In 1942, when Japanese torpedoes struck the USS Lexington, then the second-largest aircraft carrier in the navy’s arsenal, the crew abandoned ship—but not before breaking into the freezer and raiding all the ice cream. Survivors describe scooping it into their helmets before lowering themselves into shark-infested waters.
US bomber crews used to make ice cream while flying over enemy territory after figuring out that they could strap buckets of ice cream mix to the outside of their planes during missions; by the time they landed, the mix would have frozen in the cold temperature of high altitude and been churned smooth by engine vibrations and turbulence, if not machine-gun fire and midair explosions. And soldiers on the ground took to using their helmets as mixing bowls to improvise ice cream from snow and melted chocolate bars.
Ice cream became so tied to national morale, in fact, that when the most decorated member of the Marine Corps, General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, called it a “sissy food” in the 1950s and tried to convince his marines that they’d be tougher on a diet of beer and whiskey, he drew so much national backlash that the Pentagon had to intervene with an official statement promising ice cream would be served no less than three times a week.

Justice Department indicts Iranian, Pakistani nationals linked to Navy SEAL deaths in Arabian Sea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Justice Department announced an indictment Thursday against two Iranian brothers and a Pakistani national linked to a U.S. military operation off the coast of Somalia in January that resulted in the deaths of two Navy SEALs. Shahab and Yunus Mir’kazei — who federal prosecutors say work for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – and Muhammad Pahlawan are each charged with conspiring to provide and providing material support to Iran’s weapons of mass destruction program resulting in death and conspiring to commit violence against maritime navigation and maritime transport involving weapons of mass destruction resulting in death. Pahlawan is currently in custody and awaiting trial while the Iranians are at large. If convicted on the federal charges, all three men face a maximum penalty of life in prison. The Justice Department says Pahlawan “allegedly worked for the Mir’kazei brothers as the captain of a smuggling vessel known as a dhow, named the ‘Yunus,’ which is owned by Shahab.” US NAVY SEAL FELL INTO ARABIAN SEA AND ANOTHER DIED TRYING TO SAVE HIM, OFFICIALS CONFIRM “On the night of Jan. 11, U.S. Central Command Navy forces operating from the USS LEWIS B. PULLER, including Navy SEALs and members of the U.S. Coast Guard, boarded the dhow off the coast of Somalia,” it continued. “Two Navy SEALs lost their lives during the interdiction.” “As alleged, the U.S. boarding team encountered 14 individual mariners on the vessel, including Pahlawan. During a search of the dhow, the U.S. boarding team allegedly located and seized what is believed to be Iranian-made advanced conventional weaponry,” the Justice Department added. “Preliminary analysis of the advanced conventional weaponry indicates that it includes critical components for medium range ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles, including to include a warhead and propulsion and guidance components.  “The type of weaponry found aboard the dhow is allegedly consistent with the weaponry used by the Houthi rebel forces in recent attacks on merchant ships and U.S. military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” the Justice Department also said. Federal prosecutors say Pahlawan is facing additional charges of “providing materially false information to U.S. Coast Guard officers during the boarding of the dhow regarding the vessel’s captain and witness intimidation for threatening one of the crewmembers on the dhow.   4 CHARGED AFTER SEIZURE OF SUSPECTED IRANIAN-MADE WEAPONS IN VESSEL THAT LEAD TO DEATHS OF 2 NAVY SEALS They added that Pahlawan “allegedly worked with Shahab to prepare the dhow for multiple smuggling voyages, and Shahab paid Pahlawan in Iranian Rials from a bank account in Shahab’s name.  “Pahlawan allegedly arranged to receive payments from Shahab and Yunus in Iran and distribute the money to his family and others,” according to the Justice Department. The Navy in January identified the two SEALs who were declared dead as Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J. Chambers and Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram, days after they went missing. “We extend our condolences to Chris and Gage’s families, friends, and teammates during this incredibly challenging time. They were exceptional warriors, cherished teammates, and dear friends to many within the Naval Special Warfare community,” Capt. Blake L. Chaney, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group 1 said at the time. The announcement of the indictment comes as U.S. Central Command released images Thursday of Air Force F-22 Raptors arriving in the Middle East” as part of U.S. force posture changes in the region and to address threats posed by Iran and Iranian-backed groups.” Fox News’ Louis Casiano contributed to this report.

Search for Missing Navy SEALs in Gulf of Aden
Tumblr media
Ships and Aircraft Deployed in Search Mission for Missing Navy SEALs
U.S. Navy ships and aircraft are actively searching areas of the Gulf of Aden for two **missing** U.S. Navy SEALs. The search operation follows their mission to board and seize a vessel carrying components for medium-range Iranian ballistic missiles destined for Somalia.
Details of the Mission
A U.S. defense official revealed that the SEALs were on the USS Lewis B. Puller, a Navy expeditionary sea base vessel. They utilized small special operations combat craft to approach the vessel transporting the missile parts. The operation aimed to prevent the transfer of warheads and engines off the coast of Somalia. Identification of the Suspicious Vessel The vessel, identified as a dhow without a country flag, had a history of transporting illegal weapons from Iran to Somalia. Crew members aboard the dhow, totaling about a dozen, were taken into custody during the mission.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Tragically, during the boarding in rough seas around 8 p.m. local time, one SEAL was knocked off by high waves. A teammate went in after him, and currently, both are **missing**. The ongoing search involves U.S. Navy ships, helicopters, and drones in the Gulf of Aden.
Interception and Confiscation
Despite facing approximately a dozen crew members, the SEAL team successfully confiscated the weapons, and the vessel was sunk as part of routine procedure. This process typically involves blowing open holes in the hull for safety reasons.
Context and Related Operations
Officials clarified that the SEAL mission is distinct from Operation Prosperity Guardian, the ongoing U.S. and international mission in the Red Sea. It is also unrelated to recent retaliatory strikes conducted by the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen over the past two days. Read the full article

US Navy SEALs missing during seizure of Iranian weapons shipped to Houthis
Two US Navy SEALs missing in the Arabian Gulf were involved in an operation to seize Iranian weapons destined for Yemen.
The SEALs deployed from the USS Lewis B Puller, an expeditionary mobile base ship. They boarded a small dhow off the coast of Somalia at night, supported by helicopters and UAVs, and seized the vessel, US Central Command Navy forces reported.
They took Iranian ballistic and cruise missile components, including propulsion, guidance and warheads for medium-range ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles, as well as air defence components.
The analysis revealed that it was the same type of weapon used by the group to attack ships in the Red Sea. The supply, direct or indirect, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis in Yemen is a violation of UN Security Resolution 2216 and international law.

Updated version of the Chinese Navy's J-11B, perhaps with new EFSA radar, participates in maritime exercises
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/23/2000 - 4:00 PM in Military
At least one updated version of the J-11B fighter of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy - probably equipped with a new EFSA radar - participated in a recent simulated combat exercise with more than 10 jets over the South China Sea.
Organized by a brigade affiliated with the Navy Aviation Force of the PLA Southern Theater Command, the 24-hour flight training featured air battle and offensive and defensive tactical maneuvers, PLA's Southern Theater Command said on its Weibo account on Monday. The exercise had simulated battles of four against two and two against two, the Chinese state media reported.
On Monday, the U.S. Navy expeditionary mobile base USS Miguel Keith, a type of large vessel of logistical support and command and control, entered the disputed South China Sea for the first time.

USS Miguel Keith.
With a displacement of more than 90,000 tons, the USS Miguel Keith is the third ship of the Lewis B class expeditionary mobile base. Puller that can perform a number of tasks, including hosting the landing and takeoff of heavy helicopters; providing logistical support, including maintenance, repair, refueling, rearmament and refueling of other warships and helicopters, greatly increasing their resistance when operating away from a ground base; and acting as a command and control center. It can also carry a large number of equipment and supplies.
The USS Miguel Keith played the lead role during the U.S.-Japan Noble Fusion joint exercises in February.
China should pay close attention to the movements of the USS Miguel Keith and figure out ways to deal with it, because its presence in the South China Sea can significantly increase the operational capabilities of the U.S. military in the region, a Chinese military expert told the Global Times on Tuesday, requesting anonymity.
Tumblr media
Both the video released by the PLA Southern Theater Command and the CCTV report gave a glimpse of a J-11B fighter returning from the exercise and entering its hangar. This particular J-11B had a grayish white radar dome instead of the black radar domes that other J-11Bs have, analysts noted.
Tumblr media
Similar changes have been observed in the PLA Air Force since 2019, when the Air Force J-11Bs with black radar domes began to switch to white ones, according to eastday.com, a Shanghai-based news site. It has been widely speculated that the color change in the radar dome indicates that the J-11B has received an update on its radar, possibly switching from the old Doppler pulse radar to the new active electronic scanning radar (EFSA).
Tumblr media
This, along with other possible changes, will allow the updated J-11B to enjoy a longer detection range, identify more targets and allow the use of more advanced weapons, such as the PL-10 short-range combat missile and the PL-15 visual-range air-to-air missile, Chinese analysts told the Global Times.
The J-11Bs of the PLA Navy are also receiving WS-10 engines developed in-house in China.
With the improvements, the fourth generation J-11B jet will reach a fourth generation plus level and remain in active service with high competitiveness for a long time, analysts said.
