Thinking about marriage/women's rights on Vulcan Some may think that T'Pring not being allowed to divorce Spock was because he was going through the pon farr but if she were allowed to divorce him at all she probably would have done that a long time ago, confirmed by T'Pol when she's speaking with Koss, who isn't suffering from the pon farr. She says that he can choose another mate (without invoking a fight it seems: note the difference between a 'mate' and a 'challenger') and after he makes it clear that nothing she says will change his mind about marrying her, she finally threatens to declare a kal-if-fee. It's clear that Vulcan women cannot divorce/refuse to marry a man they've been betrothed to under any circumstances if A) He himself doesn't consent to ending their marriage or B) She doesn't have someone else waiting in the wings to be given to in his stead. Though, if the challenger she selects fails to win the fight, she'll have to marry her betrothed anyway unless (again) he decides he doesn't want her after the challenge. That seems like an incredibly unfair system, heavily biased towards men. SNW is an alternate universe in many obvious respects but most egregiously in that T'Pring has a lot of non-canonical agency over her relationship with Spock. It's interesting to me that Vulcan society has women in many positions of power and treats women as equal to men from what I've seen despite these laws. We don't really see Vulcans exhibiting a misogynistic attitude towards women in general but in TOS (perhaps because of its general writing style but it's still interesting to note) both Sarek and Spock take on patriarchal attitudes specifically regarding wives. Amanda says that 'of course' Sarek commands her because "he is a Vulcan and I am his wife." It's worthwhile in my eyes to note that she specifies 'wife' instead of attributing this attitude to women as a whole. Again, with TOS' writing style it wouldn't be out of place for her to say "he is a man and I am a woman." Spock, while in a pon farr induced irritation, states that it's "undignified for a woman to play servant to a man that isn't hers" - again implying that there's something specific about being a Wife in Vulcan society which is different from being a woman in general and demands subservience to a husband. This could perhaps stem from the extreme sense of ownership that Vulcan law has permitted men to have over women. A woman legally cannot point blank refuse marriage. There is no option which guarantees she won't have to marry her betrothed other than death. When T'Pau speaks of T'Pring she refers to her as being 'property' and Stonn, before being interrupted, states he's made 'the ancient claim' - we don't know what this is because he gets cut off but it's obvious they're both using the language of Vulcan law. Men are permitted true freedom to choose. If a woman wants to choose someone else to be with there is no option available to her other than the kal-if-fee which might result in the death of the one she wants to be with. And, if her lover fails, her husband can still just decide he wants to marry her and she'll be forced to. T'Pring gives two scenarios: One where Spock 'frees' her and one where he doesn't - it's still ultimately his decision which is clear when he ends the conversation with "Stonn, she is yours." This again isn't just because of the pon farr as T'Pol also goes through this. Koss can choose another mate and when the option is talked about there's no implication that this would result in any sort of fight (both by the casualness of its mention and by the fact that there's no formal word for it unlike the kal-if-fee.) Also, the fact that Koss does eventually grant T'Pol a divorce and it's all fine means that T'Pol isn't lawfully required to have another man waiting if her HUSBAND doesn't want her. It's ONLY required if SHE doesn't want her husband. Tradition must take precedence over individual desire UNLESS!!! You're a man. Then it's fine. Like, your parents might not be happy but legally you're golden.
#as a note do NOT read the comments on any T'Pol marriage clips on youtube they're full of 'haha women amiright' jokes about#how she's leading Trip on and being a bitch for not choosing him etc - if you become interested in female characters you learn#quickly just how much people still hate women displaying any amount of complexity/doing anything that isn't just falling into a man's arms#even if that hatred doesn't take the form of outright vitriol (aka: 'I feel so sad for Trip bc T'Pol's marrying some other guy')#Trip: T'Pol listen this arranged marriage stuff is no good - you've gotta be free! You have to do what YOU want to do!#T'Pol: -legally seen as property of her husband in the eyes of the law- ...............#<- not dunking on Trip it's just funny how easy it makes it seem - but!! He doesn't know all the facts#as evidenced by him saying T'Pol might 'call off the wedding' to her mother - T'Pol can't legally call off shit#It's also interesting how gender isn't really mentioned in any of the clips I've seen - it's very clear to me that T'Pol has no options#specifically because she's a WOMAN within her culture but that's almost like a quiet undercurrent and not focused on as a main#point of dissatisfaction - which I imagine it 1000% would be for Vulcan women when men have infinitely more freedom#Vulcan Man: I don't wanna marry this lady#Vulcan Law: Ok#Vulcan Woman: I don't wanna marry this guy#Vulcan Law: Noted. So - if you and your lover are willing to risk his life there's a chance (if he wins) that you can get out of marrying#him BUT if your husband kills your lover and still wants to marry you you DOOO have to marry him sorry you just gotta#<- this also makes it incredibly dangerous to in any way warn your legal husband that a kal-if-fee might be incoming#the element of surprise is a HUGE advantage when it comes to winning a fight to the death (which your lover can train for)#Vulcans#T'Pol#T'Pring#star trek#I don't think this is bad necessarily (as a fictional worldbuilding thing) but I wish it were explored more#It's especially interesting because it's an aspect of logical Vulcan society - it's clearly not logical but it's also clearly rooted deeply#in tradition which may mean Vulcan long ago used to have a much more extreme gender bias towards the male population#it just implies a lot that Vulcan has these old laws which are unfair towards women yet they still follow BUT women are treated as equal#citizens OUTSIDE of marriage! Maybe there was a feminist movement before? Is there another brewing? Where are the Vulcan feminists!

There's something so poetic about how El is the centre of all the chaos, wanted by the government and military and Mike is her strong calm that doesn't hesitate to get sucked into her storm and stand by her side in the face of any conflict. Like guys. This little boy did not hesitate to protect her and stand off in the face of the government to defend her, going against all the typical patriotic rule-following norms of an American Suburbanite Middle class nuclear family. He comes from pure safe normalcy but doesn't hesitate to run in the other direction heading towards chaos and danger if it means she's there... because he feels safest with her and is driven by the instinct to protect her. 😭🩷 There's something so beautiful and inspiring about someone as hurt and troubled and chaotic as El being loved in such a simple, unconditional way. Mike doesn't see her for the chaos she represents which surrounds her, he sees her for the innocent goodness that she actually is— her calm, gentle demeanour and the warmth it makes him feel. He understands that all the danger that comes with being with her is through no fault of her own, and actively works to help combat all the forces against her. He knows that despite being the centre of the chaos she's not the cause of it, she's the remedy for the effect of it and that is an undeserved, exhausting punishment yet a burden she bears regardless without complaint— a sign of her innate goodness which Mike recognises and loves her for all the more. Even moreso, he works to share that burden with her and criticise it because he sees how innocent and undeserving she is of the responsibility infringed upon her. His willingness to take all of this on is so wholesome and exactly the kind of sweet effort-full love that a character like El deserves, which is so gratifying for the audience to see.
#mileven#something intense about how the one girl he wants#the only one he has and will ever loved#is also the only one that is supposed to be off limits and unconventional for him#they come from two completely different backgrounds#him a middle class nuclear American family#her born and bred as a weapon to use in the Cold War#forever wanted by the government for her uses as a spy and such rather than a normal girl who wants a future with love and a family#yet despite all of these expectations mike doesnt gaf and only sees her as the love of his life#and he'll never stop fighting for their chance to live happily together as a normal couple even if shes treated otherwise 🩷#When he tells the gov he'd never tell them where she is#when he surrenders himself to them as long as it holds them off from getting to her a little longer#when he throws himself into direct danger in s2 in the tunnels#when he proves once again his ability to make logical rational plans in s3 that protect everyone and lessen the burden on el#s4 - he immediately devotes himself to getting her back from the clutches of the government#theyre so excellent man. Mike Wheeler is the perfect boyfriend#he doesnt care about the fact that he shouldn't love her#all he cares about is that he does love her#The lab kept trying to stamp out her individuality and stamp her objectification on her wrist so that everyone else could see her#as the weapon she was raised to be#but Mike immediately ignored that and gave her a real name#from the beginning he only ever saw her as the courageous brilliant hopeful pretty girl that he loved#even when everyone else knew her as eleven the lab girl with mind powers first#mike always saw her as el the unique girl locked deep within her who he wanted to get to know and love#this wasnt supposed to be the lengthy monster that it is but what can i say. im insane about these two#Who's up in the big 2025 appreciating Mileven as the fictional paragon of true love 🗣️🗣️🗣️#the romeo and julietism of mileven#but better#when she keeps up the strong front until shes with him then she can collapse in his arms and be needy and vulnerable#e.g. s3 billy fight scene... s4 desert reunion

muderbot fans saying they’re losing faith in humanity because people are voting it… we’re not saying it has to fuck!!!! just that it’s sexy!! are YOU saying that people finding someone sexy invalidates or infringes upon that person’s aroace identity?? because that doesn’t seem right to me personally
#if it were a real life person i sure wouldn’t call it sexy to its face bc that would make it uncomfortable so ofc that’s#a shitty thing to do#but i’d still be allowed to THINK it’s sexy#i just shouldn’t make that its problem#which in this case is luckily impossible for me to do bc it’s a fictional character#if it were a real person it would be weird for me to vote on it in a sexy rankings poll#but that would be weird to do to ANYONE who didn't volunteer to participate in such a poll#i understand Not voting for it bc it would hate to win#that’s fun and silly#but judging other people for not doing the same is unnecessary#those people are just following a different kind of logic than you when making their decisions#so there’s no need to make yourself sad by assuming they’re using your type of logic for evil#ace discourse#aro discourse#silver.chat

possibly one of my more controversial opinions on fantasy novels is that they dont need maps. like sure theyre pretty. they look nice inside the front cover. but if the author has done their job, i won't have to flip back and look at a map to understand what's going on
#possibly a side effect of my mediocre sense of direction lol#but also like. in my head it all follows sitcom set logic. we dont NEED a floorplan thats physically possible#would happily trade every fantasy map for a table of contents#bookposting#this may also be related to the type of fantasy i like#i dont usually enjoy epics. i want a tight focus on a few characters and their personal problems#but also i think even if i was reading epics i wouldnt care about maps#like just tell me you're attacking through the mountain pass or whatever. it's fine. i believe you#idk i think maps can be used to good effect in fiction that gets a little more multimedia with it#but most novels are not doing that#and i think a lot of the time the map doesnt really add anything to the story

Here’s a sort of…. Prompt? Headcanon? Idea?? For Danny Phantom.
Let’s go with the,, semi-fanon idea of cores. We see the Far Frozen with ice powers, with their whole little civilization. They are ALSO the only ghosts we see that have any medical knowledge.
So what if ghosts with ice cores had healing powers? Danny is very durable, but he also (probably) has advanced healing.
Idk, it’d be a fun possibility to explore Danny ‘plays as a tank in irl superheroics 4 times out of 5’ Phantom finding out he can heal people while doing a school-mandated cpr class.
#danny phantom#dp#bonus points if it’s just shy of necromancy but that might be a different turn#did my school do mandated cpr training? no. but we did do mandated self defense training so. I imagine it’s possible#I have made a story or two where Danny had healing powers#but up to you how they work#and technically the way I made them in this one story was an indirect use of two different powers#I can explain if someone is SUPER curious but this particular. prompt? is like#him DIRECTLY having healing powers#he’s just hovering his hands and lil glowy snowflakes start drifting down and healing the person#Tucker is like Oh Hey This Means I’ll Just Go To Danny For Medical Stuff#the b plot is getting Tucker to get his damn shots… cartoon logic says somehow he gets them done at the vet#it just popped into my head you don’t gotta do that lol#Sam meanwhile is like. hm. homeopathy bc she’s not. AGAINST doctors and medical schools per se#but she’s protesting something or another about them#probably concerns about medical mistreatment#meanwhile Danny is like I Did Not Agree To Be The Medic!#he’s played video games okay HE KNOWS HOW THAT GOES DOWN.#…. I also really like battle and field medics in general in fiction so this is me and my blatant attempts for More Of That#feel free to crossover but just by itself it seems fun :3

I've got big opinions on dream sequences in writing. Which is mostly that they really shouldn't be there like 90% of the time because they grind the narrative to a halt, but I think they CAN have value. It's just that they tend to be executed in a way that's kind of pointless.
It's mostly that a lot of writers have the sequences be literal 1:1 depictions of the character's anxieties or feelings, or otherwise the absolute most on the nose symbolism possible. And it's not like dreams are NEVER like that, but why bother stopping the narrative to include a full sequence that essentially just repeats information the reader already knows?
If it's established that Character A is scared that Character B will get murdered by Jeff the Killer, and then A has an entire dream sequence of B getting Jeff the Killed and A wakes up sweating like 'Noooooooooo I do not want that to happen noooooo' it's jsut like. Yeah I knew that already?
#I think (at least with realistic fiction) a solid way to do a dream sequence is to fully take advantage of what a dream really is#(ie the brain processing memories and anxieties) to tell you things about a characters psyche that would not otherwise explicitly#come up in the text#Like my dreams could tell you a lot about things that are important to me/things that motivate me/things that scare me#They're often set in significant places from my lifetime and a lot of the time it sort of has 'themes' that play out in absurd dream-logic#scenarios but have an underlying coherency (ie me either trying and failing to acquire something of value or me attempting#to flee from some sort of existential threat beyond my control)#Using that sort of model to construct a dream sequence while also tailoring it to be relevant to their specific plotline (rather than#just like a general info dump) can provide information about the character without exposition. Tie in their character arc to wider plot#elements. Set up/emphasize motifs/patterns/themes. Etc#(AM IN THE PROCESS OF REVISING A DREAM SEQUENCE FOR THE 10 BILLIONTH TIME AND TRYING TO JUSTIFY TO MYSELF THAT IT HAS A POINT)

the fact that scully continues to be skeptical so deep into the series is not a bug or a mark of poor illogical writing, it is a purposeful and defining feature, because she is a fictional character and that is her role in the narrative.
#the tension between her scientific evidence based logical side and her credulous faithful religious emotional side IS THE POINT#she lays in out for all of us in the by the sea…she’s afraid#also within the narrative itself it’s the role she plays in her relationship with mulder#like that’s also purposeful#it’s what’s comfortable and familiar and makes sense to them#IT’S ABOUT JUXTAPOSITION#it’s about the warring aspects of human nature and drawing them out to extremes in a fictional narrative to explore them THAT’S THE POINT!!#this is apropos of nothing specific i’ve just seen some takes in general that don’t seem to take this into account. it’s fine!#the x files

calling a relationship "inherently toxic" because it was born from an affair is, dare i say it, repackaged puritanical goofiness. some people on this webbed site will act like cheating on your spouse is a grade-A sin equal to murder, and i know y'all parents ain't divorced
#vagueposting... how unlike me#tbc clear i do notttt condone cheating irl 🙄🙄🙄 . conversely i also do not care enough to involve myself in other people's lives#but its especially absurd when ppl use this logic to talk about fiction. its fiction. its fictitious. no one died. where are we#screeds#txt

finally watching arcane for obvious reasons (and also mel is so beautiful) and here's my review of season 1 episode 3:
powder, that was the least effective bombing ever. one (1) good guy left standing. one (1) bad guy dead. okay to be fair two (2) good guys left standing and one (1) bad guy dead and then one of the good guys killed one of the bad guys so now it's one (1) good guy left standing and two (2) bad guys dead. anyway. main boss? alive. his case of evil hulk drug? still standing. truly, uh, well, jinxed.
#me.txt#anyway i;m not tagging this because i know i'm stumbling on to some kind of discourse#anyway is this a purposeful narrative decision by the writers? well i used to watch spn so now i doubt the abilities of all writers#but logically yes#am i still disappointed in her for Fiction's Shittiest Bombing? yeah#is it her fault? well technically yes for doing it and no for the shitty luck

i think if taboo themes shows up repeatadly in someones work, it DOES say what kinda person they are
I think it says that they follow what is interesting and entertaining to them regardless of the opinions of assholes, and I respect that in a guy
.... True
#mailbox#glue speaks#I do need to clarify that the person who this discourse is centered around IS a trashbag#the problem is that they're a trashbag for things they do in real life#to real people#while “profic” people use that as an excuse to dunk on them using fancop talking points#and you literally cannot do that and still be profic#because if you use this line of reasoning against them then guess what#you're basically saying anyone who's written more than like two noncon fics thinks it's hot in real life#that might not have been your intent but that is where that line of logic tracks#so you literally cannot use fictional content about fictional characters that are not based on real people in any way#as a metric for how good or bad a person is

i absolutely do not vibe at all with any red hood steph concept ive ever seen because fucking nobody engages with it in any depth its just 🤔🤔 steph is basically the same as jason right? people who dont like jason online say so so it must be true~
like i need you first of all to walk back several steps and understand two major things about utrh and stephanie brown here. the first is that steph got into crime fighting in the first place bc she wanted to ~spoil~ the crimes of her c-list supervillain father. the second is that the core of the tragedy of the red hood is that batman is supposed to be his fucking dad.
so if you do want to do a red hood stephie concept here which. to be clear is not something i am INHERENTLY opposed to. you have a couple options to make it potentially coherent but you need to actually be deliberate and clear about what youre trying to do with that concept. you need to step away from jasons tragedy and look at hers and figure out where exactly her anger and hurt are coming from and who exactly theyre directed at, as well as what specifically in your au concept it would be so different than the canon one where when she comes back she wants to do pretty much the opposite of what jason wanted when *he* came back.
and. crucially. if the difference is the relationship she has to bruce being different you actually do need to show not tell that dude. im sorry but if you just *tell* me that in your universe that steph has a more deep and meaningful relationship to bruce i 100% always am like "ill believe it when i fucking see it". like, she has parents of her own and while that doesnt preclude having a more signficant relationship with bruce (see: timmy)... you really do have to do the legwork or it looks like youre just writing them out and asking us to take your word for it that Of Course steph wants bruce to adopt her, hes batman! gag, retch, spew. do notdo this.
FRANKLY in a reverse robins concept i vibe way more with steph as red robin than anything specifically her getting the dumpster costume from whoever you do put in the red hood role. (frankly x2 i still think if they really truly had to do the storyline they did in canon where shes still trying to do bruces dirty work for him and hires assassins to kill tim to ~make him better~ lmao she should have been the one who wore the Bad Robin uniform before tim got it instead of fuckin ulysses i just think it would have been more coherent and also funner for me personally)
anyway if you link me a red hood steph concept here and it sucks or does any of the things i Just finished critiquing i will be very irritated and i will not be polite to you about it. just as a fair warning.
#still kind of mad about this one time the topic came up and someone linked me a rh steph bc 'shes so sexy in it'#i was like bestie does the term gay man mean anything to you. and they were like#'oh sorry im asexual so i forgot that when some people say sexy it means they want to Fuck them'#...#like can you walk me through any of your logic here. why sexy was the adjective you used in the first place instead of like#'interesting'. 'compelling.' 'charismatic' even#why are you acting like im the weird one for assuming you meant attractive or swoonworthy being the main draw of the character.#why am i supposdly the one who made it about whether or not *either of us* wants to fuckthe fictional character. i wasnt even thinking that#i truly madly deeply did not assume anything more than that you meant attractive when you said attractive#lmfao.#this wasnt even the only time that shit has happened to me. please do not do this.#i would love to say with confidence 'you wouldnt say shit like that to a lesbian about sexy men' but frankly i do have a sinking feeling+#that they would#whatever. none of that was the fucking point#the point is jasons evil era doesnt work if u just copypaste it on steph shes a totally different character the context is totally differen#text#dc#steph text

Alien invasion sci-fi with zero subversion of the genre is so boring
#sci-fi is one of my favourite genres of anything really#it’s an amazing medium to reflect on the present and its problems#so by that logic it’s a good thermometer to gauge what people in different cultures or different times considered a source of great anxiety#and then you create a work of science fiction centering around an alien invasion/domination/infiltration in the 21st century?????#with zero commentary on the underlying themes of that trope????#there are so many interesting angles here and you used zero of them#ok‚ then.
