The Pride of June: Trans

The Transgender Flag is the Flag used for any one who doesn’t identify entirely as the sex/gender they were assigned. This includes all gender identities, except for cis people. It is the most controversial term in the entire Queer community. It is also the fourth letter in the LGBTQ+ acronym. The term Transgender is also more of an umbrella term, holding all types of trans people.

Fun History Fact: the Trans Day of Remembrance (or also known as TDoR) occurs every year on November 20th to recognize those who have been killed to Anti-Trans violence and hate crimes. It began when Rita Hester, an African American trans woman, was killed on November 28th, 1998. The people’s response of grief and anger led to a candlelight vigil that was held the following Friday of December 4th. However, a few years before another black transgender woman named Chanelle Pickett had been murdered on November 20th, 1995. The community’s response created a group called “Remembering Chanelle”, created on December 18th, 1995. Later, another Black trans woman named Monique Thomas had also unfortunately been murdered. Her murder, alongside the murders of Chanelle Pickett and Rita Hester, was talked about on a web project called “Remembering the Dead”. This web project was later turned into the Trans Day of Remembrance. Today, many articles talk about those three women every Trans Day of Remembrance, and many vigils and gatherings are held every year. Most of the memorials will also read off every death that occurred to trans people from the previous year on October 1st to the current year on September 30th.

SPECIAL NOTE Todays art piece is a little different from the others. This one had more time and effort put into it and features a different view. I’ve had this idea in my head since last June, and was also inspired by @prideknights. It was thought of when last June I was looking at some playing cards and noticing how each one was mirrored. I thought this was a create way of showing the ‘flip side’ of transitioning and people who are transgender. The two people in the art piece are the same person, but it shows how someone transitions from male to female and when flipped, female to male. These people are also shown as knights. Due to the recent rise of hate crimes and anti-trans bills, transgender people right now are at a major threat for their lives. Those who live in Red states or Anti-Trans countries especially are being faced with being unable to have gender affirming care or being charged with felonies. Some laws that are being made even make it so children can be taken away from their families. This means that those who are trans are at a major disadvantage and are perhaps the most vulnerable of the Queer community. These people are shown in armor and as knights to symbolize the strength they carry with them every day and the constant fight they are battling with Anti-Trans people. Every day dozens of transgender people die around the world and those who are fighting are putting their lives on the line. If you can, please show support to non-profit organizations to help transgender people, such as The Trevor Project and the National Center for Transgender Equality. This Trans Day of Remembrance, do what you can to memorialize those who have been killed to transphobia.

Suddenly, the listener finds oneself in the toy factory, and the toys enliven. The first to come alive are Harry Connick Jr. – as an action figure a la Minecraft User – and his “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Destiny’s Child, TI, and Lil’ Wayne dolls rap about the “Soldier.” Bob Rivers Comedy Corp – depicted as dolls – fight over the “Pokemon” plushes, which likewise come to life.

Aqua and the “Barbie Girl” enliven, and Ken asks her to swing-dance to Duke Ellington Orchestra figurines playing “Satin Doll.” The Bowser plush sings about “Peaches” on a toy electronic keyboard before “The Super Mario Bros.” ones rap.

Section 12: Naughty-Listed

The listener then travels to young Stan Freberg’s house, in which he laments to a robber, “I’m Getting Nuttin’ for Christmas.” It turns out the burglar is Sam Harris, who bursts into a showstopping cover of “Satan’s Li’l Lamb.” His younger brother – one of the Kidsongs Kids – awakens. He tells the pair what he wants to tell Santa: “Santa, Please Don’t Forget Me.”

Section 13: Child of Mary

For many Catholics, Christmas is second to Easter as the biggest keystone liturgical celebration. And what better way to commence the segment with Celine Dion’s cover of Schubert’s setting of the Ave Maria? Jose Mari Chan contributes with his cover of “Mary’s Boy Child.” Tara Chugh and Now & Then head to the manger with the viewer, singing Scott Soper’s lovely medley of “What Child is This?” and “Child of the Poor.” Mariah Carey admires the creche in front of them, lauding, “O Holy Night.”

Section 14: Una Epifanía Mexicana

The listener walks down a rural road in Mexico, with St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir singing “We Three Kings of Orient Are” behind them. One arrives with three actors portraying the Magi, with Jose Feliciano wishing them “Feliz Navidad” at the town gates.

Mariachi Juvenil welcome “Melichor, Gaspar, y Baltasar” – and the listener – to the square, where the townsfolk hang a 7-pointed star pinata for their Dia de los Reyes fiesta. They all sing, “Dale, Dale, Dale!” Apiece blindfolded and with each taking turns, some of the youths and the listener attempt to hit the pinata as Dana Hanchard, Derek Lee Ragin, and Joel Cohen’s Boston Camerata sing Juan Araujo's Los coflades de la estleya. The listener finally breaks it open with a torrent of candies piling on the tiled grounds.

#nfcdab 2024 Gol - poster drop show

The Near-Field Communication Digital Art Biennale aka #nfcdab 2024 edition, coming from Berlin travelled in July to the world metropol Gol (NO). We have finally arrived in Gol, in the frame of Gol-dagan (The Gol Days Festival), July 19 - 21.

Having used the park in the 2018 I was searching for another venue. In the end I chose to just drop the posters on the local skatepark. The result wasn't too bad I thought  😅 - given our preference for ground/street, and for people looking on their phones in the downward direction. I also like that it looks like an accident! An option for similar drops (in the future perhaps) could be to fasten the posters to the ground, with tape/glue/stones for the show to last longer insteading of letting the wind spread the works. Or print out more copies and spread them like big flyers in the streets.

“Letter From Birmingham Jail” Essay

In the letter Dr. King also depicts the censorship of the unjust laws, the privilege of peaceful assembly and peaceful protest, which is the First Amendment of the United States Constitution (Letter from Birmingham Jail, Dr. King). Dr. King also states that he was arrested that Friday for parading without a permit to prevent segregation. That of which is an example of an unjust law due to the fact there is an ordinance in place which requires a permit for a parade but when that ordinance is used to deny citizens the right to protest openly and freely against segregation, is considered unjust. The relevancy that this constitutes is also in retrospect to the violent protest that took place at the US Capitol January 6, 2021. In contrast to the events that had taken place in the official “Letter from Birmingham Jail” which was orchestrated to allow individuals to disobey unjust laws and take direct action to bring social change. The attacks on the US Capital involved violent actions which included breaching security barriers, vandalizing property, physically assaulting law enforcement officers and disrupting a joint session in congress. All of which ultimately distinguishes the difference between peaceful demonstrations, which involve nonviolent expressions of dissent or demands for equality and change.

All of these statements conclude that arguably there are many different opinions and assumptions in terms of whether or not race was involved, or this incident was considered a hate crime.

uno. sin patria, historia, ni nombre. el autodescubrimiento siempre es complicado para las personas, aunque al nacer un poco nos dibujan sobre un lienzo en blanco una hoja de vida, una ruta borrosa, aspiraciones impropias, un avatar de lo que habrá de ser el nuevo humano en su recién estrenada vida, un prototipo o avatar que ha de buscar cumplir cada requisito que el tiempo y la imaginación van señalando, para finalmente otorgar honor al buen nombre, a las buenas costumbres…a una buena vida. marina no tuvo nada de eso, a ella la tuvieron y la desecharon, dejaron su hoja de vida en blanco hasta que alguien más, de mejor corazón, viniera a llenarla…o eso esperaba.

dos. uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco hogares de acogida. uno, dos, y tres orfanatos. un reformatorio. eso que sucede en las películas acerca de la preferencia de los adultos por adoptar bebés es cierto, pero marina pareció haber nacido con una pequeña nube negra sobre ella. sus primero seis años transcurridos entre distintos hogares de acogida, algunos mejores que otros, los próximos tres en orfanatos de los que siempre salía por presunción de mala conducta, injusticia o carácter difícil, hasta que harta de los malos tratos decidió hacer justicia por su propia mano…o puños, y  su historial la envió directo a la correccional. de lo vivido allí, se ha encargado de bloquear los malos recuerdos, y eso es más o menos, gran parte del par de años que transcurrió uniformada, hasta que cumplió su condena y ocupó un lugar en las calles hasta que su ángel de la guarda la encontró.

tres. ella era sapo de otro pozo, le gustaba leer, estudiar, de vez en cuando sus puños compartían con los libros, y parecía no querer o apreciar nada más que aquello que la hiciera aspirar a algo más que aquella vida que llevaba. pidió cada noche que alguien notara que era más que una melena oscura y grandes ojos verdes siempre entristecidos, hasta que un día, dio resultado. cuando la nueva trabajadora social del lugar la vio, realmente la observó, no solo pasó la vista o leyó su expediente como tantos más pudo notar que poe tenía potencial, desconfianza, y resistencia a permitirse buenas experiencias para desbordar en su interior, ¿y cómo no si su nombre era un número en un folio?, ‘marina’ fue solo el nombre que los chicos del último orfanato en el que vivió le otorgaron, y con el que pidió ser bautizada cuando por fin la llevaron a firmar sus papeles de identidad.

cuatro. la injusticia social, la violencia callejera, la lucha por la supervivencia, y la importancia del dinero para construir una vida medianamente decente, son cosas que entendió a la fuerza, y que recordaría aún en su nuevo hogar. aquella no había sido una adopción total, solamente la firma del acta que permitiría a aquella mujer llevarla a vivir a su hogar, un nuevo lugar de acogida que compartiría con cuatro niños más, pero que jamás dejaría de ser cálido.

cinco. la necesidad de conseguir más dinero para ayudar a la mujer que terminaría ganándose el lugar de madre en su corazón, se dificultaba con la necesidad de mantener un nivel aceptable en sus estudios, ya de por sí atrasados por todo el tiempo perdido, y además la necesidad de querer costear sus propias cosas, fue lo que la llevó a aceptar la propuesta de un nuevo conocido. tenía diecisiete años cuando se adentró en el mundo digital, al comienzo fue tan inocente como el negocio lo permitía: fotos con poca ropa, chats con desconocidos, videos de bailes, pero el dinero seduce y las necesidades se multiplican, y su ‘carrera virtual’ como cam girl comenzó a tomar forma y a generarle mayores ganancias cuando la ‘inocencia’ fue puesta de lado y el contenido que ofrecía se hizo más explícito, sin embargo, siempre interpuso el sentido común en todo aquello manteniendo su identidad en secreto como regla de oro en aquel negocio, mediante acuerdos de confidencialidad, y pocas imágenes en las que se apreciara su rostro. mantuvo aquel secreto con tanto éxito que sería solo un reflejo más de lo inteligente que era.

seis. aún así, tenía mucho más qué ofrecer al mundo, y ella lo sabía. por eso, cuándo consiguió la plaza en Cornell, sepultó todo rastro de aquel trabajo y decidió mezclarse, “convertirse en uno de ellos” aunque para marina ir con la corriente, siempre había sido algo difícil, ser normal, ‘una más’ sería suficiente. es lo que prometería a su madre cuando hizo las maletas y partió al campus, ahora tenía una vida y la sabría aprovechar.

tessa nació en el seno de una familia de tradición política y militar. su padre fue un sargento primero de las fuerzas militares estadounidenses, y su madre senadora representante del estado de washington. pocos podían creer en aquella época la pareja tan sólida y poderosa que ambos conformaban. tres hijos fueron la cereza del pastel, tessa siendo la segunda, y la que más dolores de cabeza les daría.

no se identificaba con ninguna de las ideas que formaban aquel hogar. odiaba la disciplina militar, y tenía demasiadas opiniones como para respetar los ideales que representaba su madre. incluso siendo una niña, con dos coletas y calcomanías de colores en la cara, tessa lograba mantener un debate sólido sobre cualquier situación, aunque en aquel momento se redujeran a porqué era asqueroso que el cereal se aguará luego de estar mucho tiempo sumergido en leche. sus padres sabían que esa personalidad le traería problemas en el futuro, por eso la criaron para ser fuerte, para que pudiera valerse por sí misma y defenderse si le resultaba necesario. la amaban, pero también sabían que era mejor mantenerla callada y satisfecha.

Lo haría, sus notas le ganaron el ingreso a la universidad de Columbia, hasta que su vida dio un giro de 180° cuando su padre fue asesinado, y todo comenzó a derrumbarse de a poco. Su madre necesitó recurrir a asistencia psiquiatrica, su hermano mayor decidió alejarse de todos, y tuvo que ocuparse de su hermano menor en lo que mamá mejoraba.

retirándose de su carrera como senadora, los vancamp dejaron washington cuando tessa tenía dieciséis años, y lograron asentarse en una zona cómoda de nueva york, en dónde luego de sucumbir ante las presiones de hacerse cargo de su hogar, y su relación con su madre comenzara a deteriorarse, decidiera buscar un lugar para mudarse a brooklyn, retomaría su carrera universitaria, y pasaría al menos un par de meses perdida en lo que el mundo de la juventud neoyorquina le ofrecía para relajarse. nunca fue difícil para ella conocer personas y hacer amigos, así que la vida no parecía tan mala, al menos no cuando no pensaba en su padre, o debía ir a cuidar a su hermano de las conductas destructivas de su madre.

como fuese, no mucho de ella se perdió en aquella nueva época. su personalidad no cambió y retomó el rumbo más rápido de lo esperado aún cuando su naciente relación con nano la hacía tambalear. se acostumbró rápido al ritmo de la gran ciudad, y de una forma u otra, cree que vive la vida que siempre deseo, ahora con un par de bajas indeseadas. es fuerte, y cada día que pasa honra la memoria de su padre aunque, en las altas esferas,no haya logrado deshacerse de lo que significa su apellido.

Why We’re Better Off With Fewer Friends

We can connect to people all over the world, but how many friends do we really need?

Something remarkable has happened since the onset of social media. For the first time in history we have gained the powers to build relationships with people all over the world, and to maintain those relationships with hardly any contact. We never need to lose touch with anyone, ever again, as our Facebook friends and Twitter followers grow by the day. There is something wonderful about reconnecting with an old school friend with a poke and a message; so much easier than having to actually talk to them (what would I say after all these years?). Who hasn’t felt the thrill as your number of friends crosses the 1,000 or 10,000 barrier?

 This must be a good thing. Surely more friends equals more happiness?   

Not true. The growth in the number of our friends has actually been accompanied with an increase in social isolation, as Sherry Turkle describes. We are more connected, yet more alone. It turns out that there is a correlation between Facebook use and loneliness. The very highest users of Facebook tend to feel less satisfied with life and are less happy. One study found that Facebook usage worsens mood, whereas using the internet for the same period of time did not. I must emphasize that the research on Facebook and other forms of social media is not universally negative; it can usefully serve as a way to reinforce real-world relationships. In addition, it appears that it is not Facebook that makes you lonely, but that lonely people use Facebook more. However, what is striking is that the research into our connection to more people than ever before is not universally positive—it’s not even close. This stands in stark contrast to the general research on the critical value of relationships on all aspects of well-being.

 OK, so more friends on Facebook doesn’t appear to be a great thing; what about more friends in the real world? Should we try and gain more face-to-face friends? 

In a fascinating piece of research carried out around the world, Tim Kasser looked at people’s values, and their effects on well-being. He studied how what we strive for in relationships affects our health and happiness. He found two distinct relationship-related values: popularity (the drive to have more friends and be liked by a wider circle of people) and affinity (the drive to deepen and build close relationships). Those for whom popularity was more important, were less happy, less healthy, more depressed, and used more drugs. Those who strived for affinity were the complete opposite. We wrongly assume more is better for most things in life. It just isn’t the case with relationships.                

Fewer Real Friends

Unfortunately, in the US and elsewhere it seems we’re going down the popularity route, instead of building close relationships. In 1985, a survey asked people about how many friends they had discussed important matters with. The most common answer was three, with 59% of people having three or more confidants. In 2004, the most common answer to this question was zero. Yet close friends and confidents are hugely valuable. One study suggested the benefit, from a health and happiness perspective, of having a good friend who you see every day is equivalent to an extra $100,000 on your income!  

 I like to link Kasser’s work with the brilliant research into primates by Robin Dunbar where he estimated the maximum size of social groupings in apes as well as humans, based on the size of their brain. It turns out the maximum number of relationships humans can manage is 150. This has become known as Dunbar’s number. What is less widely known is that his research showed other numbers too. For example, he found people tend to have five people closest to them, then the next level of closeness involves 15 people, then 50, then 150. Nearly all the well-being benefits from relationships don’t come from the 500 Facebook friends, or even the 150 or the 50. They come from the 15. Quality time spent with your 15 closest friends and family will have a direct impact on your happiness, health and longevity (and theirs too). As Ed Diener and Martin Seligman found from an analysis of very happy people, the thing that united them was strong ties to close friends and family and a commitment to spending real face time with them.                

It’s a Question of Priorities

 Now, I am not suggesting social media is a bad thing, nor am I encouraging you to stop being popular. It’s just that we need to be clear on what matters most. There is definitely joy to be gained from throwing a great party with loads of people and following the lives of our otherwise long-lost friends. It’s just that, from a well-being perspective, these should be thought of as what social psychologists Wendi Gardner and Cindy Pickett call social snacks, not proper nourishment. More than that, in the battle of priorities in our over-burdened lives, we need to be careful that managing more “friends,” does not come at the expense of our few real relationships. It’s crucial we make sure the bubble-gum transactions with the many, and the ego-enhancement of growing an ever bigger network, don’t entice us away from the really important stuff; growing the depth of our closest relationships. We need to guard against the ready distraction of the hundreds, stealing our attention from the private moments with those who share our journey.

 If we neglect our few, in favor of the many, we will fail to thrive.

But Izzy, she didn't have a bad bone in her body, to think she could of lured Arthur out of camp with the intention of shooting him, was ridiculous. He’d noticed the two of them around camp. Arthur was truly sorry for what he had done, and Izzy had accepted that it wasn't the real him. Why on earth did Dutch think any different.

In some ways, tracking at night, was easier than tracking during the day. There was less likely hood of the tracks being trampled by other road users or animals. After a few hours, Charles saw the station at Emerald ranch, it was just past midnight. The tracks kept on going, so he followed them.

It wasn’t long before he saw a tent in the distance, and the slight glow on the ground from a fire that had all but died.

Charles, jumped of his horse, and drew his sawn off shotgun. There was a very faint chance, that Dutch was right, so he wanted to be prepared.

Arthur woke. He was a relatively light sleeper. Even more so when he was away from camp. He was sure he heard something outside. It might just be a wild animal, but he wasn't prepared to risk it, or risk Izzy.

He sat up and drew his gun.

As silent as he was, Arthur’s movement in the tent, disturbed Izzy. She sat up and looked across at Arthur. Before she had a chance to say anything Arthur clamped his hand over her mouth. Her eyes went wide with panic and fear. Had he relapsed, was he going to kill her.

She calmed slightly, when he put his other finger to his lips, and mouthed, “there’s someone outside.”

Arthur slowly removed his hand, and gestured for Izzy to stay where she was.

He slowly crept towards the tent exit. It was then he saw a silhouette of an armed man in the gloom.

Arthur cocked the hammer on his gun, and pointed it at the man.

“If ya don’t wanna meet your maker, I suggest you drop your gun!” He growled.

“It’s me Arthur!” Charles exclaimed.

Arthur relaxed and uncocked his gun, “what the hell are you playing at Charles, I could have killed ya!”

Izzy, peered out the tent.

Arthur rolled his eyes, “its ok Izzy, its just Charles!”

Izzy clambered out of the tent, and grabbing the lantern that was inside, she lit it, and held it up.

Charles sighed, “Dutch sent me!”

Arthur shook his head and looked at Izzy, “ya see, I told you he’d be worried!”

Charles frowned, and tilted his head on one side.

“I’m sorry, but he wasn’t worried about Izzy, he was worried about you, Arthur!”

Arthur frowned, “me! What the hell is he worried about me for?”

“I think he was expecting you both back by sundown, when you didn't show he checked in his tent, looked in Izzy’s trunk. When he saw her gun was gone, he thought she intended to kill you.”

Tears started to pool in Izzy’s eyes, as her face crumpled.

“See!” She sobbed, “I told you, he doesn't love me, this just proves it. He doesn't even trust me!”

She buried her face in her hands.

Arthur holstered his gun and went over to Izzy, he wrapped his arms around her. She didn't flinch or pull away, she just buried her face in Arthur’s chest.

“I’m sure it ain’t like that Izzy, I’m sure he loves ya,”

“How can you say that Arthur, he chose you over me in Valentine, now he thinks you need protecting more than me!” Izzy sobbed.

Charles stared at Arthur and Izzy, “if its any consolation, Hosea thought he was over reacting, so did I!”

Arthur sighed, gently rubbing Izzy's back in an attempt to comfort her.

“I think we should pack up camp, and go back.”

Izzy pushed Arthur away, “I’m not going back! How can I, he doesn't love me! All this time, he’s just been using me. He’s worse than you were before! Even then you didn't pretend you wanted me for anything else, other than to hunt treasure for you!”

Arthur shook his head, and gently touched Izzy’s cheek.

“You can’t stay out here on your own, Izzy. You wouldn’t last five minutes, you can’t even protect yourself with a gun!”

Izzy wiped her tears away, and gently touched Arthur's arm.

“I don’t care Arthur, I’m not going back. I’m never going back. I never want to see him again. I still have my stash, I’ll collect that then I’ll go somewhere else, make a new life.”

Arthur turned to Charles, “listen, go back tell Dutch that I’m fine.” he hesitated, “you better tell him, she ain't coming back!”

Charles sighed, “he’s not gonna be too happy!”

Arthur rolled his eyes, “He’s brought this on himself. I’m gonna stay with Izzy till she gets her stuff, make sure she’s safe, then I’ll be back.”

Charles frowned, “When? What about all her clothes, and her maps!”

Izzy glared at Charles, “Stop it! Stop talking about me like I’m not here, he can keep them. I’ll be gone in a couple of days anyway. I’ll buy new clothes.”

Arthur put his hand on Izzy’s back, “go and get some rest, I just need to speak with Charles, we’ll head out in the morning. Then you can decide what you want to do.”

Izzy nodded, and headed back towards the tent. She looked over her shoulder, before going in.

“Thank you, Arthur,” she whispered.

Arthur put his hand on Charles shoulder, and they walked a little way from the tent.

“What was he thinking!” Arthur hissed.

Charles shrugged, “I don't know!”

He looked back at the tent, “what will she do, where are you going to take her, Arthur?”

Arthur shook his head. “she has some treasure stashed somewhere. I’ll take her to collect it, then take her to a hotel somewhere,” he hesitated, “not Valentine, obviously. Then she can decide where she wants to go. From what I can gather, the stash she has will give her enough to leave here, make a new start somewhere else, leave this nightmare behind her.”

Charles nodded, “I’ll let Dutch know...do you think he loved her?”

Arthur shrugged, “I thought he did, but I’m beginning to wonder!”

Izzy sat on her bedroll inside the tent. All this time. She thought he really cared for her, like she cared for him, but it was all just an act. She was just so stupid. Stupid to believe that he was anything other than a greedy outlaw, just out for himself. All those people that followed him. They fell for his lies. Well not her, she wasn't gonna fall for his act again. Her only regret was that she wouldn’t be able to finish her fathers work. Decipher all the maps. Having said that, this was only one place. There were plenty of other places in the world, where there must be treasure. Other maps and clues. She would just start again, somewhere else.

Izzy lay down facing the tent canvas. Planning everything in her head was ok, but in reality she felt lost and alone.

She didn't look round when Arthur finally returned to the tent. She didn't need to, for him to know she was still awake.

“You gonna be alright?” he whispered, as he sat down on his bedroll.

She rolled over, biting her lip to try and stop herself from bursting into tears.

“I...I don't know,” she answered, her voice breaking.

Arthur sighed, “come here.”

Izzy sat up, and shuffled closer to Arthur.

Arthur wrapped his arms around her, and she buried her head in his chest.

“This wasn’t how I was expecting my life to turn out,” she sniffled.

Arthur rubbed Izzy's back.

“Life has a habit of doing that,” he whispered.

Izzy looked up, and gazed at Arthur.

“What am I gonna do now, Arthur?”

Arthur brushed a stray hair behind Izzy’s ear.

“I don’t know, Izzy. But I do know your strong, you survived a wolf bite, a hanging, a bullet wound, even me! You’ll get through it.” He soothed.

Izzy sighed, and rested her head on his chest.

“I had help though, now I’m all alone.”

Arthur kissed the top of Izzy’s head. “No you ain’t. You got me, I’ll make sure you get through this, now lay down and get some rest.”

Arthur lay down on his bedroll, his arms still wrapped around Izzy. She lay down next to him, the warmth of his body comforting her.

“These things have a way of workin’ themselves out,” he whispered, before closing his eyes.

Izzy lay there, her eyes closed, listening to the beat of Arthur's heart.

How could this be happening. One minute this man was terrorising her, now he was comforting her. She was more than confused. A voice echoed in her mind. Something her father had once told her.

“If you’re lucky Izzy, you’ll find someone who’ll support you with this treasure hunting life. If you’re not, then you’ll either have to go it alone, or make a compromise. But remember this Isabella Pickett, you are a bright and intelligent young woman. When one door closes another one will open, you’ll figure it out!”

i. familia de tradición política, popularidad ganada a base de un par de prácticas desleales pero servibles, red de contactos extensa, y conservadora de su ideal republicano. los martí, líderes en cualquier situación de poder que se les otorgue, llamativos, “amigables”…controversiales. el padre, un congresista republicano por el estado de Nueva York, cuya popularidad (positiva y negativa) escaló en la opinión pública por su apoyo y participación activa en el lobby a favor del uso de armas como herramientas de protección personal. la madre, una latina, embajadora de UNICEF y accionista de una de las fundaciones de ayuda social más grandes del mundo. el hermano mayor, líder de sigma nu en su época universitaria, vieja gloria y reputación que se perpetuaron cuando su padre lo convirtió en su mano derecha, y eva, hija trofeo que sigue fielmente con los mandamientos impuestos de la familia y que, casi sin saberlo, en la pieza clave para la aceptación política parental, en el reflejo de lo que la sociedad debería ser.

iii. rasgos de líder innata afloraron desde temprana edad. cuando resultaba electa como figura principal en los musicales, presidenta de la clase o capitana de porristas. aires típicos de quién mira y aprende de la figura política más importante del mundo, o al menos del suyo. la diplomacia fue absorbida por sus células. siempre con un andar cautivante y una elegancia otorgada por la delicadeza y las formas del baile, resultó una voz incómoda para estudiantes y profesores que torcieran sus formas y acciones afectando al resto, se defendía. oratoria impecable y lengua mordaz que terminaba ganando cualquier discusión a su favor.  no fue extraño para nadie que terminara cursando una carrera en estudios políticos en la universidad en que había estudiado toda la famila, excepto su madre.

iv. sudadera conmemorativa o no, pertenecer a cornell y ser parte de las alpha delta niu ha sido una aspiración durante todo su crecimiento. como si fuese una tradición que ha estado destinada a continuar, un peso sobre sus hombros, un deseo impuesto que con el tiempo se disfrazó de propio y se instaló en su pecho. no es una mala chica, no es despreciable o fácilmente detestable, pero le gusta el poder, sabe que es valiosa y quiere seguir mostrándolo al mundo.
