that kiiinda made them get over their beef (at least around then, because I definitely remember Rolly v Rollando arguments happening later). But for why? Why do they hate each other so much? Well, it’s more of why does Rolly hate Rollando, since the latter (at least how I write him now) only dislikes him because of Rolly’s grudge. Well, that’s because Rollando’s impulsive, reckless and (at times) hot-headed nature REALLY reminds him of how he was as a PSA agent. Which is bad, because Rolly feels like a lot of issues could’ve been solved if he wasn’t a little smug jerk back then, so he ends up disliking Rollando for his personality, even though Rollando isn’t very smug usually. Or a theatre kid, even. Honestly, other than the fact both have impulsivity issues and tend(ed) to be reckless, they’re pretty different people. But hey, I guess the best guy to project your issues on is you to the left amirite?

* I haven’t decided on the how they meet in canon, but it involves Herby Werby fucking up the universe for everyone and everything and dragging a few characters from their home timelines to the OGCPverse and they have to fix it somehow.

** The action was described backstage because all interactions are over a chat room in universe, if you’re confused as to why she didn’t put it on in these messages.

24. Rolly can’t take care of plants...like at all. As you can see from his CPR igloo (RIP CPR :pensive:)  nearly everything in his igloo plantwise is dead excluding the cactus. Whoops.

25. Honestly? Rolly is probably paranoid graphing calculators besides Richter are secretly sapient now. So he uses the calculator on his phone now instead.

I’d like to think that Rolly added that page and got into a “edit war” of sorts with G about because yanno, the “talking demonic calculator” he got from Herbert’s face SUSPICIOUSLY always acts like a plain old graphing calculator whenever he brings it to HQ... Eventually Rolly stopped bringing Richter because obviously they wouldn’t fess up in front of G, and G thought he was just messing around. I mean a talking calculator, Rolland? Really? That face is clearly photoshopped, no wonder G thought it was a joke. 🙄

I very much prefer pre-established over the whole boring, repetitive drag of an introduction stage, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when I feel like I was just tossed into a ' group. ' By this, I mean my muse is lumped in with 4 others of the same muse, and nothing feels . . . personal or unique, ya know? I like to establish things that are special between us. Nicknames and AUs and songs just for them. Something only we can get excited about or vibe over. Folks can ship with as many of the same character as they desire, but I'm sure we can all agree when I say it's BETTER when you're made to feel like you're more than just that muse.

1. when are you usually online? I’m mostly active at nights throughout the week. I have two jobs, one of them from home so once I finish a batch I can do a quick tumblr check up during the evening, but I also got another one at a physical location (I actually came back a few moments ago). I’m also free mostly at weekends, that is when I usually try to catch up with drafts, rps on discord and other stuff (including some gaming). Still, I’m easy to reach on discord at any time. If I’m awake or not at the job that requires my physical presence I can check and get to you as soon as I’m able to.

2. what verses are you involved in outside of this page? I have a bunch of AUs for Shirou, mostly focused on “routes”. He is a visual novel protagonist and his story varies with which partner he gets involved with, right? I got a few of these. I’m also working with @moonlightmagus a fairy Yuuki and knight Shirou which is the most “out there” one. Some of my partners are interested on my older muses so I’m considering “reviving” a few for something simpler. There was also a quick custom grail war with some friends from outside tumblr, it was great fun. Maybe we’ll do it again some other day, or maybe I could organize one and have an open invitation. I also have a few RPs going on with some old friends from before my tumblr days (we have a “campaign” with OCs in a Final Fantasy X setting that has been going on for 15 years on and off). I’m always open for AUs either here on tumblr or discord. There is something cozy about doing a 1x1 with people. 

3. what is your biggest RP pet peeve? I’m usually very chill about rp partners. It is very hard to get under my skin, but I think the worst offender is not communicating. It is ok to don’t know what to reply reply, feel free to contact me any time so we can brainstorm and maybe have an idea or two and either go from there or maybe move it somewhere else! There are always so many possibilities. Or jump to the next scene. If you are having trouble to understand my reply or if I wrote something that didn’t sit well with you, I won’t get upset if you tell me. I’ll actually be grateful to know your boundaries better and keep it in mind for the next time! Same goes for headcanons or anything really. Writing is a collaborative thing and I’m not here to make anyone uncomfortable or to throw curveballs (unless you want a challenge in writing, of course) And if it seems that I have dropped, maybe either tumblr ate it or my brain short-circuited or something. Feel free to message me. 

4. are you drawn to specific types of muses? I think I have a very eclectic assemble of muses for the most part. I got good beans, cynical assholes, cute mascots, ordinary teenage girl, Dracula… I just write what I vibe with and sometimes I have the mood to write something or another. But I do admit that I’m usually attracted to either brood or sass (or both). I admit the latter there is a fine line between sass and asshole and I try my best to don’t cross that line.

5. are there recurring themes in your writing that people might not notice? Hmmm… It depends on the source material. For example, Narukami’s story is about bounds and connecting with people, discovering oneself and moving throughout the fog – that, in this particular case, are falsehoods and illusions in our lives among the mish-mash of information overload, rumors and other circumstances. Shirou and FSN in general is about loneliness, the desire to connect with others, to pretend to be “normal” while dealing with being alone and struggling with the mental traumas. Also the concept of what is inherently “good” or “evil”. Oh, but I also try to incorporate a lot of philosophy from kyudou and Buddhism in general to his way of life in subtle ways. And, of course, how the way he grew up also makes him misread people – and that also leads people to think he isn’t too bright (he is mostly oblivious tho). I’ve always been big on meta analysis and he gives me plenty of opportunity of doing it in a coveted way to enrich my writing. The tl;dr is that it really depends on the muse and it makes me very happy when people mention in private things they notice. 

6. what are your favorite RP trends? I love the incorrect quote meme, and the “x has appeared” is always a recipe for some fun things going on. Having a pinned post with easy access to rules and info in general is always nice too, the pinned post was one of the best things that tumblr ever implemented just saying. And … Uh… I like the backquotes thingie. I think it is neat. (and it also seems to make the tumblr wonky mobile formatting less frequent).

7. what is your process for starting a new story with someone?  The easiest way to start a new story with someone are memes, as they offer easy ice breakers and sometimes interesting scenarios that I wouldn’t be sure that my partner is interested in. As in it would never cross my mind to even ask because it wouldn’t be something in our radar, you know? Another way, of course, is DMing and gushing over our muses. Some of my usual partners can attest to that. I also love unpromted asks, even if sometimes I’m slow as molasses to get to them.

8. how do you feel about duplicates? I usually don’t mind duplicates for my muse. I actually had fun twin verses with other muses! Like how Air ( @venusbeautyshock ) and I had a Hajime and Izuru twins AU for Danganronpa, and how Kay ( @mistermxrgan ) and I had two Bigby Wolf from The Wolf Among Us/Fables just meme-ing around and being two gruff wolves tired with everybody’s shit. It is always so interesting to read the different takes and , of course, meeting with someone with good taste is also a positive! However! I did have a very bad experience not too long ago with someone interacting with me, then ghosting me after making a duplicate and stealing my headcanons. If I have become less prone to share resources for the muses I’m currently RPing as, that’s why.

9. how long have you been involved in roleplaying? On tumblr I started in 2013, but in general since 1997-ish with Vampire the Masquerade, GURPs and the 2nd and 3rd editions of dnd. And then online around 2000-2001.

10. is there a muse or verse you wish you could write in, but haven’t? Right now I’m pretty satisfied. I have a few wishlists for my muses but not anything extremely specific or that I hasn’t been planning or about to start with someone.  Maybe something Star Wars? I think it is the only big thing I hasn’t dipped my toes yet.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Hilariously, just the opposite. There was a tradition on my mom’s side of the family; for five generations the eldest daughters all carried the same middle name—my mom, my grandma, my great-grandmother and so on. My mom thought that that was boring though, so when I was born she broke the tradition. Her and grandma had a fight about it apparently. XD

2. When was the last time you cried?

A few days ago, when my boyfriend was trying to describe stevia and kept calling it “sativa”.

3. Do you have kids?

No, and I don’t intend to. That’s for personal reasons, though; I really love kids. Some days, I swear I get along with them better than adults. XD

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

I feel like I did a lot as a kid? These days not so much. 8|a

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Their name, if they give it. Otherwise, facial features I suppose..

...No really, I was born in Idaho. Even among Americans, you’d be surprised how little people have heard of Idaho. Unless you too barely remember Idaho, in which case I’ll just go back to being a cryptid now.

Reading fanfic, playing D&D, a couple of mobile games here and there.

I used to have cats! I was very allergic to them, but I loved them so. No pets at present, however.
