Timeline: 5.4, minor MSQ spoilers Pairing: Thancred/Urianger

Thancred and Urianger are off on their scouting mission to Garlemald, but Urianger is behaving just a little oddly.

“Do we need to get you new shoes?” Thancred frowned at Urianger as they set up camp for their first night on the road. Ever since they’d left for their scouting mission into Garlean territory, Urianger had been weirdly quiet, and there had been something a little odd about his gait all day. It had taken Thancred the whole day to work out exactly what it was, but now that they were settling down and he could see the little fidgeting movements Urianger was making with his feet, the reason was becoming clear. “And why in the world wouldn’t you have said so before we left?”

Urianger blushed, looking even more uncomfortable for a moment, and then gave Thancred the pleading look that shouldn’t work so well coming from a man a fulm taller than he was, and somehow worked on him every time anyway. “There is no need,” he said. “That is…the age and condition of the boots are not the matter at issue. I assure thee I shall adjust ere we arrive in enemy territory. Already I am having less difficulty than when we set out.”

He had been keeping up better toward the end of the day. Even so… “All right, enlighten me, what can possibly be wrong, then?” Thancred looked down at Urianger’s feet, clad for once in solid closed-toe boots that would cushion his feet for long hikes and insulate him from the frigid climate of Ilsabard. He had to admit, it was a little bit odd to see him in proper shoes for once; even back at the Waking Sands, when the rest of him was covered, he had preferred sandals, a sensible choice given the warm climate.

And then Thancred laughed softly, shaking his head. Of course… “Urianger,” he said, now amused, “how long exactly has it been since you wore anything with a closed toe?”

“Less than a decade, if I must hazard a guess?” Urianger offered, blushing to the tips of his ears. “Beyond that, I have not kept careful count. I am adjusting swiftly, I assure thee, and will not hamper our progress.”

“You are an absolute madman.” Thancred leaned over to kiss him on the cheek briefly. “Not that I'd have it any other way. I won’t say anything else about it unless I actually think we’re going to be in trouble, but do let me know if you aren’t feeling better adjusted to wearing socks before we approach civilization.”

Ok so while I’m on an Urianger + linguistics brain tangent this has been on my mind since I played through and won’t go away. So I’m throwing it out there into the aether as a bravo, bravissimo! to Timothy Watson for one hell of a performance.  So just for background, prosody is the stuff in linguistics that communicates information but isn’t words, like the tone of your voice, pitch, etc. There’s like half a dozen systems for talking about pitch and my ling major was nearly two decades ago so if you’re an actual linguist and can clarify how all of this works please do!  Idk if it was an acting choice or a directing choice but the way they handle prosody for Urianger is just *chef’s kiss.* One of the things that I think is used really effectively is that he often uses falling intonation at the end of sentences (the pitch of his voice drops) regardless of what the sentence is about. He does it for sentences where other characters would raise the pitch of their voice, so it makes him sound odd in a very subtle way. If I remember correctly, even when he asks questions his pitch doesn’t really change much. Watson gives him a full range of emotions with a limited range of expression, and that’s really cool.  But there’s this moment in Endwalker that keeps sticking with me when they’re on Thule and they all wake up and Thancred's disappeared and Urianger panics. When he calls "Thancred??" the pitch of the end goes (for him) WAY up with a less melodic sound than usual. It's a huge break in how he talks and it's a brilliant, subtle way to point out the extreme depth of his feeling. He’s so freaked out he breaks his speech patterns, which are part of his identity. Whether you think of Urianger and Thancred as platonic or romantic it’s a reflection of how bonded they are. And it absolutely broke me.  And then in 6.1 while he still tends toward falling intonation at the end of his sentences, uniquely himself, the previous largely flat intonation in the rest of the sentence gets jauntier, with a greater mix of pitches. He’s so happy and especially after that heartbreaking moment before it’s wonderful to hear him being not only so joyful but comfortable being more expressive about it. Heckin good voice acting!

Surprise. He wasn't chewing on Thancred! Just being a wonderful Emotional Support Elezen.

Found this in my archives and decided to use it.

Considering their damn height differences, I am pleased with how it turned out.

One of my favorite things about these two, and the angle I tend to approach from, is that Urianger is as much emotional support for Thancred as the other way around. Thancred just doesn't really know how to deal with it sometimes. He's never, ever had someone really care about, worry about him, will never believe he deserves it. But Uri sold the benefits package pretty damn well, I'd say.

I think over time Thancred learns to ask for it on his own, maybe even indulge in it a little. I doubt Thancred would really fall apart in public like that, but there's a scarcity of private benches in Sharlayan.

Anyway, that's all I had the brain juice for. I managed to injure myself by sitting the wrong way, and pain just saps your thinking power. Bodies are stupid.
