Been listening to Both Directions at Once heavily again since its release last summer. This a quartet of greats (Jimmy Garrison on double bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano) and Untitled Original 11386 is my favorite track--grateful to live in a world where we get three takes of it.

John Coltrane, Both Directions at Once: New Music Review
Tumblr media
When I heard they’d found a “lost Coltrane album,” I wasn’t expecting much. Maybe something unlistenable from his post-Ascension period, or some extended jams on not much material. But my expectations were far surpassed. Both Directions at Once is from 1963, and features the band that would record A Love Supreme the next year (among other great albums). It features a bunch of original compositions, some of which appeared on later albums, but three of which can only be heard here.
Why didn’t we know this existed!?
The sound of the album represents a middle point between Coltrane’s more staid efforts and the more out-there work of A Love Supreme. The opening track, the catchily-titled “Untitled Original 11383,” is a nice example, with a wonky, dissonant main riff that opens up into soaring, conventionally beautiful solos—indicating that Coltrane was interested enough in dissonance to be writing it, but perhaps hesitant to improvise with it. “Slow Blues” has more of the avant garde in the solos, as Trane pushes his sax into the heights of its tessitura and beyond its range, even if the song itself (another unreleased original) doesn’t do much that the Coltrane Plays the Blues album didn’t do.
My so-far favorite song on the album is “Nature Boy,” a piano-free reworking of an old standard with a really cool droning bass figure that sounds like something out of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew (from seven years later). The bass and drums work perfectly together to create half measures of control and half measures of chaos, let it loose and reign it back, over and over. The least essential track would be “Vilia,” which sounds totally conventional and predictable—though it does make a nice foil to the more experimental “Untitled Original 11386” before it.
The danger with vault finds is that they’ll only be worthwhile as historical documents, not enjoyable albums that you’ll want to come back to. The question is, does it fill a niche that his other albums don’t? I think this one does. It’s got a diversity of sound that engages, and there are at least two worthy originals you won’t hear anywhere else. I know it’s enjoyable, and I think I’ll keep coming back to it.
A: If you’re a fan of this period of Coltrane—and why on earth wouldn’t you be—this is worth a listen or five.

A lost John Coltrane album has not only been discovered but will be released this month.
Titled Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album, the release features seven songs — two of which were previously unreleased — that were recorded by Coltrane in one day in March 1963 at Van Gelder Studios with his classic quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. There are standard and deluxe versions of the album. The former features seven out of the 14 takes done during the recording session, while a deluxe edition includes all of the tracks. Both versions will be available on CD and vinyl formats. The album will be released via Impulse! Records.
Although the master tape has thought to have been lost and likely destroyed in the early 1970s, turns out that Coltrane had gone home with the album recorded onto a reference tape, which ended up in the possession of his first wife, Naima. Impulse! approached her family to release the music from the reference tape, which was still in good condition.
Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album drops on June 29. Check out the tracklist below.
