I typed a thought about the dumb Chainsaw Man petition that’s circulated (ignore said petition, it’s dumb).

Chainsaw Man fans signing a petition demanding the anime be redone following the manga to a slavish degree lead to me chewing on a several adaptation trends within the Japanese animation industry. Not just that yeah, no matter how impressive and self defining an adaptation, a culture of anime fans that’ve been won over by panel by panel adaptations from at least the last decade, will in fact, hate when anything different is presented no matter how impressive. This non-issue is surprisingly layered though, because it’s not a pandering necessarily, but instead directors thinking differently than the original source, and that in of itself being considered blasphemy. Complaints like “why is the composition of this shot different” or “why is this character’s expression not manga accurate” come from the fact that literal tracings are impossible without getting the production destroyed (which yeah, is why subtle differences are made when referencing pages from the manga source material in any adaptation, because they have the rights to use and reference the manga, not trace it, (see the word: adapt)). 

     Dr. Stone’s anime comes to mind for example, which is manga accurate, sure, but (to me, my opinion) creates a stronger identify through additional aspects like music and voice acting making a lot of the animation depending on the scene, feel superfluous (note: Dr. Stone is difficult to adapt for different reasons than CSM, obvious I know but it’s just an example regarding animation). Contrast that with something like Yu Yu Hakusho or Urusei Yatsura (1981), generally agreed to be good adaptations that have their own distinct identities from the manga that, if the current form of any kind of social media were around back then, would get the same treatment from so called “devoted fans” of their favorite entertainment. Different doesn’t mean bad, and I for one welcome more adaptations of manga not being tied too much to their source material because, hello, it’s being adapted to animation. Do I even get into how layouts across the anime industry have become something of a dying art across the board? Or how adapting a manga page by page can be used in order to, please fans sure (if I’m being generous), but also lighten the load of any production? Or how following the manga does not mean it will inherently work in animation to begin with? We’re observing the same kind of “true fan” backlash with the new Trigun. This ain’t new and it doesn’t mean anything. Just typed this to get my thoughts on a page or something I guess.

First Impressions, Winter 2018: Darling in the FranXX

Darling in the FranXX Anime Original Studio: Trigger, A-1 Pictures Themes: Sci-fi, Mecha, dystopian future, giant monster attack, adolescent sexuality. Impression: Complicated. Thoughts best summed up as very cautiously optimistic?

Synopsis: Set in a ravaged future where the remaining human population lives inside large fortress like plantations, yet they are constantly under the threat of attack from colossal and monstrous life forms so their safety is dependant on the robots called Franxx and the child pilots that live to operate them. The protagonist is (you guessed it) is one of these young would-be pilots, although he seems destined for failure until a chance encounter with (bet you didn’t see this one coming) a mysterious girl gives him another chance to prove his worth. Talking points: -Get in the robot Shinji: Tropes vs. original content. -How much sexual allegory is TOO much sexual allegory? -Trigger animation

Review: My opinion is torn between wanting to like the show for being very pretty with some very nice animation, and being put off by the hard emphasis on fan service during the first couple episodes.

Basically we’re looking at a more sexed-up version of Neon Genesis Evangelion in a lot of ways. Humanity is under siege and child pilots with mysterious robots are the only ones that can save them. It’s more apocalyptic than Evangelion, but well within the parameters of the genre. It’d be easy to say “been there, done that” but lets first consider that the creative team is likely 100% conscious of this and decided to go this route anyway, meaning hopefully they have something meaningful to add to this. Studio Trigger, and their predecessors at Gainax have a pretty mixed track record by my reckoning, but I think it errs towards originality in its content, if not always quality, so I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt here. Besides, between the Gundam type Mecha anime and the Evangelion type Mecha anime (it seems to me most mecha anime fall into one of these categories) I personally prefer the Evangelion type mecha, and don’t mind seeing them go down this path. So what is Darling in the FranXX going to contribute to the world of mecha anime? If the first two episodes are any indicator looks like we can expect a lot of transparent sexual allegory, that’s for sure. Starting with the pilots being coupled into male-female pairs (dubbed Stamen and Pistil if you weren’t getting the hint already) we are constantly being presented with the robot as some kind of obtuse sexual metaphor… or at least I hope it’s purposeful metaphor and not just the empty desire to capitalize on sex to drive interest in the plot (realistically it’s probably a little of both). You could make a case in either direction depending on whether you wanted to defend the series or not, the only thing you can’t argue is that it isn’t present. I don’t think you need a particularly dirty mind to see the intent in this peculiar cockpit layout. (seen below)

So we come to a question of intent, as usual. On one hand we have sex and fan service as the cheap tactic to create interest and the other hand, sexual tension as a meaningful character dynamic. Breaking down the second episode in particular we see evidence of both- on the bad side there are plenty of slow pans heavy with male-gaze, and framing devices like the screen caption below that clearly show the series runners don’t have any problem with using plenty of T&A to sell the shows to their male audience.

(subtle, huh?) 

But maybe that isn’t all it’s there for, looking at it more positively there is a rather interesting segment that, if you’re following through with the robot-piloting-as-sexual-metaphor (and of course, I am), seems to be getting into some talk about performance anxiety and sexual dysfunction. That’s something different, at least.

So honestly where does this leave us? I’m at a point where I’m very curious to see where they are going to take this discussion but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t get any deeper than this, although I would be a little disappointed if it turned out it was all just for eye candy. However you feel about fan service at least you can say the art and design for the series is very on point. Character designs have the soft charm and high expressivity I’ve come to expect from Trigger, which along with the level of artistry they put into creature, mechanical, and environmental design makes for some highly appealing couple of episodes.

For final thoughts I’d say at least it’s got style, and it could be much worse. It’s certainly not shy about how it wants to solicit its male viewers but at least it’s not as bad as, for example, Killing Bites, which also airs this season and is basically garbage. That, however, is admittedly a pretty low bar. It’s a shame it’s not trying harder to appeal to a broader audience on a platform other than fan service, but it’s within a tolerable range for me personally, and in some cases I find it kind of bizarre or funny, so that's ok I guess. Also since I'm still watching Urusei Yatsura I get tickled when she calls him her “Darling.” 

Verdict: It is no Little Witch Academia by any means, but it is pretty intriguing. I’ll reserve more critical judgment for later but for now I’m going to continue to watch it at a medium to high priority if only for it’s stellar animation.
